Sunday, July 1: Artwork Pick-Up Day 10:00 a.m. Art pick-up; coffee and light breakfast. On behalf of the Board of Directors, volunteers, staff, and especially the 11,000 clients whom AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) serves, welcome to the third annual Art Project Los Angeles. The year 2012 has been one filled with both victories and challenges. The former remind us of our capacity for success when we use all we know to fight this epidemic, even in communi- ties where it is most deeply entrenched. But the latter, too, reminds us that we still battle an elusive enemy: A virus that seems to move out of reach every time we close in on it. AIDS still has no cure. AIDS lacks even a basic vaccine. Right now, it cannot be stopped. And that adds up to one simple fact that we cannot deny: AIDS IS AN EMERGENCY. Long since the deaths of some of Hollywood’s brightest, like Rock Hudson and Freddie Mer- cury, HIV/AIDS continues to ravage communities of gay and bisexual men. Decades after the tragic death of Arthur Ashe and the infection of Magic Johnson, men of color (and particularly gay men of color) are at an unacceptably high risk of infection. And years since the advent of some of the most powerful and effective anti-AIDS drugs we have ever seen, many thousands continue to die, even right here in Los Angeles. Why, then, must so many more still face life – and even death – with HIV/AIDS? Put simply, one in five who is living with HIV/AIDS does not know that he or she lives with a disease that will spread and kill. That’s why APLA is working harder than ever in impacted communities like South Los Angeles to test and connect into care all living with the disease. It is both treatment for those who are HIV-positive and prevention strategy for those who aren’t. For the 60,000 Angelenos who are already living with HIV, we believe in the power of compas- sionate care – food, shelter, dental care and more – to allow them to live well with HIV. And from City Hall to the U.S. Capitol, our advocacy work gives hope of strong, sound AIDS policy. We are, therefore, grateful to have each of you. Each year, you support our work and insulate us against the changing misfortunes of government funding. You give of your art, your time, and your funds to ensure that we will never have to turn a single client away. And you stand with us as we collectively hope for a cure and as we fight like hell until then. Thank you for joining us at this very special event.
Craig E. Thompson Executive Director AIDS Project Los Angeles June 2012
Dear Guest,
We are pleased to welcome you to “Art Project Los Angeles,” our third annual art auction benefiting AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). To those who have attended past events, thank you so much for your continued support! For those new to Art Project – we’re ex- cited to have you and sincerely hope you enjoy yourselves. APLA is thrilled to once again be a part of a great event enabling expanded support for the many individuals benefiting from APLA’s outreach.
Our event committee deserves huge thanks for their dedication to Art Project – the success of the event over the last two years has demonstrated how much we can achieve with the hard work, determination, and support of an amazing team. Additionally, we would like to thank our wonderful artists, donors, sponsors and supporters. They are the true backbone of this endeavor, and without whom the auction wouldn’t be possible.
APLA’s network of programs and services provides life-sustaining care and comfort to many of the 60,000 Angelenos now living with HIV/AIDS. Whether through its network of food pantries and dental clinics (both the largest in the United States) or through its essential mental health and housing assistance services, APLA is often the only place for so many to turn. And through its HIV prevention programs and its fearless advocacy, APLA seeks to end HIV’s assault on our community.
Last, and most important, so much of the revenue to fund these critical programs comes directly from private donors like you, and attending Art Project Los Angeles is a fantastic way to demonstrate your support for APLA’s extensive mission.
Once again, we thank you for your attendance, your support, and your bidding! Bid early and often!
Sincerely,
Ron Valdez Mark Perrin Event Committee

(866) 981-1949 santamonicafiat.com MICHAEL BECKER IS A FRAUD
HE WAS BORN: Not in a trunk, not in the Princess Theater, not in Pocatello, Idaho and his name is not Judy Garland. He was born in a hospital bed at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia on January 8, 1938 and his name is Michael Becker.
HE GREW UP: Not on the Main Line, he did not go to prep school, did not ride to the hunt and is not a Philadelphia WASP. He is from an upper mid- dle class Jewish Family, his grandfather was a rabbi and from the time he was three years old all he wanted to do, and did do was draw, paint, design clothes, design rooms and design just about anything.
HE WAS EDUCATED: At Central High School in Philadelphia, the only high school in the United States that bestows a degree to select students, where he majored in art and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in art, but his name is not Thomas Eakins. He attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Art every Saturday from 1947 to 1955. Most people in Philadel- phia assumed he would become an artist except one: his father. His father had decided that his son would become an attorney because artists are usually gay and also starve to death, so he was sent to the University of Pennsylvania but did not receive a Fine Arts degree. He received a Bach- elor of Arts degree in Sociology. He received a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of Pennsylvania Law School where he studied as little law as possible but excelled in designing the yearbooks and all posters for all the events of the law school. In 1963 he was elected Outstanding Senior of the Year for his efforts as a leader, but he finished in the bottom third of the senior law school class.
HE WORKED: Not as a lawyer but as a trust administrator and became the Senior Vice President of a bank because he enjoyed working with the great art of the clients. In 1995 he became the president of the Los An- geles Trust Officers Association. For fun he travelled the world taking endless photos and became well known as a photographer, but of travel photos. He also went to UCLA extension and studied art, but at night.
HE RETIRED: In 1998 with back injuries resulting in surgeries, pain and ultimately insomnia. He began spending sleepless nights working with the travel photos he had taken, but not in Seattle. His only education in pho- tography is a few hours with some retired people teaching Photoshop on the cruise ships he was on. He does very little with Photoshop and relies only on cropping, some saturation of color and yes, his eye. He is self- taught and has no resume of any shows in any London gallery or museum.
He is Michael Becker, and he is a fraud.

The property listed in this catalogue will be offered and sold by AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). Any questions should be directed to AIDS Project Los Angeles and not to the auctioneer, who serves merely as agent for APLA in conducting the auction sale and participated on the following terms and conditions, as amended by any posted notices or oral announcements during the sale, which govern the sale of the property listed herein:
1. (a) Neither the auctioneer nor AIDS Project Los Angeles assumes any risk, liability or responsibility for the authenticity of the authorship of any property identified in this catalogue (that is, the identity of the creator of the period/culture source or origin, as the case may be, with which the creation of any property is identified herein).
(b) ALL PROPERTY IS SOLD “AS IS” AND AIDS PROJECT LOS ANGELES MAKES NO REPRESENTA- TION OR WARRANTY OF ANY KIND OR NATURE, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, WITH RESPECT TO THE CORRECTNESS OF THE CATALOGUE, NOR SHALL IT BE DEEMED TO HAVE ANY REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTY OF PHYSICAL CONDITION, SIZE, QUALITY, RARITY, IMPORTANCE, GENUINENESS, ATTRIBUTION, PROVENANCE OR HISTORICAL RELEVANCE OF THE PROPERTY. No statement in the catalogue or made at the sale or in any bill of sale or invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed such a repre- sentation or warranty or any assumption of liability. APLA makes no representation of warranty expressed or implied, as to whether the purchaser acquires any reproduction rights in the property. Prospective bid- ders should inspect the property before bidding to determine its condition, size and whether or not it has been repaired or restored. Descriptions of manuscripts should not be taken as implying or guaranteeing that the manuscript is complete unless specifically stated.
2. Any property may be withdrawn by APLA at any time before the actual sale.
3. Unless otherwise announced by the auctioneer at the time of sale, all bids are per lot as numbered in the printed catalogue.
4. AIDS Project Los Angeles reserves the right to reject a bid from any bidder. The highest bidder ac- knowledged by the auctioneer shall be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer shall have sole and final discretion either to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer and resell the article in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, APLA sale records shall be conclusive in all respects.
5. If the auctioneer determines that any opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the article offered, he may reject the advance.
6. On the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer or upon the expiration of the silent auction time period, the highest bidder shall be deemed to have purchased the offered lot subject to all of the conditions set forth herein and thereupon (a) assumes full risk and responsibility thereof, (b) will sign a confirmation of purchase thereof and (c) will pay the full purchase price therefor or such part as APLA may require, (d) All checks should be payable to AIDS Project Los Angeles. All property shall be removed from the premises by the purchaser at his expense no later than one (1) day following the sale. If not so removed, APLA at its discretion may send the property at the expense of the purchaser to a public warehouse for the account, risk and expense of the purchaser and such added charges will then be added to the purchase price of the object. If the foregoing conditions and other applicable conditions are not complied with, in addition to other remedies available to APLA by law, including without limitation, the right to hold the purchaser liable for the bid price, APLA at its option may either (a) cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages all the payments made by the purchaser or (b) resell the property on three days notice to the purchaser and for the account and risk of the purchaser, either publicly or privately, and in such event the purchaser shall be liable for payment of any deficiency, all other charges due hereunder and incidental damages.
7. The tax deductibility of any purchases should be taken up with your accountant.
8. Applicable state and local sales tax shall be applied to all purchases.
