1 Accommodating Avant-Gardism? Amateur Animation and the Struggle for Technique [published in translation as: ‘Eine Annäherung an den Avantgardismus? Amateur- animation und das Ringen mit der Technik’, in: Siegfried Mattl, Carina Lesky, Vrääth Öhner, Ingo Zechner (eds), Abenteuer Alltag. Zur Archäologie des Amateurfilms, Vienna, FilmmuseumSynema Publications: Vienna, 2015, pp. 28-42. ISBN: 978-3-901644-63-4. Although sometimes regarded as an exceptional pursuit within a cine culture exhibiting such strong roots in still photography and amateur dramatics, animation has represented a persistent strand of non-professional filmmaking in Britain, since the emergence of “small-gauge” technologies, and the consolidation of an organised amateur movement in the 1920s. The distinctive nature of such interest was recognised early by movement insiders, and soon marked by the creation of dedicated “classes” within developing competition spheres,1 in the provision of customised technical devices and services by commercial suppliers,2 and by the emergence of reflection and critique within related hobby literatures.3 By the early 1930s, animation had 1 Notes announcing the first “Amateur National Convention” of small-gauge filmmaking organisations, identify a specific class for “A cartoon film lasting not more than 5 minutes,” adding suggestively that “cut-outs may be used, provided the cartoon effect is achieved.” See Anon., “The National Convention,” Amateur Films 1 (1929) 10, p. 222. 2 Several companies emerged in the post-war decades to supply animation equipment and materials for the amateur market, such as Filmcraft, established by well-known enthusiast, David Jefferson. Specialist devices and services for the would-be animator abound: see, for example, Alan Cleave, “Cartoon Animation For Everyone,” [part one] Movie Maker 5 (1971) 11, p.

  • Steamboat Willie
Steamboat Willie By Dave Smith, Chief Archivist Emeritus, The Walt Disney Company Walt Disney, who would become the best-known producer in animation history, had very humble beginnings. Starting his fledgling company in Hollywood in 1923, he began by making two uninspired animated series, the “Alice Come- dies,” and “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.” But it was with his third series, featuring an enduring character, Mickey Mouse, that Walt rose to fame. That series began with the release of "Steamboat Willie" at the Colony Theater in New York on November 18, 1928. Early in 1928, Walt Disney was disheartened. He had gone to New York to negotiate with his distributor, only to discover that the distributor had taken over the rights to his Oswald cartoons. Walt began thinking of a possible successor to Oswald while riding on the train on his way back to California. There have been many stories of the inception of Mickey Mouse, but on that train ride, Walt may have been recalling a playful little mouse that had made itself at home in Walt’s Kansas City Studio, where he had first started to experiment with animation. On re- turning to California, Walt met with several of his staff members, and they came up with Mickey Mouse. Ub Iwerks, Walt’s chief animator, was tasked with actually designing the character, with input from Walt. Two Mickey Mouse cartoons were made starting that This illustration, titled “Mickey Mouse inbetweener drawing no. 469 spring, “Plane Crazy” and “The Gallopin’ Gaucho.” Walt or 479 from Steamboat Willie” appears courtesy Library of Congress tried desperately to sell a distributor on a series based on Prints & Photographs Online Catalog.

  • 1 Slapstick After Fordism: WALL-E, Automatism and Pixar's Fun Factory Animation
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by St Andrews Research Repository Slapstick After Fordism: WALL-E, Automatism and Pixar’s Fun Factory animation: an interdisciplinary journal 11:1 (March 2016) Paul Flaig, University of Aberdeen In his recent The World Beyond Your Head, Matthew Crawford (2015) argues for a reclaiming of the real against the solipsism of contemporary, technologically cocooned life. Opposing digitally induced distraction, he insists on confronting the contingencies of an obstinately material, non- human world, one that rudely insists beyond our representational schema and cognitive certainties. In this Crawford joins an increasingly vocal chorus of critics questioning the ongoing transformation of human subjectivity via digital mediation and online connectivity (see Turkle 2012 and Carr 2011). Yet to mount this critique Crawford turns to a surprising example: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, the Disney Channel’s first entirely computer animated television series, running from 2006 to the present. Given the proclaimed philosophical stakes of his book, which draws on Heidegger’s concept of “Being-in-the-World” and critiques Kantian Aufklärung, what peeks Crawford’s interest in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, aimed at teaching pre-schoolers rudimentary concepts, facts and vocabulary? Specifically, it is the contrast between Clubhouse and Mickey’s first adventures in Disney shorts of the twenties and thirties. In the latter, “the most prominent source of hilarity is the capacity of material stuff to generate frustration,” thus offering to its viewers “a rich phenomenology of what it is like to be an embodied agent in a world of artifacts and inexorable physical laws” (70).

Published by the Nordic Association for American Studies (NAAS). Mickey’s Trailer and Environmental Thought: Disney Cartoons and Countryside Joe Goddard University of Copenhagen Abstract: The influence of popular cartoons on environmental cognition is explored in this essay through readings of Mickey’s Trailer, a 1938 cartoon directed by Ben Sharpsteen for Walt Disney. Other materials considered include Ford Motor Compa- ny’s 1937-38 film coproduced by Wilder Pictures, Glacier International Park, which promotes motor-tourism and automobile ownership, and Ben Sharpsteen’s other work for Walt Disney. The article also examines the ideas of physical and “illusional” zoning in the city, especially the way that they were applied in the mid-twentieth century. Physical zon- ing involved separating incompatible land uses, whereas illusional zoning entailed seeing what you wanted to see. What does Mickey’s Trailer say about how people can live, and can it inform where people choose to live? The essay muses that apprecia- tions of nature and the environment are influenced by popular culture. Keywords: Walt Disney, Mickey’s Trailer, Cartoons, Popular Culture, Environmental Ideas “Oh boy, Whatta day,” exclaims Mickey Mouse from the front step of his small house as Disney’s 1938 short cartoon Mickey’s Trailer opens.1 Mickey is wearing a nightshirt and a nightcap, and rubs his hands in ex- pectation.

He is a mischievous mouse who gets into trouble easily. He is also very imaginative and quick enough to solve the problems. He typically wears red shorts, white gloves and large yellow shoes, and has only four fingers on each hand. Mickey was initially barefooted and bare handed. His gloves were introduced in the cartoon 'The Opry House', in 1929. He went on to wear them in most of his subsequent appearances until today. Mickey’s Creation Mickey Mouse was created by animators Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks at the Walt Disney Studios, in 1928, as a replacement for 'Oswald, the Lucky Rabbit', an earlier character created by Walt Disney. He came up with the idea of Mickey Mouse while on a train from New York to Hollywood. Mickey Mouse Pick of the Month Mickey’s Journey Mickey first featured in a silent short titled 'Plane Crazy'. He later made his appearance in the short film titled 'Steamboat Willie', which was one of the first cartoons with sound. It was released on 18 November, 1928. Although Mickey laughed and squealed in his initial films, his first spoken words were ‘Hot Dogs!’ in the film ‘The Karnival Kid’, in 1929.
