FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chip Debit Cards Available at UW Credit Union

Madison, WI – January 13, 2016 – UW Credit Union will begin offering Visa® chip debit cards (also known as EMV cards) on January 13, 2016. Chip cards add another layer of security to card transactions that take place at card readers and ATMs. During the transaction, the chip produces a single use code to validate the transaction, making it nearly impossible for the card data to be stolen and duplicated.

“We’re committed to putting our members’ best interests first,” said David Mickelson, Vice President of Retail Operations at UW Credit Union. “By offering chip cards, our members have a higher level of security and global acceptance when they complete transactions.”

According to Aite Group, it is estimated that the chip card will reduce card-present fraud in the United States by 51 percent between 2015 and 2018. In Europe, for example, since implementation in 2004, card-present fraud has decreased by 69 percent, according to datacardedge.com.

“Protecting our members’ personal card information is a top priority for us,” said Rob Van Nevel, Senior Vice President & Chief Member Solutions Officer. “Chip cards give our members a more convenient, secure banking experience that lets them shop and travel with increased confidence.”

Over the next few months, all of UW Credit Union’s debit cardholders will receive new chip , and new cardholders will receive chip debit cards starting January 13. The credit union began offering chip credit cards in 2015.
