The First Word My blood is red… and gold! Well it’s been a while…

Our last home game was well over a month ago… against Miramar. Since then we’ve been on a nice little cup run!

It really was a highlight for the players and supporters that shows that on our day we can compete and beat any side in the region.

And that is proof with both our Men’s and Women’s teams playing in the same leagues as leaders Upper Hutt.

Both Upper Hutt teams are unbeaten in their respective leagues and yet… our Men’s Premier scored a win and an unlucky draw conceding in the last minute at Harcourt Park.

And last weekend it was the turn of our Women’s Premier side who shared a 2—all draw in atrocious conditions at Upper Hutt.

The Upper Hutt Women’s side is chock full of ex- International, representative and Central League players and it was their first point dropped for the entire season.

So three visits to Harcourt and 3 games unbeaten!

It really does highlight that self belief and attitude are just as important as talent on the football field.

Enjoy the football today and enjoy our Stop Out hospitality after match. Chris Canton President

16th June 2012 Stop Out 5 vs Miramar Rangers 1 Match reports

With Miramar 7 points ahead of us, and the teams behind us 1 point off, today was a win at all costs scenario. Our frustrating start to the season has turned every week into a must win, but today was very important.

Being the middle of winter today was a typical Wellington day, freezing cold southerly and driving rain to add to the fun. This is what football is all about!

Right from kick off we adjusted to the conditions very well, playing our passing style to very good effect. We were really dominating and getting into danger- ous positions, though the slippery conditions were making it tough to get the Player / coach Steven Gulley final product we were looking for. Soon enough Fizz got onto the ball just outside the box, skipped past his man and slotted the ball home for a great goal.

1-0 up. Before we knew it was 2, some good work from Yatesy to get to the by line and cut the ball back to Jake to tap in at the far post, a quality team goal. 2-0 at halftime and we were really on top, the talk to the lads was to keep the foot on the pedal, and not let Miramar into the game!

We came out with the same attitude in the second half, really taking the game to Miramar despite playing into the howling southerly. We went 3-0 up after some more good work from Yatesy leading to another Jake tap in at the far post. From here the game started to get sloppy and our standards dropped, which resulted in us conceding a soft goal, frustrating to say the least!

Conceding gave us a wakeup call and we made it 4-1 when Martin Packer bent a free kick into the top corner. We rounded the game off with a counter attack where Yatesy beat his man and his shot from outside the box came off the crossbar to land at the feet of, you guessed it, Jake Theron!

A hat trick for Jake from a combined 6 yards, credit to him for being in the right place. A 5-1 win and a good performance from the lads, bring on Upper Hutt in the cup next week! MOM- Martin Packer

. Stop Out 4 vs Upper Hutt 2 – Chatham Cup

When we drew Upper Hutt in the cup the lads were over the moon, we have built a good rivalry over the last few years and this was a big chance for us to get one up over them. Upper Hutt are top of the league and are yet to be beaten, but we knew that we would head to Harcourt in a confident mood given our run of results in the cup.

The locals , lining the ground with orange and black balloons, aof Upper Hutt had really put in the effort to make the day a big occasionnd turning up in large numbers to create a great atmosphere.

We got off to a horror start. A long ball slipped through our back four and into the path of their striker, who dribbled towards Vinnie and managed to scoop the ball into the net, a great finish and a tough way to start the game.

The way we reacted to the goal was outstanding, and within 2 minutes we had equalised. We worked the ball down the left and released Brandon Tai who put in a superb cross that found Fizz at the far post, who showed great composure to take a touch and slot the ball home. 1-1 after 6 minutes! This got our confidence up and from here we really started to control the game. We worked the ball out to Jake who cut in and chipped a ball inside to release Cherbel ‘why aren’t Brazil at the Euros’ Kouchaba, who took a brilliant touch into his path and buried the finish. An out- standing piece of skill from a 14 year old kid in a huge game.

We were on fire and soon after Ali Yates had made it 3. After receiving the ball with his back to goal he turned, ran at his defender, pulled out a shimmy that bamboozled the defender, then laced (shanked) a left footed shot into the back of the net. Brilliant from Yatesy, and the way he turned on the after burners during his celebration was something else. 3-1 up and it got better from there. Some more great work down the right from Jake Theron saw him whip in a cross that the Upper Hutt centre back could only clear straight up in the air, to fall for Yatesy who headed in from a tight angle. A fantastic double for Ali, the big kumara was in for a treat tonight! We went into half time 4-1 up.

We came out in the 2nd half knowing that if we played smart the game was ours. Upper Hutt started to throw players forward in an attempt to pull a goal back, and started putting us under real pressure. At times we dealt with the pressure well, and at times we didn’t. Vinnie was doing a great job in goal dealing with cross after cross, but with 15 to go the pressure finally told. By this stage we had Cherbel cramping up and Beeza hobbling around on one leg and after a goal mouth scramble Upper Hutt managed to bundle one in.

From here we closed the game out well and got through to the final whistle for a 4-2 win.An outstanding performance from5 the lads, who continue to step up on the big occasions. The cup dream continues!

July 15th Upper Hutt 2 Stop Out 2 (2-2) Women’s Premier Macdougall 2 (incl 1 pen)

Sadly no one told Mother Nature that there was going to be a women’s football spectacle at Harcourt, the league’s top two teams set to battle it out to decide the fate of this year’s league title. Instead the pitch is heavy and very wet & the weather isn’t letting up at all. It rains all game – and conditions underfoot just get worse.

The opening spell of the match is all about 22 players learning the limitations of the conditions, balls played along the ground won’t go more than a few yards – and most players end up on their backside at some stage, soaked to the skin & coated in mud. Both teams quick to work out that the lovely “tic tac” football of Mediterranean Europe won’t work in weather that demands the kick and rush of the English game.

Up front Tara is a hive of activity, relishing the work de- manded of her role – and with the two Mel’s keen to support every break we get some forward momentum. It’s the dynamic Mel Mac who opens the scoring with a cracking finish from outside the box. UH have racked up 12 wins from 12 starts this winter, & they’re quick to respond to our opener – exploiting the conditions with a well taken finish as the ball gets in behind the defence.

Down the flanks we quickly learn to play to the conditions, Kathryn and Maddy work hard on the right in tandem – over on the left, Natasha & Steph throwing themselves into everything – puddles, tackles & wading pools. April is excellent value in her “minder” role – and it takes some off the ball skullduggery that the ref misses for UH to take the lead. That only fires the girls up – but they keep cool heads – instead it’s one of the UH girls who’s fortunate to stay on the pitch despite a series of indiscretions. The last one is a stray elbow at a set piece and we are awarded a penalty. Encouragement from vocal UH supporters on the balcony - but Mel Mac is cool and calm, all class – and the keeper has no chance as we make it 2-2. At the back there’s sterling work from Soph’ and Dani’ – both walking on water at times to snuff out UH attacks; while in behind Kath the mud lark is loving all the attention & the work.

Onto the second half, and there’s always one eye on the watch – but the ref surprises the sideline and plays past the 60 minute mark and we now have a game that the result will stand. The conditions at the club house end get worse, and it’s all thrills and spills at times - great work from Kath and the defensive team – just staying upright is a challenge.

Out on the left there’s some superb balls played forward by Kelsey & ‘Tash that provide our best chances – Nicola is now the greyhound trying to gather, control and make something of these opportunities. We do go close a few times – but can’t add to the score sheet – while at the other end we also keep our goal intact. By the latter stages it’s getting dark – car lights glow on the sideline – and a game played in good spirit comes to an end.

While the result means we pass our Premiers mantle over to our hosts we can’t be more proud of all of the girls – a performance to savour and a match we won’t forget in a hurry. We join our hosts for a spot of after match hospitality, glad to get warm and dry at last. We congratulate them on a fine season and wish them well for the CL playoffs that I’m sure they’ll prevail in. Have to smile when we note a couple of their 2013 prospects in the club house after? – What, no LH after-match to be at? Player of the day – hard to fault anyone’s endeavor, but 3pts for the sterling work of Kath in ridiculous conditions – 2pts for Tara, the physical nature of the battle right up her alley – 1pt each for the two Mel’s, just amazing in their endeavor and their skill despite the conditions… and that’s not taking anything away from the fabulous work of Soph’ and Dani in the heart of the back line. Take a bow one and all ladies!

The Last Word! Life-long Stop Out fan Michael Barton Football as theatre.

shares his views Sadly, our Chatham Cup run for the 2012 season is on the over. Our dreams shattered like glass after a harsh footballing world! blow. Mind you, the run whilst it lasted was pretty

good. Full of drama and endeavour. It reminded me of a friend’s description of plays by William Shakespeare. If I had to choose my play it would have to be the match with Upper Hutt United.

To start with there was our Act I. Usually this is where the action is incited. In our case this is where we went one goal down. At this point we could fight back or lose our spirit, our heart and go into mortal decline. This then leads us into Act II, the turning point. For me this was the moment when, shortly after Upper Hutt scored, Jamie Mason and Andy Le Prou met in that big challenge. As I saw it, if

Jamie got it wrong we would have been two goals down.

Jamie triumphed. We were not mere lambs being led to slaughter.

From there on it was into Act III that of the climax. In our play this occupied the first half from Jamie’s tackle onwards. With the villain shoved to one side our values and heart came to the fore. We roared! (... in Blackadder Shakespearean actors roar!) Four goals in the first half. Not an ordinary four goals either but goals of great quality, crafted by worthy artisans.

As in any good play a heroic figure emerged, and in this case is was Cherbel Khouchaba. At, depending on who you talk to or which newspaper you read, fourteen years of age he strode the field like a Colossus, smiting the enemy with a fine blow. That is, he came on as a ‘sub’ and scored to put us in front.

This led us to intermission. It was during the intermission that I realised that this was the first Stop Out match Chris Canton, my sister Sue and I had been together at in nearly thirty years. That is purely by the way.

Following the intermission we were now at Act IV, that of the ‘falling action’. It was our game to lose from here. We had set our marker and challenged Upper Hutt to come out and show their mettle. It may have been ‘too big a mountain for them to climb’ or perhaps their ‘hearts had been shattered’? Anyway, they plugged away at us and found a tiny niche in which to try and ‘plunge their dagger’. They did not, even though they scored one further goal.

Then there it was looming, Act V, the resolution. Not for us booming drums and clashing cymbals, the sun setting all golden over some horizon, but the sweet sound of the referee’s final whistle. It was over... we, Stop Out, had triumphed. Joy abounded. Put simply, that was the best cup 13 tie I had been to in years. It was excellent!

In truth, the game was a lot closer than the score-line suggested and that was mainly due to Mike. There were a number of players that were not far behind Mike, and on another day could have picked up the award. For those of you that aren't aware, when we got back to the club Tawa's Manager was on the phone asking what the result was, and after realising we had pipped them for promotion congratulating us on the win.

I have to say a massive thank you to Cory for reffing; Cory did a magnificent job of controlling the game from the first whistle to the last, and as a result we were able to play our game (which we did very well for long periods of time throughout the match) instead of getting tangled in controversy. I know that Marist too were pleased with Cory's performance even if they were a bit worried when we let them know he would be reffing!

I also have to say a massive thanks to the guys who came down with their boots just in case, and those who simply came to watch us and show their support. It was very motivating to hear the cheers when we scored, and provided a real lift to us when we did something well!

Saturday is a bit of a blur so if I have missed anyone off the list please accept my apologies but thanks to Bryan, Mike Eng, Mike Murphy, Ed Hunter, Darren Priddey, all of Hayden Taylor's family and Pete.....your support was invaluable!
