Page 1 KINGSGROVE CRICKET CLUB – MAY 2006

WHEN: THURSDAY 22 JUNE @ 7:30pm WHERE: KINGSGROVE RSL

(PRE AGM Thursday 15 JUNE – 7:30pm Kingsgrove RSL)

Dear Parents and Friends of Kingsgrove Junior Cricket Club,

The Annual General Meeting for the start of the 2006/2007 season is quickly approaching. We need you to consider taking a position on the committee or as a coach to help us continue to make cricket an enjoyable summer pastime for your child. Many of our current committee are quickly coming to the end of their time serving this club and its children. It is time for new faces to step forward to continue the great Kingsgrove tradition by pursuing the rewarding volunteer work carried out so unselfishly by many already serving the club.

If you are considering getting involved then please contact Anthony MARVELLO (Club Secretary) 9502-1514

Nominations will be taken to fill the following committee and coaching positions at the PRE AGM on Thursday 15 JUNE at Kingsgrove RSL at 7:30pm:

President Vice President Secretary Assistant Secretary Treasurer Gear Steward Recorder General Committee Members Fund Raising Committee Grading Committee

Nominations will also be taken for coaching positions. Preference will be given to coaches with a level one coaching certificate or a willingness to do the level one course. Many comments filter through to the committee of both a positive and negative nature in regards to coaches each year. Here is your chance to put some action behind the talk and show what you can do to improve our coaching ranks. We would like prospective coaches to nominate a management team of coach, manager and scorer as part of their nomination if possible.

For the sake of our children we ask you to seriously consider lending a hand, sharing your skills and adding a new face full of enthusiasm to our committee.

Yours truly, Steve Starks (Juniors President)

President’s Report (Senior Club) – Michael Free

Another year has past and whilst it was not as successful as some previous years, as a club we maintained similar player numbers and it was obvious the players enjoyed their cricket.

Congratulations to the 14C team on winning your premiership, the efforts put in through out the year certainly paid off. To the 12C Green team bad luck you went so close but there is always next year. To all other teams - well done and just try to improve on this year.

The senior club fielded teams in 1 st , 3 rd and 4 th grades, with only 4 th grade making the finals. They were beaten in the first semi by just a few runs after cruising in the early stages. 1st and 3 rd grades just missed out on reaching the finals after a slow start to the season. Overall a disappointing result however we did enjoy ourselves. Thanks to the senior committee especially Tom Davies and Karen Tritton for the many hours put in this season.

It was great to see a large number of ex juniors playing in the senior teams and also winning awards, we look forward to more coming through over the next few years.

As the years progress it seems harder to get people interested in the administration side of cricket, whilst any help is appreciated we are always looking for new people to put their hands up and join their respective committees, this can only help our club and inturn benefit the players.

To Steve Starks, Anthony Marvello and the junior committee well done again, your efforts to provide affordable cricket to junior players of all ages have been outstanding and our clubs future looks bright.

In closing a special thanks to the captains, coaches, managers and supporters that were there week in week out. We hope to see you all back next year.

Michael Free

President’s Report (Junior Club) – Steve Starks

The 2005/2006 season has now drawn to a close and it is with great pleasure I present this report.

To all – thank you very much for the opportunity of once again allowing me to sit in the President’s chair. Sadly, this may be the last time my name appears in this role as a result of changes with the prescribed amalgamation of Juniors and Seniors.

Once again Kingsgrove Junior Cricket Club showed how much talent lies within our ranks. We entered 10 competition teams and 1 under 8’s team, which was an increase of 1 from the previous season. Teams entered were:

• An under 8’s ‘have a go’ side • 10A and 10C • 12A, 12C (Green) and 12C (Blue) • 14A, 14B and 14C • 16A and 16B

Of these 10 competition teams, 8 teams were successful in qualifying for the semi finals. To have 80% of our players achieving this milestone is a true measurement of the depth of talent in the club. Of the 8 - the 10Cs, 12C Green and 14Cs were successful in qualifying for the Finals – with the 14C’s going on to win the flag. Congratulations to all involved!

As touched upon last season, I asked if we could all make it a mission to look to increase registrations in the under 8 age group. I am pleased to inform you that this was met with a very positive result. Our numbers increased by more that 100% - more that doubling the players in the under 8s and by all accounts they had a very enjoyable and successful season – irrespective that this is a non-competition age group.

Page 5 KINGSGROVE CRICKET CLUB – MAY 2006 On the social scene we did not have as many events as in previous years – some by design and some out of our control. Sadly missed was the Bingo Night but I have been assured that this has been scheduled - and booked – for the first half of the 2006/07 season.

After much “will it” or “won’t it” - the Christmas party finally did go ahead. The social committee had great difficulty in securing a venue for the preferred date but eventually found an opening at Bexley Bowling Club. I can say that after being associated with the club for over 8 years this was one of the most successful and well patronised social events the committee has organised. Congratulations to all involved and thank you to all that attended – a great night was had by all!

With all volunteer organisations we need funds to operate and it would be remiss of me if I did not acknowledge and thank our very generous sponsors.

Kingsgrove RSL has always been very supportive, allowing us to use their premises and provides financial support which goes towards our trophies. Without this assistance things would be a lot tougher. To Pelagia Billiris and her crew at Mullane’s Pharmacy at Oatley West a big thank you for your financial support – it is greatly appreciated.

As in previous seasons there is always a very healthy number of boys and girls selected in representative sides. It is great to see so many committed children and parents willing to make the time and effort to ensure that the great game of cricket has the best talent to choose from. Congratulations to all those chosen and keep up the good work. To those who think they might be capable or sadly missed selection this season - keep striving and the opportunity might be yours next season.

Well done to all of the team award winners. Your efforts throughout the season have not gone unrecognised but at all times please remember all those around you that have given you support and assistance to achieve these high honours. This can be your partner/s in the middle, the team in general, the coach or manager plus all those encouraging from the sidelines.

Finally, and by no means last, it is my most important task to thank all those involved in ensuring the smooth running of the club. A special thanks to Secretary - Anthony Marvello and Treasurer - Ken Marshall, two hard working gents whose efforts contribute directly to the successful operation we call Kingsgrove (Junior) Cricket Club. To name all others individually would put me at risk of missing someone’s name, so instead I will cover this generally. To all of you important people please be assured your assistance is gratefully received.

From the Executive Committee to the General Committee and on to the Fund Raising committee - thru to the Grading committee and Gear Steward your efforts in your positions are reflected in the success of the club. Thank you. Coaches, Managers and Scorers I salute you all for all the time, work and sacrifices made throughout the year. The success and future of the club lies with you .

To the parents and children please accept my heartfelt thanks on making the 2005/06 season one of the best on record.

Have a great off season, stay safe and I hope to see you all at registrations next season and to all those departing the club I wish you every success in the future.

Steve Starks

Secretary’s Report (Junior Club) – Anthony Marvello

Kingsgrove Cricket Club (KCC) in the 2005-06 season, entered 10 junior teams and a under 8 side in the junior competition of Georges River St. George Cricket Association (GRSt.GCA) Inc. - comprising of 130 registered players.

Congratulations and many thanks to all those who helped the club this year and in previous years: including the association, our senior team, our sponsors – Kingsgrove RSL and Mullane’s Pharmacy - Oatley West, the other clubs, committee members, coaches their assistants, the families and the boys and girls of Kingsgrove.

On the field, the majority of our sides made semi finals with our 12C Green side going through as undefeated minor premiers and our 14C side being successful in the finals.

Page 6 KINGSGROVE CRICKET CLUB – MAY 2006 Overall this was another successful year – finishing 2 nd in the junior club championship.

As a club our overall numbers in terms of registered players and teams increased which was pleasing however ongoing recruitment is a key issue at all levels of the game. As important, is the retention of existing children and the increased involvement of their parents, particularly as the junior careers of our under 16’s come to a close and their parents look forward to somewhat quieter Saturday’s

At the individual level a number of players enjoyed representative honours for GRSt.GCA and St. George District Club during the year. They are:

• AW Green Shield / EG Weblin Shield – Shane MacDonald (16A) • Harold Moore Shield – Lee Aitchison (14A) & Joshua Scott (14A) • WS Gee Shield – Michael Moir (14A) & Michael Starks (14B) • JH Creak Shield – Jay Rowles (formerly Belgrove), Nikhil Krishnan, Blake Newport, Rhys Jones, Tomis Papac, Zac Speechly (all 12A)

Nicola Carey (12A) again represented NSW PSSA in the state cricket competition held during the Christmas school holidays. NSW won the final as well as going through the competition undefeated. Furthermore, Nicola was selected in the ‘Emerging Breakers’ under 14 side as well as playing 3 rd grade cricket for the St. George / Sutherland Slayers.

David Mifsud (12A) represented the Eastern Suburbs District in the Arch Cawsey Shield.

Kelly Gilbert and Kate Caccamo both of our 12C Green side – represented the Bankstown Goulder Shield Team. Kate and Kelly and the rest of the girls were successful in winning the Goulder Shield competition beating Central Coast Newcastle by 5 .

Congratulations are also extended to Ross Bougoukas (16B) on his maiden century (he scored 2) and Chris Bozinovski (14C) for his hat-trick during the season.

Thanks once again and I look forward to doing it all again next year.

Page 11 KINGSGROVE CRICKET CLUB – MAY 2006 Team Reports – the year in review

16A - Michael and Anne Powell

This season’s 16A competition was of a very high standard with several teams consisting of mainly representative players. Our boys competed at the highest level and did so with great sportsmanship. Whilst they may not have been the best team in the competition they played each game with great spirit and with a fantastic sense of fun. They played the game each Saturday to have fun in the company of their friends and win lose or draw they did it every week.

Matthew Borg: A fine fast bowler who always bowled a good line and length, Matt could deliver that unplayable ball that would get through a batsman’s defence. The opening bowlers spot in 16A’s is no place for the faint hearted but when called upon Matt would always deliver.

James Caffyn: James could always be relied upon to deliver what the team needed. Proficient with bat or ball he could make runs and take wickets almost on request. His fielding however was always entertaining and he wowed us on several occasions with his athleticism.

Chris Fifita: Chris is his own harshest critic and he has very high standards. After a slow start to the season Chris came good with the bat and put together some good scores. His bowling is always consistent in both line and length and he was often hard to score off

James Greene: A true all-rounder James has ability in all aspects of the game. A powerful batsman, potent fast bowler and sharp fieldsmen he was an asset wherever he played.

Adrian Lacorcia : One of the youngest players in the team, Adrian joined us four season’s ago to make sure we had a full team. Since then he has become an integral part of the squad as our regular keeper. Capable with the bat as well, he will be a force next year as he has another year in 16’s

Shane Macdonald : Another one of our younger players Shane stepped straight into the 16A’s and acquitted himself very well. Capable with bat and ball he took his cricket to another level this season making both junior representative and Green shield sides.

Mitch Parkinson: A good close in fielder Mitch took many sharp catches and saved many runs at point and slip. A dogged defender with the bat Mitch was the player you wanted at the crease when the chips were down and we needed to hang on.

Andrew Powell: A powerful striker of the ball and consistent line and length bowler Andrew could always be counted on to tie down the batsmen. Whether at opening bowler or second change he could always produce something special. A strong fielder he restricted many runs with his strong throw.

Panos Toumbelekis: The youngest player in the squad, Panos stepped up from the 16B’s to balance team numbers. A little nervous at the beginning of the season he soon found his place bowling leg spin that many batsmen could not play. He finished the season as our leading taker and will be a force next season in the 16’s.

William Tringas: A young man that just loves to play cricket, William always gave everything in every aspect of the game. A clever spin bowler with a nasty faster ball he could also hold a bat and managed his highest score this season. He also took some great catches that shocked even him.

Peter Volos: A capable batsman, Peter performed on the occasions his team really needed him. His unusual line as a left arm bowler made him dangerous and his commitment in the field an asset. He developed a mean streak this season and this combined with his height made for a vicious bouncer.

Tim West: As always TJ was solid with the bat and although he may think he didn’t have a good season he must remember he opened nearly every week and never let us down. His bowling, as always, was accurate and dangerous and his fielding is outstanding.

Scott Woods: An aggressive bowler, Scott didn’t play favourites, he hated all batsmen equally and he let them know it. His batting improved as the season went on and he managed several good scores in the latter half. Committed in the field he always put in 100%

Page 12 KINGSGROVE CRICKET CLUB – MAY 2006 I would like to thank all the parents and families I have been involved with this season and over the years. It has been a pleasure knowing you all and coaching your sons. Thank you for all your support and friendship during the last six seasons. Thank you to all those who helped out with scoring especially my wife Anne, who not only did the majority of the scoring but also acted as manager over the years and to my daughter Elizabeth thanks for your support and assistance with scoring and supporting the boys.

This report is tinged with a little sadness for me, as it is the last one I will write as coach. Ten of the thirteen players in the team finish their junior careers and move on to the senior ranks. I have coached some of these boys for six seasons and have enjoyed every minute of it. I have watched them grow from boys into young men and enjoyed my time as their coach. Whilst this season was not the best we have ever had the team never gave up in any game. They played with true sportsmanship and showed themselves to be not only good cricketers but also fine young men who can be proud of their achievements and are a credit to themselves and their families.

I have one last thank you and that goes to the boys themselves for all their efforts over the years at training and during the games. I wish them all well for their future and hope to see them all soon.

16B - Michael Bougoukas and Dean Hunter

This was the first season for all these young men in the Under 16’s age group but approximately the 2 nd or 3rd season the majority of these young men have played together. We started the season with 14 players but unfortunately with a couple of injuries ended up with 12 players by the end of the season.

After our first match loss we went on to win the next 5 games with one outright and one bonus point win in a one day match which left us at the top of the competition ladder at the Christmas break.

Unfortunately the Christmas break did not help our team, as I believe our team continued the Christmas break well into March, which unfortunately showed with no wins recorded in the New Year.

Regardless, with such a poor finish to the season we were still able to secure a Semi Final position where we played a close and hard fought game against St George. We batted first and scored 167 runs and then came within 3 wickets of securing a grand final berth.

As this was the 2 nd season that Dean and I had coached the majority of these boys it was a pleasure to witness the growth in their maturity from one season to the next, which showed with their positive attitude at training and their ability to come together as a team.

Congratulations to all the boys for their effort, commitment and, wittiness throughout the season again as they were a pleasure to coach. Hope to see you all return in the new season. Good Luck!

A special thank you from Dean and myself to Dan (pig) Shute for his assistance and expertise in physical training and to Tony Creighton for his impeccable and accurate scoring which again made my job easy in transferring the stats from the scorebook to the computer spreadsheet.

Fiazaan Asam: Fiazaan showed great improvement throughout the year. He always put effort in and the results were showing towards the end of the season.

Shehraiz Awan: Shehrraiz proved that constant effort does pay off with some good innings throughout the season. All advice given was taken and put into his game.

Ross Bougoukas: Lead from the front with the bat with some 2 centuries. Never short of a word in the field always trying to lift the team. Never took a backwards step.

John Bransgrove: Fastest bowler in the competition by far which showed with some of his figures. Big hitter with the bat. A natural talent with plenty of potential.

Mitchell Carey: Always willing to try anything to improve his game. Accurate bowler skilled with either the new or old ball.

Tim Creighton: Tim showed skill with both bat and ball. Tim has much more ability than he is showing. With effort there is no limit to where he can go.

Elliot Johnson: Elliot has showed his ability at different stages throughout this season. With a safe pair of hands he is an asset in the field.

James McKenny: Work very hard this year at training, which showed in the games. Skillful with the older ball and not an easy batsman to dismiss.

Peter Moir: Most talented spin bowler in the competition. The control over the ball is hard to believe for someone so young - amazing potential.

Anthony Nappa: Season was cut short due to injury. He was starting to show his true skill. Had the ability to lift the team whilst he was on the field.

Simon Osman: Multi skilled cricketer. Speed in the field with a strong-arm extraordinary reflexes handy with both bat and ball.

Yasir Ratique: Season cut short due to injury. With more confidence his ability will increase.

Page 14 KINGSGROVE CRICKET CLUB – MAY 2006 Andrew Starks : Part of a successful opening partnership with the bat. Kept the team spirits high whilst in the field. Skilled cover fieldsmen as well.

Blake Tolmie: Blake shows great speed across the ground with a great arm. Too bad that he showed too much potential behind the stumps. Skilful Batsman as well.

TEAM AWARDS

All Rounder – Goes to James McKenny with 15 wickets and 147 runs for the season. His dedication and commitment flowed from the training field on to the playing field always giving 110% effort.

Batting Award – Goes to Ross Bougoukas with 2 centuries and a total of 320 runs for the season. With his natural hand eye co-ordination and ability to score runs quickly always put the opposing team on the defence.

Bowling Award – Goes to John Bransgrove with 22 wickets, John would have been the fastest bowler in the 16’s competition by far. Had all batsmen quivering in their boots and would have claimed a lot more wickets if batter’s weren’t hesitant in playing shots.

Coaches Award – Goes to Blake Tolmie. Blake was our Wicket Keeper and scored the 3 rd highest number of runs for the season. If he wasn’t such a good Wicket Keeper he would have been one of our key bowlers and key fieldsmen for the season. He was always first at training, always positive and always encouraging his fellow teammates and led by example.

14A – Adam Scott and Anthony Marvello

It was always going to be tough in a 4 team 14A competition where the majority of players from our opposition were representative players. On our day we proved we could be the best side in the competition – the only side to beat the eventual premiers. To be a force this year we needed to be on our game with the bat and in the field, week in and week out as there were to be no easy games. Unfortunately this did not prove to be the case; compounded by our inability to bowl sides out throughout the year coupled with the occasional spectacular batting collapse. However on the plus side everyone enjoyed each others company and shared in the respective highs that the boys experienced throughout the season.

Thanks to the mums and dads for helping out and supporting the team with particular thanks to Joe Vitale and Steve Flecknoe for scoring and umpiring at various times throughout the year, Tim Gissing (14B) and Dean Gilbert (12C Green) who helped out when we were short of players, the committee and association.

Lee AITCHISON – This was Lee’s first year with the club but if you didn’t know otherwise you’d think that he had been with the club since he was 8. Lee again played representative cricket, opening the bowling and taking a stack of wickets with his ferocious and unplayable in-swinging yorkers. Lee suffered throughout the season from injury and a good dose of bad luck when it came to run outs. However in addition to his always impressive close in fielding was his scorching one day over spell against SPK where he bowled 6 overs – 6 maidens – 2 for 0 coupled with his spirited 45 in our final game where he showed that he is a far better bat than he may otherwise think.

Jack CAFFYN – Winner of the bowling award with season figures of 63 overs, 10 wickets at an average of 25.1 and economy rate of 4 with best figures of 3 for 21. Jack bowled good lines throughout the year happy to bowl tight or to throw it up when the circumstances required, including a number of caught and bowleds. Notwithstanding a fairly slow start with the bat Jack stood up when the rest capitulated against PWS to score a swashbuckling 38 and backed it up by opening the bowling and taking 2 for 7 off 5 overs including 2 maidens. Congratulations Jack!

Joshua FLECKNOE – Joshua was one of 2 boys promoted from the 14C side to the 14A’s - a deserved promotion but it was to prove a real test for Josh given the number of talented cricketers we were up against week to week. With the bat, Josh could be as devastating as the next scoring an emphatic 24 against SPK early in the season. An athletic fielder equipped with a strong arm you didn’t test. Josh had limited opportunities with the ball given the nature of the competition and at times proved to be a handy first change bowler who when he maintained his control and relied on his height proved to be quite the danger. Overall, while Joshua may be disappointed with his season compared to past years hopefully he has taken something from it and will be a better cricketer for the experience.

Luke HINDLE – Early in the season it looked like Luke was going to be a handy middle order batsman scoring a quick fire 24 against PWS in the first game of the year. Unfortunately, Luke didn’t benefit from us trying different batting combinations in the hope of finding a confident and reliable top order. Luke had limited opportunities behind the stumps but when he did he was tidy and encouraged his teammates across the field. Luke is the ultimate shock change bowler taking 2 for 12 from his solitary 2 overs in the season. A fine team man, quick with the quality remark to keep things on the up on the field.

Julian LUCCHITTI – Winner of the Coaches Award. Our captain, main wicket keeper and opening batsman – Julian gave his all every game, a keen student of the game always willing his fielders and bowlers to keep the pressure up or to try something different. After a series of 30 plus scores over the years, Julian finally nailed his first 50 – in fact a 61 when we desperately needed a win in order to keep our final hopes alive. Congratulations Julian – most deserved.

Simon MARVELLO – Probably not Simon’s best year compounded by quite a nasty blow to the check-bone playing school cricket while not wearing a helmet. Simon too batted up and down the order a bit in search of a strong first 3 positions – most times he looked good and very much in control until a lapse of concentration saw him sitting down with his team mates - best score this year being a 20. Notwithstanding, Simon’s role as an opening bowler he at times struggled for consistency and suffered his share of bad luck. Hopefully Simon will have learn’t from the year and really enjoy his cricket in the years to come.

Michael MOIR – Winner of the batting award. Coupled with Michael’s representation for the association in the WS Gee Shield he had another strong season with the bat, ball and in the field. Michael was our most bowled and consistent bowler – 105 overs, 27 maidens, 13 wickets at an average of 23.2 with an economy rate of 2.9 an over. Michael is a joy watch at the crease, all his hard work and concentration translates into Page 16 KINGSGROVE CRICKET CLUB – MAY 2006 marvelous stroke play both sides of the wicket. Michael finished with an aggregate of 234 runs at an average of 26 with 3 scores in excess of 50. Congratulations on a very good all round season.

Zobair NOMANI – The ‘Zed Man’, another who made the jump from 14C to 14A, a great team man, and hopefully has learn’t a lot for the experience. Zobair was primarily selected on the strength of his fast bowling which improved in the later half of the year without much reward. What Zobair did prove this year is that he can bat and has a very good technique a clear illustration of this was a superb 39 in the final game of the year. Keep working on your skills Zobair.

Joshua Scott – The winner of the all – rounder award in a very tight contest. Joshua finished the season with aggregate runs of 306 at an average of 27.8 with top scores of 74 and 59, 10 dismissals at an average of 26.8 with an economy rate of 2.8 plus 4 field catches and 2 run outs throughout the year. Joshua is an extremely competitive young man who works very hard at his game with the results to match. Congratulations Josh!

Vass STYLLI – 95 runs v’s Ramgsate – November 2005. For those in attendance there isn’t much more we need to say. What Vass learn’t that day is that he has the technique, ability, concentration and the drive to score a lot of runs and on frequent occasions. It was a joy to see him square cut and straight drive Ramsgate into oblivion coupled with strong running between the wickets – the knock deserved a 100. Vass again led the positive talk in the field and caught his share of close in catches.

Jonathon VITALE – Jono in the main opened the batting with Julian and posted a couple of scores in the 20’s. Jono bowling continued to improve this year, typically coming on as a change bowler to plug an end or to provide a breakthrough – Jono’s best figures were 2 for 15 from 6 against PWS and 3 for 11 from 6 overs against SPK. Jono continued his fine fielding performances taking 4 catches plus another while keeping wicket.

14B - Paul Flanagan and Maria Gissing

The team was Nathan Corby, Patrick Ferguson, Bradley Fisher, James Flanagan, Timothy Gissing, Maroun Michael, Jason Pupkovski, Michael Starks, Dylan Venn, Adam Vrahnos and Alex Wong, coached by Paul Flanagan.

The core members of this team have been together for a number of years, a couple of the boys joining from other Kingsgrove teams, and Alex joining Kingsgrove for the first time.

On paper a pretty strong team, and as I sit here and type this report, I remember the good and the not so good times that this team shared this year. I believe that for the boys, this season was about the mates and having a good time, as well as enjoying the cricket.

All the boys contributed strongly throughout the year, not necessarily all at the same time. Injury in the second half of the season made it difficult to field full teams and on a couple of occasions, memorable for the rest of the team’s contribution, we played either one or two players short. At this stage in the report I would like to thank Alex Sekulovski for his assistance by filling in as a player at our semi final, we would have been in dire straits without him.

For those interested in the statistics, we played 8 games, won 4 lost 4; this was enough to get us to the semi finals, which we lost. The team that we played in the semi was the eventual winner of the competition. We scored 1449 runs, had 1457 scored against us and took 67 wickets.

Player Runs Scored Bowling (overs, wickets, runs) Nathan Corby 65 45, 6, 92 Patrick Ferguson 150 47, 3, 140 Bradley Fisher 254 19, 4, 94 James Flanagan 59 25, 3, 127 Timothy Gissing 20 29, 5, 86 Maroun Michael 140 61, 11, 182 Jason Pupkovski 92 57, 7, 121 Michael Starks 52 36, 3, 123 Dylan Venn 118 73, 16, 207 Adam Vrahnos 226 47, 6, 100 Alex Wong 57 43, 3, 153

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Paul for his contribution as coach, to Michael Venn for his meticulous keeping of the scores and to all the parents who made sure the boys were ready to play each week, and turned up at the games to cheer the boys on.

The boys presented themselves well at all our games, demonstrating sportsmanship in dealing with opposition teams, supporting each other, especially when the going got a bit tough, and accepting decisions in the appropriate manner.

It has been a pleasure managing this team, and I hope all the boys will be back next season to continue the fun.

Minor Premiers

It was a crazy season for the mostly first time players in the under 12s. On paper we are the strongest team in the comp with 7 representative players, and personally believe we are the strongest team in the comp.

Unfortunately for some unforeseen situations, the loss of 2 players mid season - leaving us with 10 players and then 1 more in the semi final left us in a disastrous position, bailing out in the semi final.

Thought out the season the team’s performance went from one extreme to another, on paper we had a successful season, but to witness the team’s ability and potential it was a poor outcome.

Despite all that happened I would like to congratulate all the players for their effort and I hoped they had fun and enjoyed their cricket. It is a pleasure and an honour for me to be part of their development in the game and their friendship and I hope we can share it again next season.

I’d like to thank Kevin Gissing from the 12C for helping in the last 2 games in the season, and Raphael Francone from the 12C for leaving his semi to play in our semi, Thanks again.

Last but not least I’d like to thank Paul Jones my assistant coach for his support and help, he is an easy going guy, very knowledgeable and positive person. Also like to thank Craig Shannon volunteering the scoring duties, he did a fantastic job.

The team members:

NICOLA CAREY - Nicola was a new member to the team, there were a lot of rumours about this girl, and they were all true and all good. She was soon nicknamed “scary carey” due to her blistering pace bowling and accuracy. Although she didn’t take many wickets she only accrued 6 sundries in 40 overs. Nicola played wicket keeper on occasions and did a fantastic job. Nicola has great strength with the bat and top scored with a total 290 for the season. I am privileged to have my name as a coach of Nicola, if she continues on this path of cricket she will be a definite to play in the highest level in the future. Is there anything she can’t do - yes, juggle with 4 balls.

DOMINIC SHANNON - Dominic our tallest player by about a foot. I believe Dominic is still learning to control his size, he has blistering pace when bowling, when on line they are unplayable, also with his batting, he is definitely the most powerful player on the field and when he learns to control it he will take control of the game. Dominic was great in the field chasing the ball down with good throwing accuracy. Dominic always trained hard and played hard, he was a pleasure to have in the team. Dominic moves up to the 14s next season. Good luck Dom.

JAY (BELGROVE) ROWLES - Jay had a good season with 265 of the bat, 5 wickets, 5 fielding, 2 keeper catches & 3 stumpings. Jay has a lot of ability and worked hard this year but with a bit more discipline I guarantee your stats will be a lot better. Jay puts a lot of emotion into his game and when channeled in the right direction he is unstoppable. Jay on occasion played keeper and in the 5 th round got 2 catches and 2 stumpings. Jay also played rep cricket. Good work Jay.

ZACHARY SPEECHLY - We all know the potential of Zac, unfortunately this season Zac and his bat did not get along, there was one game in the 4 th round that Zac of old showed up and hit a 40. Zac one of two spin bowlers did a great job taking 8 wickets with his bowling. In the field showing good hands with 4 catches and 3 run outs. It was a relatively a quiet year for Zac who is capable of much higher stats. Zac also played rep cricket.

TOMIS PAPAC - Tom’s batting also let him down this season, last seasons top scorer, wasn’t able to put bat on ball. Apart from that Tom had a good season, his bowling was a huge plus with outstanding stats, bowled 71 overs, topped with 23 maidens, only 8 wides, 4 no balls and 10 wickets, great effort Tom. Out on the field he was very consistent with 6 catches. Tom is a good all rounder always tries hard and loves his cricket, Tom also played rep cricket. Good work Tom.

NIKHIL KRISHNAN - Nikhil 1 st year with Kingsgrove, He was welcomed to the team, Nikhil always tried hard in training and in the games. Nikhil is a very technical player and has the right moves, he struggled with the bat this season but at times he has shown good skills and is very determined to improve them next season.

Page 22 KINGSGROVE CRICKET CLUB – MAY 2006 Nikhil bowling has been consistent and towards the end of the season his bowling was brilliant, 98 runs of his 48 overs and 6 wickets. Great effort! Nikhil also played rep cricket.

SIVASARAN SOORIAKUMAR - Sivi’s 1 st year with Kingsgrove as well, he was a pleasure to coach, a very enthusiastic and motivated player. He didn’t have a great season with the bat, but out in the field was a different story, he was lightning fast, a ball rarely got past him, and he sure cut down runs between wickets for the opposition. Sivi never complained and always trained and played hard. Keep up the good work.

RHYS JONES - Rhys one of our main wicket keepers had a good season this year behind the stumps with 4 keeper catches and a stumping, in the field he put his body on the line, he ran hard and took some good catches 4 in total. Rhys with his spin bowling when on line the opposing players had no answer taking 8 wickets. Rhys also had a bit of a tough time with the bat but was showing improvement. Rhys also played rep cricket.

BLAKE NEWPORT - Blake had a good season with his usual fast and furious bowling taking 11 wickets. Blake started the season on a high with his batting, a huge improvement in his technique and patience hitting 151 for the season. Blake’s a strong all round player. Great hands and right arm in the field taking 4 catches . Blake also played rep cricket.

DAVID MIFSUD - David was also a new player to the team had a great year with the bat, showed a lot of power and control hitting a total of 285 for the season with an average of 47.7 - Great effort. David bowled well with a variety of pace and slow balls taking a total of 9 wickets. In the field David has got good anticipation skills and did a good job with 3 catches. A good all rounder, David moves up to the 14s next season. Good luck David.

Undefeated Minor Premier’s

It is not without some emotion that I sit here to pen the final chapter in an extraordinary year. Who would have thought at the start of the year that things would pan out this way? From a beginning as a group of raw recruits with a common interest in cricket to finish as undefeated minor premiers!

The team was an eclectic group. It started as an assortment of 11 boys and 2 girls of which 3 had never played cricket before and 7 were new to the Kingsgrove Cricket Club. But as a coach I could not have asked for a better bunch of sportsmen and sportswomen to work with, and by the end of the season, not only had they become the team known as The Green Machine but everyone (parents included) enjoyed our time together.

It was always pleasing to watch the team play hard each week but they always played in the spirit, and by the rules, of the game. We respected our opposition, the umpires, and each other. As well as being their coach I hope that I became their mentor and friend, and I also hope that over time I instilled in each player the importance of playing in the true spirit of the game and to enjoy their cricket. If I achieved these small goals then the end result of the competition was secondary.

The team’s performance was a credit to themselves and their families. During the season we shared not only cricket but a whole lot of laughter, tears, BBQ’s, pizza, and about a thousand Redskins (sorry for a few lost teeth)! Over time each and every player showed improvement. They managed to rise to the many challenges through the season with support from their friends and with a just little bit of guidance from Michael and I. They truly played as a team and each week someone new would stand up with an outstanding effort to get the side home.

As coach I endeavored to give everyone a good opportunity to bat and bowl but sometimes due to the opposition capitulating sooner than planned this was not always possible. I’m grateful for the patience the players displayed and I’m sure those moments of disappointment were washed away when their teammates supported, with gusto, their chances when they came.

The end of the season didn’t quite go to plan, with the Machine losing the final and then the challenge final in what could be described as less than perfect circumstances. Our team faced these challenges head on, played with dignity and heart, and won the respect of the people who count. They can hold their heads high. I am proud of each and every one of them and as a coach could not have asked for more.

Lastly, I want to thank the players, their parents and their supporters for making this a memorable season. In my eyes, you are all champions. I wish the best of luck to all of you with your future cricket endeavors, and, if you become famous make sure you remember your time with Coach Gilbert the Gray, the Green Machine, and the Kingsgrove Cricket Club.

I must also thank Michael Caccamo for assisting me with the coaching (he never missed a training session or a game), my wife Kate (who managed the side and who put up with me through the year), Jenny Caccamo for scoring through the season, and last but not least the PR Team (James Watts [Statler/Iron Chef] and Ray Parkinson [Waldorf] who provided reams of commentary on our stars, often about games they’d never seen!) – they also assisted in setting up grounds, cooking BBQ’s and helping out with coaching through the season (Steve Starks and Anthony Marvello provided lots of help and guidance to me as well). Thank you also to David Gauci and Gavin Parkinson for filling in for us in the challenge final, you both did yourselves, and me, proud.

Winter just won’t be the same.

Lindsay Gilbert (aka Coach G / Lex Luther / Gilbert the Grey)

PS. And for the fashion police, the lucky shirt has been retired.

The stars of the Green Machine were:

Jarrod Parkinson: Jarrod had a terrific year and was always in the game whether it be with the bat, ball or in the field. Jarrod possesses a strong desire to succeed and has the cricket skills to back this up. He

Page 24 KINGSGROVE CRICKET CLUB – MAY 2006 sometimes tried to bowl too fast and lost a little control but practice and experience will improve this. A worthy winner of our all-rounder award.

Zac Karolia: This was Zac’s first year for Kingsgrove and he gave 100% each week. He loved his cricket and always had a smile on his face. Zac bowled some terrific spells for us and his line and length were always immaculate. Zac is gaining more confidence with his batting and played some valuable innings.

Ben Baker: This was Ben’s first year of cricket and he made a great fist of it. He was an important part of the team and always had something clever to say. Ben’s bowling improved enormously and by the end of the season he bowled some really important spells for us. Ben also took some terrific catches including a great caught and bowled. Ben’s batting is steadily improving.

David Watts: David always gave 100%. His bowling has improved but being a left arm quick he needs to concentrate on his line so that right handed batsman don’t get any free hits. David took some great catches and was one of our best fieldsmen. David showed the ability to be a very good batsman but needs to work on his shot selection to progress to the next level.

Christian Keriacou: Christian’s cricket skills improved through the year and his bowling and catching were always of high quality. Christian also bowled a few very good leg spin overs when required. Christian played some good innings for us but needs to temper his batting and learn to build an innings and concentrate on his strengths.

Thomas Menton: This was Thomas’ first season of cricket and he proved to be a natural sportsman who was quickly able to apply his skills to the game. Thomas took some good catches and always bowled well. Unfortunately his season was cut short through representative soccer but he was always there adding support when the team needed him.

John Ventura: Whilst consistent at training and at game time, John needs to work harder on his concentration in all facets of this sport. He showed some improvement through the season but to achieve the success he has otherwise displayed in other sporting fields he must apply the patience and skills taught at training. The ball is in his court about where he goes from here.

Aaron Fidge: Aaron was another one of our first timers and showed that he possesses some very good skills. Aaron’s bowling really came on through the year culminating in a fine haul of 3 for 4 in the semi-final. Aaron always looked threatening with the bat but needs to remember that every ball doesn’t have to disappear over the boundary. Aaron also fielded well when he put his mind to it.

Paul Caccamo: Paul had a great year with both bat and ball. He and his brother opened many of our innings and shared a number of century plus partnerships – Paul scoring two half centuries along the way. Paul worked really hard on his bowling and opened the bowling for us in the Challenge Final taking two early wickets.

Chris Caccamo: Chris had a great year with the bat, scoring over 300 runs and three half centuries along the way. Chris would have scored many more runs but had to retire to give others a go. Chris bowled tightly and took some important wickets. He was also tidy behind the stumps.

Kate Caccamo: Kate did well through the year with her bowling causing many batsman problems. Kate played some good innings when we needed them. Kate has more skill than she possibly gives herself credit for and is a fabulous judge of a quick single. Kate was also a member of the Bankstown District Goulder Shield team which went on to win the competition undefeated.

Kelly Gilbert: Kelly had a good season but suffered at times because I had to cut her innings or bowling short to give others a go. Kelly was one of our best fielders and ran out a number of unsuspecting batsmen who took her skills too lightly. Kelly is also explosive between the wickets and was a part of the winning Bankstown District Goulder Shield team and played a valuable innings in the final to help her team across the line.

Dean Gilbert: Dean began the year slowly after starting the season with a broken arm but recovered to score his first 50 and also returned to opening our bowling. Dean didn’t always bowl with much luck but took some valuable wickets for us. Dean proved to be a very good wicket keeper and may have to choose between bowling or keeping in the future.

12C Blues – Jeff Gissing and Mark Kambas

Another season passes and another end of season report is written to remind us of how we went and what took place throughout the season.

With the usual grading and team allocations out of the way we found ourselves in C grade which we were happy with given our mix of new and experienced players. Unfortunately we lost 3 players just prior to the season starting which left us short going into round 1.

We hoped we would pick up some players as the season progressed and thankfully this is what happened and we finished up with 12 players. As mentioned, we had a mix of experience and raw enthusiasm, with 6 of our players new to the game.

Just to make life interesting, another of the KCC U/12 teams was also graded in C grade under the capable charge of Lindsay Gilbert, and it was this team we were drawn to play in the 1st round. Given that we did not have our new players at this stage, we started round 1 with 9 players and restricted the “Green Machine” to 85 runs. Thanks to Lindsay for giving us a couple of fieldsmen to help us out. Come our turn to bat we were down to 8 players and did not bat well, being all out for 26. The signs were not good but as always we remained positive and confident that we could improve and become a competitive outfit.

The start of round 2 and a full compliment of players with George, Alex and Raffaele joining us gave us the chance to show what we could do. Batting first and scoring 90 runs against Mortdale Heights gave us a big chance of bouncing back from our first round loss. Luckily for us they were short a batsmen and we managed to have them all out for 84. A bit too close for comfort but a win is a win and there was some much improved batting, with one of our new players Luke scoring a well made 19 and taking 3 catches. Samuel showed that his technique had improved from last season with 30 no.

We faced Beverly Hills in the 3rd round and this team proved to be our “bogey” team for the season, beating us 3 times. Chasing 141 to win, we managed 9/103, and the pleasing thing was that we batted our 52 overs and were not dismissed. As I kept stressing to the boys all year, it is important to bat out all your overs. Another thing we did after this game was to settle on an opening partnership for the rest of the season. Both Mannie and Luke really settled into their roles very well, with opening partnerships of 22, 103, 18, 27, 41, 17, 65 & 24 really setting the platform for all our victories. Another turning point was discovering that George really took to wicket keeping and enjoyed it so he became our main keeper for the season.

As the season progressed and with winning a few games we really started to believe that we were a chance of making semi-finals. As always though the aim was to keep the boys concentrating on improving their skills at training and on game day and in the main this is what happened.

A game that really stands out is the 1 day game we played against the ‘Green Machine’ in round 6. Day 1 had been a wash out with heavy rain, lightning and thunder. When was the last time we saw that happen in Sydney?! Day 2 was much better for cricket with us winning the toss and electing to bat. We managed a very competitive 2/105 off 30 overs with Kevin making 30 no. A much different score line to the first time we played them! The ‘Green Machine’ then showed what they were capable of with the bat, being ahead on the run rate for most of their innings and needing 7 runs off the last over to win the game. They were only able to score 6 and the game finished in a tie. That was tense!

The rest of the season saw us continue to improve with the bat but we needed to keep working harder on our bowling and fielding to restrict the runs and sundries.

The end of the competition rounds had us on 42 points with 6 wins, 1 tie and 3 losses and in 3rd place.

We were to meet Beverly Hills in the semi-final and were confident that we could beat them and maybe meet the Green machine in the final. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be and 129 runs were going to be hard to defend against a strong batting side. Our bowling and batting was not quite up to the required standard and they cruised to a comfortable win in the 42nd over. Beverly Hills also went on to win the competition. Ah, what could have been!! Even though disappointed, we were happy that we had made the semi’s, that the boys had all improved and bonded well as a team, and that they had all enjoyed themselves throughout the season. I want to thank Kevin, who played for the 12A’s a couple of times as they were short, and particularly Raffaele, who showed great sportsmanship and maturity to agree to play for the 12A’s in their semi final as again they were short. Thanks Raffaele.

Page 26 KINGSGROVE CRICKET CLUB – MAY 2006 For those who love statistics, we scored 1486 runs, had 1078 scored against us, bowled 492 overs with 91 maidens, 86 wides, 82 no balls, 74 byes, 9 leg byes and took 78 wickets. 2 of our players scored over 200 runs each for the season with both having scores of 50 or better. As already mentioned, our bowling and fielding let us down at critical times but that’s something that can be worked on for next season. In conclusion, a great year enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Mark, for all his umpiring and assistance with coaching the team, to Rodney for his sterling efforts with scoring and to a great group of parents who were enthusiastic, keen and committed, friendly and above all always encouraging of the boys. As always the club only runs with much hard work behind the scenes so a big thank you to our hard working committee, particularly Steve, Anthony Ken and Margaret.

And to the team itself, a great group of boys with their own personalities who also worked together as a team. Thank you for all your hard work and efforts and we look forward to seeing you all again playing for KCC next season.

The team comprised: - Samuel Barrington-Smith, Aaron Bartlett, Nicholas Brimmer, Kevin Gissing, George Gotsis, Oliver Hillsmith, Kris Kambas, Mannie Kambas, Luke Michael, Daniel Santos, Alex Nappa, Raffaele Francone.

Grand Finalists

After a successful 2004-05 season, we started the new season with anticipation and trepidation as the boys stepped up to 10A.

Once again, we had a combination of the old and the new with a number of boys returning for another season together with some from other clubs and a couple playing for the first time.

The season started slowly as we faced and were beaten by the 2 strongest teams in the 10A competition, namely Ramsgate RSL and last year’s nemesis Penshurst West in the first 2 rounds.

We improved after this by winning our next game. However the joy was short-lived as we finished 2005 with only 2 wins from our 7 games. At this stage all we hoped for was to finish our remaining 3 games well and gain some experience for the next season.

However after losing our first game in 2006, we hit a purple patch where we won the next game outright against Mortdale Heights and followed that up with another win against ICC. These 2 wins allowed us to snatch 4 th place by a solitary point from Mortdale.

Our next assignment was the semi final showdown against the undefeated Ramsgate RSL. We were sent in by Ramsgate and the boys relished their task and bowled and fielded splendidly. To our surprise Ramsgate declared at 8 down for 98 at the close of the 48 th over. We were left to face 3 tense (more so for the parents) overs before the close of play and finished up at 0 for 3. The next day was very tight where once again the scoring was slow and steady due to the state of the ground and boundaries were a rare commodity.

A number of the batsmen made worthwhile contributions to the team effort that saw us needing 2 runs off the last 2 balls to win with Gavin Parkinson entering the arena. A mighty hook shot to the boundary off the first ball he faced saw us matched up against Penshurst West in the final the next week.

Unfortunately, the boys were unable to match the previous week’s intensity and even a mighty effort by KCC could not prevent our nemesis from advancing to the challenge final and a rematch with Ramsgate.

While we did not finish as premiers this year, it was a fantastic effort by all the boys. Everyone in the team contributed to our success and I hope everyone returns for the 2006/07 season.

THE TEAM

Luke Bartier : A newcomer to KCC who showed great improvement as the year progressed. Rookie of the year.

Nicholas Carosi: Nick joined KCC after playing for Earlwood the previous year. Very good all round performer.

David Gauci : One of the “veterans” of the team. All-rounder who bowled and kept wickets well and his batting improved as the season progressed.

Liam Kelly : Enthusiastic throughout the season. Together with Nick, ensured we had a positive start to our innings.

Michael LaSapda : Another newcomer to KCC this year and improved as the season progressed.

Adam Mazzucco : A sound all round performer throughout the year. His bowling performance has improved greatly in 2005/06.

Gavin Parkinson: Quiet achiever who made a contribution with both bat and ball throughout the season and ensured we got home in a very tense semi final.

Sam Thorne: Another first timer with KCC who also had a very good season. His fielding was a feature and he was responsible for some excellent catches. Page 28 KINGSGROVE CRICKET CLUB – MAY 2006

Kyle Venn: Another of the “veterans” of the team and as he has done in previous years, Kyle was never far from the action in all facets of the game.

Michael Vitale: Michael had an exceptional year. He scored runs, kept wicket, took catches and a stumping. A consistent all round performer.

Ashley Adolphe: My son, another KCC “veteran” who was a consistent performer with the ball in 2005/06 and improved his bowling average.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Gavin winning hook shot in the semi final against Ramsgate.

Nick’s outpacing and “soccering” the ball onto the stumps to run out a Ramsgate batsman after having just bowled the ball.

Sharon Parkinson leading the charge onto the ground after her son, Gavin, hit the winning boundary in the semi final.

The support and encouragement from 12C Green players and parents during the final overs of the semi final.

Michael Vitale’s batting to get us home in the outright win over Mortdale

Michael Vitale’s catch off his own bowling against ICC.

MEMORABLE QUOTES

“This is going to be a long year, we will be lucky to finish 5 th ” Joe Vitale after our second loss of the year. “It does not matter if we don’t win another game, at least we beat Ramsgate” Joe Vitale after our epic semi final win

SPECIAL THANKS

Marc Betbeder-Matibet and Anthony Cordi from 10C for coming to our aid during the final rounds and the semi final when we were short of players.

Liz Betbeder-Matibet for volunteering to score against ICC and in very trying conditions in the semi-final against Ramsgate.

All parents who were always willing to help out at both training and match days.

In closing a special thank you to all the parents who turned out in droves to support their son and the team every week. There may have been controversy this year in the behaviour of certain parents from various clubs, however I think our parents led the way in being very fair and accepting all decisions even when they may not completely agree.

See you all for the 2006/07 season.

Grand Finalists The early season training sessions, suggested we would need a lot of praying to win a match. Thankfully I was proved wrong by a very enthusiastic & determined 10C team. They adapted well to training and made great progress in all departments. No team can do well without the backup & support from the parents, which we had in bucket loads. Much of our success is owed to them. We set out at the beginning of the season to win at least one match. When we reached the semis, we set out to play our best against a team we had never beaten and we won. When we reached the Grand Final, we were determined not to get thrashed as our undefeated opponents had done to other teams, and we nearly beat them. We came off the field, not as losers of a Grand Final, but as high achievers exceeding even our own expectations and as participants of a truly exciting and memorable Grand Final that was fought out to the last wicket. Every parent/carer there showed great pride & joy as we came off the field, victorious in deeds at least, if not in the result. Congratulations to the 10C TEAM for exceeding all expectations, it was a season well played and enjoyed.

Matthew Iacono - Matthew had only two speeds, fast and very fast. Although there were some moments in the field when the concentration levels were found wanting, when it came to bat & bowl he was absolutely committed & determined. He established a formidable reputation as a partnership breaker with his express bowling. He kept the opposing batsmen on their toes. Although he didn’t score many runs, they were scored fast & furiously, helping the team greatly when our run rate had bogged down.

Joshua Tolmie - Small in stature, but determined in mind. One of our best runners between wickets, scored important runs at critical times. As one of our keepers he shows great promise for the future. His bowling early in the season was accurate and dependable. Josh also got quick runs at important times in our matches. He will turn into a fine talent in the future.

Carla Papac - Showed some great prowess with the bat early on in the season, and although missing for a few of the games, her contributions with both ball and bat proved invaluable. Again coming from the u8s, there is great potential ready to be unleashed. Next season should be a blinder for her.

Marc Betbeder-Matibet - A total newcomer, his first season of cricket started off slowly. Erratic bowling and batting initially, but all that was compensated for by his brilliant close in catching. Towards Xmas, a new bat and some powerhouse training over the break, saw Marc get amongst the runs, and develop into a fine attacking bowler. Towards the end, Marc’s bowling really improved, being extremely accurate and economical. Look for him next season as an outstanding bowling prospect and slasher of runs.

Patrick El Hindi - Another newcomer, he brought a fierce competitive nature and all round athletic ability to the team. One of our best all rounders in the team, his fielding, batting & bowling were a great asset to the team. He helped save a few matches with his excellent running & batting skills. His anticipation in the field set an example to all. Made important partnerships when it mattered and proved his worth to the team on more than one occasion.

Fatia Dennoui - A very good eye for batting and got among the wickets in the bowling. She was good value to the team, and shared in some good partnerships for the team. Although her bowling style was not of the classical mode, she got important wickets. As always we needed everyone to contribute to the team and Fatia always tried her best. Another year, will see her realize more of that untapped potential.

Amit Jaiswar - Another newcomer to the team, he developed slowly over the season. However as his confidence grew the bowling improved and the batting became more determined. Caused major headaches for our opposition in the semis & finals with 3 brilliant run-outs. Over the course of the season he has been one of the biggest improvers, and the future looks very bright and promising.

Raviv Jaiswar - Younger brother of Amit, did his best and although his bowling and batting was not up to the standards of the other team members, he helped keep partnerships together by not sacrificing his wicket. He always showed enthusiasm in the field and was there to help the team when we were short of players. His participation helped save many runs, and his contribution cannot be measured in just statistics.

Stefan Rajcevski - A newcomer, with loads of potential. The early training sessions showed Stefan to be somewhat technically awkward in batting & bowling. However, when he hits a ball, it is well and truly hit. He ended the season with the 3 rd highest batting aggregate, he has only begun to tap into his potential and I have no doubt he will be a very formidable player of the future. Took some big hits in the final, but showed

Page 30 KINGSGROVE CRICKET CLUB – MAY 2006 great fighting qualities to retake the field after earlier retiring hurt from a beam ball to the head. Great potential as a lethal all rounder, very much in the Ian Botham mould!!

Jessie Gagro - Without doubt one of the best players in the team,2 nd highest batting & bowling aggregate, as well as the strongest arm in the team. It was a pleasure watching Jessie in the field, or either batting or bowling. It is not often that you see such potential in players, he will undoubtedly be mentioned a lot in the score sheets of the future. In the last 2 games played outstandingly with the bat and ball. I will always remember that blazing 24 runs in the semi, which turned the game on its head.

Matthew Natoli - Played with 10c’s last year, and blossomed this year into a fine all rounder providing the team with a stable batting & bowling attack. He provided the team with confidence, and helped lay a solid foundation in many of the team’s games. In the field he provided a cool head , and maintained a high standard whether batting , bowling or fielding. He topped the bowling honours, and was not far behind Jessie for the all rounder award. Top season Matt.

James Cordi - Also played in the 10Cs last year, and showed huge improvement, to become one of our best in the bowling and batting department. Very much a confidence player, he started very shaky at the beginning of the season, but as it wore on, became more & more confident. Made a masterly 30no in the semis, and looked every inch a batsmen. As one of our main keepers, his skills behind the wicket saved many valuable runs and the team felt great comfort with him behind the stumps.

Anthony Cordi - Perhaps the live wire of the team, it was difficult to keep Anthony out of the match. He brought excellent catching skills to the team. As one of our reserve keepers, Anthony’s skills improved greatly over the course of the season. In terms of bowling, he also showed great skills with the ball and will be a force in the future. The batting department still needs some work, but it will get there I’m sure. Anthony’s enthusiasm in the field was a fantastic asset to have, the batsmen always knew he was there!!

Under 8 - Ken Marshall

Another season has finished and it was a particularly successful one for the under 8’s. We played 18 games in the season and won 12 and lost 6.

Every player performed to their utmost ability and they showed considerable improvement throughout the season.

Eight players started off the season Keith Chambers, Simon Beattie, Liam Blaxland-Walker, James Kelly, Daniel Mazzucco, Oliver Pang , Grant De Gouveia , Sacharan Sooriakumar and Martyn Blundell.

We picked up two more players mid season Adelina Pang (Oliver’s sister) and Phillip Sharf and their improvement was noticeable.

Grant and Martyn were called up to the 10C’s towards the end of the season and performed very well. Grant took his place in the grand final against Lugarno and they almost pulled off a massive upset but lost by a couple of wickets.

To those going into competition grades I wish you good times and good cricket.

A big thanks to an enthusiastic group of parents and grandparents.

I hope everyone had a good season and I hope to catch up with everyone in the coming season.

Ken

We congratulate the following players on their awards for effort, improvement, attendance, sacrifice, perseverance, sportsmanship, dedication, and reliability, and in some cases for having the statistics to go with all of the above. Well done on your fine season, but remember your fine season could not have been possible without someone taking catches for you, someone saving runs with good fielding, someone partnering your batting and someone encouraging you all the way to your prize. Remember to thank your coach, teammates and family for their support. You could not have done it without them.

Some may be on committees and coaches, whilst others may be from our community, but all show a willingness to get involved and help out.

MUCH THANKS AND APPRECIATION TO:

Ken MARSHALL - For the 3 rd year in succession Ken is a worthy recipient of this award. Ken continues to give so much of his time for the betterment of the club. Not only did Ken take on the role of Treasurer he also volunteered his time in coaching the under 8s and maintained the club’s equipment as gear steward. He was also involved in trophy and jacket selection for the end of year presentation.

“THE ALBERT “MAC” MCDOWELL AWARD FOR LOYALTY & SERVICE”

A new award was introduced in 2002/2003 and funded by Ray McDowell first President, Life Member and Founding Father of the Juniors. The award was to honour long serving Junior Players who have given and shown great loyalty and service to their teams and the club. The award recognizes the love these players have displayed for the playing of the game of cricket, their efforts, sacrifices and their achievements. These players must be completing their final junior year with the club. The award is named after Ray’s Father Albert whose love of cricket saw him represent his state when in primary school only to be forced to give the game away due to family circumstances. He eventually returned to play the game he loved in his twenties.

Andrew Powell – Andrew started playing cricket with Kingsgrove in 1999/2000 in the under 10's and has not missed a season since. A capable cricketer with bat and ball his love for the game has been evident from that first season when he took out the "All Rounder" award in the premiership winning 10C side. Whilst another premiership has eluded him his passion for the game continues. First and foremost a team player he takes as much pride in his team-mates achievements as he does in his own. We wish him every success in the future.

Tim West - Tim commenced his cricket journey in the 1997/98 season in the under 8s coached by the current Junior Club President. Over the years Tim gained numerous team awards and has consistently polled highly in the club “Cricketer of the Year” category. Although Tim has never been in a premiership winning team, his loyalty and dedication to those around him has always been of the highest calibre. We wish him every success in the future.

PERPETUAL TROPHY

JUNIOR PLAYER of the YEAR 2005/2006

The Player of the Year Award was resurrected in 2001/2002 after a number of years of absence. The award recognizes the outstanding achievement of an all rounder in the highest graded team in each age. Players considered this year come from the 16A, 14A, 12A and 10A Teams. The criteria for the award includes: Scoring over 100 runs aggregate in the season; Bowling more than 30 overs in a season; Wickets & Catches are also included. Wicket Keepers are exempt of this rule and are considered based on their catches/stumpings. The award is calculated on batting aggregate, batting average, bowling/fielding aggregate, bowling/fielding average and the number of games the player has batted in converted to a single total.

This year saw a group of 20 candidates eligible for the award. We congratulate this years leading candidates for being good enough to join this prestigious group of high achievers from our club.
