Director’s Message

The Arts House is full of pungent flavours this June and July! We are serving up our first-ever food series Food-O-Philia, the Singapore premiere of the critically acclaimed play The Case of Katherine Mansfield, and a retrospective of the late Oscar-winning screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, among other delectable choices. Be prepared to venture in with a strong stomach – and heart.

It is no wonder that food plays a central role in many books that we love. From the madeleine in Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past to the gruel in Oliver Twist, and even all the fantastical concoctions in the Harry Potter series, food is often used as a device for evocation, cipher and metaphor. We pride ourselves on being a nation of foodies. Our restaurants are ranked among the best in the world, and we know the locations of the best hawker stalls like the back of our hands. But how well do we know ourselves as a food community? As a community, we have our different narratives, preferences and thoughts, sometimes even competing against each other. Our new food series Food-O-Philia is thus our attempt to burrow deep into our system and understand ourselves better through food. We use art – books, play, films, music, photography – to explore our relationship with food, provoke passionate discussion and ultimately, have a belly good time (pg 3)!

Katherine Mansfield (1888 – 1923) is aN ew Zealand writer who is little-known in Singapore, but she has been hailed as a modernist writer ahead of her times. She was friends with Virginia Woolfe and Oscar Wilde, who were in turn influenced by her writing. The Case of Katherine Mansfield (pg 17) is a powerful one-woman play that distils the essence of the writer, revealing the mercurial charm, talent and truth of the writer. The Arts House is very proud to present this award-winning play by Catherine Downes, the much lauded director/playwright/actress who has performed the play all over the world that is finally making its long overdue premiere now in Singapore.

Cinema lost one of its finest talents when Ruth Prawer Jhabvala passed away this April at age 85. Jhabvala is best known as the writing partner of the film triumvirate Merchant Ivory. She won two Oscars for adapting A Room With A View and Howards End for the screen. We pay tribute to her cinematic acuity and literary prowess with a six-film retrospective (pg 18).

So come dig in at The Arts House!

FOOD- O-PHILIA 2013 food-o-philia FOOD-O-PHILIA 2013: LET’S MAKANISE The Arts House

7\37 food-o-philia DELECTABLE ACTS: PERFORMANCES

A sumptuous buffet of original music, storytelling and theatre acts await the audience during Food-O- Philia! Help yourself to large servings of laksa, rojak and Hokkien mee as the performances use these local delicacies as the prism through which to see and understand ourselves. ROJAK The Arts House, Wecandoit and Theatrix Ltd

Directed by: Shalaka Ranadive Writer: Gauri Gupta Cast: Vineet Kumar, Jamie Tan, Hemang Yadav, Aditya Mazumdar, Gillian Tan, Marc Valentino

With delectable references to Singapore’s multicultural culinary landscape, Rojak looks compassionately and sensitively into the lives of foreign workers who leave their shores in search of a living to keep their home fires burning.

The play is set in a workers dormitory in Serangoon Gardens where a group of Bangladeshi workers live alongside their PRC Chinese, Indian and Thai co-workers. Their daily existence is disturbed by a new arrival - Manikandan from Chennai. Unlike the others, Mani is an engineer by training but dismal employment prospects in his own country force him to take up the job of a construction worker in Mr. Yeo’s company in Singapore. Mani’s homesickness and inability to adjust to the new environment forms the base of the story. He experiences hostility from his co-workers who resent the cultural difference there is between them. Greed, hostility, loneliness juxtaposed with humorous situations that the workers find themselves in, create a warm, human interest story.

Tragic and comic at the same time, Rojak forces the viewer to look at a section of society that often goes unnoticed.
