Saiba Gupta Politecnico di Milano December 2018 3 ABSTRACT Innovation is proven to be an absolute requirement for growth and development, but the type and motivation of innovations may differ depending on the context (socio-economic and cultural characteristics, geography, infrastructure, mindset and income levels of customers). At a time when the entire world seems to be merely paying lip service to the term ‘smart city’, it is important to understand that for a city to be considered smart, the urban system needs to be adaptable and innovative. This research talks about a specific approach to innovation - Jugaad. ‘Jugaad Smartness’ refers to a way of developing flexible, frugal, sustainable and inclusive solutions for cities. I believe this dimension is essential for cities in the face of the various contemporary challenges. ‘Jugaad’ (/dʒuːˈɡɑːd/, Hindi: जुगा蔼) is a Hindi word that in everyday language refers to an innovative hack or a quick fix that fulfils the immediate need by making things work (finding solutions) from whatever resources are at hand. This ‘good enough’ or ‘will do’ attitude can lead people to view jugaad as only a temporary solution. India, which is also a focus of this thesis, has become a breeding ground for frugal and social global innovations. This research aims to illustrate that jugaad innovation can be a driver of transitional change and lead to long-term, durable impact. The thesis analyzes various cases of jugaad solutions, especially those of Indian origin; discussing the various approaches adopted by local firms and multi- national companies and the diffusion of social innovations. Furthermore, the research also looks at the dynamics between the existing regime and niches, in reference to jugaad innovation. Jugaad is a frugal, simple, sustainable and inclusive approach to innovation. It aims to create solutions (products/services/processes) that are accessible to those who are generally un(der)served or excluded and does so with minimum possible wastage. It takes advantage of existing material resources and human capital to deliver context-appropriate alternatives. Hence, the question arises: Are jugaad solutions more than ‘just good enough’? An amount of INR 7060 crore (approximately 1 billion USD) was announced by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in September 2014 to fund the Smart City Mission. “Let us consider urbanization as an opportunity. Gone are the days when it was seen as a challenge or obstacle.” - Prime Minister Narendra Modi The objective of this mission is to promote cities that not only provide core infrastructure, but also a decent quality of life and a clean and sustainable environment to its citizens, along with introducing ‘smart’ solutions. Yet the project proposals for the individual cities are not entirely following these objectives. There is more emphasis on pan city development, instead of focusing first on small scale interventions. The engagement of citizens is limited to feedback. Instead citizens can have deeper involvement in the process as innovators and co-creators. Also, the project requires a diverse group of stakeholders who can co-produce. The 6 dimensions of a smart city (Fig.1) as per the ranking of European medium- sized cities [2], have been widely discussed and researched. Building on this viewpoint, we investigate the current state of knowledge on technological innovation in two of the largest and fastest growing emerging economies: China and India. We undertook a bibliometric analysis of author keywords and combined different quantitative approaches – frequency analysis, cluster analysis, and co-word analysis – to review 162 articles on technological innovation published about China and India for the period 1991– 2015. From the analyses, the trends in technological innovation research in the two countries and the dominant themes of discussion were identified. These themes were further classified into eight sub-themes. Our key findings indicate a near absence of research on the management of technological innovation based on India, limited volume of research on indigenous aspects of innovation, and a lack of theory-building based on these countries’ contexts.     Contemporary South Asia Volume 19, Issue 4, 2011 Jugaad as systemic risk and disruptive innovation in India Author-Thomas Birtchnell Abstract Jugaad is the latest/trend in management and business reports of India's awakening. The term refers to the widespread practice in rural India of jury-rigging and customizing vehicles using only available resources and know-how. While the practice is often accompanied by indigence and corruption in traditional interpretations, the notion of jugaad has excited many commentators on India's emergence into the global economy in its promise of an inimitable Indian work ethic that defies traditional associations of otherworldliness and indolence – widely reported as inherent in India's society and culture. Jugaad has been identified across India's economy in the inventiveness of call-centre workers, the creativity of global transnational elites, and in the innovativeness of Indian product designs. The term has seen an unprecedented growth in popularity and is now proffered as a tool for development and a robust solution to global recession. Jugaad is now part of a wider method for working within resource constraints as ‘Indovation’. In this context, the trope is presented as an asset that India can nurture and export. This article argues that far from being an example of ‘disruptive innovation’, jugaad in practice is in fact part and parcel of India's systemic risk and should not be separated from this framing. Viewed from this optic, jugaad impacts on society in negative and undesirable ways. Jugaad is a product of widespread poverty and underpins path dependencies stemming from dilapidated infrastructure, unsafe transport practices, and resource constraints.

The English language has adopted many words from other languages throughout history. In this process, loanwords sometimes undergo certain variations. The present study is about phonemic variation of Urdu loanwords in standard British English. A list of 135 Urdu words of daily use that English has borrowed was compiled purposively from Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary, 10th ed. (2020) for analysis. All words in the list were transcribed into IPA. Urdu pronunciation was checked from ("Urdu Lughat," 2017) and Farhang-e-Talaffuz (2017) whereas English pronunciation was checked from Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary 10th ed. (2020) and a comparison was made to highlight phonemic variation. Analysis of data indicates that almost one third loanwords retain their pronunciation and among the rest, the majority of words undergo change of vowel sounds whereas others either change a consonant sound or vowel and consonant both in some cases. The current UNCTAD work programme is based on the mandates set at quadrennial conferences, as well as on the decisions of the General Assembly of the United Nations and the United Nations Economic and Social Council that draw upon the recommendations of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD), which is served by the UNCTAD secretariat. The UNCTAD work programme is built on its three pillars of research analysis, consensus-building and technical cooperation, and is carried out through intergovernmental deliberations, research and analysis, technical assistance activities, seminars, workshops and conferences. This series of publications seeks to contribute to exploring current issues in science, technology and innovation, with particular emphasis on their impact on developing countries. The term “country” as used in this study also refers, as appropriate, to territories or areas.     Opportunities and Resources for Agbiotechnology Research and Innovation: What Lies Ahead for Aspiring and Young Scientists in Kenya? Report of a Preliminary Study January, 2013 © ocrg Executive Summary This report summarizes the results of an exploratory study that examined the experiences and observations of bioscientists and managers regarding several elements of the bioinnovation ecosystem in Kenya. It concentrated on demand development, applications and resources available to stimulate bioagricultural research and commercialization (non-veterinary). The report identifies what scientists themselves say constrains commercialization of the bioscience research they carry out. It outlines specific resources they that they need to move forward. And indicates actions recommended to realize the many benefits that can be derived from bioinnovation including increased access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food for the population of Kenya. The report cites thirteen issues that merit further investigation. One is the innovation management system and processes in place where scientists work. These systems and processes likely affect the motivation, performance, entrepreneurial aspirations of scientists and bioinnovation that occurs.
