Spring 2017 LOVE Notes RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE OF DURHAM & WAKE KEEPING FAMILIES CLOSE GETTING BACK ON THE HORSE
The day began like any other show day for 17-year-old Gillian. After three first-place wins, she prepared for an important competition the next day.
During a warm-up session at the NC State Fairgrounds, her beloved horse, Sky, tripped. Before Gillian could react, she was thrown, and the faithful horse fell on her. Sky stood up quickly, but her long-time best friend did not move.
Although she wore a helmet, Gillian suffered a traumatic brain injuiry. The York, SC, teen was rushed to WakeMed where she lay in a coma for 10 days.
After awakening, Gillian scored only 2 on a cognitive scale that tops at 15. She had to relearn the basics: talking, eating and walking. Her progress was slow; she would not speak for five weeks.
Gillian’s parents and five siblings from South Carolina took turns at her bedside. Even while unconscious she could not be left alone because she pulled at the tubes keeping her body going.
Three hours from home, the family made RMH its temporary home in Raleigh during Gillian’s recovery.
“Without Ronald McDonald House at WakeMed, I don’t know how we would have done it,” her mother said. “The volunteers were so comforting – everyone was amazing. They made it so much more than a place to stay – it kept us going while the hospital helped Gillian.” (over)

Amanda Powell carried twin sons Luke and Roman with the hopes of every mother-to-be.
During her pregnancy, doctors diagnosed severe complications for both boys.
The twins were born 10 weeks early, weighing just over two pounds each. Baby Roman had three surgeries during his four-month Neonatal ICU stay. Thing were tougher for Baby Luke, who had seven surgeries and spent eight months in Duke’s NICU.
A first-time mother, Amanda stayed at RMH of Durham so she wouldn’t have to drive to and from her home in Fayetteville each day. During the second half of her stay, Roman made RMH his first home as his brother’s treatment continued.
This spring marks Luke’s one-year hospital discharge anniversary. Roman supports brother Luke during treatment.
BACK ON THE HORSE
In July 2016, Gillian left WakeMed for continued rehabilitation at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.
With lots of hard work, Gillians was able to return to SC three weeks later. Her first stop after leaving the hospital was the barn for a heart-felt reunion with Sky, whom she hadn’t seen since the accident.

RMH PROGRAMS PROMOTE FAMILY-CENTERED CARE • Keeping families close to their sick or injured children • Helping families spend more time with their children, interacting with clinical care teams and pariticpating in critical medical-care decisions • Enhancing children’s and parents’ hospital experience
In 2016, RMH opened four caregiver sleeping rooms inside Duke’s Pediatric Progressive Care Unit. Ronald McDonald Family Rooms offer respite and Managed in partnership with hospital staff, the resources inside the walls of the hospital. Parents and program offers overnight accomodations to local caregivers may use shower and laundry facilities, find parents and caregivers whose children are coffee and a hot meal or snack, catch up on work or seriously ill.
