Each Leg consists in: a Start, a few Intermediary Points (contests chores and tasks), a Waypoint (that will be used to adjust the lengths of the Leg to the weather) end a Finish (where teams are given a chance to rest and resupply before the next Start). – Book 2 – page 75 Winning the contests at the Intermediary Points is awarded with comfort and supply prizes. The first team to arrive at a Waypoint is a have to complete the Daily Task and different contests. First Team to finish a Leg is granted immunity. Copyright Andrei Ionescu 12 DEFINITIONS:

• Sailing Yacht: A vessel using sails and wind as the main propulsion method, but also having a backup diesel engine. In our case we will focus on sloops, with one mast and 2 sails.

• LEG: a segment of a voyage between two waypoints • RIB: Rigid Inflatable Boat – a motor vessel that will be used during quests and other moments near the shore; • Quest: the trip to a point, the search for an answer / object / challenge and the return to protected waters • Protected Waters: An area of water that remains relatively calm because it is surrounded by land and/or reefs; these areas are used for anchoring, mooring or docking because the water is calm with no waves. In our case the term will cover all areas where a Leg will start or finish. In some cases some quests will also take place in such areas.

• Monohull: A monohull is a type of boat having only one hull, unlike multihulled boats which can have two or more individual hulls connected to one another.

• Catamaran: A catamaran is a multi-hulled watercraft featuring two parallel hulls of equal size. It is a geometry-stabilized craft, deriving its stability from its wide beam, rather than from a ballasted keel as with a monohull sailboat.

• On Watch: Every crew-member has a 3 hours watch duty. When his turn comes. At any given time there will be 2 crewmen on watch.

• Dinghy: small inflatable rowing / motor boat used in sheltered waters to transport passengers and freight. • Skipper: the captain, the person who steers a sailboat or is in charge of giving directions to the other people on the boat. • Draft: The draft of a ship's hull is the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel). The draft determines the minimum depth of water a ship or boat can safely navigate.

• HOT and COLD TESTIMONIALS: testimonials taken while on duty and at the end of each LEG. Copyright Andrei Ionescu

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 15 The Sailing Yachts – Description and Options For this programme there will be 3 sailing yachts involved, mono-hulls or catamarans with length between 40 and 50 feet (12 to 16m) recommended. These vessels can be quite complex in design, as they need a balance between docile handling qualities, interior space, good light-wind performance and on-board comfort. The huge range of such craft, from dozens of builders worldwide, makes it hard to give a single illustrative description. However, our best options are single-masted Bermuda rigged sloops / catamarans, with a single fore-sail of the jib or Genoa type and a single mainsail. Spinnaker sails, are optional and the skipper will decide in each case for down-wind use. These types are often chosen as family vessels, so there is no real danger for the crew. Such a vessel will usually have several cabins below deck. Typically there will be three / four double-berth cabins; a single large saloon with galley, seating and navigation equipment; and a "head" consisting of a toilet and shower-room. The interior is often finished in wood panelling, with plenty of storage space. Cruisers are quite capable of taking on long-range passages of many thousands of miles. Such boats have a cruising speed upwards of 6 knots. This basic design is typical of the standard types produced by the major yacht-builders.

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 16 1.3 EPISODES, DURATION AND PLOT - There will be 16, 1 hour episodes; each Episode except the first and the last will be composed of 3 ACTS: Act One: The Departure All the vessels will leave from the same place (Marina / Anchoring / Port). Before leaving there will be a short contest that will decide the start order / who leaves first. They will receive some extra bonuses and supply depending the results on their previous leg (they can use the Gold Coins they have received at the end of the previous leg). They will be filmed form shore, air and / or other Boats. Act Two: Navigation and Quests On the large sea they can receive on Radio the Quests for that leg. All Quests will be set on the sea and will involve fishing / treasure hunting / diving / going ashore etc. All tests should focus on the authenticity aspect and must be normal, although extreme sailing activities. All the quests will join all boats and contestants in the same place; the arrival times will be recorded and will be taken into account at the end of the leg. All the Quests will be between crews and/or crew members. They will grant the winner crew Gold Coins (exchangeable for diesel, fishing gear, swimming and snorkeling equipment, etc…), and for the members an Immunity Cap which can be used only once during that LEG. The duration of a leg is between 24 and 48 hours. The time between legs various form 4 to 12 hours. Crewmen / navigators must work together, adjust to each other personality and resolve the clashes that may appear and work together to win each leg. Act Three: Protected waters / The Leg End / The Arrival At the end of every leg / episode the vessels will reach the destination (a marina / an anchoring point). Here the last vessel to arrive will lose a member. When it gets down to 3 members, the vessel on the second place will have to donate one of her crew so that at any point on all vessels there will be at least 3 persons. At the end of every leg each boat will receive some Gold Coins depending on their place for supply and commodity goods.

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 17 INTRIGUE: 18 strangers have to sail the seas. The length of the expedition is up to one month, and at the start we will have in 3 competing sailing yachts. PLOT: The crewmen / navigators must navigate for up to one month in order to reach the destinations in difficult conditions, take watch day and night and live on board for all the period. REWARD: The winner will get the prize in money (prize and the CG remaining) and fame. AYE AYE CAPTAIN! is composed of at least 16 TV episodes. The duration of each episode will be between 40 and 90 minutes. It combines 3 elements that will attract viewers to watch and follow the events: the drama as it unfolds with the development of the relations between contestants; the trip presented also as a travel journal (beaches, sea flora and fauna, landmarks etc.); the sea with all its conditions and weather. NOTES: - this is not a studio show, there are no artificial conditions. The sea cannot be tainted and controlled. It is unpredictable, authentic and the conditions are always changing. - for safety reason, logistics and for panorama purposes, the track will follow the coast line for most of the time. The programme is composed of minimum 15 legs, each different in terms of landmarks, weather, tasks, length etc. We are talking about a fleet of 3 sailing Yachts, and they must have a fleet Commander (host) who will interact with the crews during legs, quests, start and finish. While navigating, the crew will establish responsibilities (cleaning, fishing, cooking and serving table) and they will actively take part in navigation (rising sails, staying on watch, helm etc.). At the end of each leg the Episodes climaxes with the intense drama of Walking The Plank, after being judged by his crewmen. The crewman / navigator that is voted to leave, have to walk a symbolic plank and jump in the water. In case of equality the skipper will a vote.

It is a fantasy for many and a stamina test for the contestants. The first episode will point out the dangers, the hard work, information about the legs and landmarks. There will be presented some safety rules, navigation information and jobs that will be demanded. This will be a difficult, long and the most exhausting leg. A sailing Boat has 4 area of interests: - THE COCKPIT – outdoor, the stern part of the boat where we have the helm, the sitting places navigation instruments, winches etc. Here is the place where the contestants will have the watch rounds; - THE BOW – outdoor, the area in front of the mast. Here we have cabin hatches and a good place to take a sunbath; - THE SALOON – indoor area with sofas, kitchen, table and cabinets. - THE SLEEPING QUARTERS – indoor areas

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 19 1.5 BUILDING A CREW The navigators / crew: 9 men and 9 women. The 3 teams are built from the 18 contestants by name drawing separately men and women. The appeal of the show consists in the following: • The human behavior in face of exhaustion; • The personal and group development; • Human relation development; and leadership; The production team will focus on reactions and personalities. There are intimate moments during the watch rounds. All watch rounds are composed of 2 contestants (one at helm and the other on watch). One 3 hours round is composed of 2 periods: 1h30’ watch and 1h30’ watch. During this moments the audience will find out what the contestants are thinking, gossip, personal information and team secrets. This moments makes the programme more appealing, interesting and creates an easy to follow storyline. This moment can be recorded as HOT Testimonials. Contests examples and description:  CONTEST 0 – decides the start order O Climb the mast (Individual contest example) O Rowing contest (Team contest example)  CONTEST 1 – daily task – the goal is to reach first the waypoint; there will be 3 buoys: YELLOW (grants 50 Gold Coins), GREEN (grants 25 Gold Coins) and PINK (grants 10 Gold Coins) – each Buoy will contain the clue that will guide them to the finish of the LEG.  CONTEST 2 – the first 2 yachts that reach the finish line are immune;  CONTEST 3 – 1 crew member exclusion / donation – the last boat that finishes a LEG will lose one contestant by challenge or / and vote. Copyright Andrei Ionescu

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 20 1.6 NAVIGATORS SELECTION and REGIONAL ASPECTS This Guide Book will also cover some aspects and recommendation for the Contestants selection, with the purpose of insuring a smooth production with reduced difficulties. The selection will have to be made considering a few aspects in advance: • they must know to swim; • psychological screening reduces the chance of contestants pulling out at a difficult moment; • making sure the contestants know what they are letting themselves in; • medical and psychological evaluation and safety; • there is always a risk, but we have to establish how much is acceptable and to evaluate it.

Of course there will be moral and legal dilemmas that cannot be covered in the present Guide Book, because they depends on the following factors: • broadcaster individuality; • local and regional ethic code; • how much should be filmed and how much to show; • because the show is reality in a controlled setting in a uncontrolled environment probably it is best to show more, but to what extent is opened to debate. Copyright Andrei Ionescu

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 21 1.7 THE HOST The host can lift the show / programme to a high ratings entertainment format. He / She provides viewers with a user friendly window to our three sailing yachts universe, into the contestants mind and translate their actions and reactions. The Host is not a simple moderator, he is also a judge, he explains the rules of the game, follows the plot, presents and explains to the public the weekly strategies and movements of the contestants. The Host will spend some time on each boat during each leg and will channel the crewmen into revealing their true thoughts and feelings. The Host is the commander of the fleet, he/she applies the decisions, and at the end of each episode will dramatically inform the audience and crew regarding who will walk the plank and will be sent home. The Host should manifest parenting skills, and must be viewed as a father figure by the contestants. The relationship with the crew should start to develop from the beginning. He/she will be involved in the team selection and can modify the selection in the benefit of the contestants so that a relationship based on thrust will start to cultivate. During the development of the show, the relationship between the host and the crews must develop, and he/she must show them signs of clemency, understanding and support. The purpose is to transform the host into the most trusted person involved in the programme; the navigators will come to him/her with questions, awaiting explanations and good news. The Host will present the legs, the quests and the rules that are to be followed. In all aspects He/she is the highest authority in all aspects regarding the show, and his/hers instructions are not ever to be questioned. The Host should exhibit the following qualities: cunning spirit, intelligence, integrity, fairness and to understanding. As the Host is a public figure he/she must be an impartial persons, with no extreme moral orientation. As the moral of the contestants will be sometimes pretty low, the Host will become a support for them, using humour and empathy to draw their attention form the hardness of life on a boat. Copyright Andrei Ionescu

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 22 After all, most of the responsibility of performance of the navigators rests on the hosts shoulders, and are times when the entire production will depend on his/hers skills and image. If we have to resume all the qualities a good Host should have, we can enumerate the following: • he/she must stand similar trials as the contestants, but only on short terms; • the crew members must trust him/hers completely; • must sincerely show respect and empathy for the crew and their problems; • especially because it is very hard for the contestants, cruelty is not attractive; • while on board the yachts he/she will endure the same conditions as the crew members; • he / she must be always be sunny and energetic, as he/she is a model for everyone.

1.8 THE SKIPPER This persons is involved in the development of the programme as: a team member for the contestants, the authority in case of danger and during the sailing tasks and finally he/ she is a constant presence that coordinates all activity onboard The jobs of the skippers job covers the navigational aspects related to safety, legal and seaworthy. On each vessel there will be 1 skipper. When recruiting them the production manager must consider the following aspects legal and casting for the wright personality. Copyright Andrei Ionescu

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 23 Legal aspects (must be licensed) and knowledge: • RYA Yacht master / Yacht Master category A / International Certificate of Competence – depending on the area; • Radio Operator Certificate / GMDSS-LRC (General Maritime Distress Safety System Long Range Certificate); • First aid certificate knowledge; • Basic broadcast function adapted to the system installed by the production team on each vessel (they must assist the on-board video operator);

Show Support - appeal and charisma because they will be active persons on-board: • they will share the life on-board with the crew; • they must be optimistic persons and they must have humour; • they are a support for the crew and should show reliability; • will coordinate the life on board and keep in touch with the Host and production manager; • they will get involved as little as possible, in the activities of the crew, and only on aspects of navigation and safety;

• they will have separate quarters and supply; Copyright Andrei Ionescu

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 24 1.9 THE CREW / CONTESTANTS An inspired crew selection is the most important goal for a successful show. Choose the wrong people and a great programme can turn into a failure. This part is just preview and later in the implementation of the show, we will discuss and cover most of the major approaches. This should be a serial drama on television that examines the lives of the characters, focusing on intellect, adaptation to environment, emotional relationships.

• Choose leaders and losers; • There should be a permanent struggle between different personalities:  The Good, The Bad, The Beautiful and The Ugly;  The Team Worker and the Selfish;  The Hard Worker and The Indolent;  Coherent vs Irrational;

• The quests must challenge both intelligence and strength; • There must be persons with different types: religion, sexual orientation, race, social interests. Diversity is the goal. 1.9 LEGAL ASPECTS All potential participants will be informed even before casting about the programme. The Production team must be sure that all contestants have received, read, assumed and signed the Rules and disclaimers. The set of Rules are subjected to changes due to regional, local and legal rations.

STARTING POINT – the place marina / anchorage where the yachts are moored before leaving for the Start Line:  Marina – yacht harbour that provides berths for boats and utilities (fresh water, electricity, fuel, repairs and stores);  Docks & harbours – concrete construction where a yacht can dock without utilities;  Anchorage – an area protected from waves where the yachts can lay anchor and spend time; there are no utilities and to reach the shote the contestants must use the dinghies provided on every yacht. The Starting Points will chosen to provide the viewer with an attractive area, landmarks and interesting scenery.

. FINISH AREA – same places as the Starting Point

. WAYPOINT – a designated sets of coordinates where the sailing yachts must reach.  The Starting Point, the Finishing Point and the Waypoint are generating a triangle;  Depending on weather the Waypoint will be positioned so that the leg will be adapted to the distance the yachts can cover depending on the weather and timelines. . LENGTH – the distance the sailing yachts will navigate during one leg can be calculated by adding the distance from the Start Point to the Waypoint with the one from the Waypoint to the Finish.

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 51 . SPECIAL AREA  Marine protected areas – special navigation rules applies  No anchorage areas  Traffic Separation Schemes – ex. Near harbours / straights  Special area – Danube, Bosporus, Dardanelle Straight (sail are not allowed).

. WEATHER – is an important tool and can be a stress factor. The wind speed, direction, waves can determine the distance that we can cover during a leg. For safety reasons the contest will be put on hold if the sea is over 7 Beaufort Scale (as presented in the next page).  The general producer should select the area according to the weather patterns, local characteristics etc.  A navigation consultant and a weather specialist should be involved in the production team from the beginning.  The design of the Leg must always evaluate and compensate the risk factor represented by the weather.  Keep in mind that the contestants and the technical crew and the rest of the production team can be affected by seasick, so both casting and recruitment must evaluate the motion sickness of the candidates.  Special equipment for rain and cold must be covered in the budget.

. EQUIPMENT – the crew will dress casual, but in case of bad weather they must be provided with appropriate gear.  Sun Protection – because the sailing yachts will not be provided with bimini top and sprayhood sun blocks must be provided.  Storm equipment – caps, weatherproof jackets and trousers, temperature adapted layers etc.

A. Route architecture  Route Selection must take into consideration the following:  The target audience must know and enjoy the landmarks along the route and rediscover them;  The route will visit places the viewers know and have memories of, but surprise them with a new details:  Relief difference is a plus for every location for broadcast material quality;  Easy access from the shore;  Route length (total distance):  the formula to calculate the recommended route is the following: RRL = SWC X 10 X (EN – 4) RRL = recommended route for a show SWC = Speed in worth weather condition 10 = 10 hours navigation daily EN = number of episodes in the show 4 = 4 episodes to take bad weather into account and the first and the last episodes;  in different areas the route length can be increased if the following conditions are followed:  Weather pattern (temperate vs tropical, ocean vs small sea, etc.);  Local winds (Alisio / Levant / Meltemi (Etesian) / Bora etc.)  Height, direction and length of the waves (in straights and areas protected by land there will be small waves.

MARINA  be in protected waters (the sailing yachts must be stable and the waves should be minimum);  have place to accommodate the number of yachts active in the show;  must be a destination itself, but also to grant us access to other pointe of interest;  have specific services (fuel, fresh water, power supply etc.);  have at least one landmark or a point of interest in the vicinity;  be accessible for the ground team. DOCK  be in protected waters (the sailing yachts must be stable and the waves should be minimum);  have a story to tell (a palace by the shore of Bosporus / a river shore / a shipyard for wooden boats / etc.);  have at least one landmark or a point of interest in the vicinity;  be accessible for the ground team. ANCHORAGE  be in protected waters (the sailing yachts must be stable and the waves should be minimum);  be close to the shore (so the team may reach the land if it is in the interest of the Show);  have at least one landmark or a point of interest in the vicinity;  be accessible for the ground team.

They leave Greece with 3 sailing yachts, compete for 3 weeks off the seas to return home. The Vessels will be sailed by the competitors and they will have clear tasks and objectives along the route. Main focus of the show will be on: the interaction of characters and personalities, action (on boats, beaches, bays, seas, cities, etc.), personal development of the crew • Competitors can be selected from either local stars, or the general public depending on target segmentation. • FORMAT - 3 similar yachts at start, 1 sailing yacht for the Host. • Each Sailing Yacht of the competition will be 6 foreigners, 1 skipper. • They will navigate using sails, lacking the usual comfort, crowded, having to solve the real problems that appear at sea. • Usually at each end of the stage / episode a member will be removed. • All chores and work will be natural for an adventure with limited resources. In general, the contests and issues that will need to be resolved will naturally occur, or generated by the production team. • The filmed material will be captured as discreetly as possible in order to preserve the realism of the show.

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 75 EPISODES, DURATION and PILOT  The shooting will generate about 17 / 18 episodes of 120 minutes;  Each Episode will overlap on a LEG ~ 24 hours of navigation: START - INTEREST POINT 1 (Marina, anchor, port) – WAYPOINT – marked with a buoy (a fixed point depending on weather and production needs) - INTEREST POINT 2 - FINISH then mooring in Marina, anchorage or port.  Each episode will have 2 sequences of 60 minutes: • START - INT. POINT 1 - WAYPOINT • WAYPOINT - INT. POINT 2 – FINISH

MOMENTS and MECHANISMS "Walk The Plank" - At the end of the episode a competitor will be eliminated; "Immunity on the boat" - the first 2 yachts at the end of the Leg; "Skipper immunity" - each skipper has the right to save an important crew member once; "Waypoint" - a GPS point where all yachts have to go on their way to finish. Here competitors will have tasks and competitions; "Transfer" - a crew member may be transferred; “Ghost Crew" - eliminated members that will appear at key moments of the show; "Doubloon" - the currency of the show;

An extinct volcano constitutes two-thirds of Aegina. The northern and western sides consist of stony but fertile plains, which are well cultivated and produce luxuriant crops of grain, with some cotton, vines, almonds, olives and figs,[2] but the most characteristic crop of Aegina today (2000s) is pistachio. Economically, the sponge fisheries are of notable importance. The southern volcanic part of the island is rugged and mountainous, and largely barren. Its highest rise is the conical Mount Oros (531 m) in the south. Temple of Aphaea, Monastery of Agios Nectarios, Ioannis Kapodistrias (1776–1831), Temple of Zeus Hellanios,

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 83 Agistri - There are only three settlements on Agistri - Milos (Megalochori), Skala and Limenaria. Milos (pop. 566) is the main village where the majority of the Greek population of the island lives. Skala (pop. 448) is a twenty-minute walk from Milos along the coastal road. Skala is where most of the tourist facilities and hotels are. Limenaria (pop. 128) is a very small village on the other side of the island with very little tourism. The island's population is 1,142 inhabitants according to the 2011 Greek census. Its land area is 13.367 km2 (5.161 sq mi)

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 86 Gyaros is an arid and unpopulated Greek island in the northern Cyclades near the islands of Andros and Tinos, with an area of 23 square kilometres (9 sq mi). This and other small islands of the served as places of exile for important persons in the early Roman empire. The extremity of its desolation was proverbial among Roman authors, such as Tacitus and Juvenal. It was a place of exile for leftist political dissidents in Greece from 1948 until 1974. At least 22,000 people were exiled or imprisoned on the island during that time.[1] It is an island of great ecological importance as it hosts the largest population of monk seal in the Mediterranean

Copyright Andrei Ionescu 87 Mikonos - There are 10,134 inhabitants (2011 census), most of whom live in the largest town, Mykonos, which lies on the west coast. The town is also known as Chora (i.e. the Town in Greek, following the common practice in Greece when the name of the island itself is the same as the name of the principal town).

Mykonos's nickname is "The Island of the Winds".[2][3] Tourism is a major industry and Mykonos is known for its vibrant nightlife and has many establishments catering for the LGBT community.

The island has a castle (the kastro) that dates from the Venetian occupation (13th to 15th centuries), a Byzantine monastery (the Monastery of Saint George), the grave of English poet Rupert Brooke in an olive grove by the road leading to Tris Boukes harbour. There are many beaches on the coast. The island has its own breed of Skyrian ponies.

The mountain Itamos or Dragoudelis is in the center of the peninsula. Amongst the many places in Sithonia is the ancient city, the castle and the church of Agios Athanasios in , the windmills in Sikia and the 16th century church in Nikiti. Porto Koufo, is the largest natural harbor in Greece, which is mentioned by Thucydides as "hollow harbor"; it appears to be the fishing spot in the area.

South, from the harbors exit there is Kartalia, the most southern part of Sithonia, a very impressive area which puts its visitors under a spell with its rocky secluded beaches. The beaches of Azapiko, Tristinika, Korakas, Marathias, Kalamitsi, and Kriaritsi are in the area. All the villages cover the peninsula mainly in the central and the southern portions.

In the middle of Sithonia peninsula, near the village of Neos Marmaras, is the holiday resort of Porto Carras; the place of the 2003 European Union leaders' Summit. The landscape is covered with vineyards, forests, grasslands, shrubland and mountains.
