GAME #1 AKRON VS TEMPLE (SEPT. 11, 2021) GoZips.com/ZipsFB | #OurWay 5 THIS IS AKRON FOOTBALL • WR George Qualls, Jr. and WR Tony Grimes, Jr. recorded career-high marks in receiving at Ohio (Nov. 10) with 64 (3 catches) and 60 (5 catches) yards. ZIPS UNVEIL TALENTED 17-MEMBER 2021 SIGNING CLASS IN EARLY SIGNING PERIOD The University of Akron football program, under the leadership of third-year head coach Tom Arth, announced a talented 14-member class for the early signing period for 2021. Recruiting talented student-athletes, who are leaders and team captains from championship-caliber programs has been a hallmark of signing classes for Coach Arth and his staff. These principles are strongly reflected in the ‘21 class.

The Zips’ decorated signing class features nine state champions, 13 district champions, and 16 team captains from perennial power programs at both the state and national levels. This distinct group also features 14 all-state honorees and 17 all-district honorees. In total, the Akron signing class is comprised of nine “3-Star” and seven “2-Star” prospects.

The University of Akron football program has also placed a premium on having a strong local and regional footprint. Of the 14 early signees, over half hail from high schools within three hours of the Akron campus. Coach Arth anticipates rounding out the remaining members of the class of ‘21 with additional strong local and regional talent.

Donning the Blue and Gold Akron uniform this season will be Bennett Adler (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius), Luke Bauer (Uniontown, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban), Jasaiah Gathings (Statesville, N.C./Statesville), DJ Irons, Ryan Jankowski (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach), Darrian Lewis (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary), Colin Lyons (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport), Matthew Monaghan (London, England/Wetherby Senior School), Konata Mumpfield, Andre Proffitt (Trenton, Ohio/Lakota West), Noel Roach (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills), Oran Singleton, Jr., Rey’noi Summersett (Charlotte, N.C./North Mecklenburg) and Myles Walker (Ellwood City, Pa./Central Valley). ZIPS ADD SEVEN PLAYERS IN FEBRUARY TO 2021 SIGNING CLASS The Zips later added during the February signing period seven players, including; Jeslord Boateng, Dakari Bradford (Clairton, Pa./West Beaver). Josh Bryant (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown), Asian Burt (Canton, Ohio/St. Thomas Aquinas), John Malchesky (Concord, Ohio/Lake Catholic), Dontae Pollard (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) and Anthony Williams, Jr. ZIPS IN THE COMMUNITY

#FINDAWAY Winner of the 2020 Zippy Cup for the most community service hours of any Akron team, the Zips’ football team completed 554 community service hours prior to quarantine and were on track to fulfill 1,100 hours for the spring 2020 semester. While participation included 100 percent of the team members, the Zips completed a total of 1,300 community service hours for the academic year. This past year, the team volunteered at the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank, Open M Community Center, Second and Seven Reading Program, Mason Park Community Center athletic programs, Haven of Rest and FCA All-Abilities Camp and is scheduled to volunteer at the International Soap Box Derby and HALO Foundation Gala Fundraiser. ZIPS IN THE CLASSROOM Akron under head football coach Tom Arth continued to excel in the classroom over the 2020-21 academic year as the Zips registered 3.148 GPA, including a program-record 3.212 GPA during the spring 2021 semester. 6 GAME #2 AKRON VS TEMPLE (SEPT. 11, 2021) GoZips.com/ZipsFB | #OurWay THIS IS AKRON FOOTBALL DID YOU KNOW • Akron football is one of a very few programs in the country that practices in the mornings to accommodate the upperclassmen’s afternoon class schedule. • Zippy is just one of eight female-gendered college mascots in Division I athletics. Do you know the other seven? (YoUDee, the Delaware Blue Hen; Mrs. Wuf of N.C. State; Lucy Lobo of New Mexico; Sue E. Pig of Arkansas; Miss Pawla of South Alabama, Kate the Lion of Hofstra; and Wilma Wildcat of Arizona). • Akron was the first school to jump from Division I-AA football (now called FCS) to I-A (now called FBS). The Zips made the move in 1987. • Hall of Fame coach coached football from 1893-94 for Buchtel College (Akron’s original name). The native went on to take Georgia Tech to the national championship in 1917. The Heisman Trophy, given to the nation’s most outstanding college player, is named in his honor. • On Sept. 12, 2015, an 8-ft., 750-lb. bronze statue of Heisman was unveiled at InfoCision Stadium (outside Gate 1). • Only one player in school history has had his number retired– #89 Chris Angeloff. The junior tight end collapsed and died of cardiac arrest during UA’s 20-8 victory over Marshall on Sept. 6, 1975. The Chris Angeloff Scholarship was created in his honor. • Three players, two coaches, and two teams are members of Akron’s Ring of Honor: Coach , Chris Angeloff, 1968 team, and the 1976 #FINDAWAY team (all inducted in 2003); Jason Taylor (2004); Gordon Larson (2005); and Charlie Frye (2015).
