XXL: BEARPRIDE 2014 24/05/14 WORDS BY Pulse, 1 Invicta Plaza, TOM REDKID Southwark, SE1 9UF PHOTOS BY MARK STOREY

WHAT A BEARTASTIC time to be alive! Bear-ded tranny wins Eurovision, Prince Charles gets Bearish with a Russian bully bear and an NFL footbear comes out at the start of his career instead of at the end. And it’s only May! To celebrate these milestones, Big Bear Mark Ames threw the whole damn pot o’ honey into the woods and let the herd loose in a Saturday night tug- n-hug in aid of MildMay HIV charity. Otters, cubs, wolves, silverbacks and a few Bigfoots let their (back) hair down and shook that bowl full o’ jelly 'til it turned into jam. DJs Mr. Ames, Christian M., Stuart Styles, Joe Egg, Andy Almighty and Cathill seared their brand onto grade ‘A’ beef packing every steer in the pen onto 3 dance floors in a 12-hour party! Q-Cleaners owner and philanthropist Carlos Feitoza and fashion photographer bf Dan had “the time of their lives”, especially Dan at his first-time among the wolfpack. Leather, denim and fur expert, designer Jean-Paul Gautier and friend popped in from his current Barbican exhibition to pick up some fashion tips for the plus-sized male. “Flannel? Merci, non!” Our li’l Goldilocks ate from every bowl of porridge, each one just right. When our tummies were full we chillaxed on the super-sized sofas in the ambient day-glo of grandma’s house. “My Granny, what a big bulge you have!” Feeling peckish, we ventured into the gingerbread house in the woods and nibbled on some toasty gingerbread men, warm and moist from the oven, yum! (I found a couple hairs in mine but who’s complaining!) Bearpride! Fashionistas! XXL has outdone itself!

THIS YEAR’S EUROVISION winner has quickly come to represent so much more than just her native Austria in the continent’s most unapologetically gauche talent show since globally televised talent shows began. Conchita Wurst’s win is thought to both embody and champion liberal thinking and acceptance in a 21st century Europe over more regressive sentiments taking stronghold of late behind the old ‘Iron Curtains’. So, it was natural that London’s LGBT crowd were out in no small measure to celebrate the coming of ‘The Bearded Lady’ to superclub Heaven’s main floor last Saturday. Like a pheonix, Ms. Wurst rose from the wings in a cutaway black gown and canary heels to the roar of the boys and girls cramming the big room. From ‘Rise Like A Pheonix’, her winning number, to ‘My Heart Will Go On’ - Conchita climaxed the night with soaring ballads and Mariah-esque arm gestures to boot. Naturally, Ms. Wurst was hardly the shy and retiring type, and any admirers wanting a picture and a chat after her star turn could find her in the VIP room - more than ready to mingle. So it was, this year, a true vision indeed for Europe!

SEPM 25/05/14 East Bloc, 217 City Road, WORDS BY Shoreditch, EC1V 1JN TOM REDKID PHOTOS BY MARK STOREY

THE BEST REVOLUTIONS begin underground and East Bloc’s SEPM cranked up the juice and zapped a shockwave that rippled through Old Street to jump start the Bank holiday weekend. Basso & Brooke went b2b with Lucious Flajore creating a dreamy garden for the kiddies to romp. “I only play when the mood is right. When I feel it then the crowd feels it. I do it for the love!” Humpy graphic designer Ricky G was on hand to support the lovely Lucious and Basso & Brooke. In the back room Sink the Pink’s Daisy Confused entertained with her tripped-out butts to nuts tunes for a date rape. Scott Whippy did what his moniker implies and whipped us into a Friday-night frenzy. Attack Attack Attack put a cherry on top of his usual ample servings of heaping helpings of electro-bass flavoured dance trance with Dylan Walsh premiering AAA’s new summer release 'Lose Yourself', and oh how we did. Larry Tee and Gallack found us right where we lost ourselves and kept us warm and fuzzy. Speaking of fuzzy, that rare bird, FiFi LaTrue “beautified an ostrich” before she swanned in fresh from her world tour. Jimmy B, a fresh daisy came straight from work and “didn’t even bother to change clothes.” I’m sure McDonald’s won’t mind as long as you wash the uniform by Tuesday. In the back-back room a private bday party for a very lucky bday boy Jack Howell “cuz I need a new leather jock strap and lycra spandex” had all the booty-ful people bumping booty 'til dawn.

MANBAR 24/05/14 79 Charing Cross Road, Soho, WC2H 0NE WORDS AND PHOTOS BY CHRIS JEPSON

AFTER A COSTLY court case fighting a tiresome neighbour, last week Manbar were given their entertainment license back just in time for the Spring bank holiday, and celebrated with a whole raft of ‘Turn Me Up’ parties. We trotted down on Saturday for ‘Hombre’ the official pre-party for Absolutely Juicy with fond memories of the Andrew Harris original Juicy parties ‘back in the day’ wafting around in our grey cell depleted crania. The delightful DJ Gretta was on hand with a whole box of commercial and the latest house tunes interspersed with her stepping out from behind the decks for some camp performance. Manbar is a welcoming haven for an eclectic mix of hirsute hotties starting a big night out, twinks having a pre-Conchita cocktail and those just out for a pint and a chinwag with mates, and we are delighted to have it back on our rosta of late night hangouts.

BEARTACULAR 23/05/14 The RVT 372 Kennington Lane, WORDS AND PHOTOS BY Vauxhall, SE11 5HY CHRIS JEPSON

LONDON GREW some fur and went grrrr last week as Bearfest events popped up all over the place. Def one of our faves was the full-on, 5-star (not the 80s pop group) theatrical extravaganza that was Beartacular at the RVT. Hosted by the über fabulous ‘What do you think you’re looking at faggot?’ Jonny Woo, a plethora of paws-in-the-air performers paraded across the hallowed boards for a capacity crowd. ‘Dave the Bear’, clearly the Miley Cyrus of the bear scene, gave us his best twerking carwash strip complete with soap suds dripping off his hot little basket. The Dream Bears twirled and sashayed to Lady Marmalade and Nigel Murfit crooned a bit of Take That and Lion King before the little pocket rocked Edgar Trujillo turned up the heat with his fiery escapades that raised a bit of a sweat on all of us. And just to show bears have hearts, too, 12 of them bared all in their underwear for a charity auction in aid of Ben Cohen’s anti- bullying StandUp Foundation. An aptly named Beartacular indeed.

FAIRY BEARY+ MACHO SLUTS WORDS BY 26/05/14 TOM REDKID East Bloc, 217 City Road, PHOTOS BY Shoreditch, EC1V 1JN MARK STOREY

WE DESCENDED upon Shoreditch’s hallowed basement of laser lights and burning beats for a different sort of night to the norm – Fairy Beary! As part of Bearfest 2014, it pulled some of the sexiest and most muscled hairy guys in the city into the ‘Bloc to growl and grr and huh-huh-honey! We were in our dreamland baby, and we woke up with a Macho Slut at EastBloc, around six to be exact: Per QX, Done & Dusted (Alan X/Lewis Lenin). Andrew Moore, Ray Noir and Ursula Snakes all joined forces to give the Bank Hols one last kick in da rump to close out the weekend with a banger! Hardest working manager in town Wayne, takin-none- o’-yo-shit Diego, and the whole crew kept not only Monday morn Macho Sluts but the entire weekend trippin tidy for every kid on the block. Main Room dynamic duo Done & Dusted swirled some deep, “happy filthy spacey grooves” as biggie Alan X tagged it. Then Per QX, doin' double duty from Guttersluts, grabbed the wheel and swerved that car right off the road into the abyss and had us freefallin' weightless for all eternity. Other ‘sluts from the Gutter’ hobbled in on their broken heels and bruised knees to add some class with a capital ‘K’ to the day. Bernie and Charlie dragged their post- nuclear Metropolis meltdown to the EB cellar to have one last blow-out with the few remaining survivors before starvation and cannibalism set in. Salome, aka Ms. Charlie, danced her shorts down to her ankles and didn't even know it til she did a catwalk spin and her brows and balls hit the floor so fast I

26 thought the Pope had just walked in! Huddled in the back room Andrew Moore filled us with hopeful funk-bop and Ursula Snakes kept our weary spirits alive with her own brand of hyper-happy ceiling-shakers. But, of course, who else would you expect to find at the apocolypse feasting on the dead and not-yet-dead? DJ Ray Noir! Like black smoke, his dark rock tattooed cock turned a ship o’ fools into a groove tomb making the end of the world seem pretty damn cool. We opened the hatch Mon aftenoon, clambered out, zombies re-born--- and hungry!

27 MATINÉE 25/05/14 Ministry of Sound, 103 Gaunt Street, SE1 6DP WORDS AND PHOTOS BY CHRIS JEPSON

THE THING WE love about continental clubbing is that most of them have a terrace that enables you to top up your tan whist dancing with a hottie in shorts. Sadly here in London those opportunities are few and far between as most of our venues are not set up that way and our weather is a little too unpredictable to plan an al fresco shindig. On Sunday though the gods smiled down on the gays and sent warming rays to light up the Matinee Terrace Party at the Ministry of Sound giving an Ibiza feel that had the boys shucking their shirts quicker than you could say DSquared sale. Superstar DJ Ivan Gomez joined Tony English, Michel Mizrahi and Fabio Luigi outside, while the pale skinned Lee Harris stayed indoors with Gonzalo and Mike Dower on the Society decks, and while the inside dance floor was packed, it was clearly all about the terrace which was rammed to capacity with hot flesh as scantily clad dancers cavorted on a purpose built stage and cooling CO2 cannons blasted across the crowd. The London season is officially OPEN.

HORSE MEAT DISCO 25/05/14 The Eagle, 349 WORDS BY Kennington Lane, TOM REDKID Vauxhall, SE11 5QY PHOTOS BY JOEL RYDER

HORSE MEAT DISCO on a bank holiday, can there be any sweeter combo? If there is I don’t wanna know! All the gang came to play and more than a few newbies and some devilsh hotties packed out “Studio 54 on Kennington Lane” in what has to be the friendliest, liveliest club this side of Manhattan and Ibiza all rolled into one big hug. All this is down to manager Simon and owner Mark who never stop working all night on the scene. When most such men are nowhere to be found these guys are in the mix shaking hands pullin' pints keepin things happy 'n' hoppin'. “You gotta love what ya do!” Mark quips as he jets from front door to back garden all smiles. Keeping us smiling on the dance floor were res Horsey wrangler DJs Severino, Stanton and special guest Tasty Tim: “In a word -‘Fab’ (well, half a word is better than none.) Stanton has me on once every decade so maybe I’ll be back in 2024.” Jerry Miskolinko, first-time Horsey, long-time hottie, came all the way from Slovenia just for HMD! “I knew about it for long time and finally came here!” And did it live up to expectations? He threw down some sexy shirtless shapes 'neath the disco ball and exclaimed, “BEST music, BEST pub, BEST ever! I was born in the wrong decade!” Nope Jer, you were born at exactly the right time--now! Big brothers Ian, Ben and their kin chose HMD for their family. “We all live in London. Makes perfect sense to have it here.” FWBs Dennis, Karl and Ben added some muscle- soaked dance moves to liven up the queue at the bar. Gatekeeper Omar summed it all up nicely: “we’re all disco dancers and rhthym makers.”

We start this week by sending congratulations and best wishes to 2012 Drag Idol winner La Voix[LSLEWQEHIMXXLVSYKLXSXLIPMZIWIQM½REPW of Britain’s Got Talent. You can watch her perform for a place in this year’s Grand Final on Saturday (31st) from 7pm on ITV1. Knock ‘em dead, love!

Back in Drag Idol land, last week at the Admiral Duncan’s third heat, RuPaul’s judge made a surprise appearance, cheering on the judges and acts. It was The Bear Did Lady who won the heat with a rousing and commanding set.

On Thursday The Two Brewers, who have won the competition three times, chose Doctor Woof as their Heat Final winner. He describes his act as “Diana Dors meets Sally Bowles, in the middle of a farmyard on a spaceship”. The Doctor decided to enter this year after being encouraged to do so by fellow Idol competitor The Bear Did Lady.

Here are the rest of last week’s winners...

Hi Dr Alex, I have a boyfriend but we have an open relationship and play with other guys when either one of us is away. My boyfriend was away last week and I had a big weekend. I had sex with a few guys at a party. One guy came home with me and we had sex again, but this time unprotected. I know why it happened – we were both still a bit high and I guess there was a click between us. I am usually always really careful about using condoms. Anyways, a few days later I saw the guy again and this time he told me that he was positive but on meds and not detectable. We had a bust up about it. He says that he is safer to be with than me because he knows he is positive and his meds are working, whereas he says I could have HIV and just not know it. It was way too late for PEP, and so I have to just sit and wait to test. My boyfriend is being amazing….I told him that a condom broke. But should I be worried or do you think I will be ok? I feel really down about the whole thing. Thanks, Andy
