Overview The current travel restrictions surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic meant that, for the first time in 26 years, I have not visited Burgundy to taste and understand the latest vintage. However, following an informative ‘Zoom’ call with Frédéric Barnier to learn his thoughts and hear his understandable enthusiasm for the 2019 wines, plus a small tasting of wines, it has been quite easy to conclude that we have another extremely 01234 5km attractive vintage in 2019. In short, the wines are defined by their concentration, ripeness and approachability. Yes, there were challenges, as there always are in a relatively marginal climate, although recent warm vintages might suggest otherwise. The major challenge for this vintage came in the form of millerandage, where the vines failed to develop bunches of consistently sized grapes because of the cool or excessively windy weather during the precise period of the flowering. This had the impact of dramatically reducing the volume of juice in the fruit whilst concentrating the structural elements of the resulting wine - its acidity, alcohol and phenolic matter. This situation was exacerbated by a very dry growing season which has sadly

Philip Tuck mw Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume

Chablis is in the northern part of Burgundy, half way between and Paris. The continental climate with cold winters, spring frosts and hot summers combine with the marly limestone soils, to mould the unique character of Chablis wines. About 3,500 hectares are planted with 100% Chardonnay, where 1er Cru vineyards represent 20% of total planted area. Fourchaume is one of 40 Climats of Premiers Crus within Chablis, located just north of Chablis town, with a south to south-west aspect. After a soft pressing, part of the juice is fermented in wooden barrels of 406 litres produced by Louis Jadot’s cooperage Cadus.

The other part is vinified and aged in stainless steel vats. Aging usually lasts 13 to 15 months on fine lees before bottling.

Chablis Blanchot Grand Cru

Chablis is in the northern part of Burgundy, half way between Dijon and Paris. The continental climate with cold winters, spring frosts and hot summers combine with the marly limestone soils, to mould the unique character of Chablis wines. 7 Climats can be called Grand Cru in Chablis: Preuses, Bougros, Les Clos, Grenouilles, Blanchot, Valmur and Vaudésir. Those vineyards are all situated on the hill on the right side of Le Serein river. Thanks to its position on a slope with eastern exposition and ageing in oak for 15 to 18 months, Blanchot Grand Cru has a strong, full-bodied character, with plenty of weight and rich texture on the palate.

Loché Vinzelles

Rmnhehrin 1m One hectare in size, Les Perrières vineyard is located on the so called ‘back side of the rock’, halfway up the slope, just above Domaine Ferret’s Le Clos parcel. The slope, which faces south- east, is somewhat steeper than that of Le Clos. The average age 01234 5 km of the vines is some 35 years and these grow on soils derived from alluvial deposits, consisting of a mix of deep silt and clay containing few stones. The subsoil features streaks of limestone and limestone marls, while the top layers, which are moderate in depth, are littered with stones on the surface (calcite and flint) over a metre thick layer of limestone marls. Generally, the wines are characterised by an intensely generous nose with creamy honeysuckle aromas and a vivid palate showing a pleasing balance between depth of flavour and richness, and a long finish. Ripeness of fruit gives the wine incredible richness that will become even more explosive as it matures over time.

Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Guettes domaine gagey

Savigny-lès-Beaune accounts for 380 hectares and produces approximately 12,500 hectolitres annually, of which only 4% is white. There are 22 Premier Crus covering 144 hectares. These Premiers Crus are divided by the river Rhoin into northern and southern parts. The southern part has a gravel undersoil and produces lighter more delicate wines. The northern part, where the Clos des Guettes vineyard is situated, has a clay undersoil and therefore produces more powerful wines. Clos des Guettes vineyard totals 0.98 hectares.

Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Le Clos Blanc domaine gagey

The vineyard of Les Grèves is situated adjacent to Les Theurons. These two vineyards are the largest appellations of the Beaune Premiers Crus and Les Grèves is the largest at 34 hectares in size. Although all the Premier Cru vineyards of Beaune are entitled to produce white as well as red wines, Les Grèves is one of the few to yield a white wine equal in status and quality to its red. In the 1980s, André Gagey acquired just under one hectare of Chardonnay vines in Les Grèves. This unusual, rare and rather exotic white wine is generally full, rich and spicy. The broad fruit flavours and exceptional depth are offset by nuances of almonds and gently toasted oak.

Meursault 1er Cru Blagny

Meursault is the centre of the four communes comprising that part of the Côte de Beaune known as the ‘Côte des Blancs’, so named for the quality and predominance of its white wines. The communes of Meursault, Blagny, Chassagne and Puligny define this four mile strip characterised by a patchwork of chalky soils ideally suited to the Chardonnay grape. The Premier Cru Meursault Blagny appellation applies to white wines only, and encompasses the production of four vineyards covering 23.5 hectares at the far southwest corner of Meursault which are shared, for classification purposes, with the commune of Blagny at the top of the slope. This wine is usually vinified and aged for 15 months in oak barrels and is generally a broadly-structured cuvée which balances firmness with ripe fruit flavours. It matures slightly earlier than those vineyards on lower lying terrain.

Meursault 1er Cru Charmes domaine louis jadot

Meursault is the centre of the four communes (Meursault, Blagny, Chassagne and Puligny) comprising that part of the Côte de Beaune known as the Côte des Blancs, named for the quality and predominance of its white wines. The vineyards are spread over gentle slopes, between 230 and 360 metres above sea level. The eastern orientation is ideal, allowing maximum sunlight. Its chalky soils with white marl are best suited to the Chardonnay grape. Although bordering Puligny to the south, the Charmes vineyard produces classically proportional Meursault with rich, broad nutty flavours that develop further with age.

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts domaine louis jadot

Puligny-Montrachet, situated to the south of Meursault and to the north of Chassagne-Montrachet, shares with Chassagne a handful of the greatest white wine vineyards in the world. The Premier Cru vineyards of Puligny Montrachet, noted for the exceptionally high and consistent quality of the wines they produce, stretch across the upper half of Puligny’s slope from Meursault to Chassagne. Les Referts is adjacent to the commune of Meursault to the north, and directly below the named vineyards of Les Combettes and Clos de la Garenne. The clay and chalk soil, which is very stony, drains well and warms through easily. The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts has a pale golden colour which is quite bright. The soils give to this wine a very fine structure and mineral character, with fruit, honey and fern aromas. On the palate, the acidity is perfectly balanced and the wine has a good length.

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot domaine louis jadot

Facing east and southeast, white Premier Cru soils are mainly made of brown clay and limestone. Chassagne- Montrachet Premier Cru vineyards cover an area of 160 hectares. Abbaye de Morgeot is situated in the south of the commune, around the old abbey, planted on deep soil composed of marl and limestone. The wine is aged for 15 months before bottling. Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Abbaye de Morgeot is a very well balanced wine, full-bodied, powerful and rich with characters of white fruits, white flowers and honey.

Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru domaine des héritiers louis jadot

On the slope that descends from La Montagne, one of the highest elevations in the Côte d’Or, Aloxe-Corton, Pernard- Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny converge. Their Grand Cru vineyards wrap roughly 240 degrees around the hill. The Grand Cru of Le Charlemagne covers 17 hectares stretching from near the summit to mid-slope and is among the five vineyards of the commune in which the variegated chalk and iron rich marl soils yield both Corton and Corton-Charlemagne. Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot owns an exceptional 2 hectare south-facing plot acquired in 1914. It yields a benchmark Corton-Charlemagne for which Louis Jadot is famous. A wine of elegance and depth, its aristocratic bouquet and luscious full-fruit complexity are complemented by nuances of honey, cinnamon and oak, with an intense, lasting finish.

eri m Bruiy m Savigny Les Beaune 1er Cru La Dominode domaine louis jadot

The commune of Savigny-lès-Beaune is located above and between Aloxe Corton and Pernand Vergelesses, in the north of the Côte de Beaune. Savigny vineyards have south, south-east, east and north-east exposure and range from 220 to 360 meters altitude. Savigny’s vineyards show two distinct soil types. Those to the north of the river Rhoin are rich in clay, producing full, structured wines; those to the south are gravelly, producing lighter, more elegant wines. Domaine Louis Jadot is proprietor of a superb, easterly-exposed two hectare parcel in La Dominode, which lies entirely within the Haut Jarrons 1er Cru acquired in 1989. This site produces a fresh, frank, vivacious wine of considerable charm, with bright, red berry fruit and a fragrant, refined bouquet.

Beaune 1er Cru Boucherottes domaine des héritiers louis jadot

Beaune vineyards are the most extensive of the Côte de Beaune, between Savigny to the north and Pommard to the south. There are no Grand Cru vineyards in this commune but 36 Premiers Crus. The vineyards of Beaune are mainly on the slopes, which is why so many make Premier Cru status. Les Boucherottes vineyard lies at the southern end of the commune, partially bordering Pommard. Boucherottes covers slightly more than 8.5ha and is generally considered to be among the ten best Premiers Crus of Beaune. The wines in the southern zone characteristically produce delicate, tender wines but in Boucherottes the deep clay soils add a lush quality to the wine. Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot yields an aromatic, full-bodied wine of considerable structure and complexity tempered by a rich fruit roundness and plump, sumptuous texture.

Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules monopole, domaine des héritiers louis jadot

Beaune vineyards are the most extensive of the Côte de Beaune, between Savigny to the north and Pommard to the south. There are no Grand Cru vineyards in this commune but 36 Premiers Crus. The vineyards of Beaune are mainly on the slopes, which is why so many make Premier Cru status. The Clos des Ursules is a 2.15 hectare enclave purchased by Louis Henri Denis Jadot in 1826 and has remained a solely owned property of the Jadot family ever since. It is the jewel of the Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot portfolio, producing a wine of consistent excellence which, for the characteristic delicacy and suppleness of Vignes Franches, shows striking tannin and dimension. Full, firm and rich in ripe-berry flavours, its fine, slightly earthy bouquet and long, lush finish converge in a wine perfectly balancing elegance and power.

Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes domaine louis jadot

Volnay lies roughly in the centre of the Côte de Beaune, bordered by Pommard to the north-east, Monthélie to the west and Meursault to the south. The south-easterly exposed vineyards produce only red wines of which 26 are Premier Crus. The soil is extremely thin, chalky, high in calcium and yields the most delicate and aromatic Burgundies. The strip below, where most of the Premier Crus are located, is much lower in chalk with a thin iron rich layer covering a strong subsoil. The altitude of the vineyards rises from 230m to 370m. Many consider the Premier Cru of Clos des Chênes to be the finest vineyard in the village along with its neighbour Les Caillerets.

Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots domaine gagey

The commune of Nuits-Saint-Georges is the southernmost commune of the Côtes de Nuits. The Premier Cru wines of Nuits-Saint-Georges are among the sturdiest and longest-lived of the Côte de Nuits, yet these vary in dimension from north to south. The northern vineyards near Vosne-Romanée produce comparatively elegant wines, while those in the south produce big, robust wines. Les Boudots vineyard, located next to the prestigious Vosne- Romanée Malconsorts, is a parcel covering 6.5 hectares. Maison Louis Jadot holds a long term contract on a superb, half hectare parcel belonging to the Gagey family. It yields a full-bodied, tannic and vigorous wine that is rich in fruit complexity, yet shows a certain elegance of structure and toasty, smokey nuances in the bouquet.

Clos Vougeot Grand Cru domaine louis jadot

The Clos de Vougeot was founded in 1112 under the Cistercian order by St. Bernard de Clairvaux. The monks began with a few acres of vines and built a small chapel and press house at their edge. Over the next 200 years, a great many vineyards were bequeathed to the order. The wall enclosing the vineyards was completed in 1336 but it wasn’t until 1551 that construction of the Château du Clos de Vougeot started. The Clos remained intact in the church’s hands until the French Revolution. Today, its 50.6 hectare of vineyards are divided among over 70 owners. Louis Jadot is one of the principal owners in this highly fragmented Clos with a 2.6 hectare parcel acquired in the 1980s, and further controls another 0.69 hectares through long term contracts.

This wine of power and depth shows a subtlety of body and elegant complexity, with a full, fragrant and distinctly floral bouquet.
