The team captained by Rose Meltzer won the Spingold Knockout Teams by a large margin, defeat- ing the squad led by , 147–53. Playing with Meltzer, of Los Gatos CA, were Kyle Larsen of San Francisco, Lew Stansby of Castro Valley CA, Alan Sontag of Gaithersburg MD, Chip Martel of Davis CA and , also of Los Gatos CA. The Welland team included Brad Moss of New York, Marc Jacobus of Las Vegas, Fred Gitelman of Toronto, and Magnus Lindkvist and Peter Fredin of Sweden. For Meltzer, this victory is another feather in the cap for a squad that won the Transnational Teams in Bermuda and earned two second-place finishes in NABC events this year (including the , Flight A here in Anaheim). Meltzer’s win is significant historically as well, since the last time a woman was a member of the win- ning Spingold squad was 1963. In that year Edith Kemp (now Freilich) won, playing with Russ Arnold, Harold Harkavy, Alvin Roth, Cliff Russell and William Seamon. You’ve seen ’s byline many times dur- ing the past week, but this time his name is the head- line – “Rigal team scores victory in Mixed.” This event must be the story of the week. Microsoft head Bill Gates reached the finals on his first try. And Mel Colchamiro came off a Monday heart attack to finish second, only a fraction of a away from triumph. But back to the winners. Rigal was playing on the same team as his wife, three-time world champion . His other teammates were four-time world champion , two-time North American cham- pion Sylvia Moss, and two former Junior champions, Jeff Ferro and Alex Ornstein. Rigal’s score of 35.65 was just enough to edge Colchamiro (35.04), who rose all the way from a tie for 30th in the qualifying to second place. His team- mates were Janet Colchamiro, Betty Bloom, Steve Bloom, Kitty Munson and Steve Cooper. Rigal, who has made name for himself as a re- porter, an editor and a commentator, now can add star bridge player to his resume. This was his first North American championship – and it almost didn’t hap- pen. He and his wife had been having a terrible week – Mixed Board-a-Match Teams champions (top, l to r) Judi Radin, Alex Ornstein, Sue Picus; (bottom) Jeff Continued on page 3 Ferro, Sylvia Moss and Barry Rigal.
