Dec. 4, 2000 The allnew Sonata headlines the lineup of vehicles from Hyundai for January’s auto show.

With the Sonata, Hyundai has created a completely new vehicle – a worldclass family sedan with a new body, two new engines, three new transmissions, a new doublewishbone suspension and highly advanced safety technology, including standard side air bags and a passenger presence detection system.

Hyundai has also made big changes to the 1999 Elantra sedan and wagon, which feature a fresh, new look and a powerful new engine. Rounding out Hyundai’s product line for 1999 are the sleek, exciting Tiburon sporty coupe and the Accent, which offers sophistication, comfort and technology not normally found in the subcompact class.

Every new Hyundai is loaded with standard features and outstanding value. For 1999, however, Hyundai has added an important competitive advantage – a buyer assurance program that’s unmatched in the automotive industry. Called The Hyundai Advantage, this package reflects Hyundai’s confidence in the quality of its products.

The Hyundai Advantage provides bumpertobumper coverage for five years or 60,000 miles. This exceeds the coverage on competitive cars costing much more. In addition, Hyundai provides original owners with industryleading powertrain coverage – 10 years or 100,000 miles. Even if the car is sold, Hyundai backs the powertrain for five years or 60,000 miles.

That’s not all. Buyers who purchase any 1999 Hyundai also receive 24hour roadside assistance coverage at no extra charge for five full years (no mileage limit); it includes emergency towing even if the car is involved in an accident, lockout service and limited coverage for tripinterruption expenses, unlike many other programs.

There is no deductible on any of these coverages.

The new Sonata: Side air bags and more With the 1999 Sonata, Hyundai has created a worldclass family vehicle that can compete in every way with the midsized class leaders – with or without consideration of price. The Sonata is offered in standard and GLS trim levels. True to its Hyundai heritage, each Sonata offers an impressive array of features at a price well below that of many competitors.

Consumers who visit the auto show are unlikely to find any car in Sonata’s price class that can match its comprehensive array of active and passive safety systems. Sonata is one of the first cars in its class to offer side air bags as standard equipment. In addition, Sonata offers frontseat passenger detection for passengerside front and side air bags, as well as front seat belt pretensioners, a threepoint seat belt for the middle rear seat and adjustable rear headrests.

Along with classleading safety features, Sonata offers stateoftheart engineering, resulting in a solid, exceptionally quiet sedan that’s also fun to drive.

Sonata’s two new engines represent a major technological advancement for Hyundai.

The standard engine on the base Sonata is a 2.4liter, DOHC fourcylinder engine that’s one of the largest, most powerful four cylinder engines in Sonata’s class. Strong, smooth and refined, it develops 149 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 156 ft./lbs. of torque at 3,000 rpm.

The Sonata GLS features the allnew HyundaiDeltaV6 engine – the third engine completely designed and engineered by Hyundai. It’s an allaluminum 2.5liter, DOHC powerplant developing 170 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 166 ft./lbs. of torque at 4,000 rpm. The Delta V6 incorporates many technological advancements that make it an exceptionally smooth, refined engine.

Also smooth and refined is the allnew, electronically controlled fourspeed automatic that buyers can pair with the Delta V6 engine. In addition to lockup torque converter and driverselected overdrive, this new transmission features “fuzzy logic” technology that enables the transmission to adapt to its owner’s driving style. Also available with the V6 engine is a new, smooth shifting fivespeed .

The Sonata also features a highly sophisticated suspension consisting of a doublewishbone setup in front and a fivelink system in the rear. This suspension was engineered to provide an optimal balance of luxury carlike ride comfort with sports carlike handling.

Value leaders The is the compact sedan and wagon offering buyers more standard features than their competitors. With a new look in front and rear, and with a new 140horsepower engine, Elantra sedan and wagon have strengthened their position as the value leaders in the compact class. Elantra’s value position has been further strengthened with the inclusion of air conditioning as standard equipment, at no extra cost when compared with last year’s price.

Elantra’s new engine is the same 2.0liter, DOHC 16valve engine used in Hyundai’s Tiburon sporty coupe. This gives Elantra the most powerful standard engine in its class. Elantra’s ride, handling and interior space are at the top of the class, too.

Filling out Hyundai’s auto show display are the sporty Tiburon coupe and the Accent subcompact sedan and .

With its headturning styling, Tiburon appeals to consumers who want a car that not only looks great, but also one that they look good in. In addition to good looks, Tiburon offers great performance, lots of hightech gadgetry and a long list of standard features – all at a surprisingly affordable price.

Affordability is also a major attribute of the Hyundai Accent, but it’s far from the only one. Despite being one of the lowestpriced cars in America, Accent offers a long list of standard features that make it roomier, more comfortable, more refined and more fun to drive than any subcompact competitor – and many cars costing much more.
