Working with staff at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), the Planning Department recently reviewed and confirmed the boundaries of encumbered land within each park. Accessibility evalua ons for park facili es were conducted by Planning staff through field work using resources suggested in the MDNR Guidelines and tools purchased for that specific purpose.
The following items are provided for each Metropark: x Park informa on page explaining the general loca on, classifica on, size, func on, and history of the park, along with tables detailing trail miles, facility counts, and neighboring municipality master plans. x Park map showing the land, water resources, and major facili es in the park. x Biodiversity map outlining the loca on of cri cal natural resources, explained on the following page. x Map of land encumbered by various grants, including the Land & Water Conserva on Fund and the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund. x Table showing grant details and current condi ons. x Broad findings of staff’s Americans with Disabili es Act (ADA) evalua on for facili es at each park (detailed assessments are provided in an Appendix).

Biodiversity 5 | RECREATION INVENTORY
BIODIVERSITY
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life present in a given area, o en measured by number and distribu on of species. It is important to preserve because it provides humans with ecological services such as clean water and oxygen, leads to greater resistance and resilience during natural and human- caused disturbances, and reduces the risk of disease.
Iden fying biodiversity areas can help inform the development of current and future park ameni es, allowing the Metroparks to fulfill its mandate and mission statement of protec ng the natural resources of the communi es it serves. Development within biodiversity areas is carefully reviewed to minimize unnecessary disrup on.
The following criteria for determining biodiversity areas were adapted from a matrix that the Natural Resources Department uses to determine work priori es throughout the park system.
Metric What Why Metric What Why the presence of a species under legal areas with few protec on, or of a statutory, occurrences percentage of total invasive species Elemental Percent Invasive complete system protected by law from acreage with invasive require less work, Occurrence Species Cover recognized as in inten onal take plant coverage have greater return condi on similar to pre- on investment se lement

5 | RECREATION INVENTORY Accessibility
ACCESSIBILITY
A limited accessibility evalua on was conducted by planning and opera ons staff to determine the state of the system as a whole and inform goals for the future. The evalua on was based on the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design1 and focused on accessible parking, pathways, and the recrea onal facili es highlighted in the 2010 Standards: boat launches, fishing piers, playgrounds, golf courses, and pools. More detailed analyses of the facili es and the interior of buildings may be conducted at a later date.
For a general sense of the accessibility of recrea on throughout the system, each park was analyzed and mapped using Google Earth for the existence of paved routes leading from accessible parking to the area(s) of use. The existence of pavement alone does not cons tute an accessible route, as slope, width, and evenness requirements must also be met. However, this allowed for iden fica on of areas where no paved route was present and presented on maps for each park. In order to achieve compliance, pavement would have to be added or the area would have to be otherwise redesigned.
Next, checklists from the New England ADA Center2 were adapted and used in field evalua ons of specific facili es in the parks. The checklist results were used to develop a ra ng for each facility, shown in a table for each park. The ra ng system is as follows:
1 — no elements are accessible
2 — some elements are accessible
3 — most elements are accessible
4 — all elements are accessible
5 — facility follows Universal Design3 principles
Finally, all the results were consolidated and used to form goals for the park system’s future accessibility. These are described in the Goals and Objec ves sec on of the plan. The full park facility checklists and accessibility maps can be found in the appendix.

An environment (or any building, product, or service in that environment) should be designed to meet the needs of all people who wish to use it. This is not a special requirement, for the benefit of only a minority of the popula on. It is a fundamental condi on of good design. If an environment is accessible, usable, convenient and a pleasure to use, everyone benefits. By considering the diverse needs and abili es of all throughout the design process, universal design creates products, services and environments that meet peoples' needs. Simply put, universal design is good design.”

Understanding what ac vi es and ameni es are offered at each helps the Metroparks create unique a rac ons that fill recrea onal gaps and complement exis ng facili es. The Metroparks welcome collabora on with other providers of recrea on, as evidenced by regional trail linkages, reciprocal waterpark overflow agreements, invasive species management coopera on, and other partnerships.
Due to the large land area covered by these five coun es, the following charts and maps iden fy only state and county recrea on. The local parks throughout this region are too numerous to include, but remain important loca ons for daily recrea onal ac vi es.
The chart for each county notes the ac vi es and facili es available in each park as a means of comparison. These are accurate to the best knowledge of Metroparks staff, but may contain errors or omissions. The numbers at the top of each park column correspond to that park’s loca on on the county map. These maps also highlight the distribu on of select recrea onal facili es: public beaches, pools, golf courses, disc golf courses, campgrounds, boat launches and rental sites.
