1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards 2008 * Entry Form * W E L C O M E !! * ..And thankyou for entering the 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards in 2008, sharing your music with us and supporting this project that takes our great local talent to the airwaves and beyond!

This year marks quite a milestone – 7 years of getting more of our region’s original and their music to a wider audience, of supporting emerging and established talent in the Hunter and Central Coast area …we reckon it’s a tradition worth celebrating!!! These Awards offer the chance to have your music played on air, to be heard and judged by local and national music industry professionals, and to be in the running for some great prizes!!

2008 sees some exciting new additions to the prize pool. Acknowledging the original music written for theatre and film, there’s a new category called ‘Soundtracks: Music for Theatre and other Productions’. In the Specialist Awards, the new ‘Best Producer / Track Production’ award acknowledges the vital role that the producer plays in making a song sound its best on a recording. So if your track is locally produced / mastered, then make sure you include those details in your Entry Form! The ABC Music Prize has a new look; valued at $5000, the ABC Music Prize provides the winner with an opportunity to have their music released by ABC Music. In consultation with ABC Music, the prize can involve the making of new recordings, the release and marketing of existing recordings or a combination of both, so being flexible enough to offer what would benefit the winner/s most. And for the first time, 1233 ABC Newcastle will be offering a major prize! The 1233 Tour Support Prize is a practical manifestation of the commitment of taking local music ‘beyond’ and on the road! The Prize offers the winner/s $1233 in Tour Support AND a half day session with a nationally renowned publicist. If you want to be considered for this prize, you’ll need to answer some questions– all the details are in the Entry Form.

The online presence of the music awards is also different this year. We’ll be setting up a photo gallery of all the entrants with links to their own myspace / websites. So make sure you include a CD / floppy disc with a high resolution JPEG of yourself / the band, as well as an Artist / Band Biography as a word document with your entry! There’s a regular blog with all the latest news, there will be feature articles on everything from copyright to Entrant of the Week, and much more!

And we thought it was time to give a nod to the many cover bands out there that make music in this region with the Viva Le Cover Competition! Go to the website for more details!

Please take the time to read ALL of the Terms and Conditions of Entry – there are quite a few, but this is a legal document; and as with all legal documents, it’s a good idea to read it before you sign! There’s more information about the competition details, the judging process and all updates on our website – go to www.abc.net.au/newcastle and click on the Music Awards Icon. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m in Tuesday to Friday and, depending on your luck, the occasional Monday.

I’m looking forward to hearing your entry!

Music is probably one of the most widely accessed, generated, marketed and publicly available art forms, yet at the same time an intensely personal thing. There are so many crossovers within the genres, and everyone will have a different opinion on what makes up a particular . For the purposes of this competition, we’ve gone with the generally accepted and commonly used terms. Hopefully the following will be helpful in choosing the best category for your entry.

Alternative Also known as ‘indie’, encompassing the rock / pop style of music that is a little left of centre (from The Cure to Radiohead to Nirvana to Pavement to PJ Harvey to Arcade Fire…); by all means anything a little left of centre in its genre – alt folk, alt country.

Blues & Roots From classic Blues (Muddy Waters) to Blues rock (ZZ Top, John Spencer Blues Explosion) to Roots (John Butler Trio, Ash Grunwald) to a mix (Mia Dyson).

Contemporary Dare we call this the more ‘serious’ side of pop? Formerly known as the ‘Adult Contemporary’ category (Missy Higgins, Coldplay, John Mayer).

Country From Slim Dusty to Kasey Chambers to Keith Urban.

Folk Songs that tell a story; from traditional bush bands, to Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, to The Waifs.

Instrumental Music without lyrics, where the melody is carried by an instrument other than voice / vocals. entries fit best within this category.

Jazz Traditional, Swing, Instrumental and Acid varieties.

Pop Literally, popular music. Also includes style-specific pop in the tradition of The Beatles, the B52’s, 80’s pop, Britpop and Aussie bands like Custard, for example. The line between a pop song and a poppy rock song is very fine ... we’ll leave it up to you!!

Rock From old school rock (ACDC, Cold Chisel) to garage rock (White Stripes) to pop rock (Crowded House). Heavy Rock is its own sub-category.

Soundtracks: Music for Theatre and other Productions Original music composed for and / or used in theatrical, film and other productions in (or coming up in) 2008. Please include details about the production and where the song / score section fits in.

Urban The umbrella for the following sub-categories: - Hip Hop - RnB - Electronica (includes Dance, House, Trance, Drum n Bass, Ambient and all digitally generated music).

Continues on the next page……

1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards 2008 * Entry Form

Please note:

If we receive a significant amount of entries of a high standard in a particular sub-category, then that sub category may be treated as a separate category in it own right and judged separately. For example; in the Urban category, if a significant amount of entries are received in the sub category of Hip Hop, those entries will be separated from the RnB and Electronica / Dance entries and made into an entirely separate category.

If minimal entries are received in either a sub category or category, that category may then be merged with another.

If your song, stylistically, fits better into another category, it may be moved during the judging process. This is entirely for the song’s benefit!!

Please check the website for more information and details on the judging process, and the coordinator’s regular Blog for updates on entries and categories.

** For those interested in music categories and genre definitions, there’s some interesting information for your reading pleasure via the Wikipedia pages on the above genres. **

1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards 2008 * Entry Form * HOW TO ENTER *

Step 1 ~ Record your track/s on to CD (Broadcast quality)

We understand that the production quality of the tracks are going to differ, but whether you record the song in your bedroom or in the studio, there are a few things that everyone can do to make sure the track sounds the best it possibly can. Things like making sure your instruments are in tune, that harmonies match, that one instrument doesn’t drown out the rest in the mix, and that vocals are on key (unless they’re meant to be off…). It’s also helpful to get a fresh pair of ears to have a listen before you send it in.

Each track entered must be on a separate CD LABEL ACTUAL CD with CATEGORY, ARTIST, TRACK NAME, TRACK DURATION LABEL CD CASE with CATEGORY, ARTIST, TRACK NAME, TRACK DURATION ENTRIES WITHOUT PROPER LABELLING WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

This year, we are shaping the online presence of the Music Awards a bit differently. Instead of an artist / band page, we’ll have a list of all the entrants with a link to their own website / myspace page. This is the best way for people to hear your music online, so be sure to upload the songs you entered on your web page. However, we still need an Artist / Band Biography for programs and a Photo for the website! Please include a separate CD / floppy disk with your biography (Microsoft Word document) and a high resolution photo in JPEG format (max width 300 pixels) with your entry.

Step 2 ~ Fill out the 2008 Entry Form

MAKE SURE YOU READ ALL SECTIONS OF THIS ENTRY FORM, including the Conditions of Entry, and SIGN where you are asked to. If you are entering more than one track, FILL IN A COMPLETELY SEPARATE ENTRY FORM FOR EACH TRACK AND INCLUDE A CD CONTAINING ONE TRACK ONLY.

Step 3 ~ Submit your Entry!

Artists / Bands can submit their entry from Thursday May 8th until Friday 13th June by submitting their broadcast quality track on CD and COMPLETED entry form (including all required supporting material and the signed Terms and Conditions of Entry) in the following ways: Drop in to our studios: 1233 ABC Newcastle, 95.5 FM ABC Central Coast Cnr Wood & Parry Sts Erina Fair Newcastle West 2302 Gosford (opp. Hamilton TAFE / near the Cambridge Hotel)

Send by post: 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards PO Box 2205 Dangar 2309 NSW REMEMBER! You need to include contact details of any third party who owns Copyright in the recordings and make sure ALL Artists involved with your recording sign the Entry form. Please give us a call if you have any questions. 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards 2008 * Entry Form * TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY *

1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards 2008 * Entry Form * The 1233 Tour Support Prize: Expressions of Interest *

Have you ever been on tour? Have you ever thought about taking your music on the road, outside your familiar venues and away from the faithful home crowd? And would you know where to start planning?

1233 ABC Newcastle has strengthened their commitment of ‘taking local musical talent to the airwaves and beyond’ in offering this new prize as a practical manifestation of the ‘beyond’ side of things! We’re looking for the Artist / Band that has the will, and just needs some assistance with the way!

Who … You may be an artist / band that has thought about doing a small tour, but don’t have much knowledge of what’s involved and where to start the planning. You may be a more established artist / band with a vision and perhaps a tour plan, but need an extra shot in the arm to make it happen.

What … This prize consists of $1233 worth of tour support, and a half-day session with a nationally renowned Publicist. The session provides the opportunity to discuss all manner of things from image to tour plans to posters to marketing strategies. It all depends on where you’re at and what you need at this stage of your musical career! Please see Clause 36 in the Terms and Conditions of Entry for more details.

How … If you would like to be considered for this prize, please have a think about the following questions:

• How would you / the band benefit from taking your music on tour?

• Where would you go, and how long would you tour for?

• How would you budget / propose to spend the $1233 worth of tour support (e.g. gear hire, accommodation, posters etc.)?

… to enter … Please attach a document (preferably typewritten) to your entry form with your answers to the above questions. Feel free to be as creative as you like! Remember – the more information you include as to your thoughts and ideas, the better idea the judges will have as to who will benefit most from this prize.

You will be judged on the strength of your proposal (how much thought you’ve put into your answers), AND on how well your track does in the judging process.

…. Good Luck!
