We are working remotely, fieldwork and research has been cancelled or postponed, and classes and meetings are being held virtually. In the home, many of our members are trying to work and parent simultaneously. Some have contracted the virus and been sick. In addition, the Black Live Matter movement has shone a stark spotlight on racial inequality and motivated a demanding cry for change. To say “These are uncertain times” is putting it mildly. But this time of flux provides an opportunity to effect positive change. Global CO2 emissions dropped over the past few months as people adapted to life at home, resulting in fewer cars on the road and fewer planes in the sky. Our innate ability to rapidly adapt is strong and our response to COVID demonstrates that we have the capacity to make large behavioral changes to reduce CO2 emissions and diminish the rate of climate change after the pandemic is over. Could this mark the beginning of society’s move toward a meaningful reduction in emissions? A slowing down of climate change would give coral reefs – and all natural ecosystems on the planet - the break they need to thrive and persist over the coming century. ICRS is committed to being part of the solution by making ICRS2024 50% virtual and by supporting regional meetings hosted by our Chapter organizations. Perhaps it is not so coincidental that, in the midst of the pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement has raised awareness about racial inequality and inequity across the world. At its core, the movement demands reflection on our present and historical flaws. As an international society, ICRS must do its part. We are committed to continuing to provide graduate student fellowships that are equitably distributed across our membership. We are also actively looking to recruit new members to ICRS Council and Officer positions (taking office January 2021) that will enhance the diversity of our elected members and broaden our collective conversations and actions. Patterson Edward Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute 44-Beach Road, Tuticorin – 628 001, Tamil Nadu, India [E-mail: [email protected]] Received 28 November 2012; revised 7 December 2012 In this study, the assessment of alcyonaceans was conducted in Tuticorin coast of the Gulf of Mannar during the period between 2010 and 2012 in 5 locations; Vaan, Koswari, Kariyachalli and Vilanguchalli islands and mainland Punnakayal patch reef. Average alcyonacean coral cover in Tuticorin coast was 6.76% during 2011-12 which was 5.61% during 2010- 2011. Percentage cover of alcyonacean corals increased in all the study locations; Kariyachalli 12.04 to 13.96%; Vilanguchalli 8.94 to 10.23%; Koswari 1.6 to 3.69; Vaan 0.53 to 0.72; mainland Punnakayal patch reef 4.95 to 5.21% was documented. In total, 15 species from 7 genera were recorded during the study period. Though anthropogenic threats in Tuticorin coast are comparatively high, the abundance of alcyonacean corals has increased considerably showing their resilience and adaptability. E-mails: [email protected], [email protected] 2Corresponding author Abstract Diadema setosum (Leske, 1778), a widespread tropical echinoid and key herbivore in shallow water environments is cur- rently expanding in the Mediterranean Sea. It was introduced by unknown means and first observed in southern Turkey in 2006. From there it spread eastwards to Lebanon (2009) and westwards to the Aegean Sea (2014). Since late 2016 spo- radic sightings of black, long-spined sea urchins were reported by recreational divers from rock reefs off the Israeli coast. Numerous attempts to verify these records failed; neither did the BioBlitz Israel task force encounter any D. setosum in their campaigns. Finally, a single adult specimen was observed on June 17, 2017 in a deep rock crevice at 3.5 m depth at Gordon Beach, Tel Aviv. Although the specimen could not be recovered, spine fragments sampled were enough to genet- ically verify the visual underwater identification based on morphology. Sequences of COI, ATP8-Lysine, and the mito- chondrial Control Region of the Israel specimen are identical to those of the specimen collected in 2006 in Turkey, unambiguously assigning the specimen to D.

Biology II and GeoBio-Center of LMU Munich, Germany Abstract The scientific names published for species and subspecies in the genus Acanthaster Gervais (Asteroidea: Valvatida: Acan- thasteridae) are reviewed, with particular attention to the A. planci species group (crown-of-thorn starfish, COTS). Several problems with earlier nomenclatural and bibliographic data are resolved. The available name for the type species of Acan- thaster in the original combination is Asterias echinites Ellis & Solander in Watt, 1786; the often-cited "Asterias echinus" and "Acanthaster echinus" are incorrect subsequent spellings, therefore unavailable. The scientific names and taxonomic concepts for species and subspecies in Acanthaster are compared to recently published, robust COI-barcoding clades. Two of four clades in the A. planci group can be named unequivocally, a third requires a neotype designation to decide which of two available names will be valid, and the fourth clade necessitates a new species description and name. The References section includes annotations explaining bibliographical data important to the nomenclatural evaluations. Im Vergleich zu anderen Ländern weisen die Korallenriffe Indonesiens die höchsten Schädigungen auf. Das zerstörende Fischen ist ein Hauptgrund für die Degradation der Korallenriffe in Indonesien, so dass das Gesamtsystem dieser Fangpraxis analysiert werden muss. Dazu wurden im Rahmen dieser Studie die Standortbedingungen der Korallen erfasst, die Hauptnutzungen mit ihren jeweiligen Auswirkungen und typischen Merkmale der Nutzungen bestimmt sowie die politische Haltung der gegenwärtigen Regierung gegenüber diesem Problemfeld untersucht.
