Students are awarded praise points (previously known as house points) for doing something well. This might be for working really hard on a piece of work and behaviour, helpfulness towards staff or other students, or anything else that staff and prefects deem to be deserving of points. How does ePraise work? Staff or prefects issue praise points using stickers containing unique codes. Students then input their codes into the ePraise system and they turn into praise points, which can be spent in the ePraise shop on a number of different rewards. There is a suggestions tab for prizes for the shop, these suggestions are taken on board and acted upon if possible.

Points can be spent on a variety of different items such as table tennis bats and balls, pens and pencils, erasers and other useful stationery. There is an option to donate points to charitable causes, or tickets can be bought for entry into the prize draw to win prizes such as an Urban Beauty Vanity Case, Beats headphones and even a mountain bike!

Principal’s Commendation Award At Northampton Academy, we like to recognise outstanding students. In addition to our ePraise system, we have our Principal’s Commendation Award.

The thing I am most proud of is that over 30% of the ePraise points have been spent on altruistic rewards, such as mosquito nets for the third world, rather than anything that would directly benefit the students themselves. This is a testament to what I see every day at the Academy: young people who care deeply about the world and other people and wish to make a difference in their own modest way.”

RSC Theatre Visit A group of Sixth Form drama students had the opportunity to visit the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. The visit gave students a unique introduction to the world of theatre with opportunities to work alongside staff and artistic teams behind the scenes at the RSC. Candidates followed the processes involved in bringing an RSC production to the stage, focusing on The Tempest, which is currently being directed by RSC Artistic Director, Gregory Doran.

Students worked within: Scenic Arts - Building, painting and designing the set. Digital - Working on live motion capture (CGI) and 3D projection. Marketing and Promotions - Interviewing the actors and creating promotional and marketing material (posters, tickets and flyers).

This all went towards a mini production of Act 1 from the Tempest which took place at The Royal Shakespeare Company’s ‘The Other Place’ in Stratford-upon-Avon. Music Assemblies This term our music students have been showing off their talents before assembly each morning. We have had singers, drummers, pianists and even a xylophone player. The music has been uplifting and provides a great start to the day! Videos are available to view on our Facebook and Twitter feeds.

Each student who participated received a certificate and awards were handed out. This was a highly successful evening which allowed the Year 9 students to show off their talent to family and friends.

A Christmas Cracker Academy guests enjoyed an end of year music and drama extravaganza in December, which showed off the talents of students from all year groups. We were treated to many performances including music solos, songs from the choir, percussion and woodwind groups and two fabulous dramatic performances: The Snow Queen, adapted by Mrs. Evelyn Merrit from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, and 40 Thieves, an original and modern Victorian Pantomime performed by the Sixth Form drama students. Year 11 Rehearsals are now well underway for Sherlock, our next drama production. Year 11 GCSE Music students have been working very hard over the last couple of months on their performance unit of work. This has seen students performing as a solo act and also as part of an ensemble. During parts of lesson time, as well as students own time after school, the Year 11s have been practising their performances to make sure they are able to complete their coursework in front of live audiences in a series of evening concerts. All students did really well and we are extremely proud of what they have accomplished. The last performance evening was on Wednesday 8th March and Miss Davenhill welcomed parents and carers along to support the fantastic work of the students.

A lot of positives were taken from the competition in terms of working as a team and an insight into possible career paths, although the team didn’t quite manage to secure a place in the grand finale, falling just outside the top two.

Computer Science teacher Ricky Prince commented: “Students were really engaged and the feedback from them was that they have learned a lot in terms of problem-solving skills, teamwork and working under pressure. This was the first time the Academy has competed in this competition and thanks to the team’s hard work, they were able to bring home a 1st place trophy for their Space Project Presentation. When they accepted the award you could see how proud they were to achieve an accolade for all their hard work.”

Mufti Day and Cake Sale In November, Northampton Academy supported Children in Need by holding a whole school Mufti Day. All students and staff arrived at school in their own clothes in exchange for a £1 donation. Students are always very excited to come to school without their uniform, and they love to see the staff in their ‘normal clothes’. The school raised £982.94 from this event and a cake sale, which was organised by the School Council. Mr. Parnell’s Makeover Student councillors persuaded Mr. Parnell, to allow them to spray his hair in rainbow colours.

The event took place in the assembly hall at break time, with students purchasing tickets for 20p to watch. All proceeds of this event, along with a sweetie jar raffle the students organised, went to Northampton General Hospital Chemotherapy Ward. A total of £230 was raised which is fantastic!

When asked how they came up with the idea, students said: “We wanted to raise some money for this charity, which is close to our hearts, and we thought the colours would really suit Mr. Parnell.”

Before the event took place, Mr. Parnell was looking a bit worried, saying: “It’s not so much the hair spraying I’m worried about, it’s the rest of the day. I have a number of important meetings later.”

Organised by the Student Leadership Team, students across the academy donated a total of 147 shoe boxes filled with toys, books, toiletries and other such items, which will be sent out internationally to less fortunate children of all ages. In addition, students have raised more than £230 to cover the postage.

Naomi Francis, Head of Year 13, said: “Operation Christmas child has been a fantastic success. We have thoroughly enjoyed the experience which has shown how generous students and staff at our school are. We have all come together to help make Christmas more special for others. The commitment from the students has been overwhelming and the student leadership team have spent a lot of their own time wrapping and packing boxes. It really shows that Christmas is a time for giving.”

Students across the academy relished the opportunity to take part in this project. Hollie English, Deputy Head Girl, commented: “I’m so proud of the school coming together to help those that are less fortunate. It has been such a humbling experience and I have enjoyed leading the team on this initiative.”

Matthew Bates (Head Boy) said he was “overwhelmed with the number of boxes collected and proud to do our bit for the wider community”.

Swimming for Sweden After swimming since the age of seven, Northampton Academy Year 12 Sixth Form student Marcus Johnson revealed how he eyes up the prospect of being an Olympian!

Marcus holds his family accountable for his fervour of swimming. His older sister began paddling in the pools at seven years old and he soon followed in her footsteps. Subsequently, he developed a passion for the water and his frame became a frequent figure in the waves of his local pool.

Before his age reached double-figures, Marcus was already winning prestigious competitions. He represented Northampton at the County Championships and left the poolside with the paramount prize.

He progressed as a swimmer, moving up the squads in his club from Silver to Gold and even Olympic. At 15, he joined the City of Milton Keynes Swimming Club. This developed his talent further, making him a swimmer of national-standard. He now competes in a variety of events, including the 4x200m relay, 400m and 1500m.

Humble Marcus is now an incredibly established and valued member of the CMK swimming team. His name regularly appears on the CMK club website, with recent published In simple terms, the time and effort is worth it.
