Whilst walking around the lanes I have been amazed by the community spirit that 32 L'Ecluse exists in our parish. Have you seen John (pictured in the Gallery), for instance, who walks for two hours every day picking up litter from the hedgerows or one of the community support group who give up their time to do shopping or take parishioners to appointments? The parish exudes goodwill and long may it continue. With the weather improving I hope you are able to get out and about to enjoy the many good things that are right on our doorstep. The ‘Baby Jesus’ Pebbles ready planting of Jersey Royals is well under way, for distribution fields of daffodils are blooming, the trees are budding, the days are drawing out and the birds are singing! Spring is such a glorious time. It is a time of rebirth, new beginnings and fresh starts. It’s a time of growth, a time of beauty and most of all a time of life.

We give thanks for the passing of the winter months and coming through our ‘soft’ lockdown. Sadly, all the usual activities at Ebenezer were curtailed, but through the power of Facebook, the love we share with our Pickles communities continued online with Chaos at the Crib, craft activities and our weekly story time. Fortunately, we were able to squeeze in a social ‘Soup and Pud’ lunch at the end of October for the more senior members of our community. We also continued to share in worship through the Jersey Methodist Circuit YouTube channel and have enjoyed Zoom coffee mornings from the comfort of our own homes. Our Christmas craft team sprung into action and produced a lovely stained glass ‘Twelve Parishes of Christmas’ on YouTube and saw the Trinity contribution window with a candle decoration that was posted with a prayer card to about 40 of our on Christmas Eve? elderly Church members and special friends from our ‘Generations’ group just before Now we look forward to new beginnings that will awaken our spirits, warm Christmas, bringing rays of light and hope as we passed through the shortest day. PARISH SENIOR CITIZENS ‘3in1’CLUB Like many other organisations in 2020, Trinity 3 in 1 Senior Citizens Club has suffered greatly from not being able to meet for the regular meetings on the afternoons of the 1st Thursday in the month.

We met in January, and then on February 14th we had the most amazing 40th Anniversary celebration lunch at St Brelade’s Bay Hotel. After that we were all in the Covid Lockdown! However, the committee arranged to keep in regular contact by telephone with all of our members and that was a great success. In September things had eased a little, and with the kind generosity of Mrs Jennie le Sueur two small afternoon tea parties were held at her home, Le Carrefour in Trinity. As well as tea and cake there was much laughter and chat and a very good time was had by all. A Christmas lunch had been arranged at La Place Hotel for early December but this had been cancelled so the committee began Below, left and left above: Putting together to plan a Christmas tea party instead. This too had to be cancelled as the the Christmas gifts Above and top: September tea party Covid situation deteriorated quite rapidly at that time. Instead, Christmas gifts were sought and together with a Christmas card these were delivered by the committee to all 3 in 1 members. With the advent of the vaccine we are hoping that things will continue to improve and we can begin meeting again at the Parish Hall, sometime in 2021...sooner rather than later we hope. Defibrillator liberated at the Funded by the very supportive Skipton International, the Jersey Heart Support Group charity have liberated two Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) in the parish during 2020. As reported earlier the one at Bouley Bay is situated on the side of the toilet building and the one at Jersey Zoo is now next to the cash point machine.

A cardiac arrest can occur anytime and having a PAD mounted on the outside of a building so that it can be easily accessed could well be life saving. There are now 75 PADs dotted around the Island, 24 of which have been presented by the JHSG charity, with grateful support from private donations, fundraising and many considerate organisations.

PARISH 6th JERSEY 6th Trinity sections are back to Zoom for the first half of term, Covid has not stopped us! With the rising cases Jersey Scout Association suspended face-to-face scouting until further notice. To ensure our members are able to earn badges and feel some normality during this difficult time we are offering “Virtual Scouting”once again.

We are teaming up with our Manton sections to deliver sessions, our Beavers are learning to sew badges on their camp blankets, cooking marshmallows over a candle as well as constructing bird boxes. The cubs are going back to basics with knots and lashings and learning to make shortbread and write poems ready for Burns Night. Our thanks to Rev. Geoff Houghton FOR A FANTASTIC Christingle SERVICE via Zoom which was enjoyed by all. MIND JERSEY gave the scouts a talk on how to cope with the stress and difficulties of lockdown and exam pressures. Our interview with the Connetable went well and the scouts showed Philip all the new games and skits they had learnt over the term. Thank you, Philip for coming in and answering all their questions. One of our scouts at Trinity, Edgar Militis shaved his head for Hospice. Well done Edgar we are very proud of your selfless act. There is still time to sponsor him https://sponsors.jerseyhospicecare.com/edgar-militis... Do you have First Aid Knowledge, are you good with administration, handy in the kitchen or are you a DIY whizz? Can you just be there to support? We all have useful skills and you can volunteer to help in many ways. The satisfaction of being involved is immense and it can be as flexible as you wish the role to be. When Nick was four or five years old, he began "bashing out" notes on the piano and joined the many hundreds of children learning to play with ‘Aunty Vera’ in Trinity. Around the age of eighteen he was already deputy organist at Holy Trinity Church and then helped the Trinity WI to form a choir to sing at annual concerts which they produced. FEATURE The buck starts here Bad news seemed to dominate the headlines in 2020, Brexit, Megxit, the incarceration of Joe Exotic and of course the coronavirus pandemic. It was a difficult year for all of us. But it was also a year when community and family came together, when life slowed down and when local resources mattered.

It was a very opportunistic and busy year for Le Tacheron Farm. In early March our mill was not ready for commercial production, but an island wide flour shortage and call to arms from local shops made us accelerate our plans. We worked hard to get the mill up and running and by mid-month we were milling 3 times per week to help ease the shortage. We wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported us and other local producers during the pandemic. We also wanted to share an exciting new development at the farm, our latest product offering, Buckwheat flour. The name Buckwheat is a bit misleading as buckwheat is not a wheat or even a cereal, its more closely related to rhubarb. It’s a dark triangular seed that is rich in carbohydrates and proteins. It is used in the same way as other grains and can be ground into a fine flour so it's classed as a pseudo cereal. Unlike wheat it is totally gluten free and it has the highest free radical scavenging capability of all grains. Buckwheat is not very well known in the UK, but it is a very important crop in Asia and E. Europe. Products made from buckwheat include Japanese noodles (soba), but the use most people will be familiar with is French galettes which are made exclusively with buckwheat. It is superb in biscuits and pastries and can be used to make bread with other gluten free flours. Buckwheat is an excellent cover crop, which we also use as a weed suppresser and green manure to improve our soil. Unbelievably the seeds germinate in 3 days and within 2 weeks you can have leaves 3 inches wide that shade out weeds. Buckwheat comes into flower within 1 month of sowing and will continue to flower for up to 10 weeks. We planted some fields in late August that continued to produce flowers into November creating late season nectar for bees (and probably exceptional honey for someone). Many people suffer from gluten allergies or more commonly gluten intolerances, so we wanted to start Below: developing local flour products that address this issue. We ran a trial crop of Buckwheat over the summer and Buckwheat field in full bloom have successfully grown, harvested and milled the grain to produce a delicious flour (and some awesome Top: galettes). We will be planting a larger crop in the spring and bringing the product to market later this year! PARISH LIFE

Situated at the far end of Vallee des Vaux, L'Ecluse L'Ecluse is a Trinity property with A Trinity property with an an interesting history. Originally a granite farmhouse with the subsequent interesting past and present addition of a lock keeper's cottage – hence the name, it went on to become the home of three doctors, the childhood home of 'Superman' actor Henry Cavill and during the Occupation, it was commandeered by the Germans. With extensions and modernisation, L'Ecluse has evolved into a substantial property partially hidden by the surrounding woodland. Now the home of Rebeka Spears and her children, it will be familiar to many for the roadside stall at its entrance filled with homemade treats. The earliest picture of L'Ecluse, dated 1870, shows it as a farm surrounded by cotils. A detached cottage built in the grounds was accommodation for the lock keeper who would have been responsible for the sluice gate controlling the flow of water from the stream and pond to the nearby mill at the Harvest Barn. The pond is still there but slightly reduced in size and although the cottage was demolished, it was rebuilt in the 1990's on a site overlooking the stream. Between 1910 and 1930, dormer windows were added to the house and later a tower with a stairwell up to a roof garden. When ownership passed to Dr Philip Bentlif in 1935, he commissioned well-known local architect, Arthur Grayson the following year to design improvements to the property, then known as Beau Rivage. Work was undertaken by a Mr E R Egre and included changes to the roof and the installation of larger windows. A large 'Canadian' style build, clad in timber, elevated the property a further two floors. Work was completed in 1939 - a date imprinted on a surviving rainwater hopper. At that time, Beau Rivage was noted as being in St Helier although current records indicate that it is now the last property in Trinity before entering St Helier. During the Occupation, there was a strong German presence in the area with the adjoining lane being closed at the curfew time of 6 pm. The house was commandeered by the Germans and used as an officer’s Right middle: The Lockkeepers Cottage Right top: L'Ecluse has an elevated position on the side of the valley Right: Henry Cavill lived at L'Ecluse

FEATURE Pat Miller Renowned Trinity artist & teacher Many of us will have an etching by Pat Miller gracing our homes, no doubt because the portrayal of the subject is familiar. Trinity, its people and their activities, its traditional buildings and countryside, were a constant source of inspiration for her. Born in Wigton, a market town near Cockermouth, Pat studied art at Carlisle and Leeds before completing a Masters degree at the Slade School of Fine Arts at University College, London, where she met fellow student Michael Le Gros and formed a lifelong partnership with him.

Michael returned to Jersey to live at his family home La Profonde Rue in Trinity and to take up a teaching post at the . Pat followed him in 1959 to teach art at JCG and with his help in the planning, transformed the new studio at the school into a centre of excellence. Described as straightforward and fierce, with her purple jumpers and with long reddish hair, Pat Miller didn’t look like the other teachers. Supportive and encouraging, and generous in the time and care she took in mentoring her pupils in art and craft, she inspired many to undertake further education in art disciplines, and some a career in education. Angela Crowcroft, her former pupil, returned to teach as Pat’s assistant at JCG, and succeeded her as Head of Art in 1991 when Pat took early retirement due in part to the onset of arthritis in her hands. During her teaching career Pat only had the holidays to practice her own art. Her interest in etching, the medium for which she is best known, was prompted

Having a prodigious work ethic herself, Pat clearly felt an affinity with local people laboring on the land. Planting, cultivating and harvesting early potatoes in Rozel valley inspired several notable studies, and for which she evolved a distinctive elemental style. Her large and minutely observed etchings with a wide tonal range were printed by herself, usually in editions of 35. ‘Carmel Farm’ looking over Rozel valley with its intricate field patterns is a typical example. A charming TrinityCommunity feature was often to include local people whom she knew (the tiny figure in the Support Team background on Rozel hill is Jill Keogh taking her grandson Josh for a walk in his push chair), and more often or not (but The Connétable and Rector continue to be not in this case) a cat or two. PARISH LIFE

With Trinity Parish hall closed due to Coronavirus, it was a difficult task to find a suitable venue for the recent W.I. meeting, which was held before further restrictions were put in place. Ebenezer Chapel proved to be ideal with the chairs spaced well apart for a humorous and informative talk given by Steve Parkin, the manager of Maison des Landes. All Government guidelines were followed.

Forty years ago Elizabeth Ashton Edwards’ idea to open Maison des Landes Hotel, catering for disabled guests, became a reality. The daily tariff was then thirty shillings inclusive of meals, transport and entertainment. No-one could be more enthusiastic about his job than Steve Parkin, who has worked at the hotel for thirty one years working his way up from part time driver to manager. Many guests return annually with their carers and deserving locals are also invited to stay when rooms are available. It is run as a charitable trust set up by the Lions Club. On Remembrance Sunday Jean Cadin represented members when she laid their poppy wreath at the church lynch gate. The Federation chairman, Joy Thomson, also laid a wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of all Jersey W.I. members. Zoom meetings, an online quiz and tea parties have been held through the W.I. Island Federation and Trinity sent a virtual delegate to the Annual Council meeting. Lady Ann Dalton has kept in touch with Joy, the Federation chairman and thanked members for their hard work and kindness during this difficult period. The Federation Flower Arranging demonstration and the Trinity member’s Christmas lunch unfortunately had to be cancelled and the walking group have hung up their boots for a while. Below: Dawn, Jane and Nicky suitably distanced!

Nicky Noble, our parish secretary since 2002, and before that assistant parish secretary, has retired from the post. Her replacement, Jane Sappé took up the role in January and is still ably assisted by Dawn Le Quelenec. Nicky has not gone too far, mind you. She will now be working in the office upstairs as the Honorary Police Administrator. Jane brings lots of transferrable skills to her new role having spent 25 years in the legal profession and as a mother to two teenage boys! She is particularly good at IT matters and having lived in the parish for 21 years she is well acquainted with the community spirit that thrives in Trinity. Although at the time of writing the Parish Hall is closed to visitors Jane and Dawn are both on hand at the end of the phone to help parishioners with any advice or assistance they need pertaining to parish life. They are able to help with a wide range of issues, from loose cows in the lane, to renewing driving licences, rates and much See our range of Traditional, more.
