I thought I was above the teachers, I thought I was above the law. School was boring, it didn’t make sense to me—we didn’t connect, I was not interested. I went to school for the women, gym, and lunch. I was not there for the books or learning, I didn’t have time for that. Before Youthbuild I was gang-bangin’, drinkin’ heavy, living day to day, not looking into the future, being out there, being destructive. I looked at my life like Jesse James, and I didn’t think I would make it to 21. Youthbuild taught you how to express yourself, look up words in the dictionary. They taught you to be a leader.They taught me how to take care of my family. They taught me a lot. In the school part they didn’t do the same old book thing, they used one-on-one learning, pick your brain, they go over it with you until you get it right—it wasn’t a boring process—it was more like a friend helping you get up on a horse and learning how to ride it. If there wasn’t a program like Youthbuild, I’d probably be in the penitentiary serving life or something. If I didn’t have my GED, I’d probably be going from job to job. I probably wouldn’t have my family with me—it would look pret- ty gloomy. Once you’ve been part of Youthbuild it stays with you the rest of your life. It’s the best thing I’ve ever come upon. I hope they keep Youthbuild going and spread it all across the United States. Youthbuild was the only one that prepared me for life.” —Eric Clark, graduate,YouthBuild McLean County Preface Education at a Youthbuild Program is one of a series of handbooks developed by YouthBuild USA under contract with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to assist individuals and organizations in operating Youthbuild programs in their communities. These handbooks, covering education, counseling, construction, leadership development, and graduate resources are thematically linked, so that, taken together, they provide a detailed and compre- hensive guide to implementing an effective Youthbuild program. The handbooks supplement the Youthbuild Program Manual which provides an overview of the Youthbuild program and its components. Education at a Youthbuild Program represents the compilation and distillation of over 15 years of Youthbuild experience in the field. Additional publications and materials are also available from YouthBuild USA. The purpose of this handbook is to provide a useful guide to both new and experienced programs, derived from actual experience in Youthbuild programs.     Big Brother Mouse Annual Report, 2015 Greetings from Laos! I’d like to start off with some news that made us all proud: Big Brother Mouse is one of two organizations worldwide that was selected to receive the prestigious IBBY-Asahi Reading Promo- tion Award from the International Board on Books for Young People. This comes with a $10,000 prize and they’ll fly two of us to Auckland in New Zealand, all expenses paid, to receive the award. Big Brother Mouse turns 10 this year. It was in June 2006 that I applied for and received a business license, then a publishing license. That month we opened our first office. During that time we’ve traveled to thousands of schools and villages in Laos, but not often abroad, and rarely have we had opportunities to meet others who are particularly focused on books for children and young people. So we are very much looking forward to IBBY congress in New Zealand, and we feel invigorated by the recognition. This past year saw a change in our focus: From publishing more books, to seeing that our daily SSR program (Sustained Silent Reading) takes root, works well, and generates word of mouth among teachers and educators that, “Look, it really does work, if we just give children some ap- pealing books, and time to read!” And while it won’t bear fruit for a while, we began and almost finished construction of our new Learning Center & Discovery World.     Big Brother Mouse Annual Report, 2012 Friends: Seven years ago, I was a student in my last year at Teacher Training College in Luang Prabang. There were no Big Brother Mouse books, and nobody had ever heard of book parties. If you found an easy book to show to a child in a rural village, probably they could read it but very slowly, often sounding out each word, because they had so little practice reading. If you got the child enthused about reading, it wouldn’t have done much good, because there weren’t enough books to sustain that enthusiasm. Today, all that is changing, because of your support. Thank you! Our 200th book came off the press this week. It’s a very special book, intended for villages where we’ve set up reading rooms. With pictures and short excerpts, it introduces them to more than 100 other books. Books are still a new thing for families in rural Laos. They don’t naturally know all the benefits they can get from the reading room. Families will each have their own copy of this new book. They can spend many hours reading it together; then get more books from the reading room. The photo shows me with my wife Kham, and our daughter Neri. She is 20 months old and already loves books; she’s pointing to a picture of a ball, and saying the word “ball” in Lao. Rosenfelt, Women’s Studies, & Professor Martha Nell Smith, English During the 1970s and the 1980s, lesbian-feminists created a vibrant lesbian print culture, participating in the creation, production, and distribution of books, chapbooks, journals, newspapers, and other printed materials. This extraordinary output of creative material provides a rich archive for new insights about the Women’s Liberation Movement (WLM), gay liberation (the LGBT movement), and recent U.S. social history. In The Whole Naked Truth of Our Lives, I construct and analyze historical narratives of lesbian-feminist publishers in the United States between 1969 and 1989. Interdisciplinary in its conception, design, and execution, The Whole Naked Truth of Our Lives is the only sustained examination of lesbian print culture during the 1970s and 1980s; it extends the work of Simone Murray on feminist print culture in the United Kingdom as well as the work of literary scholars Kim Whitehead, Kate Adams, Trysh Travis, Bonnie Zimmerman, and Martha Vicinus, and historians Martin Meeker, Marcia Gallo, Rodger Streitmatter, Abe Peck, John McMillian, and Peter Richardson. From archival material, including correspondence, publishing ephemera such as flyers and catalogues, and meeting notes, oral history interviews, and published books, I assemble a history of lesbian-feminist publishing that challenges fundamental ideas about the WLM, gay liberation, and U.S. social history as well as remapping the contours of current historical and literary narratives. In the excitement of the WLM, multiple feminist practices expressed exuberant possibilities for a feminist revolution.

In particular, my project compares the production and reception of atrocity narratives across three distinct, post-WWII discourses: 1) Holocaust studies, 2) the modern human rights movement, and 3) international criminal law. Each discourse, I argue, sets formal limits on individual testimonies in order to regulate their function institutionally, directing not only which testimonies are read but how those accounts should be read. As a result, testimonies become generic. We see this demonstrated by the emergence of identifiable genres such as Holocaust literature and human rights literature, and the successful “passing” of faked accounts in each discourse.
