Wednesday 08/16/2006 1:59:12am Name: Faith Felger Halstrom E-Mail: [email protected] Referred By: Just Surfed In Other Referred by: City/Country: Danville, California Comments: My father Alan Craig Felger was a first Lt. in the 7th Div. He was trapped in a bunker on Pork Chop Hill in March 1953 with 10 others and called in artillary fire on his own position. He was one of the lucky ones. He and the others were rescued and dug out of the bunker. He married Joan Schwartzenburg and had six children. He died in 1985 at age 55 of heart failure. He never talked about his war experiences. We learned about them when the obit reporter told us of the war reports that came in from the wire services. He took his memories of that experience to the grave with him. I wonder what he would think about this web site dedicated to education about the Korean War and if alive if he would be willing to share his experience. I'm amazed by the desire of veterans to reconnect and share their own stories which I plan to share with my own children, who never got to meet their grandfather.

Monday 06/26/2006 7:04:14pm Name: laura E-Mail: [email protected] Referred By: Friend Other Referred by: City/Country: Costa Mesa, CA USA Comments: The Family of Joseph Mack Harper would like some help from the men who served with the Communications Platoon, Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment who were with the unit when they were stationed in Japan before going to Korea. Joe Harper had about 250 photos from the time he spent in Japan and the identity of most of the men is unknown. There is a boot camp photo of 22 men pictured with their names signed on the front. Many of these men were KIA or MIA in Korea. And there are many other photos of other men not in the main photo.

Joseph Mack Harper died at Chosin and his remains were never recovered. The Harper family has no photos or letters from Joe after he went to Korea. It is their desire to first identify the men in these pictures and then to share with others.

In Joe's Niece's own words.... I would be happy to forward any of the pix (group or otherwise) to anyone who may use it for ID-ing or helping in any way... I am also willing to share the pix to other families, which was an original hope of our family's, sharing the wonderful things we found and sharing information to learn about his life... we have no photos after he left Japan, so Korea pix would be precious to us... But no, no one in other families has contacted me...

If you are a Veteran from this Unit, please contact Joyce at [email protected] so we can find out the names of these Heroes.

We remember that Freedom has a cost.

Thursday 03/02/2006 12:52:57am Name: John Cheek E-Mail: [email protected] Referred By: Just Surfed In Other Referred by: City/Country: Vancouver, Washington Comments: One of the books offered in the General Store of this website was authored by a cyber-friend of mine, Robert Campbell. Bob and I never met in person. I found his e- mail address after reading his novel, IN THE SHADOW OF GLORY, and wrote him a note complimenting him on his book. He was a Marine in the 1st Marine Division and I was in the Army but assigned to the 1st Marine Division’s area of operation. I manned a listening bunker of the Army Security Agency in the same sector of the front line that Bob had spent his combat time.

Bob encouraged me to write about my experiences in the war that linked us, the Korean War. The result was my novel, STAY SAFE, BUDDY that is also in the General Store of this website. Sadly, Bob died unexpectedly before getting to read my novel.

Robert Campbell’s memoirs are also on this site. He e-mailed me a copy of his memoirs a few months before he died. However, I just read them again and found something that I had overlooked until now. It is one of those "well I'll be @#%$!" incidents.

I spent my last year in the Army assigned to the National Security Agency in Washington, DC. Campbell spent his last five months in the Marines assigned to the Naval Security Station in Washington, DC. The NSA was only a couple of years old and was located; you guessed it, inside the compound of the Naval Security Station in NW Washington, DC. I was assigned there from June '53 through May '54 and Campbell was there from March '54 to September '54. Although we never met Robert Campbell and I probably had a nodding acquaintance there because the entire compound had less that a thousand persons.

It's a small world sometimes.

I spent the last three months of the Korean War in a listening bunker on the far western sector of the MLR. I was in the Army Security Agency and attached to the 1st Marine Division most of the time but also was attached to the 25th Infantry Division part of the time.

Good luck to all my fellow Veterans.

The info. on the ABMC site said he was with the 2nd Air Postal Squadron but I can only find info for the 1st. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated if anyone knows where I can find further info. or if anyone knew Captain Fitzgerald. At the time of his death, he was married to Lorraine and had two sons, John J. Jr. and Michael. We do not know where he served out of, his BD, place of birth, or any other pertinent info.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR ANY HELP!

The advances in quality of life, as well as Korean Industry, was near unreal. A wooden plow, pulled by an ox in 1950, was their modern technology. Today their industrial capacity competes with major manufacturing nations of the world .... while North Koreans, the industrial part of Korea before Korea War, would freeze and starve, except for free world generosity. Many adopted children(abroad) were trying to find their parents and some managed to do it. I can see that TV show once a week(Monday evening, I guess.) and people see it wondering if anyone they know appear at the end of the show. (It shows us several video clips of adopted children who are looking forward to seeing their birth parents -about 15 seconds each-) Well, I really hope this would help you and I'll never forget your greatest holy sacrifices.

We were a great bunch of double cluthchers and had a great crew of soldiers from all over the USA and various different ages. Our officers from Captain Clarence L. Walk and down were top notch and treated us kindly. There was Lt. Frost, Lt. Stein, CWO Goggins and Lt. Sam Price. There was Tennessee in charge of our motor pool and many others that drove trucks with supplies that we picked up from the LST'S that landed in Sokchori and we brought them up to the front lines. I am especially looking to find Sid Stein who was with me during my two year enlistment and the last I knew he was in the Miami Area a long time ago. Then there were the guys from my basic training outfit The 420th Engineer Dump Truck Company at Ft. Bragg, N.C. I was there with them from February 1951 until September 1951 when I got my orders for Korea. The days I spent in both outfits will never be forgotten and many nights I think about all these people that I learned what life was all about because when I enlisted I was 5 days out of high school and the tender age of 18 1/2. Life has been good to me . I have been married to my lovely wife Irene 47 years, 2 children and 2 grand daughters. I am retired and living in Kings Point/Tamarac in South Florida. Where over the past few years I have had 5 way by- pass surgery and then a pacemake. Would love to hear from whoever is out there that served with me. God bless all of you.

Wednesday 08/10/2005 10:11:36pm Name: Gregory J. Dunn E-Mail: [email protected] Referred By: Just Surfed In Other Referred by: City/Country: Mt. Sterling, IL-USA Comments: My father(John D. Dunn) served in Korea as a medic. He stablized wounded soldiers until they could get to a medical unit for proper treatment. He died Dec.30 2003 at the age of 75. Before he died, I can remember him telling me when an officer came up to him and told him he was on temporary leave and was going back to the states. He didn't know why. When he got back, He discovered his first wife had died of Spinal Meningitis. After he buried her, he had to go back to Korea leaving behind a 1 year old daughter. My father never voluntary said anything about his experiences in Korea. Only if he was asked then he would say something. I notice that in most service personnel who were involved in a war where they saw death and destruction. It affected their lives.
