UNITED STATES LINE-OF-DUTY DEATH REPORT March 2020

The monthly United States Line-of-Duty Deaths Report is a joint publication of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP). IACP and ODMP are committed to honoring fallen law enforcement officers while also raising awareness about line-of-duty deaths, including related trends and causal factors.

GUNFIRE

Police Officer Brent Scrimshire (Hot Springs Police Department, Arizona) was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop. During the traffic stop, Officer Scrimshire and a subject in the vehicle exchanged gunfire and both sustained gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a local hospital where Officer Scrimshire succumbed to his wounds.

Sergeant James R. O'Connor, IV (Philadelphia Police Department, Pennsylvania) was shot and killed during an early morning SWAT team operation to arrest a homicide suspect. Sergeant O’Connor was struck in an area not protected by his vest and later died at the hospital from his wounds. Officer Christopher Walsh (Springfield Police Department, Missouri) was shot and killed while he and another officer confronted an active shooter at a convenience store. Officer Walsh passed from injuries at a nearby hospital.

Sergeant Ben Jenkins (Nevada Highway Patrol) was shot and killed when he stopped to assist a disabled motorist. The subject fatally shot Sergeant Jenkins, then stole his uniform and patrol car. The subject was later apprehended following an extensive manhunt.

Commander Greg Carnicle (Phoenix Police Department, Arizona) was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call at a local apartment complex. Commander Carnicle and two other officers were in the home speaking with the occupants when a male occupant suddenly drew a gun and opened fire, wounding all three officers. They were taken to a local hospital where Commander Carncile later succumbed to his wounds. AUTO RELATED

Deputy Sheriff Kenterrous Taylor (Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia) died in a single-vehicle crash while responding to a burglary in progress call. His patrol car left the roadway, struck a wall, and overturned several times before ejecting him from the vehicle resulting in fatal injuries.

Senior Deputy Scott Korzilius (Travis County Sheriff's Office, Texas) was killed in a vehicle crash when an oncoming vehicle crossed into his travel lane and struck his unmarked patrol car. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Corrections Officer Amanda De Leon (Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Texas) was killed in a highway vehicle crash while traveling to a specialty inmate unit for an assignment. Her vehicle left the roadway during a period of rain and overturned.

Police Officer Kaia Grant (Springdale Police Department, Ohio) was killed when she was intentionally struck by a vehicle during a pursuit of an armed, suicidal suspect. Officer Grant was taken to a nearby hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Trooper Justin Schaffer (Washington State Patrol) was struck and killed by a fleeing vehicle while he attempted to deploy stop sticks along an interstate.

Trooper Nolan Sanders (North Carolina Highway Patrol) was killed in a single-vehicle crash after his patrol car left the roadway and struck a concrete barrier. Trooper Sanders suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

COVID-19 and Medical-Related Causes

Captain Jonathan Parnell (Detroit Police Department, Michigan) died as a result of contracting COVID-19 while on duty.

Reserve Captain Raymond Boseman (New Orleans Police Department, Louisiana) died as a result of contracting COVID-19 from presumed exposure during Mardi Gras-related patrolling activities.

Sheriff Kirk Corker (Hutchinson County Sheriff’s Office, Texas) suffered a fatal heart attack while in route to a call regarding violations of COVID-19 social distancing orders. Sheriff Corker’s vehicle left the roadway when the heart attack occurred, and he was found approximately two hours later by fellow deputies.

Detective Marylou Armer (Santa Rosa Police Department, California) died as a result of contracting COVID-19 during her duties as a domestic violence detective, which required her to visit several high-risk locations.

Deputy Sheriff Sypraseuth Phouangphrachanh (Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, North Carolina) died as a result of contracting COVID-19 while on duty as a school resource officer.
