Le Petit2 Théâtre de Sherbrooke: A Letter for Elena(Pho to : Jean-Charles Verchère) Dear Delegates, Guests, Showcasing Artists, and IPAY members,

On behalf of the staff and the Board of Directors of IPAY, we welcome you to Showcase 2019. “We are delighted to be returning for our second consecutive year in Philadelphia, IPAY’s new hometown, and the traditional land of the Lenape Delaware First Nations people.

Showcase is a gathering place—a place for our global community to share our work, our stories, and our perspectives. Showcase is a place to be inspired and a place to learn; it’s a place to listen, watch, and participate. We are honored that you have all joined us here as we continue to serve and support the professional field of performing arts for young people.

Throughout this year, “impact” has been our touchstone. What parts of Showcase are most impactful to delegates? How do the different elements impact different niches of our sector? How do the productions we see at Showcase impact young people in communities across the world? How can we measure the impact that we, as an organization, have upon the sector?

While you are on your journey throughout the week, we hope that you are inspired and influenced by what you see. We hope that you take home new insights, ideas, practices and connections, and that by gathering with your colleagues, you are rejuvenated and return home ready to create and present impactful work for your audiences.

In the spirit of our KINDLING focus on IMPACT, we invite you to share your impact stories with us and your global colleagues.

Thank you for gathering with us once again.

Jeremy “Boomer” Stacey IPAY Executive Director

Terina-Jasmine “TJ” Alladin IPAY Managing Director

1 On behalf of IPAY’s Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to welcome you to IPAY Showcase 2019!

Since November of 2016, I have been even more grateful for this international network of artists, presenters, agents, and audiences for their courage to persevere in the face of growing nationalism sweeping across the globe. IPAY is a community where we recognize the value of inclusion, diversity, and the free exchange of ideas. We recognize that aesthetic values differ from region to region, but we all share an appreciation for a good story that’s well told and for thoughtful design that’s well executed.

When you’re immersed in the IPAY community, you’re a participant in a complex ecosystem that works to connect young people around the world with vibrant experiences that activate empathy and cultivate creativity. Over the next few days, we will bear witness to the transformative potential that the performing arts can have in the lives of young people, and in our own. We will grapple with challenging content and delight in whimsy. We will share meals and walks from venue to venue together. We will disagree and yet still celebrate. We will exhaust ourselves and yet be renewed.

I invite those who are longtime members to seek out the new faces in the crowd and welcome them. Be a resource and a companion. For those who are new to the IPAY community, I invite you to engage fully. Your voice is important and we value what you have to contribute to the conversation, no matter where you are in your journey.

My heartfelt thanks to our diligent and talented IPAY staff, our board members who volunteer countless hours of their time in service to the cause, and our community partners in Philadelphia and beyond. I also offer thanks to each and every delegate who is here with us this week. You are the pollinators who will carry your experiences from this week into the larger universe, and for that, I am ever grateful.

Have an extraordinary Showcase 2019!

Wendy Bable President, IPAY Board of Directors

2 IPAY SPARK PRE-CONFERENCE

Tuesday, January 15

IPAY’s SPARK Pre-Conference program is a full-day of conversation and idea sharing prior to the full Showcase. SPARK has been designed to provide a smaller-scale meeting place for regional, national and international artists, presenters, educators and practitioners in the field of young audiences. The program is intended to create space for a concentrated investigation of new ideas, challenges, and innovation in the field.

SPARK 2019 kicked off this year’s KINDLING focus by diving into what IMPACT means to us as professionals working to create, present and support performing arts from an artistic and educational perspective. How do we remove barriers and borders to work more collaboratively to impart true impact on our audiences, through our art, education and community engagement? What does impact look like and how do we tell when it has been achieved?

Participants engaged with colleagues from the , Canada and around the world through a mix of keynote and panel presentation, open dialogue and roundtable discussion, and hands-on workshop. After a collective opening gathering, attendees had the option to choose from multiple SPARK sessions, including artistic and education focused workshops.

This year, we welcomed SPARK attendees from all over the world, as well as our hometown community of Philadelphia. SPARK Pre-Conference isn’t just for Showcase Delegates! Anyone interested in professional performing arts for youth is invited to register and share in the conversation.

We hope you’ll join us next year for IPAY SPARK Pre-Conference. We want your voice at the table!

9 Territory Welcome

Every community owes its existence and vitality to generations from around the world who contributed their hopes, dreams, and energy to making the history that led to this moment. Some were brought here against their will, some were drawn to leave their distant homes in hope of a better life, and some have lived on this land for more generations than can be counted. Truth and acknowledgement are critical to building mutual respect and connection across all barriers of heritage and difference. We begin this effort to acknowledge what has been buried by honoring the truth. We are standing on the ancestral lands of the Lenape Delaware People. We pay respects to their elders, past and present. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies of violence, displacement, migration, and settlement that bring us together here today.

Thank you to the US Department of Arts and Culture for their leadership in creating and sharing “Honor Native Land: A Guide and Call to Acknowledgement.” Please visit https://usdac.us/nativeland to download your free copy to learn how you can and why you should begin this practice at any and all public events.

11 Selection Process

Showcases: The selection process developed by IPAY, while subjective, is founded on a desire to create an equitable balance for the showcasing and presentation of professional programming for young audiences that reflects the needs of presenters, agents, artists, and educators.

Through an extensive process, the IPAY selection committee—comprising leaders in the field of family programming—meet for a three-day face-to-face review of the applications. Their goal is to create programming balanced with international arts disciplines, reflecting diversity in age range, performing arts genres, trends, and audience appeal—with a common denominator of high artistic standards. They provide a forum for the range of national and international work that is being created at the time, focusing on quality work that is appropriate for a variety of venues and markets.

When making final selections, the committee has agreed upon the following criteria* for quality: • The work reflects an intrinsic artistic integrity. • The work demonstrates an overall artistic rationale with regard to form, direction, music, choreography, design, technical aspects, and casting. • The work is created and performed by professionals. • The work is fresh, innovative, relevant, and appropriate for youth, young adult, and family audiences.

* Adapted from the “Keynotes on the Seven Criteria for Quality” developed by the Danish Association of Theatre for Children.

Spotlights: Spotlights provide additional opportunities for artists to have their work seen at Showcase, and are curated as part of the Selection Committee’s review of all applications.

Spotlights include a mixture of 20-minute live SHOW Spotlights (low-tech excerpts) and 5-8-minute TELL Spotlights (descriptions of work). All Spotlighting artists must have representation in the Exhibit Hall.

Sponsored Stages: Sponsored Stages present their work as a benefit of a lottery-based Sponsorship. The work Sponsored Stages present has not been reviewed or selected by the Showcase Selection Committee.

13 Showcase Photo and Video Policy

IPAY Photography and Video Agreement This is a reminder that at the time of registration for IPAY Showcase 2019, you agreed to our Photography and Video Agreement, which states:

I understand that IPAY will be taking photographs and shooting video throughout the Showcase Event for archival and publicity purposes. I understand and hereby grant permission that my image may be used for these purposes.

IPAY may be live-streaming some professional development sessions and other events at Showcase 2019. By attending any IPAY Showcase 2019 events you are consenting to potentially being shown in a live-stream video.

Performance Videography and Photography Policy No photography or videography of any kind is allowed at any performance during IPAY Showcase 2019. Out of respect for the companies that have been selected to Showcase and Spotlight, we expect that all delegates will refrain from taking photos or recording any portion of the performances. It is a distraction for the other audience members and the artists on stage, violating IPAY’s values of respect and community. In many cases, it also contravenes labor agreements under which some of these artists work. No matter the intended use of the images, photography and videography are not permitted.

While we recognize the desire to capture even just a few minutes of ‘live footage,’ we ask instead that you go and speak with the artist, agent or manager. In most cases, they will have video and/or photos of their work available upon request. It is a wonderful way to connect and network.

We encourage you to post photos and videos from other IPAY Showcase 2019 sessions and events that don’t include live performance, on social media and our Mobile Conference App Activity Stream.

If you have any questions or comments about this policy, please speak with Managing Director, TJ Alladin, during the conference.

55 Kindling 2019:IMPACT

2019 marks the seventh season of Kindling at IPAY Showcase. Launched at Showcase 2013 in Philadelphia with a focus on Creative Catalysts, Kindling celebrates antd explores individuals and organizations who are pushing the boundaries of performing arts for young audiences. Kindling continues to be a platform for open discussion and dialogue—a place to spark, question, and share ideas and dreams for the development of our entire sector.

This year we turn our focus to IMPACT. We all strive to create impact in the experiences we produce or present. Exactly what kind of impact are we are looking for, and how will we know when it happens? As connection points within a larger creative ecosystem, how do we work together to realize our full potential for making meaningful, lasting impact?

Kindling Keynote: Capturing Impact Lindsey Buller Maliekel (USA) – Director of Education/Public Engagement, The New Victory Theater

Based on Intrinsic Impact research pioneered at WolfBrown (2012), The New Victory Theater, their teaching artists, and the WolfBrown researchers collaborated to develop a comprehensive approach that tracks young people’s immediate experience of the performances and the potential impact of theatrical experiences on their socio-emotional growth. This is a deliberate departure from past research, which often links theater learning to attendance, literacy, or rising test scores. The study also created theatrically-inspired approaches to collecting data, in addition to using basic research tools (1,500 measurement booklets and 5,000 post-show surveys). In this session, find out how complex, rich, and diverse performances change the way young audiences feel, relate, and create, and how your productions are probably doing it, too!

57 Kindling 2019:IMPACT

Kindling Keynote: Wow! Whoops! Whee! Me?: Impact in Contemporary Circus Ruth Juliet Wikler (Canada) – Artistic Programming & Partnership Development, TOHU/Montréal Complètement Cirque Festival; Curator & Producer, BOOM Arts (Portland)

Circus, of all the performing arts, is the gold standard when it comes to audience engagement. From medieval street performances to PT Barnum’s sideshows, from menageries to one- and three-ring touring circuses of yore, circus has broken through the fourth wall to amaze, thrill, worry, delight, and captivate audiences of all ages. 58 Kindling 2019:IMPACT

Kindling: How to Create a KulturCrew/Cultural Crew in the School Pernille Welent Sørensen (Denmark) – Culture packages, Network & Audience Development, TeaterCentrum

Since 2009 we have had crews of students working with implementing cultural activities in schools. These activities are now taking place in more than 100 schools in Denmark. Based on the experience from the Danish model of “KulturCrew” we will talk about what it takes to make a cultural crew in the US.

We will go through the principles of the crew and the different stages of creating a new crew: What kinds of resources are necessary? What is needed from the teachers? How do we select the students for the program? How is the crew trained? What are the activities of the crew?

In this workshop we will work with some of the methods from the “KulturCrew Education”. It is our plan, in cooperation with IPAY, to create cultural crews in Philadelphia that will be a part of IPAY Showcase in the future.

Kindling: Unpacking “The ‘Black Card’ Project” Dominic Moore-Dunson (USA) – Inlet Dance Theatre

Using his dance theatre production, “The ‘Black Card’ Project,” which explores the African American ideal of the “black card” and the narrow definition of blackness, Inlet Dance Theatre’s Dominic Moore-Dunson (2016 Porter Fellow) will lead a Kindling workshop focusing on using the collaborative creative process to create conversation with minority middle school and high school students about cultural identity as it relates to their future economic capacities.

The workshop uses dance performance, structured improvisation, and feedback as tools to explore the physical meaning of community, leadership, expectations, and the realities of a being a minority in America.

59 Kindling 2019:IMPACT

Kindling Kitchen Tables: On ImPACT IPAY’s Kindling Kitchen Table sessions are part Long Table (developed by Louis Weaver, USA) and partly informed by Open Space thinking. They are an opportunity to engage in open dialogue and hear a range of different perspectives. At least three Kitchen Tables will run concurrently, with different facilitators at each Table. Feel free to move between the tables and find the conversation that most engages you. Have a seat at the table when you have something you’d like to share.

The tables will start with a focus on Impact. How do you use your own power and privilege to provide impactful opportunities? How do you collaborate within your community to maximize potential impact? How can IPAY more effectively impact artistic or market development outside of Showcase? What are your impact questions and what impact stories do you have to share?

Kitchen Table facilitators include: • Wendy Bable (USA) – IPAY Board President • Jennifer Hartmann Luck (USA) – Education & Outreach Director, Paramount Theatre • Mélissa Smith and Danica Rosengren (USA) – 2018 and 2019 Colleen Porter Resident Artists • Mike Payette (Canada) – Artistic Director, Geordie Theatre • 2019 Jim Rye Fellows

62 Jim Rye Fellowship

2018 Rye Fellow Taiwo Afolabi at Showcase 2018 in Philadelphia 2018 Jim Rye Fellows at Showcase 2018 in Philadelphia

The Jim Rye Fellowship offers an outstanding opportunity for graduate students in the fields of TYA directing, management, curating, and education to be involved with the inner workings of a major performing arts for young audiences conference. After a competitive application and review process, Jim Rye fellows are provided with a year-long membership to IPAY as well as registration for the Showcase conference, where they actively participate in the Kindling workshops and panel conversations. Mentors with experience in each student’s area of interest help the scholar navigate the conference and facilitate networking with other professionals in the field. In return, the Fellows provide valuable assistance to conference organizers by serving as reporters or recorders for professional development sessions, as well as performing general administrative tasks. IPAY believes that it is important to support the development of the Rye Fellows as we all work toward building the field of performing arts for young audiences.
