Photo by: Daniel Fiore/SEARCH, Inc. via AP MOBILE, Alabama — Dives into murky water, painstaking examinations of relics and technical data and rigorous peer review led historians and archaeologists to confirm last week that wreckage found in the Mobile River in 2018 was indeed the Clotilda, the last known ship to bring enslaved Africans to the United States. An event heralding the discovery on May 30 in the Mobile community of Africatown made clear that much work remains. The Alabama Historical Commission and others working on the project must decide how much can be salvaged, whether it can be brought ashore or if it should be left in place and protected. Perhaps more important: How can the interest and publicity engendered by the discovery of the Clotilda be harnessed to foster economic and racial justice in the community? Anderson Flen, a descendant of one of the Clotilda's enslaved, believes the historic find can spark new discussions on those topics. The Battle of New Orleans (January 8, 1815) The Battle of New Orleans occurred on January 8, 1815, which, interestingly, was after American and British negotiators signed the Treaty of Ghent (Belgium) but before word of the treaty’s signing reached North America. Given the American victory, most Americans concluded the British agreed to the treaty because of the battle’s outcome and hence most Americans believed the United States had won the war, which was not the case. Great Britain had long considered an attack on the American gulf coast. Early efforts had failed. By the time British forces first arrived along Florida’s Gulf Coast, then still part of the Spanish empire, Major General Andrew Jackson had defeated hostile Creek Indians near Horseshoe Bend and forced Creek leaders to sign the Treaty of Fort Jackson, ending British hopes of Native American help in the forthcoming campaign. Still, in August 1814 British forces landed at Pensacola in Spanish Florida to use it as a staging base for attacks on Mobile, Alabama, or New Orleans and the Mississippi River. Jackson’s subsequent attack on Pensacola, and the British destruction of the town’s fortifications before retreating, left the base useless to the British and the Americans. In fall 1814, it seemed Britain’s two-decade long war with France had ended with the exile of Napoleon Bonaparte to the island of Elba off the northeast coast of Italy. The British were able to transfer more warships and battle-tested troops to expand their control of the American coastline and to invade New Orleans, an important port for goods and agricultural bounty coming down the Mississippi River and full of valuable cotton and sugar. -

[1] Wind- and current-induced island wakes were investigated using a multiplatform approach of in situ, remote sensing, and numerical model simulations for the Southern California Bight (SCB). Island wind wakes are a result of sheltering from the wind, with weak wind mixing, strong heat storage, and consequent high sea surface temperature (SST). Wind wakes around Santa Catalina Island are most persistent during spring and summer months. Current wakes, caused by the disruption of the poleward traveling California Countercurrent, induce eddies to form off the north end of Catalina Island, and these move poleward every 9–12 days. Current wake eddies induce strong mixing, with low SST and high-density sea surface signatures, whereas wind wakes induce high sea surface temperature signatures associated with the formation of a well-defined shallow thermocline. Current wake eddies vary from 1 to 30 km in diameter. From numerical solutions we predicted the frequency of occurrence of current-induced wakes off Santa Catalina Island. Wind wakes were also observed off all the other islands of the SCB as seen from the analysis of synthetic aperture radar data. Time series analysis of the island mass effect phenomenon has shown a concurrence of low SST and high sea surface chlorophyll for Santa Catalina, San Nicholas, and San Clemente islands that might be related to the seasonality of the California Current and California Countercurrent. -

Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, Mayor Sandy Stimpson, and City Council President Levon Manzie have announced plans to construct a new, permanent facility, tentatively called the “Africatown Heritage House,” that will house the exhibition. The Africatown Heritage House will be located on property owned by the City of Mobile, adjacent to the Robert Hope Community Center and Mobile County Training School. The facility, jointly funded by Mobile County Commission and the City of Mobile, is expected to be a 5,000 square foot building. The facility will be a permanent fixture in the Africatown community, and, in years and decades to come, will be functional for a variety of purposes. The facility is expected to be complete in late summer 2020. In addition to telling the story of the last slave ship, Clotilda: The Exhibition will include over a dozen Clotilda artifacts, recovered from the shipwreck in the Mobile River and on loan from the Alabama Historical Commission, the State Historic Preservation Office. Drawing on the archaeological reports released by the Alabama Historical Commission, Clotilda: The Exhibition tells the stories of the Clotilda and Africatown in the context of slavery and maritime shipping along the Gulf Coast. -
