1 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It gives me great pleasure, on behalf of the McKinnon Cricket Club Committee, to present to you the 87th Annual Report. The club continues to enjoy a very strong reputation amongst cricketing circles within Victoria, both for the way it conducts itself and the manner in which it develops fine young cricketers. There are many volunteers across the club who are responsible for this and I would like to thank each of you for your important contribution.

On field we enjoyed considerable success with 9 of our 16 teams making semi-finals, 6 teams making it through to Grand Finals with 4 Premierships won. A great outcome for the club! These Premierships included the First X1 taking out the VTCA 20/20 trophy, their second such premiership in 4 years. The Under 18’s who won in an extremely high quality game against Mackie, great work Peter Marshall and Glenn Taylor for managing the team. The Under 16B combined side with Brighton District, thank you to Stephen Canning for managing the team and really helping them to bond into such a tight knit unit. Our Under 12 Gold under the leadership of Shane Austin won a gripping Grand Final against a much older Highett side.

The Senior section of cricket was overseen by Paul Cox who undertook the role of Chairman of Selectors and Recruiting Manager for the second year. It is a time consuming and at times difficult, job, but Paul carried it out with great persistence and patience. Thanks Paul for assembling and developing our list, it is getting better every year.

Sandun Dias was our Club Captain Coach for the first time. He brings considerable experience and passion to the club. He has brought about significant improvement in our younger players, several of whom are now looking to influence games at senior division level. This is really pleasing, seeing the transition from quality junior player to strong senior player. Regan O’Brien, winner of our Under 21 Award, James Aloni, Jack Massie, Connor Byrne, Joel Ludik, and Jacob Stone all showed something in the First XI. We debuted 6 junior graduates this year, which again is a great acknowledgement of our high quality junior program. Importantly, Sandun also attended every junior training session to provide specialist coaching tips to the players and coaches. The feedback from the coaches was very positive with many young cricketers benefitting from his excellent coaching and taking their games to another level.

Thanks to Brad Kruger for undertaking First XI captaincy duties for the first 2 rounds whilst Sandun was sidelined with a broken finger. Well done to Brad too for his fine season which saw him win the prestigious Peter Watts Medal for the best First XI player. Thank you also to Daniel Streker, Nick Green and Stuart Hamstead for taking on the Captaincy roles for the other senior teams. Your efforts in the way your teams played the game are greatly appreciated by the club.

At senior level we had 2 English lads play for us this year. Ed Young, from Wiltshire Minor Counties team, proved to be an outstanding cricketer who influenced several first XI games this season. He provided a terrific role model both on and off the field for our emerging players. We wish him well in his pursuit of a further County contract back in England. Kyle Helm joined us from Longridge Cricket Club in the north of England. He came out to Australia for a cricketing and working holiday through his Crusaders connection. He proved to be a very handy keeper playing several games in the Firsts, including the T20 premiership. It was great to have Kyle around the club and I am sure that he will get many McKinnon visitors to his home club back in England.

Our junior section was again led by some very capable people. Paul O’Donnell continued to provide guidance to those taking on coaching or team manager roles. The year level coordinators in Angela Granter, Kelli Gray and Lisa Hill did a tremendous job and ensured there was clear communication about fixturing and responsibilities. To our long list of junior coaches, thank you for finding the time to provide 2 leadership to our junior members. Whilst it is tough at times to find the time, it is a genuinely rewarding experience that I am sure you will look back on with great fondness in years to come.

Our junior teams are highly regarded in the strong SECA competition, not only for their skill levels but also for the way in which they play the game. This was clearly evident each time I visited a junior fixture this season. Well done to the parents involved who help shape such positive sporting behaviours. Few clubs, if any in the region, would have as many junior representative players at Regional or State level. This is a true testament to the quality of our junior program. We also had significant assistance from junior parents in Heather Faragher and Simon Zandberg who took on responsibilities of the newsletter and website respectively.

I must thank Shaun Davis for his work in compiling the Annual Report and keeping the log of First XI capped players up to date. He continues to display a strong passion and commitment to McKinnon and I am greatly appreciative of being able to call on him when we need an extra set of hands. The last recognition with regards to volunteers is for Lisa Halasz and Karyn Cox, our joint winners of the Sandy Sanderson Club Person of the year. They took the running of the kitchen with great aplomb and nothing was too much for them. They are hard workers who do so much for our club. Well done!

Our Past Players Group continues to grow and play an important part in connecting the past with our future. The focus of their lunch was a 50 year reunion of 2 premiership flags won in 1964/65. To have so many of those players attend, hear of the game’s highlights and to see their genuine delight when presented with a memento was terrific. Well done Ken Hilton, Russell Dowling and your Committee. Thank you also to Ken Dowling for continuing to provide outstanding service to the club. The work he undertakes to frame up and present the premiership photos so that they can be proudly displayed on our club room walls leaves a lasting legacy that never fails to impress opposition clubs.

Financially we endured a challenging season. Upon being put back into Senior Division, we realised that for our 1st XI squad to be competitive we needed to bring in a quality recruit to ensure our young squad was competitive. This certainly worked, with good wins against several teams who either played finals or were in the race for them. Our squad was able to develop their abilities in competitive matches without being overwhelmed. The club will be stronger for the investment we have made this year and our home grown players will continue to become more central players in the 1st XI performances.

This will be my last President’s report as I am stepping down after 6 years in the role. It has been a privilege to serve such a great club as McKinnon; however it is time for some fresh ideas and views to come forward.

Over the 6 years we have - won multiple premierships across each year level, - won senior premierships including 2 First XI T20 flags, - had record numbers of juniors represent the club at regional and state level, - celebrated our first junior graduate, in Ashton Agar, receive an Australian Test cap, - strengthened McKinnon’s reputation amongst Victorian cricket as a strong, well-managed club with an outstanding record of developing junior talent, - celebrated our first Women’s Premier cricketer in Anna O’Donnell who was also made the inaugural Captain of the Melbourne Cricket Club Women’s First XI.

In closing I would like to thanks Ben Charles, our Club Secretary, who is also stepping down. Ben has put in enormous hours at the club, never flinching when there is a task to be undertaken. When Ben says he will do something you never have to worry that it won’t be done on time or at 100%. Thanks Benny, you are a great servant of our great club.

1st XI / COACH’S REPORT

We walked into the new season riding on a high of an immensely successful 2013/14 campaign in South Division, having won 11 out of 11 in the home and away rounds. This was probably one of the most successful seasons the Club has had in a while, largely due to a great team and the untiring efforts of Captain Adam Pullman and Coach Peter Marshall.

Following the stepping down of Peter Marshall as Coach, the Committee offered me the opportunity to step up as Captain/Coach for the new season. I had to think long and hard about the position as I knew it was going to be quite a big challenge to captain a relatively new side, in a tougher grade, while also coaching the other teams, and trying to concentrate on my personal game. However, I finally decided to take up the challenge, largely due to the confidence I had in the club’s young talent and the potential seen in the season just passed.

The VTCA’s invitation to McKinnon to come up to the Senior Division, although we didn’t win the South Division, presented us a with a lot of questions to consider as a club; are we going to be good enough to compete at that level, would it be a good idea to expose the youngsters to senior division so early, as it could potentially ruin their game, etc. However, we as a club decided we would take up the challenge, which I think was an extremely positive step as it showed the club’s desire to play in the highest possible standard.

It indeed was a great opportunity for the Club, but having said that, it certainly didn’t make my job any easier as it was a huge step up for the team from South Division, a challenge made seemingly greater as it became apparent we would be missing 5 key players from the team from last season.

At this point I was left wondering what had I gotten myself into, and to add to our worries the numbers at pre-season training were far from encouraging, due to most players still being involved in footy. To make matters even worse, a broken and dislocated finger at training had me faced with the prospect of missing the entire season. However, I went against medical recommendations of undergoing surgery as I didn’t want to let anything keep me from doing the job that I undertook for the Club. Eventually, I managed to get back on the field having missed only 3 rounds.

Having overcome these initial obstacles we put our best foot forward, and with the recruitment of Ed Young , and LB stepping up to fill the void of a keeper in the side, we walked onto the field with an optimistic energy. We went into the opening round at Beaumaris with 5 players making their 1st XI debut for McKinnon, and were up against a very strong and experienced side. We did extremely well to bowl them out for 104, with Joel being the pick of the bowlers (2/16), well supported by Malan and the rest. Chasing the target there was a point we didn’t look like getting past 50, as were on the ropes at 7/40. But then 16 year-old Ludik and Jacob Stone, 2 of the 5 players on debut, showed tremendous character and maturity to take the score past 70 and give us a fleeting glance at victory. We eventually ended up being bowled out for 90 which was disappointing, but took away a lot of positives thanks to the youngsters’ performances.

Playing against St Bernards in round 2, we were keen to get a win, but they racked up 298 which looked like a massive total. However, the total didn’t look so bad halfway through the run-chase as we were looking extremely good at 3/198, with Ed young playing a top knock, scoring his first century for the club. But again we paid the price for inexperience as we collapsed from a strong position to being bowled out for 239. Young remained unbeaten having run out of partners. 4 In round 3 against Hoppers Crossing, bowling first we conceded 213 in 40 overs, and again it seemed as if we had no chance of scoring our first win. However Kruger showed his class with a stylish 95, and supported by James Aloni the pair got us close to pulling off a win, but yet another lower order collapse saw us falling short.

By this point people had started doubting our ability as a team, doubting whether we deserved to be in senior division, and these doubts crept into our minds as well, as our losing streak continued against Yarraville.

The next game against Airport West was agonisingly close but yet again we ended up on the losing side, falling short just 7 runs in a chase of 273. It was heartbreaking to come so close and still fall short, but we had no choice but to look at the positives; Regan O’Brien put his hand up to open the and made a brilliant 77, supported well by another classy Ed Young innings of 66.

At this point things were not going well at all, morale was low, and everyone around us had all but written us off, expecting McKinnon to be definitely relegated. This pressure was affecting the team quite badly. Although it seemed impossible to stay up and positive, the guys kept supporting each other and although times were tough, we kept telling ourselves we will bounce back.

Going into the Bentleigh game we had now lost 5 out of 5, and were without Regan who was out with an injury, making the last game before Christmas even tougher. Losing the toss and being put into bat on a crumbling we were struggling at 4 for 50 and seemed to be staring at another defeat. But Adam Pullman played a brilliant patient innings making a 50 which was worth a 100, and again supported by Aloni who has always been the hardest worker in the club, the pair steadied the fall of and helped us set 214 on a challenging track. Brendon Dawes and young Connor also played really well down the order, once again showing a lot of character.

Going into bowl the next week we were quite shocked to see a flat pitch at Bentleigh, but we stuck together as a team and resolved to give it our all regardless. However, at one point it seemed as if we were staring at yet another defeat with Bentleigh cruising at 150 for 5, but our amazing team spirit came through to achieve the impossible. They went from 150 for 5 to 153 all out thanks to a great spell by Andrew Coghill who claimed 3/15 and Malan who grabbed 3/35, supported by some brilliant fielding and a great stumping by Kyle Helm. This was a huge win and a much needed boost for the guys, and it made us start believing in ourselves again. It was going to be a good Christmas.

The New Year and second half of the season, was going to be a massive challenge. To stay out of relegation we had to win at least 3 out of 5 games that included strong sides like table top South Caulfield, Greenvale, Strathmore and Hampton.

The first game against Strathmore didn’t go so well. Personally I took some chances like changing the batting order to suit the match situation, but they backfired as we were bowled out for a 114. And therefore the loss in that game brought about a lot of criticism and pressure, but that’s how the game goes. This loss to Strathmore made our target seem impossible, as we had to win 3 out of the next 4 games, but we had some positives going into the next game with all the guys back from holidays and Jack Massie coming back from injury. We therefore went into the Greenvale game needing a victory at any cost. Bowling them out for 150 was only half the job done as we knew they had a strong and experienced bowling unit. Wickets started tumbling again and it seemed like another collapse, but then at 120 for 5 James Aloni stuck in with me to see us home. We ended up piling up 288 and boosting our confidence.

5 The following week we were up against the very strong top of the ladder South Caulfield who had scored 400 the week before. The boys gave a 100% and put up 266 for 4, a score some thought was nowhere near a par score against the strong South Caulfield boys. But Malan Madusanka bowled a brilliant spell claiming his first 5-for at McKinnon, ending up with figures of 5/77 which helped bowl them out for 222. A great win proving we could beat any team in the competition.

A close defeat against Tullamarine in the following game meant that we had to beat Hampton at Hampton, who at this point were on a roll having won 4 out of 4, and were also the team that beat us in the Semi Final last season. There was a lot of pressure on us, plus we wanted revenge for last year. The day didn’t start all that well, losing the toss and having to bowl on a flat track on a hot day, but guys fought through as we stuck together to bowl them out for 127 with Malan and I grabbing 4 wickets each. Chasing the total, we cruised through with Jack Massie making a classy 66 to put Hampton out of the game, and Ed Young scoring another brilliant 95 to end off a stellar season for him with the bat.

This was a great win for us as a team. The final scores do not tell the full story, they do not reflect the extreme pressure we were under before the game. This win meant a lot for the club’s future, and spoke volumes about the talent, strength and most of all perseverance of the team, and assured everyone of good things to come ahead.

With the vibe being great in the rooms and confidence level right up there, the next day we travelled to Spotswood to face Keilor in the VTCA T20 Grand Final. We were put into bat in a slow track and an outfield that was very damp from the overnight rain, which made runs scoring tough. We managed to get 115 for 2 at the end of the 20 overs, which most, including the experienced commentators thought was a below par score that would be no match for the strong Keilor batting line up. Being out there batting for 20 overs I personally knew it was a good score to defend, especially with the bowling variations we had supported by the enthusiastic fielding unit. We took to the field focusing on keeping things simple and supporting each other to enjoy the final outing for the season. Brad Kruger bowled a terrific spell supported by the rest and once again a good fielding effort helped us bowl out Keilor for 110 and grab the T20 premiership after a close and entertaining game which concluded a challenging but successful season as a Club.

As Coach I feel it’s always a very good sign for the club’s future seeing the 2nds, 3rds and 4ths doing very well. The guys who performed extremely well were youngsters who will take the club forward in coming years. The 2nds just missed finals in a very tough senior seconds comp and the 3rds made finals showing a lot of improvement from the start of the season to the end. The 4ths made the Grand Final which was a great achievement. My thanks goes out to all the captains; Streker, Green, and Hamstead for all the support and hard work put into making this a very productive and successful season.

Being Captain/Coach this great club with nice blokes on and off the field was an enjoyable albeit very challenging experience which had its ups and downs. Always having to deliver the goods regardless of situations was a very stressful job, but the satisfaction of seeing our success as a Club in the end made it all worthwhile. The 2014/15 season was a massive positive as a club competing in the strong VTCA Senior Division being the youngest in age and least experienced. But I’m extremely proud to say the positive attitude and the indomitable thirst for success as a team, mixed with the extreme talent and team spirit we have will no doubt bring us very successful years ahead and enable us to go from strength to strength.

I would like to thank everyone who helped me throughout the season, especially Paul Cox who did a brilliant job as the Chairman of Selectors, always believing in the guys when things were tough. Huge thanks to the President of the Club, Peter Fitchett for showing faith in me and the players, putting a lot of effort and time into the administration and also supporting us throughout the season in training and every single game.

6 Also thank you to Russell Dowling for managing the team and making my job easier. Russ was a big part of the team helping the guys in many ways with his knowledge of the game. A very big thank you to Ken Hilton for running training nights in a very professional manner, which is a very tough job.

Finally thank you to all the players for all their time and effort put in throughout the season to make it a success, well done boys! Looking forward to next season.

Thank you Sandun Dias

2nd XI

The 2014/15 season saw McKinnon's 2nd XI return to cross city cricket in the VTCA's Senior 2nds. While it was nice to play in an all 2nd XI competition again, I can't help but wonder if localising 2nd XI and lower grades of cricket would help keep people in game. Playing 6 out of the first 10 weeks in Melbourne's north and western suburbs was not ideal. However a great mix of experienced and young up and coming talent got the twos off to a flyer with 3 straight wins, including 2 on the road against Hoppers Crossing and St. Bernards. Connor Byrne was the player of the opening part of the season scoring three 40s on the trot, thus earning himself a 1st XI debut.

Despite Andrew “Coggers” Coghill’s best efforts (50 & 6 wickets) we couldn't keep the run going against Yarraville in round 4 and lost our first game for the season. Following this loss, weddings, injury, Con Tiki Tours and the disappearance of players taking their toll on the team, the next win did not come until round 9.

The season would be far from a failure as plenty of players were given opportunities to play senior 2nd XI cricket. Braydn Mancal cemented his spot as an opening batsmen. His in your face and aggressive style got under the skin of many an opponent and was rewarded with the team’s batting award. Hopefully he builds on the progress made and has many big seasons ahead.

Wicket keeping was always going to be a weakness for us but we got lucky when Kyle Helm from the UK landed on our door step to get us started, which was a huge factor early in the year. His performances didn't go unnoticed and he was promoted to the firsts. This opened up an opportunity for Jake Halasz, which he grabbed with both hands. His enthusiasm and willingness to do what he had to for the team made him a favourite amongst the boys and will be a player to watch.

The retirements of Jason “Jay” and Michael “Dogga” Watts from the 2s took a lot of experience out of our attack. Our early part of the season was dominated by Coggers, his clever use of the old ball was hard to get away, saw the opposition batsman panic and was a great lesson in patient cricket. A special mention also to Simpo who bowled beautifully all year without a lot of reward and dug us out of plenty of holes with the bat! It so important that we have these experienced players around the group and we hope we haven't seen the last of them just yet.

Joel Ludik was by far the most talented of our young crop. He has the ability to bat high in the order and under pressure late in the day. Joel can also bowl with the new and old ball, as he strengthens up his mind and body he will no doubt be destined for greater things! The other great find this season was Luke Porter. From the first game I asked him to ball with the new ball into the wind, he did the job wonderfully. Luke bowled 119 overs going at under 2.5 an over along with 17 wickets, when you factor in that he opened the bowling as well, he was probably our most valuable player and at only 18 will be a handful for some time! 7 Michael Jakes, Chad Kadish, Dylan Thomas, Tom Strudwick, Jacob Stone and James Bragagnolo are all younger guys that spent time in the seconds who I would expect to see again, as they can all play. How far they and also McKinnon go as a club will depend on how that talent develops. All this highlighted what a great cricket factory the McKinnon Cricket Club is as we showcased loads of young talent. They all made the grade and kept the side very competitive all year which is a credit to all those who give up their time on the clubs junior program.

The hardest part of any young player’s sporting development will be the transition from juniors to seniors. Most of our guys have more talent than the older opposition we face, they however don't yet know how to apply this to the game situation. I'm confident with patience, opportunity and the correct guidance we can develop a very strong playing list.

The challenge of captaincy wasn't easy but I enjoyed it thoroughly. I learnt a lot about my own game and about myself as a leader. I thank all those who came along for the ride this season. I hope all that played under me this year enjoyed it and improved as cricketers.

Daniel Streker

3rd XI

The McKinnon Third XI this season once again competed in a higher division, playing against some quality second eleven sides, overall had a successful season. The results of the team were a mirror image of the overall clubs success, up and down.

After some convincing wins and competitive losses throughout the season, we again found ourselves playing off in the finals and having to face the top side from the home and away season in the first week. This time around though, the Third XI were knocked out to the eventual runners up in the South A2 grade after putting up a spirited effort that saw us fall just short.

A few special mentions have to go to a some of the more experienced campaigners at McKinnon Cricket Club: Michael ‘Dogga’ Watts who week in and week out, either dug in with the bat to make crucial runs for the team or bend his back with the ball. More times than not finishing the day’s play in the foetal position whilst complaining about the oppositions facilities not having showers; Reigning Player of the Year Award winner, Simon Galloway who single handily kept us in two separate games of cricket in the same weekend by scoring over a hundred runs without being dismissed and claiming key wickets; Tim Walsh and Lachie McKenzie who trouble most batsmen with their short ball; Paul Cox and Shaun Davis whose commentary from either first slip or cover whilst fielding had the team in a barrel of laughs.

Finally, I urge the future of the club to stick fat with the club. Although this season didn’t bring with it the results that we hoped for, the club is heading in the right direction with the development of players.

Throughout the next couple of seasons I can see the likes of Dylan Thomas, Cale Hirschman, Michael Jakes, Chad Kadish, Tom Strudwick and Liam Head all having success within the club in higher grades with bat, ball or gloves.

Nick Green

8 4th XI

Well here is another report from me as skipper of the 4th XI and it is once again oh so close to that elusive premiership for us, but of course more importantly unearthing more fine talent from our junior ranks.

It was a hard start to the season not just for the 4s, but for the club as a whole due to injuries, and unavailabilities. We had an indifferent start to the season with a couple of wins, a couple of losses and a washout or two, which saw us placed precariously in 3rd spot on the ladder at the Christmas break, with only a couple of points between all teams from top to bottom.

A strong finish after the break was important. It didn't go completely to plan but we had done enough to be just hanging in the top four coming into the last game. Playing Cheltenham (who were third on the ladder) meant a big effort was needed to cement our spot in the four and play finals. A good solid team performance saw us post a score of 220 runs, which we defended with great determination to have Cheltenham all out for 205 with 4 overs to spare. It was a great team effort and a finals berth was assured.

We went into the semi final against an old rival in South Caulfield, full of steam and playing good cricket at the right time of year. After winning the toss and electing to bat, a bit of luck went our way early with a few chances given but not taken by our opponents. At the end of our innings we had set a very competitive total of 217, with major contributions from Jacob Duscher 63 and Nick Braddon 41.

The following day it was our turn to bowl and we knew early wickets were the key. Well we did just that with excellent bowling and catching early from the old pro Paul Cox to have them on the back foot. We didn't have it all our way though, with a good partnership building in the middle order, we went to tea knowing there was still a lot of work to do. After the tea break we fought hard to get the breakthrough, and it came with some brilliant fielding to create the run out. From there we kept the pressure up and the wickets tumbled, bowling them out for 154. It was a great team effort again and now we were off to the Grand Final. The bowling highlights of the semi were Johnny Braddon with 3 wickets and Duscher completing a brilliant game in taking 4 scalps.

The GF saw us head down to play Highett at Turner Road. After losing the toss and bowling we fought hard to have them 5/200 at the end of the first day. We came back the next day and ended up bowling them out for 270 runs. Unfortunately we had one of those days with the bat, being bowled out cheaply and found ourselves back out in the field late on Sunday afternoon. Returning the following Saturday we had to get early wickets to have any chance. We toiled hard up until the first drinks break but after only taking the one wicket, the game had slipped further away. We kept trying but it was to no avail with Highett’s lead nearing 400 and they still had 5 in the shed. At this stage as skipper I conceded defeat, with our opposition being the much better side for the majority of the match. In saying that, I would be thinking that at least five of the players that took the field for McKinnon at some stage of the game will be playing at McKinnon in season 2020/21 in our higher grades.

On a personal note I would like to thank all those who played in the 4s this year, it was a great journey. I would also like to make special mentions of some of the junior lads that played this year. Jarryd Cox, who kept wickets all year for us did a fantastic job and kept getting better week to week. So to Nick Braddon, who was unable to play each week due to school cricket, but when he did, always contributed with either a gutsy innings or wickets at crucial times in games, if not both. The future looks bright with these two young men outstanding start to their senior careers at McKinnon. I also know it was with great pride and pleasure that Paul Cox and Johnny Braddon had the opportunity to play with their sons for the season, watch them develop and pass them in the twilight of their careers.

9 Off field I'd like to thank the Prez, Peter Fitchett and his Committee for all the work that happens to make the club tick. Without Peter and his team, we would not be the club we are today so thank you. Thank you to all that help out in the kitchen on match day with the afternoon teas, the best teas going around. (just ask Willo about the donuts). And finally to the Chairman of Selectors and a good friend Paul Cox, you do a great job, not just as chairman but junior coach, delegator, hirer, firer and anything to help the club - well done to you on a great season all round.

See you all next year and we will do it all again and maybe, just maybe, get that elusive flag in the 4ths.

Cheers Suma (Stuart Hamstead)

T20

The VTCA T20 competition again this season had teams split into localised groups of four. We were drawn with Senior Division rivals South Caulfield, as well as Carnegie and Murrumbeena.

A first up win versus Carnegie and a washout with Murrumbeena meant a win against South Caulfield would see us progress to the quarter finals. A confident South Caulfield won the toss and batted. Their openers made a good start in the powerplay, but our slow bowlers held them to 123. A classy 49 from Ed Young got us across the line and set up a quarter final v Middle Park.

The weather prevented the QF from being played and a coin toss would decide the match. Most of the side gave us little hope as Sandun wasn't in great form in this aspect of the game, but his luck turned around and we advanced to the Semi Final v Bonbeach.

We won another toss and went about setting Bonbeach 135 on a dry McKinnon track. Our slow bowling had been a feature all tournament and it did the job again keeping Bonbeach to 6/126, thus putting us into the Final.

A trip across the Westgate to Spotswood versus the North winner Keilor stood in the way of our 2nd VTCA Twenty20 title. The final was live streamed and the presence of cameras and commentators added to the day and highlight the positive impact T20 cricket has had on our game. We won the toss and set Keilor a target of 115. It was a tough wicket and ground to read but we knew a great fielding and bowling effort would be required. Once again we delivered with our slow bowling and fielding holding Keilor to 110, but the day belonged to Sandun and Brad who between them got 84 of our runs and took 5 wickets. It was another fantastic and successful T20 campaign, which hopefully will follow through to success in the longer form of the game next season.

12 Junior Team Reports

Our Junior program this season was again a great success. The inclusion of an Under 18 Team gave us a total of 11 Junior teams and we can add to that, another 50 kids running around in our Milo Programmes.

Fielding five Under 12 teams gives us a good base for the future. Having 2 merged teams in the Under 14 and Under 16 ranks presented some challenges, but this enabled more players a chance to play, which is very important.

The most important aspect was the development of all the young players, but there were many successes along the way. From our 11 teams, 7 played in finals with 5 progressing to the Grand Finals. This ultimately produced 3 premierships. This means that the odds were always in McKinnon’s favour.

Thank you to all the players for playing the game in the right spirit and thank you to the many wonderful volunteers who have assisted in any way throughout the season. We appreciate and need your support and look forward to further involvement next season.

I would like to give special thanks to all the Coaches, Managers and to our 3 age group coordinators: Angela Granter, Kelli Gray and Lisa Hill. I hope you enjoy the Junior Reports.

Paul O’Donnell Junior Coordinator

Under 18

With a wealth of junior cricket talent at McKinnon coming out of the Under 16 program over the past few seasons, and having had a 17’s VTCA team for 3 years, the lads applied pressure to have an Under 18 team entered on Friday nights in the SECA competition. Glenn Taylor and myself were principally responsible, however, we quickly put the onus back on the ‘young men’ to take responsibility.

A number of non-negotiable points were to be applied if we were to participate

· Firstly, have a core group willing to play Friday nights · To play the game in the right spirit, not fool around but play to our best capabilities · To enjoy the game and give equal opportunity to all players

The buy-in from the lads was overwhelming and can I say, from the start to the finish, we ticked all the boxes on most occasions.

Twenty-two different boys represented McKinnon U18s during the course of the season with Tom Strudwick and Luke Porter playing every game; Michael Jakes, Braydn Mancal, Jake Halasz playing albeit one game. Our batting was very consistent with a season high score of 303 against Aspendale off 40 overs. There were 2 centuries by Michael Jakes and Will Taylor - both retired (Jakes 103, Taylor 100).

Batting averages of over 25 were obtained by 6 players, with all 6 scoring in excess of 180 runs. Will Taylor topped the averages at 55.80.

On the bowling side, there were 16 different wicket-takers with Luke Porter winning the competition , taking 21 wickets at 9.24, with a strike rate of 19.57, and economy of 2.83.

13 We were indeed fortunate to have two able wicket-keepers in Cale Hirschman and Jake Halasz who set the standard in the field, with 87 dismissals from catches, stumpings and run outs combined total for whole team.

To be brutally honest we dominated the competition and the boys truly deserved to be Premiers. We had a lot of enjoyment, many laughs, a few raised voices and one or two tears along the way – but the journey was a great experience for all involved.

We lost the T20 semi-final on the last ball of a super over played under lights at McKinnon against Ormond Cricket Club in a bizarre circumstance. I honestly believe we would have won that title also.

In closing, many thanks to all the parents who supported the boys and the team. Special mention to Brett Jakes - scoring; Rick Porter - umpiring and just being Rick; the Hirschman’s for bravely putting on the Grand Final celebrations; Braydn Mancal for an outstanding job as Captain; Cam Watts for his role as Fielding Captain; Glenn Taylor, the quieter of the two coaches – bringing a level head; and the Committee and Club for supporting the concept.

Lastly, congratulations to all the boys who played, I loved every moment.

Cheers Pete (Marshy)

15 Under 16A

We started the season full of optimism knowing that we would have a very competitive team this year.

There was an opportunity to give players new roles this year with Jonny and Nick our new opening combination, which proved to be a very consistent pairing. Add to that Shubham Bhargave (Shubs), Joel Ludik, Dylan Thomas and Aman Prasad in our middle order it looked very strong batting line up on paper. Our lower order consisting of Jarryd Cox , Cam Srewart , Josh Don Paul and Callum Jones proved to be a very versatile combination. This gave us options on the best way to approach the final overs of games, also not forgetting the best no. 11 in the competition, Jackson Byrnes, who could give us one last burst.

The batting all year was of a very high standard, I think the best line-up in the league!!!

Maybe one thing that was our achilles heel most of the year was our running between wickets and our inability to turn over the strike. Joel and Shubs had tremendous seasons but they couldn’t have achieved this without wonderful contributions from the other 9 batsmen.

With the ball, an opportunity was given to new players with Jackson and Aman (not so new) given the new ball, Jackson had a solid 1st year, he bowls a beautiful outswinger and was ably supported by Josh who with his left-armers was a great variation at 1st change. Both these boys will prove more than a handful with their bowling next season, along with Callum, who despite his late start to the season, improved with every game. There were many good performances throughout the year, but I did particularly enjoy watching Cam’s left-arm chinamen, although I don’t think Jarryd did. Credit to Jarryd who did a great job behind the stumps all year and even snuck in a couple of overs as well.

The fielding followed our bowling a lot. When we bowled well our fielding was first class, but when the bowling wasn’t good, our fielding was also poor. The semi-final probably highlighted this the most, our first 20 overs in the field wasn’t good but our second 20 overs was as good as we have played all year.

Special mention to Joel Ludik, who as captain took a while to warm to the role but as the season progressed, you could see him really become a great leader of the team. Well done Joel.

I would like to thank the following people: Sandun for his help on Tuesday nights, Kathy Braddon for putting the scores in every week, Karl Ludik and John Braddon for helping with the umpiring, Suhas Bhargave and Noel Stewart for scoring plus the many parents who turned up to support the boys.

Finally, I personally would like to thank the boys. I have been with a lot of these boys (should I say men now) since U/12s. It has been my privilege to watch these boys develop from high pitched 8-9yr olds into low pitched mature young men. All of them should be very proud of the way they have developed their games, but also the way they have forged friendships and displayed great sportsmanship over the many years. These boys end a great era where many premierships have been won and numerous individual achievements were reached in representative teams.

It has been my privilege to coach these boys and hopefully they will all develop into long time McKinnon senior players.

Cheers Coxy (Paul Cox)

16 Under 16B (combined side with Brighton District)

The Under 16B’s for season 2014/15 was a combined side between ourselves and Brighton District. The team was only put together on the Wednesday before the first game so we didn’t have an opportunity to meet let alone train with the other boys before our first game. Each club had 7 players with our boys first year U16’s and all bar one of Brighton’s in their second year. To help the team gel it was decided they needed to train together. Training alternated between clubs and there is no doubt it helped in building them into a side that played with spirit and a sense of camaraderie.

Throughout the home and away season we won 6, lost 3 and had one draw. One of the losses came in the last game against the 3rd placed team and resulted in us dropping from 2nd to 4th and having to play the undefeated top side in the semi. It would be fair to say the team struggled with the bat throughout and often struggled to reach three figures. This however, was in contrast to the bowling which was probably the best in the competition. Our top 3 wickets takers snared 20, 18 and 16 wickets for the season. As poor as our batting had been, we thought we could defend any score.

The form line continued in the finals. In the semi we played another merged side. We batted first and only made 65. We had 4 overs at them on the first week and had them struggling at 3/5, including wickets with the last two balls of the day. In the second week the bowlers continued to apply the pressure which was backed up by some sensational fielding. We had three run outs in the semi and eventually bowled the previously undefeated side out for 54 to record an 11 run win.

The excitement didn’t end there with the Grand Final being a closer contest. We had played our opponent in Cluden twice during the season, with both games being close and the record standing at one all. We batted first this time making 67. As occurred in the semi, we had the opposition in trouble early at 3/4 before they recovered to be 5/45. At that stage the odds looked in their favour, but the boys maintained the pressure. Once again fielding was a highlight with two more run outs being recorded. More importantly the buildup in pressure from the whole team made it difficult to score. They were running out of overs and started playing some rash shots eventually losing their last 5 wickets for 15 and being bowled out for 60. Once again it was a thrilling game of cricket and a great way to end the season.

Congratulations must go out to both clubs for agreeing to the merger. It was great for the boys to experience the thrill of winning a premiership but the most important thing was that they were able to play a game of cricket each week.

While the boys enjoyed a lot of on field success, the most pleasing thing was their improvement during the season and unbridled enthusiasm right through to the Grand Final as the belief grew. We won eight of the ten season games, tied the Semi Final and progressed through to the T-16 Semi Final winning three from three matches.

The boys were asked to set themselves goals at the start of the season which ranged from run scores, aggregates, wickets to field talk and we visited this progress throughout the season. It was thrilling to see just a couple of players fall just short while others achieved or smashed these targets. Improvement was certainly helped by the Club initiative of having senior players in Sandun and Ed helping out with drills and clinics.

This really is a great bunch of boys who were well supported by parents happily providing drinks, morning tea and time to set up grounds, umpire, score and input match details online. Kelli Gray made the machine run beautifully as Team Manager and Paul Dunstan was a welcome help as Assistant Coach.

Finals Recap

Having finished second on the ladder on percentage, we were drawn to play third placed Brighton at home in the Semi Final. Brighton sent us in and after a number of big guns not firing, we were looking at a sub- 100 score until Ryan Byrnes played a magnificent Captain’s knock (36*) ably assisted by Xavier Verdnik(19) to post a total of 134.

We believed this was a defendable score against the big hitting Brighton who lost four early scalps thanks in part to Joe’s handy three wickets, only to rally in the middle order. Needing just 11 runs off the last four overs with four wickets in the shed, we were in trouble, that is until Kya came on and took the last four wickets to finish with 4 for 6 off 7, culminating in a tied game. Brighton was gracious with the realization that McKinnon would go through to the GF on account of ladder position.

This pitted us against the well drilled and undefeated Ormond and we sent them in having won the toss. Similarly to the week before, we took some early wickets to then see Ormond rally. The bowling was tight and we were able to bowl them out in 38 overs for 124, something that only one other team had managed to do all year. The boys finished the innings with a real spring in their step believing we could reach this score.

In perfect batting conditions, we lost key early wickets putting ourselves under pressure. Winning this game was always going to be about not being bowled out as the run rate was always within our grasp. With wickets falling around opener Josh Agar, he dug in for a mature and “team first” innings of 24 off 79 balls in a survival situation. He was well supported by Josh Dunstan (18), Hamish Dunlop (11) and Ryan Byrnes(10) but with few others to keep the scorers busy, we were bowled out in 37 overs, falling 41 runs short.

We were very proud of the boys’ behaviour in the face of defeat and know the hunger will be there next year to go one further.

It was a pleasure to coach the U14Bs this season. The boys enjoyed their Friday afternoon cricket and while we didn’t have much on field success, it was great to see the batting, bowling and fielding skills of all the boys develop as the season unfolded.

Despite the determination of the boys, our batting and bowling never quite clicked at the same time in any one game. However, there were some encouraging individual performances during the season. A special mention to Will Hughes who won the batting average, making 136 runs at an average of 17 and Matthew Lightfoot for taking 8 wickets at an average of 21. Congratulation also to our wicket keeper Matthew Falcke for winning the coaches award and Kaleb Thomson for taking out the team award.

Finally, thanks to Steve Harris for performing the role of Team Manager and the many parents who helped out with training, scoring, umpiring and getting matches started on time.

James Tranter

Under 14C (combined side with Carnegie South)

Our merger with Carnegie South was hastily arranged just prior to the season but it was a good move by Paul O'Donnell to ensure all our U14s had a full season of cricket. The boys gelled well together and new friendships were quickly formed. Unfortunately we were not so successful on the field and despite being close on a couple of occasions we failed to win a game. Our main issue was a failure to maintain concentration for extended periods in both batting and bowling. Hopefully we will learn from the experience and be able to show more resilience next year.

Under 12A

After a disappointing 2013/14 season for U12A, the focus for the 2014/15 season was to be on player development and participation. The team's goals were to win 3 or 4 matches for the season and be competitive in the remaining matches.

Round 1 which was a one day match vs. Cheltenham was a successful start to the season with McKinnon easily defeating Cheltenham by 44 runs. U12A went on to win a total of 5 matches in the first half of the season, suffering only a very narrow loss to Brighton in Round 4, who at that stage of the season were arguably the best team in the competition.

The mid-season player award was given to Rishab Kiran for the improvement in his batting and his commitment to attending training each week. McKinnon's U12A team had 2 of its players selected to represent SECA in the VMCU carnival held in January, with Ben Porter competing in the Mitchell Shield team and Boopa Munasinghe in the Josh Brown Plate team. Both boys performed well and both of SECA's teams were undefeated for the entire tournament and were the eventual winners in their respective competitions.

The side played in Brighton Union's annual Lightning Premiership on Feb. 8th, and had a win and a loss in the early rounds. Unfortunately that wasn't sufficient to progress to the finals, but McKinnon's players enjoyed the tournament and learnt a lot about playing the short form of the game.

20 Despite suffering a form slump in the last few rounds of the home & away season, U12A still qualified for the finals by holding onto 4th place on the ladder, with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses for the season, which was a fantastic achievement and exceeded the team's early expectations.

The semi final was vs. Cheltenham, with Cheltenham the in form team of the U12A competition, having only lost one match this season which was back in Round 1 vs. McKinnon. McKinnon limited Cheltenham to only 111 runs, after having them 5 for 27 in the 12th over, and easily scored the necessary runs in the 28th over to pull off an upset win.

The Grand Final was a tightly contested match against Brighton, with Brighton scoring 154 runs in their innings. McKinnon were all dismissed for 153 with the final wicket lost due to a run out on the second last ball of the innings. The Grand Final was played in a great spirit and despite the loss, the team could be very proud of their season and the improvement in both the individual players and the team overall. The team was coached this season by Mark Porter, who is to be commended for the effort he put into training the players and coaching them to a successful season.

The award winners at the end of the home and away season were Finn Sullivan (Bowling Award) for 9 wickets at an average of 7.22, Josh Agar (Batting Award) 187 runs at an average of 62.33 with a highest score of 48 not out, Ben Porter (All-Rounder Award) for 9 wickets at an average of 8.00 and an economy rate of 2.00 and 138 runs at an average of 19.71 and Boopa Munasinghe (Coach's Award) for 4 wickets at an average of 31.50 and 125 runs at an average of 15.63.

The majority of this season's players now move up to the U14 competition next season and it is hoped the improvement displayed this season will continue on at that level.

Under 12B

The Under 12B’s started the season in C Grade and after 3 massive wins, found ourselves promoted to B Grade by Round 5. We welcomed the challenge and continued to perform well. The going definitely got tougher, but we still managed some competitive scores and good wins.

As a result, we found ourselves in the finals, which was very exciting. We played Bentleigh, who batted first, posting 197 runs. This target, proved too difficult for us and our season came to an end.

Congratulations to the award winners and to all the players on a great season.

Special thanks to Isanga and Nain Nainhaho for their valuable assistance with Coaching and organising.

We look forward to next season

21 Under 12D North

The end of another enjoyable season with a great team, the U12D North was a very strong and competitive grouping of teams, of which we were in running for finals place right until the end. Overall we finished 6th, the games that got away from us were all close fought matches.

Key outcomes of the season were:

- The way the lads supported each other as a team - Sportsmanship displayed - Had a great time and formed some great friendships - Improvement and growth in their cricket

Over the season we scored 1316 runs from the bat and took 82 wickets, with every single team member contributing greatly to these figures - this was an outstanding effort.

A big thanks to parents for their support throughout the season, your help on match days and the encouragement and cheering from the boundary was awesome!!

Cheers Ian Hill

Under 12D Central (Gold)

What a great season this team had, playing 16 games for the regular season, and being defeated only once, and then winning the Semi and Grand Finals. Out of a total of 12 boys, 3 were new players for the McKinnon Cricket Club. It was very pleasing to see the improvement in all the boys from the beginning of the year to the end of the season. This was helped by having the Senior Captain Coach, Sandun Dias coming to every training session. This was the first year that the club had done this, and it paid huge dividends with noticeable improvement in all of the junior teams.

Grand Final McKinnon 5/113 defeated Highett 6/106

This game was played by the 2 best teams of the season who finished 1st and 2nd on the ladder with a total of 3 losses between them. The toss was won by Highett, with them electing to bowl first. Our captain, Lane, and the rest of the team had wanted to bowl first if we won the toss. This contributed to our success in the Grand Final as it can be challenging to chase a good score when batting last.

Our first 3 batsmen, Michael Guerra(20no), Lane Donohue(4) and Thivi Salwathura (20no) kept the scoring moving quickly until Michael and Thivi retired. Charlie Manning (2), Daniel Wall (13no), Oliver Helmore(3) and Callum Harris (8) continued the scoreboard ticking over during the middle overs. The final batsmen were told to run and back up hard and go for their shots for the final few overs. Bailey Gallop(10no), James Helmore (4), who played the shot of the year with a great off drive, Jesse Austin (3no) and Alex Kinna (1) did as they were asked to help the team finish with a final score of 5/113, which was our highest score of the year.

Highett got off to a flying start, going after the first 3 overs before our bowlers got on top with some tight bowling. All the boys bowled and fielded well with Alex 2/15, James 1/9, Bailey 1/1, Lane 1/1 and Daniel 22 1/6 taking the wickets. Highett required 24 off the last 6 overs with 6 wickets in hand and with the game slipping away from us, all the boys rallied and encouraged each other. All the bowlers were well supported by Michael Guerra who was the keeper for the entire match. Lane as captain, took control of the fielding positions, kept the talk up, and was asked to bowl the last over. Highett required 8 runs off the last over, and Land kept it to 1 run.

It was a fantastic game of cricket and both teams and parents should be proud of the sportsmanship that their children displayed.

I would like to congratulate our 12th man Tarkyn Isaacs, who was unable to play in the GF due to an injury he sustained. He was a valuable member of this team.

Man of the match voted by the umpires – Thivi Salwathura

Individual award winners were: Batting - Daniel Wall; Bowling - Thivi Salwathura; Coach’s - Lane Donohue; Team – James Helmore

There were plenty of personal bests achieved during the season for the 12D Gold, and everyone made a contribution to the team’s performance you can see from the statistics below. I am sure that all of these boys will have a long and successful time in their future cricket endeavours.

May I take this opportunity to thank Paul O’Donnell for his contribution as Junior Co-ordinator, the parents for their ongoing assistance at training and match days, Steve Harris as Team Manager, Lisa Hill as U12 Co- ordinator and Jarrod Harris for scoring when he was available.

24 Under 12D Central (Purple)

The 2014/15 season brought together a band of enthusiastic participants from last year’s Rookies team (7 players), along with a few new faces to the purple team. We played the season for the most part with 10 players and picked up Vignesh Padamati toward seasons end to top our team up to 11.

The team played competitively throughout the season. Their average winning margin was 46 runs whilst the average margin we fell short was only 24. Six of these games we fell short by only 22 runs or less. On numerous occasions the ‘extras’ played a part in the result of the game as the boys are all still developing these skills. Our team was certainly not alone in this area!

The enthusiasm at training and on game day was fantastic. The dedication from the parents also saw constant development in these skills in each of the boys. As confidence develop we started to see more catches, stumpings and run outs. Each of the team contributed in one way or another to some fantastic results.

Luke Agar developed into our leading all-rounder with 115 runs and 7 wickets. This led to him being awarded the mid-season medal and also the batting award for the season. Through consistent bowling and no extras, Jackson Hill was awarded the bowling award with an economy rate of 2.14. Harrison Zandberg was awarded the Coaches award for his enthusiasm, dedication and improvement over the season. He made 99 runs and took 6 wickets. Kobe Francis won the Rising Star award for his development and commitment throughout the season. His confidence blossomed after a big step up from T20 into the D section.

I won’t mention stats for all the boys but it’s fair to say that Arjun Nair, Bailey Fitzsimon, Boaz Gore, Brock McCulloch, Harvey Palma, Jack Flower and Vignesh Padamati all came along in leaps and bounds and had lots of personal milestones throughout the season. We had a young team in comparison to others but certainly matched them all in effort and enthusiasm.

The dedication from Graham, assisted by the other Dads at training, in teaching them the basic skills week to week paid dividends with the boys improving as the season went on. Each game they appear to gel and bond together into a cohesive and fun little team.

Thanks to the parents for their dedication and support in filling the many game day volunteer roles. This also extends to getting them to the ground on time and being there to support them. You are all to be congratulated as many teams do not have nearly as much support on match day as we had!

Thanks again to Rob Gore for sitting there week after week to very capably record the stats for us. It makes it a lot easier to enter the scores in each week when the book has all the checks and balances correct!

Also, thanks to Craig for umpiring for most of the games.

In summary, a big thanks to everyone. I hope the boys have enjoyed a rewarding season and are looking forward to coming back to McKinnon next season to move onward and upward!

25 MILO Programs

Another great year for our Milo Programs

In2CRICKET for the beginners saw 30 budding young cricketers have in fun and learning the game.

We had many skill based activities, but also a lot of games providing fun and competition. It was great to see the parents getting involved and enjoying it almost as much as the kids!!

Thanks to all who participated and assisted throughout the season. Special thanks to Colin Gray for coordinating and to Under 14 player, Jacob Gray, who kindly gave up time to assist and teach the kids.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone back at the club next season.

The T20Blast! Program is thriving in our region! This accommodates players between the In2CRICKET and Junior Cricket. We had 24 participants in the Moorabbin T20Blast Centre playing 16 Over games against other teams. The games are fast and fun, and are designed to hone the skills, whilst promoting teamwork and game sense. We are hoping for good numbers in this program next season and also hope to see quite a few of these young players in Junior “Rookie” Cricket.

Thanks to the parents for assisting in managing, umpiring, scoring and organising the players. Special thanks to Max Fato, Sandy MacArthur, Darryl Lasnitzki and others who took on coordinating roles at times.

26 PAST PLAYERS ASSOCIATION REPORT

On 7th February this year we held our annual luncheon which has now been running for six years. All up 42 past players were in attendance, many of which stayed on after the function to watch our 1st eleven set up a fantastic win against top side, South Caulfield.

The feature of this year’s function was the celebration of 50 years since the double premiership wins of the 1st & 2nd eleven teams of 1964/65. This was a momentous occasion in the history of the club, especially as it resulted in us gaining entry into Senior Division, of the then VJCA, for the very first time.

During the function Terry Lorkin and Arthur Pritchard gave their account of that 1964/65 season in the 1st eleven and later Alan Copsey did the same on behalf of the 2nd eleven. Later in the afternoon Club President, Peter Fitchett, presented trophies, scorecards and photos of each eleven to each member of the respective teams.

The luncheon also incorporated the holding of our AGM, where the following members were elected:

President: Ken Hilton Vice-Presidents: Greg Fitzgerald & Chris Whitehead Secretary: Russell Dowling Treasurer: Adrian Keane General Committee: Dean Amon, Graham Hill & Peter Warren Senior Committee Representative: Ben Charles

After six years, Ken Dowling decided to step down from the committee of the Past Players Association.

On behalf of the Past Players Association I would like to thank Ken firstly, for his efforts in establishing the Past Players Association and then for his continued dedication and enthusiasm as President for the following five years. This consolidated the Association as an important part of our much loved cricket club.

We welcome to the committee for the first time, Past Player, Peter Warren and look forward to his involvement in the coming year.

On behalf of the committee I would like to thank President, Ken Hilton and all committee members for their support and efforts in, once again, putting together another successful annual luncheon.

A we have done in the past, this year we arranged the mounting and display of premiership memorabilia, including repairs where needed and Ken Dowling generously supplied all members of premiership teams with a photo and scorecard of their achievements, together with a letter encouraging continuing participation with the Club.

Congratulations to all club premiership teams - Under 18s, Under 16Bs, Under 12 Gold and the T20 team.

The Past Players Committee greatly appreciates the support we receive from Club President Peter Fitchett, Secretary Ben Charles, Treasurer Jill Watts and the members of the Senior Committee.

Thanks to everyone for your support throughout the past 12 months and we look forward to another great “Maccas year” in 2015/16.

27 KEN HILTON PLAYER OF THE YEAR NIGHT

Once again the Player of the Year Night was held at the Bentleigh RSL. Attendances were down a little on last year, but those who did attend enjoyed an eventful evening. On the day of his birthday our veteran MC, Jason Watts finally handed the lectern over to his successor Jacob Stone. After a hesitant start Jacob soon had the audience in the palm of his hand.

President Peter Fitchett welcomed the Club’s dignitaries along with past winners of the prestigious Ken Hilton Player of the Year. Just what year did you win Fitch?

The first award announced was the Clubperson(s) of the Year, with very popular winners in Lisa Halasz and Karyn Cox, ensuring that the players can look forward to more mouth watering afternoon teas next season, with particular emphasis on the do-nuts.

Young gun Regan O’Brien was awarded the Charles (Chucky) Greenough Award for the U21 Player of the Year. Coach Sandun Dias was there to present the award but we are still trying to find Regan.

Whilst there was no award for the Lawrie Gillott Medal this season, Stuart Hamstead spoke of Lawrie and of the huge impact he had at the Club and how he influenced our lives with his enthusiasm and love of McKinnon.

The Peter Watts Medal for the champion player in the 1st X1 was presented to Brad Kruger by Peter’s daughter Laura.

After much tension and speculation, Michael Watts was named the Ken Hilton Player of Year for 2014-15. A popular win for a very deserving player at the Club, Michael now adds his name to a long list of Watts’s who have won this award.

In closing the night President Peter Fitchett reminded us of the qualities of the people for whom the various awards are named and encouraged the younger players to strive to achieve a similar impact at the Club.

Thanks again to Amanda for her outstanding work on the Power Point Presentation and for her assistance in the organisation of the night. Thanks to Jacob Stone for facing the howling mob and coming out on top. Great job Stoner, hope to see you back next season. Thank you to Alex and the staff at the Bentleigh RSL for having us and making sure our big night was a success.
