Report of the Committee on Legislation. The new legislation for the protection of seamen set forth in la~t year's report continues to bear fruit whic11 amply justifies the expense and labor bestowed by this society ill their behnlf. Its benefits will continue to be felt more and more as time goes on, not only by ollr illcreasing merchant marine, hut also by all seaman, whatever tbeir nationality and under whatevel flag they sail, who frequent American ports. We cannot show statistics of liv~s saved, but we are satisfied that fewer lives will. be sacrificed and fewer familie~ impoverished IInder the Ilew method~, regulations ~Ulcllife-saving applia.nces now required by law. It is a. matter of special rejoicing that the legislative drift is more than ever in favor of increasing care and watchfulness over the men of the sea who are now recognized as an asset of increasing value to our country's com merce and g-rowing seacoast. Annual Report of the Seamen's Benefit Society.

SEORETARY'S REPORT FOR 1909.

The Seamen's Benefit Society has been at work on the same lines as in_ fOfmel' years. Three regular business meetings were beld at the house of 1\I1's. W. B. Shoema.ker, No. 16 W~st 55th Street. The Sunday evening teas for apprentice boys have been continued, with great success. Thc3C apprentice boys are the future officers of the British merchant marine. The coffee bar bas been kept up; this is a particularly useful branch of the service, and one whi<:h deals a blow to the saloons which infest and dis grace out' city. Maga.zines and helmets and mufllers have been sent to the Institute. The Society had a sale on December 11th, at No. 11 East 86th Street,. which netted 8187. The Seamen's Benefit Society sewing class met on five Tuesday after noons in L~nt, to work for a sale to be held at Christmas time. ,"Ve have made provision for the Sunday evening teas, as well as the usua.l Saturday and Thursday evening socials. These evellings at the Insti. tute are alway,s well patronized by the sailors, who; fully appreciate what. their friends are doing for them.
