3 WelcomeWelcome to theto the March September Edition of Thrussingtonof Thrussington Life Life March must be a quiet month, since there have been a few less items than usual I have actually slightly reduced the number of pages. Unfortunately the usual golf report is missing as it was snowed off earlier in the year which is a shame because it usually makes good reading!! A46 Road works You might already be aware of the road works on the A46 from mid February through to the 3rd August, the work should be between 8.00pm and 6.00am so hopefully of limited impact. It starts at the Hobby Horse Roundabout right through to Widmerpool but please be aware that during the resurfacing operations full road closure will be required. This work is due to start on the 23rd April for 4 weeks. Diversion signs will be in place!! Ed The Editor

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO LISTEN TO CHILDREN READ IN LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Can you spare an hour or two a week to listen to children read in a local primary school? Schoolreaders is looking for more volunteers in [county] to carry out this important role. Reading time for many children at home and at school is often insufficient and according to Government statistics, one in four children are now leaving primary school unable to read to the expected standard. This can have a lifelong consequence. Schoolreaders is flexible and aims to match your availability to an appropriate, local school. No qualifications are necessary, just a good command of spoken and written English and a commitment of one year is requested. Our volunteers find the scheme incredibly rewarding, knowing that a few hours helping a child learn to read each week can have such a great impact on their life chances. Please visit the website www.schoolreaders.org to join or call 01234 924111 for further information.

29 Wreake Drive, Rearsby, Leicester, LE7 4YZ 26 WI REPORT FOR MARCH 2018

There are always a lot of WI events in the early part of the year and, at our February meeting, names were taken of members wishing to attend the Wreake Valley Group Annual Meeting on Wednesday, 7 March at 7.30 pm at Gloucester House, Melton - hosted by Melton Evening WI. Tickets £6. Sue Bradshaw and Janet Heath will drive and will leave the Green at 6.45 pm. The Centenary Annual Council Meeting will be on Saturday, 10 March, 10.30 am - 5.00 pm, in Hangar 42, Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground, Bruntingthorpe (a venue large enough to hold all Leicestershire & Rutland WI members wishing to attend this very special occasion). Four of our members will be attending, leaving the Green at 8.30 am. Tickets £14. NB: Sue, Anne, Janet H and Margaret A - remember to bring a packed lunch with you! Our speaker was solicitor, James Belderbos, whose talk was “My Life in the Law” He began by telling us about his early life and upbringing in the North East of England, and how his best friend's father's profession as a solicitor had influenced his own choice of career. After University, and gaining his law qualifications, James worked as a solicitor with Leicester CC Social Services, did criminal law with a Leicester law firm and was a duty solicitor for the police, before going into partnership with others, specialising in family law. James deals mainly with divorce and has been a solicitor for 22 years. He was at pains to tell us that he did not believe in divorce, but was passionate about helping his clients through the process without having to go to court (stressful, expensive). He is one of 14 Collaborative lawyers in Leicestershire, who work together to achieve a good outcome for their clients. Couples are encouraged to write an anger statement. James likened Divorce and Separation to Bereavement, with a roller coaster of emotions, from the initial shock and denial, down through anger, depression, and then bargaining, before the gradual climb up to acceptance of the altered status. James sees his role as offering support, not advice, to people in troubled relationships. He is there to listen, listen and listen again. He urged anyone supporting family or friends who are going through a divorce to adopt this approach. Divorce is a serious subject, but James also regaled us with some of his more humorous legal encounters which were most amusing. It was a very interesting and thought provoking talk.

Next Meeting: 8 March 2018, 7.30 pm, Village Hall Speaker: Nigel Vincent, The Second Domesday Book Hostesses: Stephanie Morgan & Jennifer Sandys 27 CHURCHWARDEN’S NOTES

How quickly the months come round. Sorry Eddie last minute as usual! I look back to last months notes and can almost just repeat most of it (after the first two paragraphs that is!). But time moves on; I have always said that “I am a man of this time” and have tried to learn the ways of today’s world, not to look back, but how it has changed. Technology, the world has shrunk, instantaneous information, most of it good, but a lot of it not so good. It seems that everywhere “Badness” is rife. Whether it be in the church, schools, governments, charity organisations, business, or the media, etc. I have been lucky in that I have never directly experienced it, but I am sure it has been there but out of my sight. Perhaps this is on my mind because as a PCC we are having to endorse the C of E guidelines. ‘Promoting a Safer Church’; ‘Safeguarding Children and Young People’, ‘a Vulnerable Adults Policy’,‘ Risk assessment to see that the buildings are safe’. These may seem bureaucratic (to some) but come into the category of ‘not only do we think that they are being done’ but ‘they must seen to be done’ for everyone’s benefit, and kept up to date regularly. We all want our church to be a safe place where everyone, young and old, can feel at home and safe. So I am pleased to assure you that all the PCC members are working to that aim. I have no magic answer to these problems, but can only conclude that if you notice anything or anyone that appears to you to be “not quite right” - share it with someone, do not think that it is not worth bothering about, between you it can be dealt with and it is better to be Safe than Sorry. (there are contact details in church) As mentioned previously we have the church AGM coming up (April 22nd 10.30am in church) - that is a forum where can you hear the latest reports or express any views, or even join the “Team” And so being in the period of Lent, we soon approach the festival of Easter. Despite the continuing vacancy for a Team Rector, there will be the usual services; Reading of the Passion story on Friday 6th April and Easter Family Communion service on Sunday 1st April – there are other services in the Team churches.
