  • Chicago Wolves Game Notes CHICAGO at IOWA APRIL 12, 2019 7 P.M
2018-19 Chicago Wolves Game Notes CHICAGO AT IOWA APRIL 12, 2019 7 p.m. AHL TV 2018-19 POTENTIAL PLAYOFF OPPONENTS The Chicago Wolves have controlled their own fate when it comes to the postseason, clinching a playoff TALE OF THE TAPE spot on March 29 with a victory in Grand Rapids before securing the Central Division title for the third REGULAR-SEASON SERIES year in a row on April 6 with a win over Colorado. The only question mark now is the Wolves’ first-round 3-2-2-0 Iowa | 4-2-1-0 Chicago opponent. Six teams can still wind up as the No. 4 seed as no other team in the Central Division has claimed a spot in the race for the Calder Cup. Grand Rapids sits in second with 87 points with two games remaining and needs just one point to reach the postseason. Milwaukee’s 84 points are good for third and its magic number to clinch a playoff berth is four, but an overtime loss to Rockford on Tuesday put the Admirals in a vulnerable position with the 35-26-8-5 rest of the field so close on their heels. 43-21-5-4 LEADING SCORERS IN SERIES Iowa moved into fourth with 83 points, just one point back from Milwaukee, with a win over Grand Rapids on Wednesday. Manitoba is fifth with 81 points but has a game in hand over Milwaukee and Iowa as well IOWA CHICAGO as the tie-breaker with 35 regulation or overtime wins. Texas and Rockford are tied with 80 points and Skater G A Pts Skater G A Pts both have a magic number of eight, so both need to sweep their final two games and get a little help O’Reilly 0 5 5 Carr/Tynan 2 5 7 x Kloos 1 4 5 x Pirri 2 5 7 from others to move into a playoff spot.

Today’s News Clips June 7, 2018 Chicago Sun-Times Patrick Kane, 6 other Blackhawks set to play in Chicago summer hockey league Satchel Price June 6, 2018 Several Blackhawks players will be taking part in a new summer hockey league coming to Chicago in July. The Chicago Pro Hockey League announced its inaugural eight-game exhibition season Wednesday with planned participants including Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat, Nick Schmaltz and many others. Over 80 players from the NHL, AHL and ECHL are expected to be play in the games at MB Ice Arena, the new practice facility that the Hawks opened in January, as well as a large number of top amateurs from top college programs, junior teams and AAA programs. Kane and DeBrincat are set to play on the same team, continuing their partnership from Team USA’s run at the 2018 World Championships. Brandon Saad, Tommy Wingels and Ryan Hartman will also be teammates again, along with former Hawks forward Brandon Bollig. “The CPHL is a great opportunity for our Chicago-based players to participate in high-level games to supplement their summer training programs,” said Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman as part of the announcement. “I’m thrilled to see so many Chicago Blackhawks’ players involved, and also thrilled that our local hockey fans will be able to visit our new practice facility and see some great summer hockey.” The first game of the weekly CPHL season will be July 11 and tickets will be a delightfully cheap $5 each. There will also be games on July 18, July 25, Aug.

  • Concussion Business Is Booming, but Players Are Still Taking a Hit Public Awareness About the Dangers of Head Injuries to Athletes Is Growing
Concussion business is booming, but players are still taking a hit Public awareness about the dangers of head injuries to athletes is growing. But so far, the greatest beneficiaries of that awareness may be helmet manufacturers and private health clinics. New York Rangers enforcer Derek Boogaard, right, fights during a 2010 NHL game in Philadelphia. Boogaard died of an accidental drug and alcohol overdose in 2011, five months after a concussion ended his hockey career. A posthumous examination of his brain found he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy. (MATT SLOCUM / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE PHOTO) The Chicago Blackhawks' Brandon Bollig, left, dukes it out with Dwight King of the Los Angeles Kings during Game 7 of the Western Conference finals in the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2014. As NHL players have become larger and faster, the game has become more claustrophobic (NAM Y. HUH / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE PHOTO) Concussions have evolved from public awareness (Eric Lindros’s 1998 concussion, the first of six as a Flyer) to growing concern (parents and coaches lobbying the Greater Toronto Hockey League to ban checking at the single-A level) to alarm (the deaths of Derek Boogaard, Junior Seau et al.) to multiple lawsuits (former NFL players, former NHL players). The logical conclusion would be that it become a public health issue. It hasn’t, really. Instead it has become a thriving business. “Player safety is the new frontier for those hoping to make money in the sports business industry,” David Carter, executive director of the Sports Business Institute at the University of Southern California, told the Washington Post in 2013.
