Overview The current travel restrictions surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic meant that, for the first time in 26 years, I have not visited Burgundy to taste and understand the latest vintage. However, following an informative ‘Zoom’ call with Frédéric Barnier to learn his thoughts and hear his understandable enthusiasm for the 2019 wines, plus a small tasting of wines, it has been quite easy to conclude that we have another extremely 01234 5km attractive vintage in 2019. In short, the wines are defined by their concentration, ripeness and approachability. Yes, there were challenges, as there always are in a relatively marginal climate, although recent warm vintages might suggest otherwise. The major challenge for this vintage came in the form of millerandage, where the vines failed to develop bunches of consistently sized grapes because of the cool or excessively windy weather during the precise period of the flowering. This had the impact of dramatically reducing the volume of juice in the fruit whilst concentrating the structural elements of the resulting wine - its acidity, alcohol and phenolic matter. This situation was exacerbated by a very dry growing season which has sadly

Quality is very consistent throughout the region with an abundance of spectacular wines on offer, which lovers of fine Burgundy can look forward to enjoying in the medium term but where patience will certainly be rewarded with some exceptionally fine bottles. Philip Tuck mw Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume
Chablis is in the northern part of Burgundy, half way between Dijon and Paris. The continental climate with cold winters, spring frosts and hot summers combine with the marly limestone soils, to mould the unique character of Chablis wines. About 3,500 hectares are planted with 100% Chardonnay, where 1er Cru vineyards represent 20% of total planted area. Fourchaume is one of 40 Climats of Premiers Crus within Chablis, located just north of Chablis town, with a south to south-west aspect. After a soft pressing, part of the juice is fermented in wooden barrels of 406 litres produced by Louis Jadot’s cooperage Cadus.
The other part is vinified and aged in stainless steel vats. Aging usually lasts 13 to 15 months on fine lees before bottling.

Chablis Blanchot Grand Cru
Chablis is in the northern part of Burgundy, half way between Dijon and Paris. The continental climate with cold winters, spring frosts and hot summers combine with the marly limestone soils, to mould the unique character of Chablis wines. 7 Climats can be called Grand Cru in Chablis: Preuses, Bougros, Les Clos, Grenouilles, Blanchot, Valmur and Vaudésir. Those vineyards are all situated on the hill on the right side of Le Serein river. Thanks to its position on a slope with eastern exposition and ageing in oak for 15 to 18 months, Blanchot Grand Cru has a strong, full-bodied character, with plenty of weight and rich texture on the palate.

Loché Vinzelles
R m n he h rin 1 m One hectare in size, Les Perrières vineyard is located on the so called ‘back side of the rock’, halfway up the slope, just above Domaine Ferret’s Le Clos parcel. The slope, which faces south- east, is somewhat steeper than that of Le Clos. The average age 01234 5 km of the vines is some 35 years and these grow on soils derived from alluvial deposits, consisting of a mix of deep silt and clay containing few stones. The subsoil features streaks of limestone and limestone marls, while the top layers, which are moderate in depth, are littered with stones on the surface (calcite and flint) over a metre thick layer of limestone marls. Generally, the wines are characterised by an intensely generous nose with creamy honeysuckle aromas and a vivid palate showing a pleasing balance between depth of flavour and richness, and a long finish. Ripeness of fruit gives the wine incredible richness that will become even more explosive as it matures over time.

Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Guettes domaine gagey
Savigny-lès-Beaune accounts for 380 hectares and produces approximately 12,500 hectolitres annually, of which only 4% is white. There are 22 Premier Crus covering 144 hectares. These Premiers Crus are divided by the river Rhoin into northern and southern parts. The southern part has a gravel undersoil and produces lighter more delicate wines. The northern part, where the Clos des Guettes vineyard is situated, has a clay undersoil and therefore produces more powerful wines. Clos des Guettes vineyard totals 0.98 hectares.

Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Le Clos Blanc domaine gagey
The vineyard of Les Grèves is situated adjacent to Les Theurons. These two vineyards are the largest appellations of the Beaune Premiers Crus and Les Grèves is the largest at 34 hectares in size. Although all the Premier Cru vineyards of Beaune are entitled to produce white as well as red wines, Les Grèves is one of the few to yield a white wine equal in status and quality to its red. In the 1980s, André Gagey acquired just under one hectare of Chardonnay vines in Les Grèves. This unusual, rare and rather exotic white wine is generally full, rich and spicy. The broad fruit flavours and exceptional depth are offset by nuances of almonds and gently toasted oak.

Meursault 1er Cru Blagny
Meursault is the centre of the four communes comprising that part of the Côte de Beaune known as the ‘Côte des Blancs’, so named for the quality and predominance of its white wines. The communes of Meursault, Blagny, Chassagne and Puligny define this four mile strip characterised by a patchwork of chalky soils ideally suited to the Chardonnay grape. The Premier Cru Meursault Blagny appellation applies to white wines only, and encompasses the production of four vineyards covering 23.5 hectares at the far southwest corner of Meursault which are shared, for classification purposes, with the commune of Blagny at the top of the slope. This wine is usually vinified and aged for 15 months in oak barrels and is generally a broadly-structured cuvée which balances firmness with ripe fruit flavours. It matures slightly earlier than those vineyards on lower lying terrain.

Meursault 1er Cru Charmes domaine louis jadot
Meursault is the centre of the four communes (Meursault, Blagny, Chassagne and Puligny) comprising that part of the Côte de Beaune known as the Côte des Blancs, named for the quality and predominance of its white wines. The vineyards are spread over gentle slopes, between 230 and 360 metres above sea level. The eastern orientation is ideal, allowing maximum sunlight. Its chalky soils with white marl are best suited to the Chardonnay grape. Although bordering Puligny to the south, the Charmes vineyard produces classically proportional Meursault with rich, broad nutty flavours that develop further with age.

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts domaine louis jadot
Puligny-Montrachet, situated to the south of Meursault and to the north of Chassagne-Montrachet, shares with Chassagne a handful of the greatest white wine vineyards in the world. The Premier Cru vineyards of Puligny Montrachet, noted for the exceptionally high and consistent quality of the wines they produce, stretch across the upper half of Puligny’s slope from Meursault to Chassagne. Les Referts is adjacent to the commune of Meursault to the north, and directly below the named vineyards of Les Combettes and Clos de la Garenne. The clay and chalk soil, which is very stony, drains well and warms through easily. The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts has a pale golden colour which is quite bright. The soils give to this wine a very fine structure and mineral character, with fruit, honey and fern aromas. On the palate, the acidity is perfectly balanced and the wine has a good length.

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot domaine louis jadot
Situated in the south of the Côte de Beaune, Chassagne- Montrachet is one of the 5 villages of the prestigious Côte de Blancs. Facing east and southeast, white Premier Cru soils are mainly made of brown clay and limestone. Chassagne- Montrachet Premier Cru vineyards cover an area of 160 hectares. Abbaye de Morgeot is situated in the south of the commune, around the old abbey, planted on deep soil composed of marl and limestone. The wine is aged for 15 months before bottling. Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot is a very well balanced wine, full-bodied, powerful and rich with characters of white fruits, white flowers and honey.

Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru domaine des héritiers louis jadot
On the slope that descends from La Montagne, one of the highest elevations in the Côte d’Or, Aloxe-Corton, Pernard- Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny converge. Their Grand Cru vineyards wrap roughly 240 degrees around the hill. The Grand Cru of Le Charlemagne covers 17 hectares stretching from near the summit to mid-slope and is among the five vineyards of the commune in which the variegated chalk and iron rich marl soils yield both Corton and Corton-Charlemagne. Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot owns an exceptional 2 hectare south-facing plot acquired in 1914. It yields a benchmark Corton-Charlemagne for which Louis Jadot is famous. A wine of elegance and depth, its aristocratic bouquet and luscious full-fruit complexity are complemented by nuances of honey, cinnamon and oak, with an intense, lasting finish.
