Having distant relations in the Nordic countries, Kerry Bog Pony traces the pony’s survival from Viking past to European protection. Those interested in the equine world, biodiversity or simply in life in the ‘Kingdom of Kerry’ will love the combination of Kerry traditions linked with the story of a breed that is exclusively Irish. Close to at one point, the actions of a few concerned individuals eventually led to recognition and support for the breed in Ireland and the European Union. The book details the historical, environmental and economic influences, with research from specialist contributors including University College Dublin, Sport Ireland and the National Museum of Ireland. In partnership with the Kerry Bog Pony Co-operative Society, The Story of the Kerry Bog Pony is part-funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food’s Grant Aid Scheme for the Conservation of Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. About the Authors: Mary McGrath and Gay Keogh are sisters and were raised in a horse-loving environment at The Curragh, Co. Kildare. Mary has worked as an art conservator in Harvard and Denver Universities and the Getty Museum in the United States. Here in Ireland, she has provided consultancy services to the Hugh Lane Gallery and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. She also set up the Irish Horse Museum in Kildare.
