The Hyundai World Cup Finals were held in Moscow, on September 5-6. The top archers in the 2019 season gathered to compete for the individual crowns of the year. There were no surprises in the names of the archers who climbed on top of the podium. KANG Chae Young (KOR) and Mike SCHOLESSER (NED) dominated the recurve women and compound men events, with Gold victories over Taipei’s TAN Ya-Ting and Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA), respectively. Daniel MUÑOZ (COL) claimed the Bronze medal after the Dutchman and the American. The greatest performances at the Finals were delivered by two archers from our continent. Sara LOPEZ (COL) and Brady ELLISON (USA) won their respective fifth Hyundai World Cup Finals titles. The Colombian, who had already won the Finals in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018, beat World Champion Natalia AVDEEVA (RUS) for the crown in Moscow, while ELLISON, also victorious in 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2016, defeated Italy’s Mauro NESPOLI. 3 Campeonato Mundial 3D / 3D World Championships El Campeonato Mundial de 3D se llevó a cabo en Lac La Biche, Canadá, del 2 al 7 de septiembre. The World Archery 3D Championships were held in Lac La Biche, Canada, on September 2-7. Two hundred and sixty-five archers competed, including ninety-five from six countries of the Americas: Argentina, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay and the United States. Our archers won the following medals: Luis ROSSI (URU) Silver Longbow Men Kenneth RIENAS (USA) Silver Instinctive Men Trudy DRYDEN (CAN) Bronze Instinctive Women Dewayne MARTIN (USA) Bronze Barebow Men Team Canada Silver Women Team Team USA Bronze Women Team Luis ROSSI’s Silver medal was the first ever won by Uruguay at a World Championships in any archery discipline. When he flew over to Canada, his expectations were to end up among the top ten archers. He ranked 6th in the qualification round, and went on to compete in Pool D, where he defeated Robin GARDEUR (FRA), and then the winner of Pool C Stein ANZJOEN (NOR). He beat first seed Giuliano FALETTI (ITA) in the semifinals to advance to the gold medal match, which he lost to Russia’s Mikhail PODDEVALIN. When interviewed by World Archery Americas, Luis said that Longbow is his passion. He makes his own arrows, and he finds lots of joy in doing so. It takes about a week for 5 him to prepare a dozen arrows. He first makes the shafts and sorts them out by spine and weight. When he finds twelve similar ones, he glues on the points and nocks and shoots the bare shafts looking to choose the ones that hit the target straight. Once he has identified the best dozen, he varnishes them and puts the fletching on them. Now they are ready for shooting. Luis lives in Paysandu, where a craftsman manufactures the Charrúa longbows. This is the brand that he uses. He has never competed with another type of bow but has started shooting a barebow to be able to compete at the Pan American Target Championships next year. SpecialOlympics.org 2017 World Games Athlete Stories More than 2,700 athletes from 107 countries will compete at the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria. Here are just a few of their stories, covering the seven Special Olympics regions around the world. AFRICA DIABATE HADIDIAH, COTE D’IVOIRE, FLOORBALL Diabate loves a challenge. That’s how she became of the few female judo athletes in Special Olympics Cote d’Ivoire – and one of the best. Now she is ready to lead Cote d'Ivoire's mostly female floorball team to their first World Games competition. Diabate used to attend a special education school, but her parents can no longer afford to send her. So these days, she’s learning all she can through her Special Olympics training, including communication and socialization skills. Her strength and stamina have surprised everyone, which is why her coach encouraged her to try the fast-paced team sport of floorball. Through sports, Diabate says she’s found new skills and confidence, plus she’s learned to communicate, cooperate and strategize with teammates. She’s also gained more physical strength racing up and down the field. The Cote d’Ivoire traditional floorball team has been training together for a year. The teammates are ready to take on Team Germany in their floorball first match-up in Austria. Diabate says, "My biggest dream is to return back home with the gold medal." 2 Special Olympics TEAM KENYA, FLOOR HOCKEY Kenya's only competitors in the 2017 World Games know the odds are stacked against them.
