Vicenza 21-22- 23 June 2019 Press Release Lionsgates Con Vicenza Italy Friday 21 Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 June, Vicenza Trade Fair Grounds, Tickets sold online only Caution-www.lionsgates.online Info: [email protected] PRESS RELEASE Lionsgates Con 2019, the first edition of a convention that aims to bring to Vicenza some popular US actors starring in movies and TV series and much more. The first edition of Lionsgates Con will be held in Vicenza, 21-23 June 2019. This will be the first Italian version of the popular international Comic Conventions. Visitors will have the opportunity to interact with guests from acclaimed movie and TV series. The event will feature panel discussions, as well as autograph and photo sessions, giving entertainment enthusiasts the opportunity to meet some of their favorite stars, interact with them or hear them tell their stories and anecdotes. Lionsgates Con aims at providing its audience with great entertainment, bringing to Europe for the first time some actors from the most popular movies and TV series. Here is a partial list of guests who have already confirmed their attendance to the Vicenza Lionsgates: Ben McKenzie (commissioner Gordon in the acclaimed TV series Gotham) Mark Pellegrino (Lucifer in Supernatural), Manu Bennett (Crixus in Spartacus, and Deathstroke in Arrow), Natalie Alyn Lind (Silver in Gotham) , Ross Marquand (Aaron in The Walking Dead and Red Skull in film Avengers: Infinity War) Morena Baccarin (Firefly in Deadpool and now starring in Gotham) Chase Coleman (Vampires) Jon Bernthal (the iconic Frank Castle in The Punisher) According to Lionsgates organizers, the event might feature the participation of one of the leading actors of Avengers, as well as other acclaimed stars from the TV series. The Woman and the Gladiator on Television in the Twenty-First Century
NEW VOICES IN CLASSICAL RECEPTION STUDIES Conference Proceedings Volume Two REDIRECTING THE GAZE: THE WOMAN AND THE GLADIATOR ON TELEVISION IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY © Fiona Hobden, University of Liverpool and Amanda Potter, Open University INTRODUCTION Every woman loves a gladiator. This common knowledge underpins the first-century CE Roman poet Juvenal’s satirical portrait of Eppia, the runaway senator’s wife who abandoned her husband and family because she loved the ‘steel blade’, and whose life story should persuade Postumus away from the insanity of marriage, lest he find himself raising a gladiator’s son (Satire 6.80-113).1 And its broader truth is suggested in a boast made in graffiti at Pompeii that ‘Cresces the net-fighter is doctor to the night-time girls, the day-time girls, and all the others’ (CIL IV.4353).2 While there may be elements of fantasy in both proclamations, the satirist and seducer both trade on the allure of the gladiator to susceptible women. Sexual desire arises, moreover, in moments of viewing. Thus, for Ovid’s predatory lover, the games, where women ‘come to see and to themselves be seen’, offer a prime occasion to pursue an erotic advantage, as ‘Venus’s boy’ fights upon the forum sands (Ars Amatoria 1.97-9, 163-70). And it was the passing glimpse of a gladiator that led Faustina to conceive a passion that allegedly resulted in the birth of her gladiator-emperor son, Commodus (Historia Augusta, ‘Life of Marcus Aurelius’ 19.1-2). In the Roman imagination, visual encounters spark female desire; sexual encounters follow.
