SOCIAL ACTION

We had a terrific open house dessert at Shelleys. Over 35 past, current and prospective members of the social action committee attended! Since that meeting several other people have called to say they couldnt make the open house, but they are interested. They are welcome and you are too! Our meetings are the third Thursday of every month at 7:30 pm in the temple library. Prospective members of the committee were sent a summary of all the activities that the committee undertakes, and these summaries will be available at the meetings for new members.

Sukkat Shalom, the shelter that the temple supports, still needs someone with a truck who can be available to transport furniture.

This is the fiftieth anniversary of the Danish rescue. The Danish Lutheran Church and King Christian were crucial in saving the Jews from Auschwitz and helping them escape to Sweden. The Commission of Social Action of Reform Judaism is asking children to write thank you notes to Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.

This month marks our Ohel Yaacov drive. You have been most generous in past years. Please read the information about Ohel Yaacov and contribute!

OHEL YAACOV FUND

Among the projects Ohel Yaacov helps sustain are: Sukkat Shalom, A Peaceful Shelter -- TRS provides rent and furnishings for a three bedroom apartment in Falls Church. The apartment is used as transitional housing by one family at a timer and serves as a stepping stone between a homeless shelter and independent living. We have already helped two families regroup, obtain job skills for the care-giver and school and recreation for the children, putting them on the path to self-sustaining permanent housing. Families are selected by Homestretch, a Falls Church social services agency. Homeless shelters In Falls Church, Baileys Crossroads and Reston -- Temple funds have helped these shelters serve families and adult men and women, providing temporary housing, clothing and personal supplies, as well as intensive counseling and skill-building. Carl Checknoff was devoted to all kinds of Jewish music, and this fund is a living memorial to that devotion. This concert will be the eighth in what we hope will be a continuing series. We have had traditional cantorial music, American show music with its roots in Jewish tradition, folk music, a klezmer fralach, an historical program of Reform music and more. What is now traditional was once innovative and unfamiliar. It is our goal to bring all kinds of new and old Jewish music for the enjoyment of everyone in our congregation.
