Agenda: (And Inside This Program) You Are Welcome to Participate in the Q&A's Which Will Take Place During Most Sessions www.OTTexec.com November 17-19, 2020 Gold Sponsors Silver Sponsors www.ottexec.com • #OTTexec Page 1 Welcome to the 2020 OTT Executive Summit 020 has been a difficult year for many companies and Trender Research has 2not been spared. We were forced to cut back on employees and contractor hours and had two events canceled this year-- “Social Video & Livestreaming” in Los Angeles and “OTT Fest” in Atlanta. Like many businesses, schools, and families, we adjusted by moving our operations to a virtual model. To save costs, we paused production on our marquee “OTT Executive Magazine” and began plans to move from expensive print distribution to an all-digital (and more eco- friendly) magazine/community that will allow interaction, commenting, vlogs, and guest authors (more on that later). But like many companies, we didn’t retreat and instead took the time to strategize how to become stronger, more global, and to better serve our community. While many of us have had to struggle and all of us have had to adjust, OTT has had a year of tremendous growth. For sure, the media and entertainment industry as a whole has taken its hits, especially in regards to content production. But streaming video has soared, and many new OTT services have been launched or announced this year. That’s why we are so pleased to have been able to transform OTT Executive Summit into a virtual conference this year. I’m not going to lie, I do miss the collegial setting at the Marriott Marquis and the networking around breakfast, lunch, and our famous cocktail reception with THE best view of Times Square. But we’ve replaced that smaller gathering with an expanded three- day format that is both virtual and global. Now with over 1,250 attendees, 130 top- notch speakers, 38 sessions, 17 fireside chats, six keynote conversations, three Trender Panel focus groups, and two virtual cocktail receptions, I’m feeling pretty good about the change. Thank you all for joining us this year. 2021 can only get better, right? Here’s wishing you all the best for the remainder of 2020 and into the new year. Best regards, Brian Mahony Brian Mahony CEO, Trender Research; OTT Executive Magazine www.ottexec.com • #OTTexec Page 2 A special Thank You to our expert speakers. • Multicasts, ATSC 3.0 Turn Broadcasting Into a Multichannel Platform
Perspectives from FSF Scholars October 12, 2020 Vol. 15, No. 53 Multicasts, ATSC 3.0 Turn Broadcasting Into a Multichannel Platform by Andrew Long * I. Introduction and Summary Consumers today enjoy a wealth of choices in the multichannel video programming distribution marketplace. This vibrantly competitive environment represents a dramatic departure from decades past, when claims as to the existence of bottlenecks were used to justify intrusive government intervention. One rising, and perhaps unexpected and largely unreported, source of multichannel competition is over-the-air broadcasting. Of course, dramatic changes in the media marketplace have been occurring for many years – and yet, due to its size, procedures, and inherent inertia, the "Communications Regulatory Complex" simply is unable to keep pace, especially in the face of considerable reflexive opposition by those who oppose any deregulatory changes. But with regard to broadcasting, cable, direct broadcast satellite (DBS), telco TV, and other media outlets, continued imposition of legacy regulatory restrictions of various types are in increasing tension with their First Amendment rights. Over the last ten years, the number of U.S. households that utilize an antenna to view their local television stations has increased by over a third, from nearly 11.8 million to 16 million. One explanation for that is the improved picture and audio quality that digital television (DTV) The Free State Foundation P.O. Box 60680, Potomac, MD 20859 [email protected] www.freestatefoundation.org delivers. Another is that, as consumers "cut the cord" – that is, discontinue their subscriptions to traditional multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) and transition to streaming options like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and/or Amazon Prime Video – over-the-air television provides a free means to continue to receive the popular content, both national and local, that television stations carry.
