FROM THE DIOCESE

Looking forward to Advent and Christmas

The Church of has announced that, following very positive feedback and also extensive engagement at a local level, #FollowTheStar will again provide the theme for its Christmas ‘campaign’ in 2019 and 2020.

In making this announcement, the has produced a helpful checklist of things that churches might do to prepare for Advent and Christmas this year. One of the key messages being shared is the value of the free listings that are provided for each church via A Church Near You (see www.achurchnearyou.com). As the Church of England states, ‘A Church Near You receives more than 12 million page-views each year, and 81 per cent of people who visit the site are first-time visitors’, meaning that there is a great opportunity to use the site so as to encourage local church attendance. The Church of England reports that there are now more than 16,300 church editors on A Church Near You, and all across the country are being encouraged to ensure that their listings are up to date and include details of Christmas services. (Further information is available at www.achurcnhearyou.com or by contacting the diocesan Communications team on 01522 50 40 37/01522 50 40 64.)

A further element of #FollowTheStar this year will include a #FollowTheStar: Twelve Days of Christmas booklet (available to buy in packs of 10). Written by the Revd Mina Munns, the booklet’s content is designed for use from Christmas Day onwards and will offer readers an opportunity to ‘experience the wonder and excitement of the Wise Men’s journey as they travel towards Jesus’.

An accompanying leaflet and app are also available. Churches might wish to use the leaflet to encourage people to engage with daily Christian reflections over the Christmas period. It contains a short challenge for each day, plus QR codes linking to the reflections on the #FollowTheStar app. (The reflections will also be available as daily emails, and there will be family craft activities linked to each day’s theme.)

The Church of England has partnered with CPO on a range of stationery and publicity resources that can be bought online from www.churchprinthub.org (search for Follow The Star), and free digital resources are online at www.churchofengland.org/christmas

In addition, this year there will be a brand-new video tool that will allow churches to produce customisable videos to share at church and on their social media, with the aim of encouraging people to attend local services 3 and events, plus there will be a range of new video adverts for use throughout December.

Finally, if churches are able to display a star on their building, they are invited to ‘tag’ this on A Church Near You and share a photo of it on social media using #FollowTheStar.

At a diocesan level, the Communications Team would be very pleased to hear of how churches might be planning to share in this year’s #FollowTheStar ‘campaign’. Our telephone numbers are above, or you might wish to email us at [email protected]

Prayer for the Life of the World Blessed are those who hunger for the earth’s oneness for they will be satisfied. Matthew 5:6

Whichever way we turn, O God, there is your face in the light of the moon and patterns of the stars in scarred mountain rifts and ancient groves in mighty seas and creatures of the deep. Whichever way we turn, O God, there is your face in the light of the eyes we love in the salt of the tears we have tasted in weathered countenances east and west in the soft skin glow of the child everywhere. Whichever way we turn, O God, there is your face there is your face among us. Amen

Anthem for Doomed Youth What passing-bells for these who die as cattle? — Only the monstrous anger of the guns. Only the stuttering rifles’ rapid rattle Can patter out their hasty orisons. No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells; Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,— The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells; And bugles calling for them from sad shires. What candles may be held to speed them all? Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes Shall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes. The pallor of girls’ brows shall be their pall; Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds, And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds. Wilfred Owen (1893–1918)

Links to Zanzibar

St Andrews , , as some may already know, have a connection with this country which is over 4,000 miles from Uk. The Rev Edward Steer who was in charge of St Andrews in the mid 1800s left this country to do missionary work in Africa. Along side many other achievements he became the 3rd Bishop of UMCA 1874- 1882 and built Zanzibar Christ Church Cathedral.

Mark and Clair Smith, who live in Little Steeping, arranged a short holiday to Zanzibar in September. They were happy to take with them a beautifully framed picture of the church, with a montage of images old and new on the reverse, accompanied with a letter from the PCC. Many thanks to Mark and Clair. Also many thanks to Trevor Jackson for providing the images and wonderful framing. The image shows our gift been handed to Cannon Stanley Lichinga on the right and Lay Cannon James Kaleza on the left.

Hundleby Outreach Project

On 7th September we celebrated Harvest in the Parish Room. Activities included using dough, making corn dollies, and model scarecrows from pegs. Mr Maddison who keeps bees, brought beeswax which Jean Coates grated and was then ironed on to a cotton square to make an alternative and reusable wrapping for sandwiches. He also talked about his bees, shared honey and honeycomb with us and showed parts of a hive. Violet Thompson manned the kitchen and kept us supplied with tea and squash. The children picnicked on sandwiches, biscuits, sausage rolls, tomatoes etc. inside on blankets with the door open as it was too windy outside to use the churchyard. The adults sat at tables! Thank you to everyone who helped to make it such an interesting and enjoyable afternoon.

Upcoming events: Sat. 7th Dec. Follow the Star: Preparing for Christmas 2-4.30pm. Activities in the Church and Parish Room. All welcome. We are very grateful for the upgraded Children’s Corner in Church.

Ride and Stride

Our thanks to everyone who sponsored Martha and Elizabeth. We enjoyed our bike ride in the sunshine and biked further than usual, though still managed to visit Mrs Pape at Toynton. We raised over £220! Martha was proud to have cycled up Bolingbroke hill without stopping!

St Andrew’s Church, Halton Holegate secures National Lottery support

St Andrew’s parish church, Halton Holegate Lincolnshire, has received a grant of £153,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for an exciting heritage project, repairs and heritage community projects. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project focuses on repairs to the roofs of the building and community projects researching aspects of church history, resulting in interpretative media. A start date of March 2020 is eagerly awaited.

Supported through The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project will allow volunteers to access training, educational courses and workshops, and learning new skills along the way. Working as part of a team they will research, document and record many aspects of the historic church building, both architecturally, and also it’s human side. Oral histories from people in the parish will be documented, the names of soldiers on the war memorial will be ‘brought to life’, with their own personal stories and memories of relatives still living in the parish. In conjunction with local schoolchildren they will compile a ‘Young person’s guide to the church’.

A village scrap book, documenting events over the past 100+ years, has become very fragile, so in order to preserve this historical record it will be photographed and digitally preserved. The results of this research will be recorded onto permanent interpretive boards in church, a new guidebook will be published, and a dedicated church website will be created, enabling all the research to be available online.

In addition, the visible profile and access to the church will be improved through new road signage, lighting and a noticeboard. Built in the late 1300’s this medieval church building has served this small rural community for centuries and continues to be there for worship, quiet reflection and enjoyment.

Speaking on behalf of The Parochial Church Council, Christine King, Churchwarden, said “We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to National Lottery players, and are confident the project will not only help us to preserve the fabric of this historic building for many years 9 to come, but will provide opportunities for people to learn new skills, work as part of a team, and through the various interpretive media, enable visitors to better understand and appreciate our history, the life of our church, and our passion for its continued presence.”

Have you visited the Olive Tree lately?

If, like us, your experience of a visit to the Olive Tree has been a quick dash in and out to collect altar candles, that special ‘Christian messaged/themed’ card you know you’ll never find in the shops in town, or – and yes it’s that time of year – another set of advent candles, then can we recommend that you allow a little more time for your visit to browse around this veritable Aladdin’s cave.

You are assured of a warm welcome by Peter, Linda and Ann, especially during the colder months when the wood burner will be glowing away for your warmth and comfort.

The Olive Tree is not just about candles, cards and crosses. A craft area can supply you with , embroidery thread, needlepoint/tapestry kits, canvas bags and more.

If books are your ‘thing’ then their wonderful selection, for all ages, could occupy you for quite some time. An array of Christmas gifts, cards, decorations, nativity sets, jewellery, notepads, pens, mugs are available with prices to suit many budgets.

Who would have thought that the Olive Tree would sell dolls house furniture?…..yes they do, and so much more.

As we said, this tardis-like building has so much to offer. You can enjoy a cup of warming tea, coffee, hot chocolate, or a refreshing cold drink and freshly baked cakes, whilst you take the time to 11 sit and contemplate. (Unfortunately, time ran out for us today, but we will be back!)

Having said all of this, if none of the above is of interest to you, then the countryside views from the Olive Tree are well worth the trip.

Common Ground

Our churchyards, the ground upon which our churches are built, is truly common ground. Set aside for all for ever. Very often they can be the only plots of earth open to all that are not regularly doused in chemicals or ploughed up each year. They become a place of retreat from habitat loss for wildflowers, insects, butterflies, bees, birds, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, mosses. lichens… In short they are home to many of God’s wonderful creatures. Those very same creatures that scripture tells us pleased Him to make.

Our church buildings and all they contain are man-made and imposed by us on the landscape. Those shelters that were orginally built simply to keep the rain off the altar during the Eucharist now threaten to crush the very life out of the worshipping communities they were build to serve. Time to step outside.

Look at the sky, the trees, the grass and know that all this is Gods. In this Deanery we are blessed with so many beautiful churchyards – each different, rich and special. Each full of God’s beauty and riches. Research has shown that spending time with nature helps those who are sick in mind, body or spirit. We have these gifts to offer our communities. We know how much nature inspires us, in our dreams, in our creativity, in our worship. We have these gifts to offer our communities.

Unable to unlock your church? Look to the churchyard – open to all and bursting with the glory of God. All those living creatures created by love and given in love to us. Time to respond with love.

Without huge complications, without vast sums of money we can show forth the beauty of God, the power of our faith and the love, generosity and joy of our to all who pause to touch on the natural wonders of our churchyards.

Would you be interested in finding out how? From the very easy and simple thing to perhaps a bigger project? The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trusts leading expert on churchyards, Mr Mark Schofield, and from the Gods Acre Project, Ms Helen Gamble, have both said that they would love to come to the Bolingbroke Deanery to meet, talk and share their considerable knowledge and experience with us.

It’s up to you. If you would like to meet them please contact Jane in the Deanery Office, 01790 752526, and dates can be sorted, tea brewed and cakes cut.

We have in our care something priceless. Paul D 13

Lincolnshire Community Healthcare Chaplaincy

The opening lines from the ‘Primary Care Chaplaincy Service – Chaplaincy Caring for you’ leaflet are as follows:

“In times of poor health or other crises within our lives, we often need more than just a prescription for tablets from our doctor. We sometimes need help in finding the inner strength to cope with our difficulties, to rediscover a sense of hope, meaning or purpose, to ease the emotional pain of suffering, and to know that we have someone to talk to and with whom we can share our burden.”

As one of two volunteer chaplains based at Spilsby Surgery I hope that is what we are doing in our being a Christ-like presence. We aim to be a compassionate refuge where people can come to unburden themselves of whatever it is that is causing them concern, anxiety and fear. Chaplains aren’t evangelists, proselytisers, therapists or counsellors; simply empathic listeners who offer people a safe space and chance to talk and be listened to.

This service is available for people of any faith, and also those without a faith. Volunteer chaplains work within healthcare in a non- denominational manner and are happy to assist anyone with problems or difficulties, whether they are of a spiritual nature or not. Many people just need someone who will listen to them without judgement or offering advice.

If anyone would like further information and/or make an appointment with one of the Volunteer Chaplains, please contact Spilsby Surgery. K O’Flynn

St James Coffee Mornings

Many thanks to all the people who helped and supported the Saturday coffee mornings. The Treasurer tells us that £1479.98 was raised up to September 27th. This is an excellent result and the money goes to the general expenses of the Church. It costs £95.61 per day to keep the Church open so this money has covered about 16 days of opening. It has been more difficult this year to get people to serve in the kitchen as we opened for 24 weeks. We are considering opening for June, July and August next year as it will be a more manageable commitment. But watch this space. People are welcome to meet in All Wrapped up during the Winter from 10.00 onwards. The proprietor makes us very welcome. Thank you again for all your support.

FAMILY SERVICE

The Family service on October 6th was a celebration of Harvest. The children were given a check sheet as they entered Church and were asked to put a tick in the correct column each time a fruit, vegetable, drink or country was mentioned during the service.

Readings taken from Deuteronomy, Corinithians and St Matthew were read by Sue Heggs, John Hobson and Reverend Joan Thornett who led the worship. Prayers were read by Jane Parker. A poem about an apple was recited by Peter and received a spontaneous round of applause.

Ethan was crucifor on his own for the first time and the children presented Harvest gifts to Reverend Joan at the altar. Jane and Margaret talked about food and drink that the congregation had eaten and drunk before the service and how lucky we are to live in the County of Lincolnshire which grows much of the UK's cabbages, wheat and salad stuff.

In her Harvest reflection Reverend Joan told a story explaining the message of who we are and a harvest of caring, looking after things and creating a harvest in ourselves.

At 12.00 a beautiful Harvest lunch was served to 41 people prepared by Jane, Janet and William followed by pudding, tea and coffee served up by the Ladies. Thank you for all your hard work and to everyone who helped in any way and supported the service. The Harvest gifts will be taken to the Community larder at New Life Church. The next Family service is on November 3rd when the theme will be Reflections.

Thank you to everyone who sponsored Marion and Jane for the Ride and Stride. We managed to raise £144 of which will be split between Lincolnshire Churches Trust and St James. Due to other commitments we had to do it on separate days and only walked from St James’ to St Mary’s at Hundleby (a token effort for this year). Jane walked the scenic route on the Friday with Alfie the dog who was most disgruntled at getting stuck in one of the stiles and was very pleased to see Jenny at Hundleby church at the end of it. Marion walked it on the Saturday and was certainly a lot quicker but just as pleased to see Jenny. 16

EMA

Written for my granddaughter Ema when aged eleven years.

'The Pen is mightier than the sword', how strange Bulwer-Lytton's words, but strange they are really not at all, well, perhaps, to a little girl.

Ema, your words may prove to be the very craft by which you may live, for almost since the time you began to speak you have amazed all with your gift. Ema, dearest child, you have been Blessed, Blessed with the wonder of words, with your pen commanding beauty, ever picturesque, a true artist, for your canvas is your verse. Learn your language, use it well as you make your way through life, for 'tis the language of kings, my little girl and you have the language of light. With pen in hand to lead the way many hearts you shall uplift, of your love of words be not afraid, share your love, Ema, give. Conjure from words great characters, bring them to life...and then, bear us along on your magic, girl, as we drift in the flow of your pen.

Grandchild of mine, you have a rare and wondrous art, though, as yet, too young to understand, for the power of the poet bides within your heart and the might of the pen rests in your hand.

Yours shall be the undefined duty, born of the heart and the mind, to share your perception of beauty bestowed upon few of our kind. A duty to portray the loveliness of words as you journey through life, a duty to follow great footsteps... little girl... a duty to write.

More Newhome thoughts on Computers

Well by the time you read this Christmas will not be far away. Sorry, I know I am mentioning it, but I have been learning the music for this year’s Christmas concerts. It is inescapable! Not really the point here. What I was going to talk about is the withdrawal of support for those of you with a Windows phone. As off the 10th of December 2019, Microsoft are stopping any further support for Windows based phones. This is the same as they have done for Xp, Vista and in January, Windows 7. “Microsoft is recommending that its current Windows 10 Mobile customers move to an Android or iOS device instead.” So if you have a Windows phone then that might be what you want this year; a new phone.

Now when it comes to replacing your phone there are many people out there that want the latest thing. This means that they trade-in or sell on their old phone. So we now have a small version of the car market, but with phones; you can get good second-hand phones that you own, so you only have to pay for SIM only. Not quite Pay as You Go but cheaper than a normal contract where you are buying a phone as well as calls and data.

Personally I use the GiffGaff service which piggy backs on the O2 and starts at £6/month for a SIM. They also sell second-hand phones through their website. However it will depend on where you live and what coverage you have as to which networks SIM you would buy. Once that has been decided think about what sort of user you are or would like to be. There is no point in paying for services that you hardly use. Look for a service that you can change very easily partway through the month. Life can change quickly sometimes. Like every thing do your research and ask yourself why do I need these functions or does it just make it too complicated for me. After all you are going to be the one using it on your own once the 'expert' has gone home.

If you go down the route of a second-hand phone please make sure you get an unlocked phone or one that is on the network you wish to use. Many contract phones are locked to the original network provider. This can often be unlocked, though it is not something many people want to do. There are many outlets where you can pay to get the phone unlocked. This will help if you choose to change service at any time or you can pick up an ex family phone but it is not on the network you need to use. Otherwise just remember the phone is just another computer. So plenty of storage, RAM and a reasonable CPU is required if you don't want to be the last one to find the web page that you want. 21

ERESBY NEWS

Well done to the residents who gained first place in the Victoria sponge section at Harvest festival and second place in the floral arrangement section. Four residents attended the festival with helpers. Lesley, activities co-ordinator, is very proud of the residents. Many thanks to Cinny Cuppleditch for all the preparation she did before the event.

The Aviation Centre at offered to take some residents on to the Lancaster Bomber aeroplane but unfortunately, due to strict Health and Safety regulations, only one resident was able to do this. Peter Horry had his ride on Tuesday, October 8th. He said he was over the moon and it was a dream come true. He felt very privileged to have been given the opportunity and wished to thank the people who raised the money and Lesley and Eresby Hall for organising the event. An experience he will always remember.

The main event for fundraising is the Annual Bingo in the Franklin Hall. This will take place on November 21st so please put that date in your diary and support the Hall if you can. Thank you.

Celebrating Christmas

Should the world be influencing The Church or the reverse? Is The Church subject to creeping secularisation? One example is Halloween with the emphasis on trick and treat, witches etc. and there is no Christian dimension. This year the Catholic Church in Spilsby will hold a Vigil Mass on All Hallows (Saints) Eve, and on All Souls Day, November 2nd, Mass will be at 11am, followed by the blessing of graves in the local cemetery. Then the Church will remain open until 3pm for anyone to come and remember/pray, light a candle for their deceased relatives and friends. Everyone will be very welcome, of any denomination or non.

The greatest challenge is self-imposed, like the erosion of Advent. Many parishes have Christmas meals and Carol Services well before Christmas. We celebrate Christmas in Advent when we are supposed to be preparing for the Incarnation. Would we contemplate an Easter Service in Lent? A few suggestions:- 1. Learning from Europeans, we could focus on the feast of St Nicholas (Santa Claus) on December 6th, or give more importance to

24

Epiphany, the Coming of the Magi – some countries divide the giving of presents to the children between Christmas and Epiphany. 2. Have a real celebration of Epiphany – a reminder of the twelve days of Christmas. 3. Have a joint, ecumenical Carol Service and/or Crib Service after Christmas – a service not a concert.

Every year we hear Christmas bewail the commercialisation of Jesus’ birth, but we do little about it. Already I can hear people saying “No one will come to a Carol Service after Christmas Day” – yet unless we give it a try, we will never know. Jesus said “Where two or three are gathered in my name…” a small quorum! So let us try to proclaim The Incarnation of the Son of God better. It is the least we should do. Patrick Doyle.

I sometimes think of days gone by when in green meadows I would lie, and see the clouds go flying high and hear the buzzards distant cry

Above the Beech trees all a glaze in the soft autumnal haze and in the fields the cattle graze oblivious of the worldly craze.

I think these hours of sweet content were really truly Heaven sent to ease the mind, calm and restore from all the horrors of the war. Joan F

“Are you sitting comfortable? Then I will begin.” Last year I wrote my first children’s book ‘Barty and Darcy.’ It was published as an e- book in January of this year. Reviewers from the likes of Amazon, Apple Books, NetGalley and Goodreads have described the book as “cute’ – ‘A lovely story.’ – ‘A book which I read with excitement.’ (this was from a mother reading it to her 3years old daughter.) These reviews which can be substantiated by the above organisations, are from customers all over the world, especially the UK and the USA. Many of the reviewers are and librarians who have recommended it highly for reading.

Aimed at the age range 6 to 10 years old, it is being read to children much younger, some as low as 3 years old. It is also being read by adults. The story is “cute” but it also has a meaning. The cost is only £1.99 and can be read on an iPad, a Laptop, a Tablet, or an iPhone. Visit, Kindle, Books, Goodreads or Troubador Publishing and buy at the low price. Let the young ones read it or read it to them. Believe me, they will love it! Thanks for reading this. Mo Bird – email [email protected] you can contact me on Facebook at Maurice Bird, (Lincoln, Lincolnshire.)
