Though we cannot celebrate with you in person, we are with you in spirit, and I speak for everyone at University of Maryland Global Campus when I say that it has been our honor to help you in the pursuit of your goals and your dreams. Today, you represent our greatest achievement, and we are proud to recognize and celebrate your success. I am also honored to offer a special salute to our active-duty servicemembers and veterans of the U.S. military who are graduating, along with the many medical personnel and first responders on the front lines of our current public health crisis. Your service to our country has earned you the respect and admiration of a grateful nation, and we are so pleased that you selected UMGC as your university of choice. We are deeply proud of all of you—proud of your achievements, proud of your growth and learning, and proud to welcome you to the ranks of UMGC alumni. Leak, PhD Interim President University of Maryland Global Campus Winter 2020 Speaker In November 2018, Angela Alsobrooks was elected as the eighth county executive for Prince George’s County and the first woman to hold the position. Her administration is committed to providing a world-class education system, safe communities, and a robust economy that creates jobs and opportunities for all and increases the commercial tax base to ensure that residents are provided with the services they deserve. THE HONORABLE During her first year in office, Alsobrooks led a government ANGELA that increased education funding, allowing reductions in ALSOBROOKS class size and support for almost 5,000 pre-K students. She COUNTY EXECUTIVE, submitted a budget that added personnel to agencies and PRINCE GEORGE’S upgraded technology across government to ensure efficient, COUNTY, MARYLAND effective service delivery to residents. She also created the Office of Veterans Affairs, the first of its kind in the state, to ensure that the county’s 60,000 veterans receive the resources they deserve. In 2010, Alsobrooks was elected to serve as the county’s state’s attorney, becoming the youngest person and the first woman to be elected to the office in Prince George’s County. As the county’s top law enforcement official, Alsobrooks played a key role in public safety and strove to carry out her responsibilities in a firm, fair, and consistent manner. She fought for additional resources to ensure that the office could appropriately support the needs of the community. She created a truancy reduction initiative that works with schools to keep kids on the right path and also started a program called Back on Track—Prince George’s, aimed at giving first-time, low-level, nonviolent felony drug dealers a second chance in the community. Under her leadership, prosecution rates rose across the board and remained steady during her tenure. A lifelong resident of Prince George’s County, Alsobrooks received her BA in Public Policy from Duke University and her JD from University of Maryland, Baltimore.
