Christian Brothers Baseball History 1930 - 1959 By James McNamara, Class of 1947 Joseph McNamara, Class of 1983 1 Introductory Note This is an attempt to chronicle the rich and colorful history of baseball played at Christian Brothers High School from the years 1930 to 1959. Much of the pertinent information for such an endeavor exists only in yearbooks or in scrapbooks from long ago. Baseball is a spring sport, and often yearbooks were published before the season’s completion. There are even years where yearbooks where not produced at all, as is the case for the years 1930 to 1947. Prep sports enjoyed widespread coverage in the local papers, especially during the hard years of the Great Depression and World War II. With the aid of old microfilm machines at the City Library, it was possible to resurrect some of those memorable games as told in the pages of the Sacramento Bee and Union newspapers. But perhaps the best mode of research, certainly the most enter- taining, is the actual testimony of the ballplayers themselves. Their recall of events from 50 plus years ago, even down to the most minor of details is simply astonishing. Special thanks to Kathleen Davis, Terri Barbeau, Joe Franzoia, Gil Urbano, Vince Pisani, Billy Rico, Joe Sheehan, and Frank McNamara for opening up their scrapbooks and sharing photographs. This document is by no means a complete or finished account. It is indeed a living document that requires additions, subtractions, and corrections to the ongoing narrative. Respectfully submitted, James McNamara, Class of 1947 Joseph McNamara, Class of 1983 2 1930 s the 1920’s came to a close, The Gaels of Christian Brothers High School A had built a fine tradition of baseball excellence unmatched in the Sacra- mento area.

Will DIRECTOR’S CORNER Rob Younger, OACA Executive Director We have had a great start to the 2015-16 school year and fall sports. This school year, the OACA is celebrating its 81st year of serving high school coaches in our state. Membership has kept us busy this fall and at the December OSAA Executive Board meeting we will be presenting them with a check for $42,000. $15 per OACA Gold Card is reimbursed to the OSAA for admission into all OSAA sponsored events. Since the 1999-2000 school year when the Gold Card partnership was established between the OACA and the OSAA, over $670,000 has been given to the OSAA. The Gold Card is definitely a win/win for our membership and the OSAA. One of the perks of my job & one I greatly enjoy is to be able to make different presentations throughout our state. This fall I have had the opportunity to address different coaching staffs, parent groups and official’s associations.

Mesa County Valley School District 51 Recognition: Kindness is Contagious Campaign Board of Education Resolution: 17/18: 59 Presented February 20, 2018 The Board would like to invite the Kindness is Contagious group to come to the front of the room. Earlier this month, several District 51 high school students worked together to launch the Kindness is Contagious Campaign. The campaign aimed to help the Grand Valley community focus on positivity and kindness, while also increasing awareness about mental health. Students from each high school formed a lead committee to plan a variety of school and community events throughout the week. The campaign was entirely student led and included a day where student councils went to neighboring schools to pass out donuts, a compliment tree, and a day to wear green for mental health awareness. They also coordinated with local coffee shops to invite the community to buy a “suspended coffee” which would be given to someone who needed a pick-me-up and an event where the community was invited to come write down goals or encouragement on “Bucket List Boards” downtown. The students also coordinated to have Austin Eubanks, an international speaker and Columbine shooting survivor, come to Grand Junction to tell his story. The students also spearheaded the promotional campaign, which included flyers, stickers, videos, social media posts, and more. The Board of Education and Superintendent Haptonstall would like to recognize these students, who were heavily involved in the campaign, for their hard work and passion
