Students achieve Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition Award.

On the weekend of 30 Jun, 31 students embarked on their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Qualifying Expedition on Exmoor. They arrived in school at 07.30 on Saturday 30th June to check their kit. We departed to Exmoor and dropped the students at various car parks in the Minehead area. The students then began day 1 of their expedition in the scorching summer heat. They camped at Pool Bridge Campsite where they had to cook on trangias and put up their tents. The students then rose at 06.30 and departed at 08.00 on day 2 of their route. Day 2 saw thunder storms and heavy rain which added an extra challenge. They navigated their way successfully (on the whole) towards the finish at county gate (Somerset/ border). The teams showed excellent camp craft, navigational ability and team work which resulted in them passing the expedition sec- tion of their award. Please congratulate the following students on their achievements but remind them that the expedition is only a quarter of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and equally as important as the participation in a sport, volunteering and the learning of a new skill.

I cannot really believe that we are at the end of another academic year. It has flown by and so many things have been achieved and so many lives have improved for the better as the students continue to work hard, make good progress and flourish as a result of the many opportunities on offer, here at College. Reading back over the Newsletters this year, I continue to be impressed with the extensive opportunities available to our students and the many benefits that can come from taking part and having a go. From the many House competitions, to Beauty and the Beast, to smashing county records and a 28 year old school record in sporting achievements. From winning writing competitions and A’ Level art work being se- lected for exhibition at the Royal Summer Exhibition – one piece even being selected for the exhibition poster which can be seen all over London! To successful Ten Tors Teams and our first successful year running the Duke of Edinburgh Award. To mention but a few!

We must also not forget to mention all of those students who come to school every day, who work hard, try their best, are helpful, positive and an absolute credit to the college. The students who volunteer to help with our charity work, who help other students in tutor time to improve their literacy or numeracy. The students who take part in Student Voice activities and who have leadership roles – to make the college an even better place. They play such a strong role in making our community the tight, supportive community that it is – and I want to personally thank all of them – for doing the right thing all of the time.

My final thanks must go to the staff and the parents who work tirelessly to support, encourage and challenge the young peo- ple of Bideford College on a lesson by lesson, day by day, hour by hour basis. For the staff at Bideford College, this is more than a job – the staff are committed, hard working and truly care about making every student that attends Bideford College – hap- py, successful and responsible. I look forward to celebrating the many successes in the future and I know that none of these could happen without us all working together for the good of the students.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and restful summer holiday. I hope this fantastic weather con- tinues and that staff, students and parents are able to reflect on all that has been achieved this year and how the coming year will be even better!

See you on the 4th September!

As the Summer term draws to a close, the College held its annual Principal’s Garden Party. In anticipation of the continued good weather a selection of cakes and drinks were provided to cele- brate. Ten students from each House were formally recognised for the continued hard work and dedica- tion to Bideford College.

The Garden Party is a great opportunity for Heads of House and the Leadership team to meet the par- ents and celebrate the success of their children. Throughout the afternoon, the guests were treated to a variety of musical and language performances. It was also an opportunity to invite our elected student leadership teams for each House, so we could formally congratulate them on being elected into their current positions.

Greenpower at the Bike Show.

We had a very successful day at the Bike Show on Bideford Quay on the 26th May. Maybe you came to see us. We sold key- rings and lots of children sat in the car. The main reason we were there was as one of the chosen charities. So we would like to say thank you to Bideford Bike Show organisers and on the night of Vs Belgium, after the heat of sports day, four brave students dressed in uniform to collect a massive cheque. (in size and amount). We would like to say a big THANK YOU to Lisa and her team for the donation totalling £1065.11.

Predannack Airfield Greenpower Racing - 21 June

Bideford College Racing Team kicked off our season in great fashion at Predannack Airfield. The round trip on the coach was roughly 6 hours, but the fun we had there made every minute worth it. We had to leave school at 6.00am to be in time for scrutineering, which we completed at roughly 10.00am. That left us an hour of practice, a great opportunity for some of the newer Year 7s and experienced Year 8s and 9s to try out the car on a practice lap. Through practice we had a fairly clean run until practice ended at 11.00am. After that, we practised pit-stops and had some of our lunch. As it soon transpired, we were late to the grid, so we started further down than we should have. We managed to complete 20 laps until it gave up the ghost with 10 minutes to go and Zach Rucki on board.

Pit-stops were a little slower than preferable in the first race so we were hard at work during the 30 minute gap, which proved to be effective, as our first driver swap was about 2 minutes faster! We were off to a blinder with Harvey at the start, putting in a healthy stint of super-fast lap times. We carried on very well with an- other fast pit-stop at 60 minutes in. But without warning, our car’s batteries died again, this time even earlier than the last, and despite the best efforts of the team, we were unable to carry on. Still, with the amount of distance we racked up during both races we came second, a great effort from everyone. We hope to go one better at the next race in Castle Combe.

On Friday 29 June the sun shone on our 2018 leavers as they attended their Year 11 Prom at the Barnstaple Hotel. To have watched these students grow from little Year 7s to the wonderful young men and women they have become has been a privilege. They have represented the College wonderfully and we wish them all the very best for the future.

Good Luck year 11!

www.facebook.com/bidefordcollege www.bidefordcollege.org 8 Arthur House News

If Arthur do not win the House Cup this term I am debating purchasing a Gareth Southgate style waistcoat in order to help inspire the students of Arthur House. We competed well in this year’s Sports Day and the weather was fantastic and despite speculation, it created a perfect day for our students from all houses to show case their athletic ability. Arthur worked incredibly hard throughout the day and it was only a small margin from first to fifth place and our ethos is to make sure all stu- dents have an opportunity to participate than just trying to win the cup and in my opinion that is the most im- portant thing. We have welcomed the new cohort of year 6 Arthur students up to the College for transition days before their start in September and I was pleased to see our house leaders and a selection of year 7 students helping on the day. The students were superb and were so mature and responsible that the younger students couldn’t be any- thing other than impressed and inspired by them. Obviously the best holiday is on the horizon and my advice would be to make a list of things you would like to achieve over the break. I can distinctly remember watching the days go by and some frustration near the end of the holiday when the realisation had set in that I had clocked up five hundred hours on Football Manager and hadn’t really left the house. Have a good Summer. Mr Skinner—Head of Arthur House

Welcome to my first Arthur House newsletter. Written by the one and only Jake Holding. I am looking forward to keeping you up to date with all the relevant news and information relating to Arthur over the next year. In recent news Arthur House took part in Sports Day, although we came fifth it was a day enjoyed by all and only a small number of points separated the winning house from the fifth placed house. Hopefully the new in- take of year 6 students will boost our chances next year. However, this year has seen a whole host of high achievers in school, especially a couple of year 7 students who have been racking up the House points and hitting all their targets; Fin Waldron for earning 103 house points Rosalie Fowler for earning 125 house points

Arthur has competed well in getting House points, competing in the competitions, and good overall attendance and this has led to a very good look for Arthur House and hopefully the House Cup is coming home! Thanks for reading my first instalment for this newsletter and have fun in the holidays everyone. Jake Holding - Arthur House Journalist

www.facebook.com/bidefordcollege www.bidefordcollege.org 9 Brunel House News

With the hot weather and World Cup excitement, this has been a term to remember. The highlight in Brunel House was Sports Day where our students excelled themselves, both on the track and in the supporter’s area; we were unlucky not to bring the trophy home. The main issue seems to have been an ill-timed “House run” which left some of our best athletes unable to compete in the main events and we are considering an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. It was a delight to see all the students trying to amass House points in the races and in the competitions and we must make a special mention to Megan Hare who earned £50 towards Edukid running a tuck shop with the other Charity Leaders. We have now elected all our new leaders and the timetable roll has been a great success so all our students are now set up and ready to come back in September and hit the ground running. On their return, we will need to elect a new House Council and there will be lots of other opportunities for students to get involved in Brunel so please encourage your child to think over the holidays about how they are going to contribute next academic year. It is with heavy hearts that we let you know that we are both stepping down as Co-Heads of Brunel House. Mrs Bourke is returning to the classroom and I am leaving for pastures new. In our place will be Mrs Luke who will do an excellent job running the House and taking care of the students pastoral needs. Please offer her your support and encouragement as she tackles this big task, but we know she will be a great success in the role. So we’ll sign off by thanking all our students, all our tutors and all the parents that we’ve had contact with this year and wish everyone a happy and restful holiday. Mr Nias & Mrs Bourke – Heads of Brunel House

Hello, I’m Caleb White and I have been elected as the new Brunel Journalist. I would like to say a big thank you as I am very proud to have taken this role in Brunel. I am here to bring you the latest updates on Brunel and other information for your benefit. I will always make sure you receive the most recent updates as I have taken this role very seriously.

Brunel have done great this year by gaining many house points, working hard in school and trying their hardest in the final days of the year in their new timetable. Every Brunel student has done great this year but I would like to point out the Top 5 Brunel achievers. I would like to congratulate Gemma Cleave who has gained a total of 121 house points this year. Next I would like to congratulate Alice Allebone-Parish who has gained a total of 123 house points. Next I would like to congratulate Lacey Bayliss who has gained a total of 126 house points. Finally, before I announce the top achiever, I would like to congratulate Molly Childs who has gained a total of 131 house points. The top achiever, this year, in Brunel is… Jake Cleave who has gained an outstanding 195 house points. I would like to say well done to them and well done to all of Brunel who have gained many house points to con- tribute to the house and will come back fighting harder next year in everything. Now the summer holidays have arrived I hope you all have a great summer and feel refreshed ready to come back in September ready to work harder than before with a fresh start. Make sure you keep safe this summer so you can come back well and ready to learn and to keep your attendance up all year and gain many more house points for Brunel for the House Cup at Christmas. www.facebook.com/bidefordcollege www.bidefordcollege.org 10 Coleridge House News

The summer term is coming to an end already and my first year at Bideford College is almost over. I just want to thank everyone that has helped and supported me during this period as I am now feeling settled and very much part of a very good House and PE team. I have really seen the House system evolve this year and can see some real progress with regards to how we are supporting and encouraging students with all aspects of College regardless of which House they are in. Conse- quently, I am looking forward to greeting my first set of Year 11s on August 23rd, when they collect their well- deserved set of results and fingers crossed they even improve on last year’s (the best the College had seen for years). A change in the canteen layout, based on student voice, an improved House point system, a rowing event that in- spired over 100 participants from the College, a successful Sports Presentation evening and the Principal’s garden party to name a few, are the real highlights of this successful year. I whole heartedly believe that the staff and stu- dents at the College are working extremely hard and providing a much improved learning experience for all and it is now a chance to rejuvenate ready for September’s new intake of Year 6s and an even better 2018-19. “You get built up and put on a pedestal and then people want to bring you down” – not quite the greatest philoso- phy quote but so true! This is how it always feel when you win the House cup and everyone wants the underdog to win the following term. To win the cup two consecutive terms would be amazing and this is the one that everyone wants to win as the ribbons stay on there for the longest period of time – fingers crossed and not a repeat of Sports day when we finished second by 4 points. However, I always emphasise that 1st or 5th there has been some success in that House and I would like to remind all in Coleridge House that you are making us all proud if you are truly doing your best – that’s all I ask. Have a great summer and thank you again.

Mr O’Donoghue - Head of Coleridge House

Hello, my name is Wilbur Mason, and I am Coleridge’s House Journalist. I’m writing to tell you all about the amazing events and achievements over the last few months. On the 28th of June we had the joy of Sports Day: fast runners, high jumpers and long lines to the tuck shop, where they raised around £500 for our collective school charities. Unfortunately, Farwell took the Langford Cup, followed shortly (4 points!) by Coleridge. Recently, on the 10th Ju- ly, some successful students were invited to celebrate their achievements – whilst still being able to enjoy lovely singing and a slice of cake – kindly served by student helpers. Performances from the Bidebelles, and many amazing other students, noticeably Coleridge’s own Zoe Chope. It’s the time of year when all assessments are finishing, Year 7s become Year 8s – and so on. Every Year 9 has begun their GCSE courses, exciting for some, terrifying for many, with varied new opportunities for the students. Speaking of which, some brave Year 9s successfully completed their bronze Duke of Edinburgh award, facing far distances of Dartmoor, community services and learning new skills, such as; leading, new sports and orienteer- ing. It’s a fresh start for everyone, to achieve their potential and to be the best you can be. Soon new Year 6s will be joining the school – moving into the tutors of Miss. Smith, and Mr. Maughan. Farwell House News

So we did it! Farwell won the Langford sports day cup for the second year in a row! Well done to all of you. It was a magnificent site, seeing students pushing themselves to achieve their very best and students cheering each oth- er on leading Farwell to victory! As always, there was a fantastic atmosphere and the students pushed on despite soaring temperatures to clinch the cup by just 9 points from second place Coleridge.

Well done to all of the students who took part in the house run – a new introduction for this year. Also a big thank you to our competition leaders for organising and running the house competitions on the day. Another big thank you also to the charity leaders for organising and running the sports day tuck shop – raising an impressive £250 towards their chosen charities. I know that students are eager to find out who has won the House cup. I do feel they have worked hard in the final term to try and win it back. Everyone should be very proud of the work that they have done and the progress made throughout this year. It would be an amazing achievement if Farwell could be the holders of both cups again! Elsewhere in the Farwell news, you will see details of our new student leaders. These guys are highly enthusiastic and will be working with fellow Farwell students to ensure or continued success next year. On 12th and 13th July we said hello to our Year 6 students who will be starting here in Year 7 in September. Day one was an opportunity to make new friends and see who would be in the new tutor groups. Team building and games in Morton Park. Day two had more of an academic focus where students sampled three short lessons from various parts of the curriculum. Students and staff had a great time and we look forward to seeing everyone again in Sep- tember. Thank you also to Olivia and Caleb, our house captains for doing such a great job in helping out and mak- ing the new students feel so welcome. Finally, enjoy the well-deserved summer holidays. Don’t forget to put the sun cream on! Please write Tuesday 4th September on your calendars when we will see students back at school – eager and full of enthusiasm!

Mr Gibbins - Head of Farwell House

Hi I’m Rhys Wassall and I am the new House Journalist for Farwell House. What made me choose this role instead of the others is that I am keen on hearing what other people in the school have to say as well as writing and typing up stories and articles. This year has been quite exciting with Coleridge winning their first house cup. Mr O’Donoghue seemed extremely proud of his House for winning this award. Sports day went tremendously well with each student and teacher cheering each other on for each event. It was a spectacle to see all of the pupils giving tremendous support to- wards their peers, every student had an amazing time by entering each event as well as being with their friends and buying ice cream on that sunny, hot day. This year’s Sports Day introduced a new House run to the school which went well as it included every student who didn’t get a chance to do any of the other events. The scores for the Langford cup came in close as in 5th place was Arthur with 864 points, Brunel in 4th with 880 points, Hepworth in 3rd with 888 points, Coleridge in 2nd with 896 points and Farwell came 1st by only 4 points ahead with a total score of 900 points. News

It is amazing to see the students all step up to be a year older as they move into their next year group. I am particularly happy with the way Hepworth have made progress this year with our students being above the college average for achievement. They always look immaculate and on Sports Day the sea of Hepworth blue was a clear sign of how unified as a team they are. The day itself was generally a success for us with Year7 being particularly outstanding. We were missing a couple of our older star athletes and that might have been the difference for our ranking. However, for event winners we issued House colours and they were awarded to: Tom Stone, Charlie Pilkington, Antony Lavis, Evie Wood, Libby Stevens, Josh Nixon, Sophie Lambden, Charlie Mugford, Ben Pomeroy, Matt Lewis, Billy Heard, Katie Rowe, Jack Johns and Ben Davis. A special mention must go to Paige Simmonds and Chloe Shaxton who stepped up to the plate to represent the House in tough events. I was really proud to see them compete and am grateful for their points that they added to our score. Im- pressive. The Year 6 students had a great couple of days of Induction (thanks to Mrs Barnes and the House Leaders for sorting the first day) and it looked like we have a strong incoming cohort, with only a few looking like they need to fall into line – I am sure the rest of the House will give them guidance on the standards we expect!

Mr Cope – Head of Hepworth House

Hello my name is Mayson Gosling, Hepworth's new journalist I am very proud to say that I am part of the House Leadership Team and also proud to say that I will be doing my absolute best to keep everyone informed on all of Hepworth's news, also I will do my best at making great changes alongside the rest of the House Leadership Team to make the House the best it can be. When I was elected I wanted to bring Hepworth something new and interesting, hoping to bring some more exciting news forward in the academic year. In terms of recent events, Sports Day was very successful for us as a House, not only did we win many medals, we were keen to get stuck in to every event. Although we didn’t win, we should be proud of our resilience and responsibility to get involved and we tried our best, we should all be proud of that and how far we have come through the support of each other. As this term draws to a close we are all given a new opportunity to reflect and think upon changes we can make when we arrive back at school after the Summer, but it's also an opportunity to notice some of our high achiev- ers. I have picked two of our highest achievers within the house and have decided to take the opportunity to dedicate part of the newsletter to their outstanding performances within the college, from KS3 we have chosen Poppy Munro and from KS4 we have chosen Leo Gooding for their fantastic work ethic and their determination to have the most outstanding work, by going above and beyond to be the best, we dedicate this part of the newsletter to their achievements within the House, congratulations. I hope that everyone has a fantastic summer and I look forward to getting stuck in with all House events in the future, see you all in September!

Rounders

To help the Sixth Form unwind as we near the end of the school year, the Year 12s played a rounders tournament in our IAG session. Splitting our year into Houses, each one played four games. There was an essence of light com- petition but mainly it was a fun hour and a great opportunity for our year to spend some time together, uniting over a game of rounders.

A week later, we had our Sixth Form BBQ, although the weather wasn’t at its best, it was a lovely way to end our first year.

Summer Ball

It was a brilliant success! Held at Hallsannery House in Bideford, the Summer Ball is the chance for the Sixth Form leavers to have a final goodbye before their next step into the future. After initial meets and greets, complimen- tary wine and professional photographs we were treated to a delicious two course meal and left to dance and socialise throughout the rest of the night. Festivities were only halted once by an impromptu power cut, which was quickly resolved! It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening to spend catching up with friends, saying farewells and seeing some of our much loved teachers outside of the classroom and on the dance floor!

The Year 10 GCSE HISTORY Fieldwork July 2018 to the WW1 Battlefields of France and Belgium.

This July the Humanities faculty took 31 Year 10 students to the WW1 Battlefields of France and Belgium. There are many ob- vious reasons why this area is essential for anyone to visit at least once in their life even more so during this centenary period. However, the main aim was to support our Year 10 in the historic environment: The Western Front 1914-18: injuries treat- ment and the trenches. GCSE module.

One of the most emotive parts of the visit is to The Devonshire Regiment Cemetery from the first day of The Battle of the Somme July 1st 1916. The motto in the cemetery sums up the huge human cost ‘The Devonshires held this trench, they hold it still’ It is easy to be- come desensitised when faced with so many grave stones,

So it is important to always remember the human cost of war, and vital to identify that gravestone with an individual human being. Students were given research tasks to illus- trate this; find the oldest soldier to die, find the youngest soldier to die. find the soldier who came from the closest vicinity to Bideford College. < Leon Dagge lays a poppy at the grave of: Private GRIFFITHS, F G

Service Number 20657. Died 01/07/1916 9th Bn. Devonshire Regiment. Son of Mr. D. H. Griffiths, of Fair View, Irsha St., Appledore, Devon.

Private Griffiths was the soldier who, from our research, came from the closet proximity to Bideford College. Students and staff pay their respects with a minute’s silence.

Students had the opportunity to visit many sites during the trip including; the preserved trenches at the Newfoundland Me- morial Park and the ‘In Flanders Fields Museum’ as well as the Essex Farm Advanced Dressing Station where John McCrae wrote ‘In Flanders Fields’ arguably the most famous of all the WW1 poems. The trip however was not all, work as the trip to the Belgium Chocolate shop and the huge purchases there will testify!

All in all in was an excellent trip, one cannot fail to be moved and enthralled by the very nature of the experience around the Battles of WW1, excellent weather and chocolate certainly but most importantly the excellent attitude and work ethic of the students made it a real pleasure.

Bideford College students worked collaboratively with students from across the Academy trust to deliver an out- standing performance of the RSCs Macbeth at the Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre: fourteen students from Yrs 7 & 10 performed to a packed audience at Dingles fairground centre on June 29th. The promenade performance saw students participate from across the multi academy trust, ranging from 6 years old to 17 years of age. Our actors were magnificent and displayed exceptional talent which was commented on by the theatrical director. Our students were a credit to Bideford College and displayed talent, professionalism and team spirit. They be- haved as though they were a true company. Afterwards, performers and audience alike took part in the fairground attractions for an evening of fun. Our thanks must be expressed to our parents who supported and ensured students were collected from the ven- ue. Mrs James - Head of English Faculty

Carnegie Book Group Wow at West Buckland!

On Tuesday 12 June 18 students spent the day at as part of the Carnegie Book Awards’ re- gional annual schools event.

Since March, the students have been meeting every Tuesday lunchtime to discuss the books that have been shortlisted this year and to then prepare a presentation on an allocated book from that shortlist. This is then per- formed in front of all the other secondary schools in the area – there were around 150 in the audience.

The book we had was... The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas; it is a powerful and hard-hitting story of a young black girl who witnesses her friend being gunned down by the police and the unfolding consequences and aftermath of this. It was heavily influenced by the Black Lives Matter movement and is a relevant narrative for all of to read and understand.

We are so proud of how they have all worked together as a team – with students from Year 8 to 10 supporting one another and working collaboratively.

Their Fresh Prince of Bel Air rap to open the presentation was something to behold! Brilliant! The team came third overall out of West Buckland, Shebbear, Torrington, South Molton, Ilfracombe, Braunton, Pilton and Park schools.

As part of the event the students met, and were able to question writer Mitch Johnson, author of Kick. Sadly we say goodbye to the Year 10s from the Carnegie group as next year they will be neck deep in exams and unable to take part! A huge well done to the following students:

Accelerated Reader End of Year Celebration

We celebrated our KS3 students’ reading successes with a lunchtime tea party in the Library at the end of term.

Students were invited to come and eat cake and cheer on their peers as they re- ceived certificates and prizes for the outstanding work they had done this year.

This annual celebration is a wonderful opportunity to applaud and recognise those students that have gone above and beyond expectation and embraced their time in the library.

Well done to all!

Kai Connolly - Reading Superstar!

This year Kai Connolly has utterly excelled in Accelerated Reader; he has set himself challenging targets all of which he has completely smashed – he now holds the College record for number of words read - 10 million and counting! He has read 111 books and passed 111 quizzes (most of them at 100%) and on top of this he has taken and completed the Library’s Challenge Read programme. His dedication and commitment has seen him finish the school year by in- creasing his reading age to 16:06 months ( the reading programmes maximum reading age) attending the Carnegie Book Group every week, and working hard on his personal creative writing project. Well done Kai, I cannot wait to see what you achieve in year 10.

On 21st June, 19 A level Biology students and 13 BTEC Applied science students ventured across Braunton Bur- rows, carrying out a sequence of data gathering experiments which allowed them to investigate the effects of grazing and tramping on the biodiversity of plant species across the dune system. The students used a range of measuring techniques which allowed them to apply their theoretical knowledge of biology to a real world situation ‘in the field’. This experience meant that students could not only gather their own data for analysis but also understand first-hand how the succession of dunes develops inland away from the shore. Braunton burrows is part of the North Devon’s ‘Man and the Biosphere’ reserve, the first such area to be classi- fied by UNESCO in the UK. It is the second largest dune system in the UK and the burrows are home to early 500 species of wildflower (see image below), helping to make Braunton the most biodiverse parish in England. The applied nature of our sixth science courses is aiming to engage students with the natural world around them and foster an engrained passion to study and preserved the environment so that it may be enjoyed by future generations.

The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition Online is a showcase of the UK’s finest young artistic talent. This year, over 1,400 aspiring artists attending Sixth Form colleges or schools submitted their work to the A-level Summer Exhibition Online 2018 to be judged by an expert panel: Royal Academician Mali Morris, curator Desirée de Chair, and RA Schools student Hamish Pearch.

Having work chosen to appear in the A-level Summer Exhibition Online is a great achievement for young artists; many will go on to develop their talents at art school and in their careers.

Students from all over the UK enter their works and the exhibition showcases a rich variety of styles and media: from drawing and video to sculpture and prints, painting and photography. Two of Bideford College's best students have been selected to appear in the A level online summer exhibition. Only 43 students were selected this year.

Alice Guymer, who was also shortlisted last year, and Fergal Nesbit, whose work features as the exhi- bition header.

We are extremely proud of their achievements and anticipate a bright future ahead, as artists and designers, as both are planning to study Art at degree level. https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibi…/a-level-online-2018…

At the county athletics championships on 11 June Flynn Jennings won the 3000m, Adam Leworthy took 2nd in the 1500 and Isobelle Beer was 3rd in the 200m final and 5th in the 100m final. Adam and Flynn will now rep- resent Devon at the South West championships where if they do well enough, they can get selected to go to the national championships. Flynn broke a 28 year old school record running 9.15 Adam broke a 29 year old school record running 4.31

Flynn Jennings has broken another record on 19 June, this time, he has improved his own 3000m record by 10 seconds to 9.05.9 and he did this at Exeter Arena in the South West Championships, competing for Devon schools. He has been selected after this performance to represent Devon in the National Finals (usually on a TV channel). Adam Leworthy also competed for Devon but his race was much more closely competed and very tactical. Adam still managed 5th in the South West which is also an amazing achievement. Well done to both.

This year, sports day had no chance of being rained off! In glorious sunshine, the House teams competed for the Sports Day trophy (The Langford Cup) for the second year. Year 7,8,9 and 10 boys and girls competed in athletics events throughout the day, finishing with the excitement of the House relays and the staff relay. Medals were awarded for gold, silver and bronze positions and points were gained for all performances in- cluding the new “House Run” where all of the students and staff from a House tried to complete one or more laps of the field in 3 and a half minutes. It was a spectacle to see all of the pupils in their house coloured t-shirts and there was tremendous support for their peers and a real sense of team spirit.

See the final results below. It was amazingly close!!!

www.facebook.com/bidefordcollege www.bidefordcollege.org 30 Personal Hygiene

Over the recent weeks, during the warmer weather some issues surrounding the personal hygiene of some of our students have come to light. Students are of the age that sweat glands are fully formed and functioning and unless there is daily washing and application of deodorant then there is the risk of body odour, which is unpleasant for everyone. Students are not permitted to bring in aerosols due to the large number of students with asthma but can bring in pump action sprays and roll on deodorants. In any case a good antiperspirant applied to clean armpits at the start of the day should be effective enough until 3pm. We purposefully chose blazers which would dry overnight if a wash was required midweek. We recommend blazers are washed weekly. Here’s to a long, hot summer and if this continues into September please ensure that your children are adopting effective personal hygiene routines at the start of the day.
