100 years of Ellington We've proclaimed 1999 as the Year of the Duke!

You already know this even if you listen just a little to GLT. We've been playing a lot of Duke Ellington's music and giving away CDs to celebrate the 100th birthday of America's foremost composer, arranger and bandleader. You've heard Ellington in small groups, Ellington with his famous orchestra and other artists performing Ellingtonia.

In fact, before our celebration, when we were just in the planning stages, it became apparent that we were already playing a lot of Ellington. His influence and reach as a composer of music that sounds contemporary today is inescapable. If you'd like to learn more about the life and music of Duke Ellington, see page 11 for some recommended Ellington Web sites. You can also go to our web site to find out all the details of our Ellington celebration: www.ilstu.edu/depts/wglt.

As we get closer to the April 29th birthday of Edward Kennedy Ellington you'll have a chance to receive a special thank you gift during our spring membership drive. You'll hear even more rarities from the GLT archives and special programming from National Public Radio and Public Radio International.
