  • Ronald Davis Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts
Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability.

It’s a busy year for birthdays: John Wayne, FROM THE Laurence Olivier, Barbara Stanwyck, Fay Wray, Burgess Meredith, Katharine Hepburn, Gene BOOTH Autry, and Rosalind Russell, among others, would have turned 100 this year. We’re celebrating by NOT slavishly following the mob of classic-movie stations that will be running King Kong and His Girl Friday and Git Along Little Dogies in ’round-the- from the booth clock birthday bashes. Instead, we’re doing what we do best: dig through the vaults for unheralded gems and seldom-screened classics. So instead of Fay Wray screaming and John Wayne shooting, we have Walter Huston saving America (again!) in Gabriel Over the White House, Henry Fonda winning World War II in The Immortal Sergeant, Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney putting on a show (again!) in Strike Up the Band, and Judy Holliday foreseeing American Idol’s cult of instant celebrity in It Should Happen to You. And, for a change of pace, we’ve got giant grasshoppers, giant scorpions, giant creatures from Venus, and one tiny, tiny man in a handful of 1950s sci-fi classics scattered throughout the season. (Speaking of anniversaries, if you blinked, you probably missed the 35th anniversary of this very theater back in May. Happy birthday to us.) Program by Michael King (MK) and Michael W. Phillips, Jr. (MP) CHRISTMAS IN JULY | 1940 july 7, 2007 Director: Preston Sturges Striking while the iron was hot, America’s foremost cinematic satirist rushed his second feature as director intro production before his debut had even opened. Preston Sturges was eager to make use of a story he had been kicking around Universal for a decade: a regular go-getter (Dick Powell) is duped into thinking he’s won $25,000 in an advertising slogan contest with his asinine entry.

EDRS PRICE MF-$0.76 HC-$4.43 Plus Postage DESCRIPTORS *Cooperative Programs; *Educational Radio; Higher Education; *Programing (Broadcast); *Questionnaires; Shared Services; Statistical Data; Tables (Data) IDENTIFIERS Cooperative Program Tape Networks ABSTRACT Over 200 noncommercial radio stations responded to a survey to gather data on the characteristics of member stations and to sample the opinion of nonmembers toward a cooperative network concept. A second survey of 18 networks sought to gather indepth information on network operation. Results showed that 22.2 percent of the stations surveyed were participating in program cooperatives, and over 79 percent felt that network participation would be beneficial. It was concluded that the cooperative program tape network should continue in order to fulfill specialized programing needs. A copy of the two questionnaires, the letter of transmittal, and the mailing list is appended. A list of the networks that participated in the study, 12 statistical tables, and a 20-item bibliography are included. INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. Garfield plays a neer-do-well who has no future. He captures the heart of the youngest sister, Priscilla Lane and the romance goes as far as an elopement attempt Lane eloped with Garfield in the first film too. The film is brilliantly directed and flows along steadily from beginning to end. In my opinion, it is the best of the four films made by Warners. Four Daughters is available on VHS.
