You may want to contact Elise Perram in the Office of Student Affairs ([email protected]) to learn about some options which may benefit you and your family. It is not advisable to be uninsured. If you remain uninsured, however, you should learn which clinics and are available at a sliding fee or no cost BEFORE you need them/get sick or injured. If you have NYSHIP: NYSHIP provides you with medical insurance (doctor’s office visits) through United Healthcare’s Empire Plan and insurance through Blue Cross/Blue Shield. To find a doctor or hospital, go to: http: www.empireplanproviders.com or call 1-877-769-7447. You may also wish to take advantage of the Empire Plan NurseLine where registered nurses are available 24/7 to answer health-related questions. Call 1-877-769-7447, press or say option 5.

Description: Centrally located downtown close to public transportation, the Mount Sinai Urgent Care Center is open every day of the year. Our hours are 9 am-5 pm on weekdays, and from 9 am-5 pm on weekends and holidays.

Description: The Ryan Center is a community health center with six locations in Manhattan. They provide medical, dental, gynecological, mental health, dental and optometry, among many other medical specializations. They also provide medical services for a sliding fee based on your income level for patients without health insurance. Laboratory work, general x-rays, and EKGs are included in the fee for each visit. Ryan Health offers a low-cost pharmacy plan for uninsured patients. They do not take United Health Care, so students with NYSHIP will be better served going to a provider that is within the UHC network.

Description: As their website states: “The NYCFC, New York's only comprehensive free healthcare clinic, believes that high-quality healthcare is the right of all individuals. We provide, at no cost to our patients, the full range of healthcare services that include specialty referrals, counseling, patient education, social services, and screening and registration for public health insurance.” Appointments are available ONLY on Saturday mornings between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. Description: This is a group of 19 clinics in Manhattan, and the Mid-Hudson Valley. They run free Saturday clinics, one at the NYU NYC Free Clinic (see above), one in the Bronx, and the Women’s Health Free Clinic (two Saturdays a month in Manhattan). See the website for details. Each clinic has a team of social workers who can help you get health insurance if you are uninsured. Additionally, if you are uninsured, the fee is "sliding scale" based on your income. **No one is turned away.

Callen-Lorde Community Health Center URL: http://callen-lorde.org/ Location: 356 West 18th Street (between 8th and 9th Avenues) (212) 271-7200 (option #1 for call center associate and/or screening nurse)

Description: A health center specializing in health issues for New York's LGBTQ population, yet accepting of all patients, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Callen-Lorde is a respectful environment, staffed with excellent physicians, gynecologists, social workers and even a dentist. If uninsured, you may qualify for sliding-scale payments. Sometimes, you can receive an urgent appointment within two days (*for established patients only); a Screening Nurse via phone can help determine if you need an urgent appointment (press option #1). On Saturdays, walk-ins for sexual health and urgent care* begin at 8:15AM and continue on a first-come, first-served basis until 3:15PM, however appointments are often filled before noon. Primary care appointments are not offered on a walk-in basis. Callen-Lorde does not accept United Health Care therefore students with NYSHIP may want to go elsewhere for health care. However, they can help you find an LGBTQ friendly provider in .

Wang Community Health Center has been a leader in providing high-quality, affordable, culturally competent health-care to the Asian American community in New York City. The healthcare team includes doctors, dentists, nurses, care managers, optometrists, social workers, health educators, nutritionists and medical assistants. The Health Centers are located in Chinatown, Manhattan and Flushing, Queens, and are open 7 days a week. The Centers have staff fluent in many languages, including Mandarin, Cantonese, Taishanese, Shanghainese, Fujianese, Vietnamese, and Korean.
