Deceased* Annual Report 2009/2010 1 Executive Director And President’s Report The 2009/10 Swimming WA operations have continued to improve well into the 3rd year of the strategic plan cycle. The SWA Board will continue to build on the Corporate Governance of the organisation, focusing on areas that need to be reviewed and/or improved. The Strategic Plan will come to an end as of July 2010. With review processes in place and with feedback supplied from our members, Swimming WA will build on the past 3 year strategic plan cycle, moving the Association towards a successful future. Our Sub Committees of the Board have continued to give their time and expertise to assist the running of the Association with Open water, Competition Planning, Technical and Finance sub committees all providing valuable input and direction. Swimming WA had a successful events calendar for 2009/10 with the Open Water Series exceeding all expectations. In 2010/11 the Open Water Series will take the next step with the use of timing chips and online entries and results, allowing greater connection to the participants. Sponsorship support was again critical to the delivery of Swimming WA programs and events throughout 2009/10. In particular the support of the Department of Sport and Recreation and Healthway provided financial resources ensuring the delivery of programs, especially at grassroots and regional areas. Other key sponsors throughout 2009/10 that played a key role in our operations include; Vorgee, Water Corporation, Jason Mazda, Hancock Family Medical Foundation, Motive Travel, SportingBet, Aussie Natural Spring Water/Palm Springs and Shell. Swimming WA’s relationship with the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) continued to grow with the appointment of WAIS Swimming Performance Manager Greg Hodge. Greg’s role is primarily building a close relationship between high performance and grassroots. This relationship has grown to the point that Swimming WA will appoint a Performance and Development Coach to work with the grassroots – club and school coaches to build the link to the programs being conducted by WAIS. Membership numbers slightly declined in 2009/10 with a shift in recreational swimmers to competitive swimmers. Further work is being done in conjunction with Swimming Australia to deliver the recruitment and retention strategies to build on membership. A focus for 2010/11 will be on forming better relationships with Learn to Swim operators, schools and pool operators to recruit from their programs to clubs. In addition further support to our regions to build on the participation and pathway opportunities is also critical. A note of thanks should be extended to outgoing Executive Director – David Toll who worked tirelessly over the past three and half years to build the foundations of Swimming in Western Australia. A number of other staff also made the move to other opportunities throughout the 2009/10 year and their hard work and dedication is also commended. Swimming WA has begun the long task of rebuilding our performance at national and international level with Blair Evens and Tommaso D’orsgna making the Commonwealth Games team for 2010. The athlete pathway has been redefined capturing over 300 swimmers for 2010/11 and Coaches pathway has been closely aligned, with Swimming WA working closely with the Coaches Association and WAIS. The foundations established through the last strategic planning cycle will see Swimming WA build a strong program, expand the profile and events to reach the goals set for the next 3 -5 years. Simon Taylor Jeanette Bailey Executive Director President Annual Report 2009/2010 2 Development Report Go Club Forums Swimming WA conducted nine Go Club Forums in the 2009/2010 financial year with a total attendance of 186 people. These forums included a series of talks during the 2009 SunSmart Swimming Championships for parents and club administrators. Go Swim This year Swimming WA distributed over 650 GO Swim packs to new swimming club members under the age of 12 years. Swimmers with a Disability During the 2009/10 season Swimming WA classified a total of 9 swimmers with a disability across the five disability areas: Functional, Intellectual, Hearing Impaired, Vision Impaired and Transplant. Of the 9 swimmers classified, 6 were classified at Swimming WA Classification Days. Swimming WA conducted two Functional Classification Days during the year which involved volunteer medical and technical classifiers assessing the Swimmers and allocating them with a classification. The ultimate purpose of a classification is to provide an opportunity for the vast array of disabilities to compete in a category of similar ability, once a swimmer is classified they are able to compete in Swimming WA and Swimming Australia events. Coach Education/Development Coaches have had many development opportunities over 2009/10 with camps and conferences available for their benefit. Two major coach education opportunities were the: • Annual Coaches Conference – 56 coaches attended • April Indian Ocean All-Stars Coaches Conference – 26 coaches attended Regional Development Swimming WA has been working with all of the regions to develop participation, competitive swimming and to assist in the development of coaches and officials. Clinics were made available to all regions which included opportunities for coaches, officials and athletes. Swimming WA is looking forward to working closely with the regions and the regional Department of Sport and Recreation branches to create effective development plans for the future. Development Squad Activities Development Squad Camp The Development Squad Camp was held on the 26th - 29th of September 2009 with athletes from all three Development Squad attending the camp. A total of 48 Athletes attended the camp. Leigh Nugent, Swimming Australia Youth Development Coach attended the camp as Head Coach. Greg Hodge, WAIS Swimming Performance Manager also attended the camp with additional presenters also coming to the camp. Annual Report 2009/2010 3 Indian Ocean All Stars Tour 2 Coaches and 20 Athletes were selected to attend the Indian Ocean All Stars Tour in Kuala Lumpar on the 18th – 25th January 2010.
