A landmark historic estate, the property was purchased in 2003 by Constance Cassidy and Edward Walsh who have transformed it into a flagship for tourism in Sligo and the North West. Famous as the childhood home of Countess Constance Markievicz, one of the leaders of the 1916 Rising - Ireland’s armed rebellion in protest of British Occupation. Markievicz was the first woman to be elected to Dáil Eireann, where she served as Minister for Labour and thus became the first female minister in a modern Western European democracy. Countess Markievicz was also the first woman to be elected to the House of Commons at Westminster, London (where she declined to take her seat). She grew up in the house with her sister Eva Gore-Booth and her brother Josslyn Gore-Booth. Eva was a poet of distinction and an active suffragist who clashed with a young Winston Churchill over barmaids’ rights in 1908, while their brother Josslyn created one of the premier horticultural estates in Europe at Lissadell, which you will see faithfully recreated in your visit. Notably, the great poet and Nobel Laureate W. B. Yeats was friendly with the Gore Booth sisters and stayed at Lissadell in 1892 and 1893. As you can see, so much of today’s history is contained within the walls of Lissadell House, surrounded by picturesque views of The Alpine and Kitchen Gardens. Lissadell House Tour NYPD Lissadell House Kitchens SLIGO TOURS 17/18 HALF DAY TOURS NYPD Lissadell House Kitchens LISSADELL HOUSE AND GARDEN Lissadell House and Gardens is situated on the shores of Sligo Bay, 7 km north of Sligo on the Bundoran/Donegal Road. The historic and literary associations of Lissadell and the natural beauty of its setting with sea, woodland and mountains make Lissadell one of the North West’s premier tourism attractions and one not to be missed. PACKAGE INCLUDES: • Lunch at Lissadell in the Coach House • Tour of Lissadell House and Gardens Additionally, you have access to a diverse selection of exhibitions: • 1916 Exhibition • Countess Markievicz Exhibition • W.B. Yeats Exhibition • Jack Yeats Exhibition • Waterloo Exhibition • World War 2 Exhibition HISTORIC GARDENS The Alpine Garden: The Alpine Garden is a magnificent tribute to all the gardeners who have worked in it since its creation in the 1740s, in particular the industrious Sir Josslyn Gore-Booth, brother to Constance Markievicz, who created the stunning Alpine rockeries in the 1890s, and who exported seeds and bulbs from this garden all over the world; and to Sean O’Gaoithin and Jimmi Blake who led the reconstruction work, and to Pat Curneen, Rachel O’Sullivan and Carl Dacus. The Kitchen Garden: Edward and Constance have lovingly restored the Kitchen Garden which was a thriving horticultural enterprise first created by Josslyn Gore Booth between 1890 and 1944. Records show that the Lissadell Estate sold 1,400 alpine and 1,100 herbaceous varieties across Europe and the US in 1915. Lissadell was even more famous for its large commercial bulb farm, growing mainly narcissi (daffodil) and anemones, and was able to offer 258 varieties of daffodil for sale in 1915. IRELAND & SCOTLAND 2009/10 www.BrendanVacations.com 15th-century Ross Castle overlooks the Lower Lake in Killarney 2 | www.BrendanVacations.com Welcome Dear Traveler, Taking a vacation to Ireland and Britain is exciting! Wouldn’t it be great if you knew someone who has personally been there to guide you though the experience? For over 40 years, Brendan has been helping travelers plan, book and enjoy their special vacation. Whether it’s on your own, with a guide and a group of like-minded travelers, or a combination of the two, we will help you make it the vacation of your dreams. It starts with your reservation. One of our experts will personally handle all the details, make sure you have the information you need, share ‘insider’ destination secrets and answer your questions. When it comes to Ireland and Britain, my father and I know this part of the world intimately (some would say, better than anybody). My father grew up in Dublin, and I have visited many times, plus we’ve both been to England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales on numerous occasions. We have explored it all, from the famous ‘must see’ sights to little out-of-the-way local favorites. When we design our tours, we do so with the same care and thought that we use for our own personal vacations. Britain and, especially, Ireland hold a very special place in our hearts, and we look forward to sharing them with you. “Taking You Personally” is more than our slogan. It’s the way we want to be treated….so it is the way we want to treat you and every Brendan traveler.
