Every year, my favorite holiday comes just five 9111 Jefferson Highway days after the most important day on the Jewish Baton Rouge, LA 70809-2496 calendar. Why must always follow Yom 225-924-6773 Kippur so closely? How can we possibly give Sukkot its well-deserved attention when holiday fatigue seems to be lurking everywhere? Perhaps Rabbi Natan Trief our sages made a mistake when putting together President Mark Hausmann the Jewish calendar many hundreds of years ago? 1st Vice Pres. Michelle Levy I think about it this year, and I arrive at this 2nd Vice Pres. Mark Posner conclusion: The timing can be no other way! Treasurer Steven Winkler It provides one of the essential lessons of the Secretary Susan Smolinsky holiday: Lest we forget the fundamental message Sisterhood Diane Dean of teshuvah and humility that the instill in us, we observe Sukkot Robin Fletcher right afterwards to reinforce the message. After all, Sukkot is the Jewish holiday Men’s Club John Carlson par excellence that takes us out of our routine, and reminds us of that which is important in life. Just as the shofar “awakens the slumberer,” so too does Sukkot Regular Features shake us out of our complacency. How could we possibly think life is “business as usual” when we eat and congregate outside our walls in a temporary and flimsy Rabbi’s Message 1 booth? The Board Message 2 One of the more interesting rules concerning Sukkot is one dealing with reading. Brotherhood 2 As with most other acts, Jewish law tells us that we should do our reading within BaRTY News 2 the sukkah. In so creating this caveat, our sages teach us that people need a Special Events 5 semblance of stability and comfort in order to engage in certain matters. Announcements & Reminders 10 If this is true for reading, how much more so for other acts, acts which seem Donations 11 to us mundane and taken-for-granted in our modern world of convenience? So many of our brothers and sisters have endured havoc with recent storms and still do not have a home, a home to instill in them an essential sense of normalcy. As Please see our pull-out calendar for we dwell in our booths, we think of them and commit ourselves to action. As we dates and times of services, special recover from the intensity of , we spring to action with the holiday meetings, Religious and Hebrew School of Sukkot. As we transform ourselves through the acts of prayer and teshuvah, schedules. Also on the calendar are Sukkot reminds us that the exercise was not in vain. More importantly, we remind candlelighting times, weekly parshiot, the world of our Jewish values and our unbreakable partnership with God. as well as congregational birthdays, Yom Kippur has just ended and I breathe a sigh of relief. Within that sigh, an anniversaries and yahrzeits. exciting call to action begins to brew! I look forward to seeing you all in the Sukkah very shortly... Bivracha,

Shabbat Does Not End Friday Night1 . . . Saturday is , Too! The Board Message As a young child in this very synagogue in the 1980s and young children sang songs, blew their own shofars, and early 1990s, I remember the Beth Shalom religious school enjoyed round challah and apples with honey. It was a time program thriving with Jewish children and an abundance of of celebration, with Nick leading the group by engaging engaged families. When we moved to Beaumont, Texas in the children in what the holidays mean and how we can 1993, my very small synagogue religious school had three participate in them.
