HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Dear Parishioners,

During this season of Lent, we teach our students the importance of prayer, giving up and giving to others.

Our candy sales are going very well. Many thanks to all who have participated! The sales will continue until further notice. The school receives 50% profit!

We are in the process of planning for registration next school year. Students were asked why they like Holy Cross Catholic School. Some of the responses are as follows: “I like Holy Cross Catholic School because we have religion and science and reading plus recess. The teachers are nice and great…it’s the best Catholic School ever!...because it’s about Jesus, Mary, Joseph and it is fun. I like Math. I like having good friends that are nice to me. I like that we can pray in our classroom. I like we have a fun time learning…we can pray and worship God.”

Please keep us in your prayers as we plan for next school year.

May God bless you and yours!

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT: The story of contains one of the saddest lines in the Bible: “When the Lord saw how great the wickedness of human beings was on earth, and how every desire that their heart conceived was al- ways nothing but evil, the Lord regretted making human beings on the earth, and his heart was grieved” (Genesis 6:5-6). In this story, the author portrays God as one whose broken heart goes from grieving over humankind, to destroying all life, to regretting this action, to giving humankind another chance through the covenant with Noah and every living crea- ture. The flood that Noah survived prefigures the baptismal waters that wash away sin’s hold on our hearts and bring the gift of the Hoy Spirit. Through this Spirit we grow ever more fully as children of God and heirs with Christ. Jesus, our brother, showed what it means to be a child of God, enduring temptation, seeking always to do the Father’s will. From the desert he went forth to proclaim the kingdom of God. God’s presence among humankind, and God’s desire to rule our hearts. As Lent begins, what needs to be done on our part to draw closer to God over the coming forty days?

CHILDREN MAKING THEIR FIRST HOLY COMMUNION IN MAY:

 First Confesssions for children will be in the church on: Saturday, March 7th for Holy Cross Students Saturday, March 14th for Sunday Students Saturday, March 21st for Sombrillo and Fairview Students.

FAST AND ABSTINENCE: Abstinence is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Fridays dur- ing Lent are days of abstinence. Parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, suffi- cient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eat- ing between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Those who are unable to observe the regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.

Transfiguration. . .Transformation is our teaching this Wednesday. It is based on the teachings for the 2nd Sunday of Lent. The story of Transfiguration can be seen as a foreshadowing of Baptism. When Peter reacted to the glory of Jesus transfigured on the mountaintop, he wanted that experience to remain forever. Jesus, however, was giving the apostles, Peter, James and John the gift of seeing the glory which was to come. Peter didn’t understand that this experience was not an end in itself, just like Baptism isn’t an end in itself. Bap- tism, although a major point in our journey, is instead a turning point.

“In becoming Catholic Christians, we have decided to commit ourselves to live by certain values, to give public witness to our belief in the Lord. We are undertaking God’s continuing mission in the world on behalf of the poor, the blind, the suffering. After our baptism, our Christian lives will turn more and more in this direction of service” (Chilson, A Len- ten Pilgrimage).

Love, faith and glory are all themes in the Gospel of Mark 9:2-9. Real love is a total self-giving for the other. It in- volves sacrifice. Its fruit is the reward of self-giving and sacrifice offered to us. Jesus’ love was brought to us by his sacrifice for us on the cross. “He paid a debt he didn’t owe because we owed a debt we couldn’t pay”(Hahn). His love for us taught us what love is and what love can be.

Love reveals the fullness of life. How are we revealing that Christ love that is inside each one of us? Faith is revealed by what we do and say. Faith reveals that we have a living relationship with Jesus and this faith brings wholeness into our lives. The faith we as individuals have brings faith into our church and our neighborhood communities. How do we bring the spirit of faith into our families, church and community?

Glory as a theme is spoken about many times in Scripture. It not only refers to joy or brilliance or radiance, but also the presence of Jesus and his revealing himself to us. Jesus, in the Transfiguration, was not revealing himself to the apostles for show, but to show them the salvation which was to follow his death and resurrection. How do we live the glory of God which we know awaits us and is present now?

Our Catechumens and Candidates are now beginning a period of Purification and Enlightenment. Please pray for them as they go to the Cathedral Basilica of St. to be greeted by Archbishop Sheehan and to receive his blessing for the continuation of their journey to receive the Sacraments.
