Temple Ewell Says Goodbye to Gretel

After ten years of walking the streets of Temple Ewell, Lydden, Capel, Alkham and most recently River I just want you all to know that as from September 12th I will be leaving and taking on a new job in . I will still work for Kent police but in a different role.

Thank you to everyone who has made my ten years in this job very memorable. I have loved getting to know people and have been very lucky to have had the lovely villages that I have and have enjoyed being able to help resolve some issues that you might have been experiencing.

I live nearby so I dare say that I will still see people around, as soon as I know about a replacement I will of course let you all know. Thank you once again.

10 30th Annual Dover Festival Prom Concert

On Friday 7th July about 300 People packed into the Dover Town Hall, armed with their Union Jack flags, to enjoy an evening of music with a Viennese theme. The talented Proms Orchestra, all of whom had volunteered for this Charity event, and the combined choirs that formed the Proms Chorus were expertly led by conduc- tors Stephen Yarrow and Micheal Lewis. Following a selection of music from Strauss we were treated to a selection of songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical The Sound of Music. These were interposed with choral pieces performed by the accomplished Judith Smith.

The Proms chorus included many with association to Temple Ewell, our Editor, Jeanette Potts being one! The Players were well represented by Mike Brodie, Sheila Revell, Tonia Watts and more. The climax of the evening, in accordance with tradition, was the audience sharing in renditions of Jerusalem by William Blake, followed by Rule Britannia by Thomas Arne with Judith Smith performing an excellent Britannia and singing the first verse! Finally the ‘roof was raised’ by the combined voices of the audience and Proms Chorus, wonderfully supported by the Proms Orchestra, singing Land of Hope and Glory by A C Benson. And the flags well………the photo tells it all! Look out for next year's July Concert it's an evening not to be missed.

Dear Friends After twenty-six years it was very hard indeed to leave Temple Ewell and Lydden and we gound it quite emotionally exhausting. However, we shall never forget the kindness, affection and generosity of so many and whilst we will endeavour to write many personal ‘thank you’s’ this is just to express our deepest gratitude for the wonderful manner in which we were blessed on our way. Thank you so much. Fr Paul and Hilary

With Father Paul having now retired we are now in what is known as an interregnum (which means without a priest.) I think everyone at his Farewell Mass and at the gathering afterwards ensured he was given a good farewell after 26years of services to our Church and the parishes of Temple Ewell and Lydden. However the Wardens and our PCC are working hard on moving forward so that our Church remains available and services can continue. Many thanks Peter Austen (Church Warden)

Sunday Club

We will resume on Sunday 10th September after the summer holidays. We meet at 10.30am in the Millennium Hall. New members are welcome from the age of 3. The little ones may like a parent to stay a while but we are happy to enjoy their company by themselves.

Fr. Paul was thrilled with his gift from Sunday Club of a beautiful frame containing everyone’s picture. Needless to say we shall miss Fr. Paul but our worship will continue and our learnings of the way of Christ will be strong. We look forward to welcoming any new members.

------

Although July seems a long time ago, we must thank everyone who came to Lounge on the Lawn at Woodville Hall. We are so lucky to have such lovely grounds and generous hosts to enable us to have this event. Over £1000 was raised in the evening and this helps enormously with Church finances. Thanks again to everyone.

14 A LITTLE PIECE OF TEMPLE EWELL

What is the connection between a Public House outbuilding, a school room and an unemployment programme? The answer is Temple Ewell Baptist Church.

A cursory glance will reveal that there is not one building but three separate parts joined together. Each is on a different floor level and could therefore be described as High Church and Low Church. This two storey section may have originally been an outbuilding of the “George and Dragon” public house which was built before 1740, and had stables for which a groom was required. The present “George and Dragon” was rebuilt in 1904.

The middle section, now used to hold services, is built of flint walls. In the mid 1870’s Miss Caroline Fector provided the church with this room to meet in. Caroline was the spinster daughter of Mr John Minet Fector who owned Kearsney Manor. The Fectors were of Huguenot descent. Caroline’s brother was a Member of Parliament for Dover. Her grandfather, Peter Fector, purchased the old Baptist meeting house in in 1804 and gave it to the Baptist Church.

Caroline continued in the family tradition, and gave the Mission Room to the Baptist Church in1883. The gift was on condition that the doctrine taught should be that taught by C.H.Spurgeon, the great christian preacher.

The room was used in the week by Temple Ewell school as a schoolroom until 1963. A well has recently been uncovered in the rear garden which presumably could have been used for Baptising new converts or disposing of naughty school- boys.

There was an adjoining house called”Dovedale House” which was given to the church by Charles Edward Ashdown in 1894 but this has since been demolished.

Howard Bradley was appointed as Superintendent to the church which was also attended by his mother and brother David. David was owner of the dry cleaners “Jarman and Watts” in Dover.

Howard noticed that people were standing around in the village with nothing to do. This was in the 1920s when the nation was in the depths of a recession and Howard wanted to provide local employment. He arranged for the village men to build a side hall extension to the church. There is still a plaque inside the hall which reads “The Institute” and forms the third section of the church.

The history of the Baptist Church does however precede the building. The term “Baptist” can in itself be misleading. The Baptists are not followers of John the Baptist but followers of Jesus Christ. 15 They do not believe that any change takes place when Baptism takes place. It is however an important public declaration of the real change that takes place when Jesus enters into the life of that person. The baptism is by completely going under the water which is symbolic of dying and then rising up, cleansed from our sin. We prefer not to leave anyone under the water!

Temple Ewell Baptist Church does owe its existence to Eythorne Baptist Church. In 1550, a very brave lady called Joan Boucher was burnt at the stake in the reign of Mary I and is listed on the Martyrs’ Memorial outside Canterbury Cathedral. She was a wealthy lady who had been in the court of Henry VIII. While she was burning a bishop was trying to convince her of the error of her ways. She said to him “You lie like a rogue. Go read the Scriptures”. Joan was connected to Eythorne Baptist Church and had teaching from their minister Master Humphrey at what was described as “Quiet Eythorne”.

During the early years of the nineteenth century Eythorne Baptist Church had over 200 members under the leadership of John Giles. Members were sent to form new churches in Deal, Canterbury, Dover, Eastry, Barnswell and Ewell. The latter was founded in 1805 when Admiral Lord Nelson was teaching the French a lesson at Trafalgar. It was joined to the Dover Church in 1878. A wooden building was erected in1869 which then was conducted by Wesleyans and bought by them in 1871. Seven years later they let it to the Baptists at a nominal rental of one shilling with liability for upkeep. This site is now occupied by Lorna’s Barber shop.

In 1883 Miss Caroline Fector handed over the mission to four Baptist Trustees. There was a school in existence in 1886 with 18 scholars but it stopped soon after- wards and re-commenced in 1904.

The church continues to look to the future and there is a current planning application for alteration and modernisation.

16 FridayFriday ClubClub Welcome back from the holiday, I hope you all enjoyed your- selves. We ended our last season with the good old fish & chip lunch, this is a popular event for us and was enjoyed by everyone.

Now with the days getting shorter (ugh) we must start to plan our winter activities. So watch this space.

Sadly we may have to seriously think about closing our Club in the very near future due to the fact that we have to take down and replace the tables in the hall into their stacking rack after use. Our ages range from between 70 and 92 and many are quite unfit. 95% of the time the lads from Branching Out are kind enough to help us by putting the tables down but we struggle each week to dismantle, lift and replace the tables back in the stacking rack and our concern is injury. Not so long ago we had a caretaker who willing did this for us once a week but sadly no more. This is quite an issue for us and may possibly mean the demise of the Friday Club after almost 50 years. Bye for now Yvonne

TempleTemple EwellEwell W.I.W.I.

After we had concluded the business at our July meeting we enjoyed refreshments of strawberries, cream, shortbread and cheesecake. We also put forward suggestions for speakers, entertainment etc. for 2018. During August we enjoyed two social events. We had a trip to Great Dixter in East Sussex, visiting the house and gardens, then on a rainy day we enjoyed an Afternoon Tea at Jan's, alternating between the garden and house to dodge the showers. Our next meeting is on September 14th when we will be attempting to do some flower arranging. Anyone wishing to join us will be made very welcome,we meet at 7pm in the Village Hall.

We’re having a Quiz in October - see page 23 for details.

Quietness can be very unsettling. We've all had the experience of trying to talk to somebody who won't reply.

Quiet can be seen as a void that needs to be filled by any means. If the noise is not to our taste then we can long for release, particularly if the person beside us is snoring! Quietness is particularly welcome if we are intent on a small noise, possibly of some wild animal or bird.

A while ago, I needed a hearing test. Not only did it take place in silence, but it also required complete concentration.

Elijah once had the experience of standing on a mountains, seeking God at a crisis point in his life. He heard an earthquake and thunderstorm but God was not in those things. After the noise ended, God spoke in a "still, small, voice".

Jesus said "My sheep listen to my voice" (John chapter 10). It is necessary for us to be intent on his small voice, and not allow it to be drowned out by competing noises ,if we are to hear what he wishes to say to us!

Our activities continue as usual: Sunday Family Service: 10.30am Monday Keep Fit: 7.30pm Wednesday Bible Study and Prayer: 7pm

Future Events Sunday 10th September 4-6pm. This is for children and adults and comprises about 1 hour of craft activities, 10 minute Bible based talk, a full cooked meal. We will be thinking about "Listening to God’s Voice". All are welcome.

If we can help in any way please do not hesitate to contact June on 822982 Jack on 825150 or our minister Ewart Graham on 375823. www.temple-ewell-baptist.co.uk

22 Re-opening of the Playing Field circa 1953

Looking through some old photos I found some of the re-opening of the Playing Field after it had a face lift from being an old meadow with and air raid shelter etc. Those of us who lived in Temple Ewell at the time used to enjoy playing there.

The gentleman who opened it was Lord Luke. I believe he was Prince Philip’s uncle.

Temple Ewell and District Produce Association Summer Show, held on Saturday 16th July in the Village Hall, was a lively affair. We had more entries than we have had for a long time with 80 members putting items on the table. We were full to capacity and had to use the stage for the overflow. Thanks to everyone for their great effort. We are so grateful for the support that the Villagers give to the gardeners.

A massive thanks to all.

We had an Outing to R.H.S. Hyde Hall Gardens on Saturday the 5th August. The weather was mixed with sunshine and one or two small showers but on the whole very pleasant. They had a Flower Show with lots of stalls selling plants and gardening sundries so we had lots to see and buy. A good day was had by all.

The Autumn Show is on the 9th September in the Village Hall at 2pm-4pm - our last show for this year. We hope you can make it and looking forward to seeing lots of entries Regards, Trevor

BrowniesBrownies

For July we made masks, fruit animals and a flower arrangement each for the Flower Show. For our last meeting we went to visit Whitfield Brownies for a Thai evening. We made flowers – lillies and ate some chicken and rice followed by mango with ice cream and we played some games.

We start back on Friday 8th September 6-7.30pm at the Baptist Church. To join us go to the Girl Guiding website or call Brown Owl on 827138.

In September some of the girls will be going on an Adventure Day/Night near Ashford, doing zip-wire, abseiling and more!

Judging by the amount of after- school activity of youngsters keen to try it out, the equipment appears to be a great success already.

Through a series of consultations with the primary school children, the most popular pieces of equipment were identified - Monkey Bar Rings, Hanging Tyres, Traversing Net, Wobbly Bridge - and these have now been added to the already well used play equip- ment which was installed back in 2015. The Parish Council wanted a playground that would provide enjoyment, stimulation and imaginative play for many years to come. Natural features were also considered to stimulate children’s senses. The Clerk had successfully secured £2,000 of grant funding from Kent County Council back in September towards the project. Cllr Miss Beth White liaised with Temple Ewell Schools PTA on behalf of the Parish Council and obtained an additional grant of £1,500.

We hope that these improvements will promote a good sense of community for our children and families of the village and future generations to come. Photos next page.

Annual Village Walk 1pm - 3pm, Sunday 10th September, meeting outside the Village Hall lower room in Temple Ewell. Fortunate as we are to have so many lovely routes to walk in the area surrounding the village, it is important that these paths be walked in order to keep them open. Come along and get to know new people, get some healthy exercise and enjoy this area of outstanding natural beauty in the late Summer. TIDDLERS SUMMER DAY OUT!

This summer Tiddlers decided to visit the new children's playground at River Recreation ground. This has been especially designed for aged 5s and under so was just right for our little Tiddlers! Picnics were enjoyed and the little ones all gathered on the blankets for a welcomed ice lolly.

Tiddlers meets every Tuesday morning in the Millennium Hall from 9-11. It is for Mums, Dads, Nanny’s or Grandads with babies and little ones ages 0 to School age. Do come and join us!

Dear Newsletter

During the lovely warm weather in July I took my little 3 year old granddaughter out into the woods several times to explore Temple Down and the woods.

For over forty years we have enjoyed our lovely countryside and Rights of Way, confidently allowing the children to walk freely and appreciate the freedom of being out in the woods and fields. The development of our Community Wood was a great asset and is beautifully managed and continues to provide quiet isolation and solitude.

However, I was utterly dismayed to see so much dog mess in the Community Wood. We needed to navigate our way through the pathways, stepping so care- fully that I was relieved when we arrived at the steps to the car park. This is not what was envisaged when the Community Wood was created. The Parish Council provide 'Poo' Bins at strategic points and there are notices throughout the Wood asking dog walkers to clear up after their dogs. Please, please clear up after your dogs and do not leave the Wood, or any countryside walk or Rights of Way, in such a disgusting state. It is NOT the fault of the dog!

Editor’s note: Scout Hut at River I was saddened to hear that the Friday Friday - Beavers 4-30 to 5-30pm Club may not be able to continue due to Tuesday - Cubs 6-30 to 8-30pm them not being able to manage putting Monday - Scouts 6-30 to 8-30pm out tables and chairs at the hall.

This seems to be a problem in village halls generally. In River my Art Group had the same problem, but was lucky enough to be able to find someone who, for a small fee, does it for us.

I wonder if this might be a solution for the Friday Club, if someone can be found. Guess the Show - it was Lyrical Lottery in 1996.

Kent County Council has withdrawn the consultation on infant feeding after listening to feedback from concerned families and other stakeholders.

The consultation, launched on July 18, will now be reviewed and relaunched in September as it is recognised the current consultation has caused some confusion and does not fully articulate what was intended.

Leader of Kent County Council, Paul Carter said: “This year, the Health Visiting service has seen an investment of £21.85million. By almost doubling the number of Health Visitors through this investment, we now have the capacity to reshape the health visiting service alongside enhanced breast feeding support.”

“Kent County Council is determined to deliver a comprehensive breast feeding support service in the future. We will be carrying out pre-consultation meetings in early September with those mothers and other key stakeholders who are currently expressing concern.”

“All feedback received so far will be taken into account when the Infant Feeding proposals go out to consultation again next month.”

Paul Carter continued: “Kent County Council is totally committed to supporting new mothers to breastfeed. The increased number of Health Visitors means that 95% of new mums now receive their new birth visit as required.”

“We are determined to deliver an enhanced breast feeding advice service and are prepared to take extra time in rewording the consultation document to make our intentions clear and set out our proposals with absolute clarity.”

36 TRAVEL ODE

Trees to the left of me, tree to the right Green, yellow, brown to red turning bright To Boston, we’re coming again Hello, New England, don’t you dare rain!

A tapestry of colours enveloping us now The Fall of New England – the sight before us now White steepled churches, clapboard houses dotted here and there Successors of every Pilgrim Father settling with care.

One can only imagine such a sight Leaves of different colours turning bright Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Maine Not forgetting New Hampshire – getting there by train.

Cameras a’clicking – meeting new folk Discussing the changes in England – the Old one, the New Clean air, no litter, pride in their town Willing to welcome us, to show us around.

The villages, towns and cities bustling with life “Where do you come from?” asks the man and his wife Curious about England, the one that is old The tales we can relate, the very bold.

This is probably the shortest travelogue you will ever hear or see I just needed you to share The Fall of New England with me The tapestry of leaves and life surrounding all and the few Green, yellow, gold, red of every hue.
