Welcome and Announcements

Prelude

Opening Hymn “Built on the Rock” LSB #645, sts. 1&3

Built on the Rock the Church shall stand Even when steeples are falling. Crumbled have spires in ev’ry land; Bells still are chiming and calling, Calling the young and old to rest, But above all the souls distressed, Longing for rest everlasting.

We are God’s house of living stones, Built for His own habitation. He through baptismal grace us owns Heirs of His wondrous salvation. Were we but two His name to tell, Yet He would deign with us to dwell With all His grace and His favor.

The Invocation

Pastor: In the Name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen.

The Confession & Absolution

Pastor: Here and now we acknowledge those times our eyes see only our own needs, and not the needs of those around us.

(a time of personal reflection and confession)

Pastor: Father, You know our sins before we confess them. You know even the things that remain hidden to us. In humility, and yet in confidence, we bring before You those things in which we have fallen short. People: Father, You have made us Your dear children through Christ, but often we feel we are just ordinary. We settle for a life that may not matter that much; or live with an unsustainable manic drive, grasping and grabbing for something that always feels just out of reach. We listen to the voice of the Enemy that says that we just don’t matter. Forgive us, Father. Enable us to see what You have done for us, and what Your purpose is for our lives. Fill us with Your grace, and inspire us to share it with those around us.

Pastor: Here is the Good News. God sent His Son into the world. In compassion and obedience, Jesus announced the Kingdom, and then demonstrated the Kingdom through His death and resurrection. He has restored us to who we were meant to be, and filled us with His Spirit, that we might now be filled with compassion and obedience for those still in need. In Jesus, the free gift of God, we have received eternal life. And our sins are forgiven. In the Name of the Father, and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Father, You have given freely. You have opened Your hand and poured out Your gifts in abundance. Fill us with the Spirit of Your Son, Jesus, that we who have received Your gifts, may overflow in gratitude and thanksgiving, and that, being sent by You, we might offer to those around us the grace You have so freely given us. May Your gifts flow through us to those around us, and may we be consumed with Your passion for those who do not know You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

The Scripture Readings

Old Testament Reading: Exodus 19:2-8

2 They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the 3 wilderness. There Israel encamped before the mountain, while Moses went up to God. The LORD called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.” 7 So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the LORD had 8 commanded him. All the people answered together and said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the LORD.

New Testament Reading: Romans 5:6-15

6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.

The Holy Gospel: Luke 9:10-17 (Words of our Lord printed in bold)

10 On their return the apostles told him all that they had done. And he took them and withdrew apart to a town called Bethsaida.11 When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he welcomed them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God and cured those who had need of healing. 12 Now the day began to wear away, and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away to go into the surrounding villages and countryside to find lodging and get provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.” 13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” 14 For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 And they did so, and had them all sit down. 16 And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces.

Sermon Hymn “The Gifts Christ Freely Gives” LSB #602, sts. 1,2&4

The gifts Christ freely gives He gives to you and me To be His Church, His bride, His chosen, saved and free! Saints blest with these rich gifts Are children who proclaim That they were won by Christ And cling to His strong name.

The gifts flow from the font Where He calls us His own; New life He gives that makes Us His and His alone. Here He forgives our sins With water and His Word; The triune God Himself Gives pow’r to call Him Lord.

The gifts are there each day The holy Word is read; God’s children listen, hear, Receive, and they are fed. Christ fills them with Himself, Blest words that give them life, Restoring and refreshing Them for this world’s strife.

Sermon SERMON SERIES: “BLESSED BROKEN GIVEN”

Week 1: “Your Life as Bread” Pastor Brian Truog Text: Luke 9:10-12 Sermon notes:

Our Profession of Faith: The Apostles' Creed

All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The response to the petition, “Lord in your mercy” is “Hear our prayer.” In this manner, worshipers signify agreement with the prayer. Copies of our prayer list can be found in the narthex between the mailboxes. Please take them home with you and pray about them this week.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Blessing

The Sending

Closing Hymn “Make Me a Blessing” CH #670, sts. 1&3

Out in the highways and byways of life, Many are weary and sad. Carry the sunshine where darkness is rife, Making the sorrowing glad.

Refrain: Make me a blessing; make me a blessing. Out of my life may Jesus shine. Make me a blessing, O Savior I pray. Make me a blessing to someone today.

Give as 'twas given to you in your need; Love as the Master loved you. Be to the helpless a helper indeed; Unto your mission be true. Refrain
