This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project to make the world’s books discoverable online. It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that’s often difficult to discover. Marks, notations and other marginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book’s long journey from the publisher to a library and finally to you.

Usage guidelines

Google is proud to partner with libraries to digitize public domain materials and make them widely accessible. Public domain books belong to the public and we are merely their custodians. Nevertheless, this work is expensive, so in order to keep providing this resource, we have taken steps to prevent abuse by commercial parties, including placing technical restrictions on automated querying. We also ask that you:

+ Make non-commercial use of the files We designed Google Book Search for use by individuals, and we request that you use these files for personal, non-commercial purposes. + Refrain from automated querying Do not send automated queries of any sort to Google’s system: If you are conducting research on machine translation, optical character recognition or other areas where access to a large amount of text is helpful, please contact us. We encourage the use of public domain materials for these purposes and may be able to help. + Maintain attribution The Google “watermark” you see on each file is essential for informing people about this project and helping them find additional materials through Google Book Search. Please do not remove it. + Keep it legal Whatever your use, remember that you are responsible for ensuring that what you are doing is legal. Do not assume that just because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other countries. Whether a book is still in copyright varies from country to country, and we can’t offer guidance on whether any specific use of any specific book is allowed. Please do not assume that a book’s appearance in Google Book Search means it can be used in any manner anywhere in the world. Copyright infringement liability can be quite severe.

VOCABULARY . GRAMMAR

OF THE BULLOM LANGUAGE.

. . OF LETTERS AND THEIR POWERS.

IN the Bullom Alphabet there aie twenty-three let- ters, viz. a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, k, 1, m, n, o, p, q, r, S, t, U, V, W, y. Six of these are , viz. a, e, i, 0, u, y. The b, dt f, k, I, m, p q, s, t, v, and w, have the same powers as in English. c, is used only in connection with h and k : in the former, it sounds like ch in child; in the latter, it ir used merely to avoid the reduplication of k. g, is always hard, as in gold, glad, gun. gb, is a very difficult pronunciation : wherefore g it oftentimes omitted by strangers, which renders the B language, or the sentence of the speaker, e~theren- tirely unintelligible, or eives quite a different meaning to what the speaker intended to say, as there are several words only distinguished by g : thus, bang siguifies any !hing that is had ; gbang signifies to-mor- row ;- beng, a hoard ;gbeng, glory ;-bet, a box ;gbet, a ring ;-bannah, a plantain ; gbannah, the title of a 1 chief;-gborr, or ~gborr,a herd of sheep ; bow, or ubm, a generation of people. I gh, sounds as in ghost. h, commmly sounds like h in .hat, horse, &c. ; but when followed by c, i, or v, it seems to be a mere , aspiration ; it sounds very much like h in hew, hewer. .In the following words: hml, four ; uhiant, a child, pronounced as if written uhyant ; huoy, a cloud : it is 1 pronounced rather through the nose as it were : 'b denotes the preceding to be short. I j. There appears to be no sound in the Bullom Lan- 1 page like j or g soft, as in English : dy may supply the place of j, in some measure, in the words '&Z, to i kill ; Zyo, to eat ; ilyall, flesh, body. But it would not be advisable to write them with j, as both d and y are pronounced as if the words were written, ii-yall, tl-ye, d-yo. The names Jack and Jim are very com- mon among the Bulloms ; but they pronounce them 1 Yack, Yehmy. It will be, however, necersary to in- troduce the letter j in the Bullom Alphabet, on ac- count of the words or proper names which, by teach- ing them to read, will certainly occur; but as their I tongues seem to be inhxible in this point, they must. be left to their own way of pronouncing it : thus Jerw Salem, Jeremia, John, Judas, Jacob, must k pro- nounced Yeruadern, Yeremia, Yehn, Yudas, Yakob. n, before any vowel, except y,.souuds as in Epglish : no, and ; n~h,not; nin, people; no, a perm: WP ntlme, to extinguish. d, before consonants, is a sasal sound: as, nfo'h, speech, language ; ndi;rick, benefit ; ngworte, this ; riyarra, thin, lean. ri, before m, b, p, is pronowed like m, thus: nbuntha, a parable; lipwthirr, uproar, tumult; amo'h, milk ; as if written dbuntha, mpunthirr, vivaoh. n' is employed, further, to point out the plurals da great many nouns : it is also the charactecistic af the second person singular, in all tenses of the verbs. But as much attention must be paid to this n' as 40 be- fore b ;otherwise the speaker will be liable to make a great many blunders, as there are wordq distiq- guished only by the ri, thus : chang, to pass ; riclng, teeth ;-4bt, monkey-apples ; h-unt, the ,monkey- apple-tree. fig&is a very strong nasal sound: ugh, they; nghen&z, you; hat& ngh~ll,to endeavour; ngho, nghom, who, what r, bas thee dserent sounds. At the begbning of words it is hard, as in rage, river, rome: thus, hallZ ramhg, to pray, pronounaed as if written rrawling ; tong, verily, truly-to give it mom force, &e Bulloms my, ~r'r'ongdoug, it is very true; r'til, darkness, pronounced as if written rrtill. ' r, preceded by t, is very soft; it is hardly percep- tible in the words, traa, a nest; tre, the article the ; trim, time. r, followed by m, sounds as in lawn, farm, hm, &c. I ah, sounds like eh in dull. th, sounds like th in thin, thought. 1 y, as heard in ydm, young, year. a, is another letter the sound of whicb I have not observed in the Bullom Language ; the names written with that letter must be writtee in the Bullom witb t : , thus, Sakarias, Sabulon, Scbcdcc, for Zacharias, Zabu- lon, Zebedee. , 1

According to the plan adopted to write the Bull- I Language, there are thirteen vowel sounds.

Letten denoting the Words containing the

simple munds. dmple sounds. " a ...... as heard in ...... father, far. e ...... as heard in ...... met, get. e ...... as heard in ...... me, meet. E ...... as heard in ...... tbere. i ...... as heard in ...... hill, fill, bit. o ...... as heard in ...... not, no. u .,...... as heard in ...... bull, full. Q .,,,., .,,.., aa heard in .,,.,, ,,,.., bat, cut. 5 Words eontoiling

o'i and ui are npt exactly to be considered as gut- tural sounds : they are formed in the back of the mouth, in a way that is rather difficult to imitate the Bulloms.

Beside the above-mentioned vowel sounds, i and u have a long sound, as in fine, mule, &c.: as, sighno, a palm-wine-maker ; nqui, oil ; hlZC num, to extin- guish. But it is only in these two words that i and u have thus occurred to me. y, as a vowel, occurs only at the end of some words : as, Zippy, beautiful ; upill', idleness ; hullc rorry, to mix ; sofally, an ass : where it sounds ac in the Eugliih words beauty, truly, sorry, &c. , PART 11. OF THE PARTS- OF SPEECH.

0,F THE ARTICLE. THERE is but one Article in the Bullom Language, tre, used in various ways. 1. It always follows the substantive or noun with which it is connected ; as, k

CHAPTER 11,

OF SUBSTANTIVES. There are three sorts of Substantives, viz. 1. Common Substantives : such as, pokan, a man ; lakan, a woman ; muay, a horse ; kill, a house ; mna, a tree ; shall, a river. 2. Abstract Substantives, such as hvoy, joy; bong- huh, grief; gbeng, glory. 3. Proper names, as, Sabah, Shackah, Sheelo'h, Robenkeh, Wellwell. 4. Substantives are derived from verbs, as follows:- from hall2 son, to dream ; son, a dream : from hall; tennin, or tdhnin, to consider ; EtFhn, thought: from hall; fo'h, to speak ;dfo'b, language : from hul& tollih, to comfort ; ntolli'h, comfort, consolation ; tolli'hno, comforter. But the greatest part of substantives derived fran verbs are, either by placidg u before the illfinitive of the ; or by adding no, a person, to the : as, hulli; diii, to steal; iidili, theft; duino, a thief ;-hall; gball, to write ; iigball, writing; gballno, a writer ;-hull? gb?h, to walk aboht ; iigbPh, walking, travelling ; gbzhno, a traveller ;-hall? vailC, to redeem ;iivaili!, redemption ;vaileno, redeemer ;- hallg bempah, to circumcise ; ubempah, circumcision ; -hally kissy, to finish ; ukissy, the end ;-hall? &ah, . to visit ; l?rn?ahn, visiting ; mcahno, a stranger. When substautives begin wvih E, n, or ti, the accent is on the second syllable : as, Zbdll, before ; Zndng, to- day ; iikdnt, a monkey-apple ; rifo'h, speech, lan- guage. To substantive3 belong Gender, Number, and Case.

SECT I.-Of Gender. I There are two genders in the Bullom Language, viz. the Masculine and the Feminine : peh, ngho, aud la, are used to denote inanimate things, and persons un-. known. The sexes are distinguished in.two different ways, vie. 1. By different worcls : as, Papa'h ...... father Yah ...,.. mother langbang ... bachelor waritim ., maid traak ...... son wang ... daughter pintra ...... brother wantim ... sister kunkiireh ... cock iisock... .. hen 9 2. By adding the words pokan, male, and lakau, female, to the substantive ; as, no pokaa ...... man no lakan ...... wifb ! Snar e pokan ... Bullock enar 8 loLab ... cow sonlah pokan ...a lion sonlah lakan ... lioness purr e polran ... a boar. purr e lakan ... a sow. The diminutives are formed by adding pom'h, little ones, to the substantives : as, cloak ti pomo'h, dnckHsgs ; Zsok i.'ponao'h, chickens ; Zkiilfing Zpomo'h, a kid ; lonkobch pomo'h, a lamb ; chimhy pm'h, a small plate ; ~nesahpm'h,a small table. But when it is said ef the size of a person or child, toon is used : as, iihirmt. u toon, a little child : noma taon, a small person ; langbang toon, a little man. The thumb and the large toe are considered as maaculinc : they mre caned iistih 6 pokan, the male finger, adawem itpokan, the mak toe : all the rert are termed iisiih ii lakan, and ewem ii lakan, female fingers, and female toes ; except the little finger and the little toe, which are distinguished by porno'h.

The Bulloms have but two Numbers, the aip6dar and the plural. The latter is formed in five dzeremt ways, viz. by placing ah, 2, n, 8, and tl: before tbe singular: ah is used onlj of persons, apd sZ ~f esi- mais. FIRST SOBT OP PLURALS. Singular. When the article or an adjective is joined to a substantive beginning with 5 or u, the same letter that begins the substantive is placed between the article nnd the substantive, or between the substantive and the adjective ; in which case, the article is placetl be- hind the adjective: as, ? buss i; bang, bad smell ; ugbo u bomung, a large tiger; Ekulung 2 pomo'h tre, the little goats. When the article or an adjective is joined with any I substantives in the plural number, the same letter or ' syllable which the plural begins with, is placed be- tween the substantive and the article or the adjec- / tive : as, ah nin ah ben, old people ; hrni; will, lofty trees; dtui n'diuh, red cheeks ; sEp8 si; bm, ol& elephants; tzkill te' bomung, large houses; ah tamu ali tre, the boys; hmE tre, the trees ; nbannah r tre, the plantains. 1 But when the article or all adjective is added to a substantive in the plural number beginning with s? or ti: ; the si; or ti; at tbe beginning of the words is omitted.: as, nen tE ting, two years ; kill tE bmung, large houses; nm sE nyarra, lean oxen ; soosi; be mung, large fishes; kulung sZ tre, the goats; foll ti: #re, the eyes.

SECT. 111.-Of C-. 1 The nouns admit of no change of termination : tw express the different cbnnections and relations of one thing to another, the prepositions ha, ko, and hallc are made use of. Singular. Nom. pokan ...... a man Gen. ha pokan ...... of a man Bat. ko pokan ...... to a man Ace. pokan ...... a man Poc. pokan ...... man Abl. ha OF halle pokan .from a maw. As the Nominative, Accusative, and Vocative, are alike, and dso the Genitive and the Ablative, I shall omit the Accusative, Vocative, and Ablative cases, bnd make use only of the Nominative, , and Objective cases in declining nouns and pronouns. Plural. Nont. ah pokan ...... men Pass. ha or hoa ah pokan ... of men Obj. ko 61. hdlt ah pokan ...to men. Singulat.. Nom. eyou ...... a fish Poss. ha eyou ...... ,..... of a fir11 0 ko,eyou ...... to a fish. Plural. Nom. shoo ....,...... fishes Poss. ha sesoo ...... of fisller Obj. ko shoo ...... to fishes. The plurals of you, id fish; and kill, a house, are s&oo and tzkill ; but in connection with the article or adjective, they are decliwd as above. The jest, sc- cond, and third declinations are regular : as. 1 .pokar Ire, the man ; ah pokan ah trc, the men ; ah pokan nh keleng trc; the good men : 2. bell tre, the nut; ;bell 2; tre, the nuts ; ;bell t: kat trc, the hard nuts: 3. iilii Ire, the star; nlii n' tre, the .stars; nlui n dinteh trc, the bright stars : but the fourth gnd fifth may be considered irregular, as the .vi and tt. are not retained at the beginning of thcse plurals, wlien coo- nected wit11 other words in a sentence. ., .CHAPTER . 111,

OF ADJECTIVES, AND THE DEGREhS OF COM- PARISON.

The Adjective is not varied on account of gender, pumber, and case. When added to auy noun in thq singular number, beginning with t? or ii, the adjective receives the same vowel with which the substantive begins. When added :to nouns plural, the adjective receives the same letter or syllable which the sub- stantive plural begins with, as observed page 12. In forming the comparative degree of an adjective, theBulloms in general addbl to the positive: as, teng, sweet; tengul, sweeter : kath, hard ; kathal, harder r dees, heavy ; deesul, heavier. In forming the superlative degree, ngho chang, or peh chang, is made use of: as, kathl hard; kathulg harder j ngho chang kath, it passes hard, i. e. hard- est: .took, hot ; toohl, hotter ; peh chang took; it passes heat-it is hottest. This seems to be the regu- lar way of comparison. The comparison of Adjectives is also made in the following manner : as, keRng, good ; yenkdeng, better ; ngho' chung k~l~lcg, best : bii$e, cold ; ii bGfle G gbir, much cold or colder ; peh chang buse, it passes cold-~oldes t, In some instances, chng is used to point( out the comparative, and chang oh bulcing the superlative, degree : as, langbang fosso, a strong man ; lang- bang to chang fosso, this man passes strength-he is stronger ; Zangbang to fosso chung ah buleing, thio man's strength passes all-he is strongest.

In the plural number, the personal pronouns admit of no alteration. La, ngho, and p:h, are used to express the pronoun' it. (page 8.) La and ngho are used in the singular, and pt.h seems to be used cl~ieflyin the plurdl number: as, thin woa ngha la, " not Ire made it ;" ii chi% ah ngho, "he brought it;" woa hiy?h ngho, '' he took it ;"p~h tit:h y:h woore, '' it or they rau after lrim ;"peh suntah looa r;, '"some things orpersons (unknown) struck hirn." As fir as I 11pve; been able to obserue, thfre are nine Relative Pronouns iq the gullo~nLanguage ; viz. ngha, ngho, ma, nghel, neh, yeh, hin ah, utonno, ko?no. SECT. IV.-Of Demonstrative Pronouns. The Demonstrative Pronouns are, to, ki, tnannaih, ngunna, and kollung. Poke noma to kondy, this woman's husband is gone. T@,connected with wonno, signifies the same, or this very person : as, no lakan to wonno, this (very) woman. Agunna, preceded by to, seems to be used of things, like to wonno of persons ; as, rum to tiggnna, this (same) tree. Kg add munnah are used indifferently, sometimes in the singular and sometimes in the plural number, of things : signifying this, tkse. Kollung, the same, this. The signification of #ollung is equal to to wonno. CHAPTER V.

OF VERBS. .The greater part of Bullom Verbs consist of one s~llable, some of two, and a very few of three syllables. They all begin with consonilots : a great many begin wit11 ch, J, and gb ;very few with ng qasal. Tbe active verbs are followed by the particles, ah, d, and oh, without altering the signification of the verb : as, ha112; meal ah, to call, to nonlinate ; halll vaili; ch, to redeem ; hall; chi2 ah, to bring; hall6 maw ah, to love ; hllZ turn oh, to beg ; hall; choo oh, to warn. Neuter verbs are made causal, by addmg i: to the verb: as, iurlli; hin, to lie down, to rest; halli; Ik'ni; to cause to lay down;-hall; till, to come down; halli; till& to cause to come down, to take down ;- halli; kill, to drink ; ball; kill;, to cause to drink, to give drink, to suckle. Neuter verbs are made negative, by adding Z~Uto the verbs ending with consonants: as, kU2 hin, to liedown, to rest ;-halli; hini!hn, not laid down, not at rest ;-hall; kull, to drink ; hall; kullchn, not drink- jog;-hallz tull, to descend ; hall; kuldihu, not de- scending;-hall; senm, to stand; ha& semChn, not standing. To verbs ending with a, hn only ir added : as, hall& nu'nta, to be bold, impudent; haII1; mirtuhn, not bold ;--haNe yatta, to row ; yattahr, not rowing. To verbs ending with any other vowel, the syllable k7hn is added : as, halle loi, to enter ; loiki?hr, not entered ;-hnllr moi, to cow; mwikchn, not coming. These causal and negative verbs are conjugated ; but wbkther through all tenses I cannot sag. 1 have met with them anly iu the preseht and imperfect tenses : as, hh *e&iNn, '' I dcitt't stand figboll ii woa ka hinilrn, *' his heatt did not lay ddwtP-thd is, lie was restless, udeasy. Of the Tenses.

TCe verbq @reinv~iable in all their perspnq : tlte moods and tenses are formed by the lrel~of particles ot htj~ipgverbs. The present tense is fqrmed by placing tbe per- qoql peoyp befgre the iilf+sitivesf the verb : as, k(li &e, $Q be or te, dwell: ah $w, J dwell ;-uk 4it:@, I bfiqg ; n 40, thoa .goest ; 4 moi, he comes. iypey$~cttease is formed by adtli~gri t~)the P!wFe( tem~: as, ah &oe re, 1 dseh ; 4 FA% rk, I %ou& The perfect tense h formed by pliciug the particle ka between the nolninative and the verb, as it stands in the imperfect tense : as, ah La choe ri;, I have dwelt ; ah ka tu"i rc, I have heard. 24 To form the pluperfect tense, rZ is omitted, anrl the participle of the verbs halli: kung, or halll: gbing, are placed between the particle ka end the verb conjugated : as, ah ka kundy tui, I finished hearing; ah gbingrz choe, I finished dwelling. - Sometimes verbs are followed by nang, wl~icl~only serves tcr point a past action. Yah hndy signifies " 1finished ;" yah kundy nang, I finished same time ago. There are three different ways of forming the future tenses of verbs. 1. The present tense is used to express the future, as follows : Yuckno trc ha rai to rooa moa ka iitcalin nzainbull ha tl: uboko'h, the bearer of this letter wilt give thee five fathoms of blue baft ;" Kunny woa ko ko ke' Furry halll: uoto'h n y&ick, " Kunny will go to Furry to get goods ;" yah moa ngha wong, " I shall send them to thee)" yah moa k~hm pant, '* I shall look for some for thee.'' 2. The future tense is expressed by an : as, yah ko l:ssho, I shall go to-morrow. 3. Hun, to come, is placed between the nominative md the verb in the present tense, to etpress the fu- ture : as, ah choe. I dwell ; ah hun choe, I come to dwell, or I shall or will dwell ;yah hun men#, I shall br will teach; iiwantim won hun kum tamu, a virgid shall bring forth a sow; tooa hun vailL; eh anb he, he shll redeem his people. Of Moods.

. The iedicative mood simply indicates or deelares a thg: as, ah gball, I write ;nko, thou pest ; ww glmt;kan, he runs. The imperative mood is used chietly for oom- manding ; for which purpose the Bulloms we tbe se- cond person singular and plural of the indicative mood, the present tense : as, rib, go tbou ; nba, thou &?st, and give thou ; ngkngha ke, yoo go, .od go ye, The second person singular is ofiee wed and uhderstood as a plural : as, ni ' ma way, fear not ; 4, come ; ni bats, sweep ; m pack@, pay. But as the imperative mood is used also for exhorting aod permitting, the Bulloms make use of ngk to express the English word c"et, permit ;" and conjugate their imperative thus :-ngh ah ttti', let me hear ; ngha ii ko, lebhim go; ngba ht; kc, let us see; ngha ngha ramling, let them pray The Bulloms form a negative imperative, by placing ma ngiq between the nominative and the verb: as, nw ngha eheh ka, thou shalt not, Or must not, dwell here; ii ma ttgha ngha m pant ka, he must not work here ; hi: ma ngha ngha ngho, we must not do it; ~ghama ngha tun, they must not sing. The potetitial mood is formed by placing the parti- cle no between the nominative and the verb: as, ah ko pehr~hna chum pzah, that I also may worship; kt; la way t-t; Fog mama, we should give God thanks; Lii E na nghall hullt; nghu woo u hooy, we should try to make him glad ; u yZZ rrgha Zoa peh na kum K&t ah? he inquired, where Christ should be born ? .I .I ! OF SYNTAX. . ;,,

THE agreement of the Substaotive with the A4ee- tive, the Relative with the Antecedent, and the No- minative with the Verb, is the same in the Bullom as in other languages, with the exception of a few pecu- liarities of that langnage. With regard 10 the general order of words, the chief circumstances to be remembered are, that the substantive precedes the article, the adjective, and the personal pronoun. The nominative precedes the genitive. All other cases and parts of speech, in - most ,respects, differ very little from our way of arranging them ; as will be seen by the following fables. related by a Bullom, who knows very little of any language but his own.

I auc Tew m0% . . Thy Frhdi . . SHUKAEL SHACK& From the . above fables and very simple letters* which are translated almost word tbr word, it appears as if there were but very little difference between the manner of the Builoms arranging their words and the manner in which it is done in our own language. The letters were first written in English and translated into ~ullom,'and ailerwards translated from tbe Bd- fom again into English. We shall now proceed to take a view of what seems to be most remarkable in the arrangement of & different parts of speech.

SECT.. I. The article is always preceded by the subs-tantiv~ by the substantive and adjective, and by several snb- rtantives in a question. It is sometimes placed be- tween the substantive and the adjective, perhaps im- properly. The article is entirely omitted : as, in the lablee, elephant and goat went to lion : caterpillar and tor- toise were travelling. It is made me of, as ia obserted page 6.

When iwo rubstantives stand in opposition, the article is added to the latter : as, Duty buy tre, David the King,' Isaiah prophet he, " Isaiah the prophet." When one substantive governr another, signifying 8 63 different thing in the poeeessive case ; as, " my ik- Lber's house," " the king's palace," " the chief'r son ;" the Bulloms say thus : kiiZ appa ))2L; tre trok demo tre. They cannot dlace ** father" before

*f house," ** chief" before *' sou," withopt giving it qaite a different signification. Thus : wom bay tre, is " the king's vessel ;" but, bay wool tre, is " the ~essel's king," or the king of the vessel ;" i. 6. '' captain, commander of the veesel." , In some cases ha or hod is plaoed betwxeu the two substantives, to denote the genitive case ;as, book tre ha uborr hoa Jcsus, '* the book of the generation of Jesus ;" yo6 ka John, the mother of John ;" mla- ka ha Foy, *"e angel of God ;" bay ha ah Jew be, " king of the Jews." But to say the king's house, it cannot be said, bay ha kill tre, which signifies " tlrp king of the house," as above ; bay wmn tre, " the king of tbe canoe." It must be said then, wona bay te, *' the king's canoe," and kill bay tre, " the king's bouse." SE~T.III. The ailjectives admit of no change at all; they always agree with their substantives in gender, num- ber, and case. SECT. 1V. The verb agrees with its nominative case in number and person. One verb governs another that follows, or depends upon it in the infinitive mood : as, ah yd ma hallc prrcnj ** I desire to learn ;" ah lpoi rt; Iblli; ke4 mocr, .&.Icalhe .to ree thee." BaZ wfien it is said of an, distant peridd or furnw time, than the pronoun of tbe person to be visit.& ieplaeed between tht notni~ati~e and the verb :as, ph nrotdko Mlii hh, cc I shall come to see thee,"-IiteraJly. " 1 theego to see ;* woo tnon &a uieehliwmainbull, " ba will give thee six fathoms ;*' k~r~hwhma kb d paom, bur I shall look for some thee,''-literally. " but I thee see some ;'' yuh ma ngha wmg, *' I shall send them te thee," or I thee 'them send." SBCT. V. ThC Bnlkms make use of some particles and single letters connected with words 'and sentences,' without altering the import of the words er sentence, merely as ornaments of the language. Thus, uh, ?b, and oh are used agreeabiy to the obsepatiau in page 21. Ahis employed in a variety of signi6cations : 1. It is the personal pronoun of the first person in the sin- Tgular number. 2. It is the characteristic of the pla- aals signifying persons. 3. It is used at the eud of sentences, pointing them ont to be questions. 4. It follows some active verbs. 6. It is an interjection. ~h is oftentimes connected with the prepositiens ko and ku :* as, ko mi; kill eh, unto my bonse ;" h t& kin 8, rr witbi my house." Besides these particles, there are singie letters made use of as embellishments : such are, a, t; s, k, I, n' and m. a, a, and Q iu genela1follow woda. beginning with &hem : aa, ayir a hu, '< the phce ;" itang Z trZ " the day," (tbe space of timt betwceb.the r&ag mad setting of the sun) ; ii krr, u bull, 4c dl at onus, tw gather." NOT E.-i; is used oftentimes to point out questioas, like ah : as, nko m? dere Z ? dost thou go with me?" m' & fe'h Z? " hast thou money 3" . k, A, ,and m are used as prepositions: see p. 46. d and I are used as adverbs : see pp 41 and 44 : besides this, ri is of various sigeilkatiops, as obsenect p. 3. The.particle gto, added to sentences without any signification, shews that the sentence* are couditionil : as, kereh mure pd tamyeo, ha u sbgbo dlr, at m+s cni; keh k tiifoll; " but whosoever is amquered, let him know that he shall not see me with his eyes :"-. wonme gho rinkt yeo tha ma kull ohma, " whosoever staggers, the same ddit :"-ii chang yeo lo peh gbo kh iiyillin, " paas by if thou art not drunk." Pail i h.c Ikhk &ng ate& yeo : iidyo konne lAii sotsh, ii/dl w trc kono ki; bmg yeo ; trim bul2ing ma hi! hnan I& F' woa rt; ko tukeh ; " the suu tbat passes over us ; the food which we receive ; the- reat which we eqjoy, at all tirrees tell us tbat there is a God in heaven." Having thus endeavoumd to find oat the principle* of the Bullom Laoguege, I would humbly request any eae who would take the trouble to peruse these few pages, to consider this to be the work of pne who by IW meaos would pretend even to be a teacher; but who, by much labw an4 .great diiEculties, endta- K tomred to scrape the gold out of the dust, but c~uld not avoid picking up much dust with it, which, for the present, must be left to tho= who ue able to re- fine it and to polish it.
