The Iziko Slave Lodge presents a series of exhibitions, each challenging institutional narratives and bringing accounts of oppression to the fore. Aluta Continua! – an exhibition emphasising the role of Western Cape youth during the youth uprisings of 1976 – brings to light the 11 August 1976 killing of school children from Langa, Nyanga and , and the impact this had on global and local resistance politics. Unshackled History: the Wreck of the Slave Ship, São José, 1794 uses an interactive display to bring into memory the São José, all those on board, as well as the journey of the wreck – from its tragic end, to its discovery, and finally its place in the future study of slave shipwrecks. Under Cover of Darkness seeks to bring the position of women during the early colonial period to light – concentrating on the lives of women in the service of the Cape Colony, specifically Krotoa, Susanna van Bengal, and Zara van der Caab. Kemet: Life in Ancient Egypt takes visitors on an Augmented Reality experience, enabling them to discover more about life in Ancient Egypt. This exhibition is truly a first for the Iziko Slave Lodge!
