The Abertis Foundation, the Palafrugell town council, the Guttmann Institute and the Red Cross staged last Saturday the summer campaign to foster responsible driving among young people for the first time in the town.

Under these initiatives, monitors from the Guttmann Institute affected by spinal injuries sustained in traffic accidents and volunteers from the Red Cross approach young people enjoying a night out to raise awareness of the importance of behaving responsibly behind the wheel and highlight, drawing on their own experiences, the dangers and potential consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or with other distractions, and losing concentration.

In addition to speaking with young people, the monitors also distribute leaflets with practical advice on safe driving. Staging the initiative close to night clubs, in this instance the entrance to the Costa Este club in , increases the effectiveness of the message among young people and helps to increase awareness.

This year, the summer season began on the weekend of 15 and 16 June with initiatives in the city of Barcelona and the town of Mataró (Barcelona province). In September, "Te queda una Vida" will be staged in Peñíscola, Valencia and Alicante; and on the island of Ibiza.

The "Te queda una vida" youth programme was created in 2009 with the aim of promoting safe driving among young people aged between 18 and 30 outside night clubs. Following several years in Barcelona, the initiative has been taken to other Spanish cities and successfully transferred to other countries where the Abertis Group operates such as Brazil, Argentina and Chile.

The campaigns are part of the Abertis Foundation's wide-ranging Road Safety Programme which has been running since 2003 and includes supporting research, the organisation of scientific conferences, road safety education in schools and other awareness-raising campaigns.

In this way, the Group is seeking to achieve its goal of zero deaths from traffic accidents. Between 2015 and 2017, the number of fatalities on Abertis' network fell by 22% and the number of accidents by 9%.
