ll die hard Dodger fans can surely remember Joey Amalfitano (from San Pedro, CA). He was ’s 3rd base for 16 years. I feel like I’m now running right at Joey and am hoping to get waived home for my final few months as your President. It was been quite an experience and I truly feel honored to have served as your President for 2018. More final comments to come as

I hope to slide into December.

2019 PVGC PRESIDENT, BRADEN TURNBULL As is our custom, the Board elects a President for the next year at its regular October meeting, and Braden Turnbull was elected Club President for 2019. It has been a pleasure to serve with Braden for the past two years and I am confident that he will provide solid leadership throughout the year. The remainder of the Club Officers (Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary) will be elected at the next Board meeting in November. Next year’s Board Chairs & Braden will then begin the process of staffing the various standing committees by soliciting volunteers from the membership. You will be receiving communication regarding this from the club and I would encourage you to volunteer your time and expertise for the benefit of PVGC – as you have always done in the past.

BUD OAKLEY TOURNAMENT We recently completed the annual Bud Oakley tournament in October. John (Red) Stephenson, Sid Croft and Mark Pfiel who all personally knew Bud Oakley, paid a heartfelt tribute at the tournament kick-off dinner to Bud’s generosity and lasting legacy to our club. We have learned a lot about Mr. Oakley and his enormous contribution to our club. His assignment of his lease to the club members of PVGC is why we have our club today and is definitely worthy of being honored by an annual tribute tournament. And that is only one of Bud’s contributions to PVGC.

Jim, Pat, now David & their staff continue to be committed to providing excellent experiences for members at theclub’s annual membership tournaments. 2018 Bud Oakley fielded a near record number of 116 contestants even with the Dodgers in the World

Series at the same time. There was strident competition and great times had by all.

BUSINESS MEETING I am writing this message prior to the Annual Business meeting scheduled for November 14th, which will focus on the accomplish- ments the club made this year. As we take time off from our busy lives to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends, I would like to express my gratitude for the diligent work of our management, staff and volunteer members. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family – I hope it is special! —Mark Smith

In just over five short years, we’ll be celebrating the 100th anniversary of our Club, which is something we’ve already begun to address internally. Recently it me that this month includes a different centennial that represents something far more impactful.

As you all know, the “war to end all wars” did not turn out to be so, given what erupted once again around the globe a mere 20 years later. But November 11 of this month is the centennial of the signing of the armistice to end World War I, and out of respect to the end of that conflict we now celebrate Veteran’s Day and honor those who have served in our military.

To help honor those who have served we’ll once again be conducting a ceremonial flag ceremony, taps, and 3-gun salute on our plaza at 11:45am on Sunday, November 11. The Honor Guard will consist of veterans of the Vietnam War, and the ceremony will provide not just a moment of patriotism, but a special moment of reflection and appreciation for our servicemen and servicewomen.

In that spirit, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those Club Members and the members of our community who served - or currently serve - in our armed forces. We’re so used to being the world leader militarily that sometimes it’s easy to take such for grant- ed. But we couldn’t be the last remaining world superpower without the leadership of our amazing men and women in uniform, both past and present, and for their service I will be ever grateful. —David Conforti, PGA

Breast Cancer Research Foundation Our 2018 PVGC "Golfers for the Cure" tournament benefiting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation was very successful thanks to the participation and generous support of our members and local businesses. A special thank you to our Tournament Sponsors, Hole Sponsors, and donors who made significant contributions to help us raise over $17,000 for BCRF. These PVGC tournament funds will support continuing research to help find a cure for this devastating disease that affects so many of our friends and loved ones. Thank You! —Dr. Patrick Cahill , Jackie Cahill and Anne Rissler, Chairpersons

The ghosts and goblins on the fairways and greens at PVGC we scared away by the blistering hot play of our members, as we had many fine rounds and a plethora of great shots in October. We’ll start with some great shots. Tim Dickins hit a big drive and a perfect putt on the 13th hole at Brookside Golf Club, for a sweet eagle. Bob Healy made an awesome eagle on #3 and then lipped out for eagle on #9 and had to settle for a kick in birdie. Bob Alberts parred #13, #14, #15 and #16, on his way to an incredible 41. Karen Mabli made a deuce on #14 with two perfect shots. Chris Hutchison unleashed quite possibly, the longest drive in the history of the PVGC on #1, to capture the longest drive trophy in the Chadwick Tournament. We also had some great rounds to report last month. Declan Schultz shot two over par and finished 3rd out of 45 players in a Junior High Golf event. Sue Myers shot a career low 97. Frank Clark carded a smooth 78, his best since shoulder surgery. Chris Riegel made three birdies on the front and shot a smoking 36. Pat Greene shot a concrete solid 41, on the front side. Pam Secor shot her career best round, a wonderful 91. The shot of the month is shared by Jae Yu and Henry Schwake. Jae hit a perfect shot on #2 from the Black Tees to card an incredible ace. Henry Schwake made an ace on the 8th hole, while playing in the 1st round of Bud Oakley Tournament. Great shots gentleman. The round of the month goes to Doug Young. Dougie was on fire, making five birdies and carding a smoking hot 69! Great playing Doug!! Keep Shooting for the Stick! —Scott Talbot

November 2018 BARRANCA Page 3 In 1996, Betsy King received the William and Mousie Powell Award, given each year since 1986 by the LPGA Tour to a player "whose behavior and deeds best exemplify the spirit, ideals and values of the LPGA." The recipient is selected annually by a vote of LPGA Tour members. In 1996, PVGC hosted our first Ladies Collegiate Golf Tournament now known as the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. February 2 - 5, 2019, will mark the 24th Year of this event at Palos Verdes Golf Club and we are very honored that Betsy King will be our guest and featured speaker at the Dinner following the College Am event on Saturday, February 2, 2019. Ms. King, an alumna of Furman University which is making their second appearance at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, will also participate as a player in the College Am that day starting at 12:30.

After a trip to Africa in 2005, Betsy King, right, partnered with Debbie Quesada to create Golf Fore Africa to help provide clean water to people in the Western Province of Zambia.

Betsy King won 34 LPGA victories and 39 times worldwide including 6 majors. She was a member of the U.S. Solheim Cup team five times and was Captain in 2007. She was the LPGA money leader and Player of the Year in 1984, 1989 and 1993 and she won the Vare Trophy (low LPGA scoring average) in 1987 and 1993. When she won the 1992 LPGA Championship, she posted rounds of 68- 66-67-66. It was the first time any golfer had posted four rounds in the 60s at an LPGA major. Ms. King has been a tireless worker for charitable causes, organizing Habitat for Humanity building projects and working in former Soviet bloc countries with orphan relief agencies. In 2006 she founded Golf Fore Africa, a charity dedicated to building 600 fresh water wells in remote villages in Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia. The cost to build a well is $15,000, and in 2017 Ms. King pledged $1.3M of her own money to help end the global water crisis. We are pleased to have Furman University and their alumna, Betsy King, at our 24th annual tournament. Our competition for 2019 is again the best in women’s college golf. Our 16 team field features 10 of the top 15 including the top three (USC, Texas, Florida) according to the November 1 Golfstat college rankings. —Ron DeFrees Tournament Director
